Ask a Rams fan

What's up, Pack fans.  I write over at Turf Show Times, SBN's site for the Rams.  I just wanted to stop by and see if you had any lingering questions to ask a Rams fan before Sunday's game.

I know Mitchell isn't too worried about the roster, but I would warn you guys, the Rams are a rapidly improving team.  If you think you're playing the 2008 Rams, you're wrong.  What are you concerned about, if anything?  What matchups are you most interested by?

Hit me up.  I'll check in throughout the next couple of days until we kickoff in the Lou.

I know you guys have been derided in the sports media for the number of points you’ve scored against middle of the pack teams (SEA and WAS). What do you think the biggest offensive obstacle has been?

Reps with the WRs

Bulger was hurt most of the preseason with a fractured pinky, so he didn’t get a chance to work with Laurent Robinson, who had a great preseason and is off to a great start through two games. Donnie Avery was also hurt with a foot injury, and though the two played well at times together last year, they certainly could have used more reps with a new head coach and offensive coordinator. The lack of production in the passing game has stifled drives by failing to keep linebackers honest and to connect on 3rd and medium or long.

How has Chris Long looked this year?

Does he have a chance to not be a bust?

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Not great

but decent our last contest in Washington. I think people who don’t watch the Rams (which is damn near every football fan) assumed that since he was the #2 pick, he would explode like Mario Williams or any other top-tier DE. He’s just not that kind of DE. I see him developing into Patrick Kerney 2.0, which would be fine by any Rams fan.
So does he have a chance not to be a bust? Of course. He’s definitely someone we’ll be watching closely at TST given how often Rodgers has been sacked this year.

Like Patrick Kerney's not a speed rusher?

Patrick Kerney was only one of the best ends in football in 2007 and that year I easily would’ve put him into the same category Mario is in right now.

They're very different prototypes

I’m not comparing production. I’m comparing styles

Positive

Thus far, the biggest impact has been changing the mindset. We saw it last year. When Linehan got the boot and Haslett took over, the Rams finally showed some effort and beat Washington on the road (who was the hottest team in the NFL at the time) and then trounced Dallas at home. The honeymoon quickly wore off, however, as Haslett stepped into Linehan’s role instead of being given a chance to mold the team in his image.
Since then, we’ve changed owners, our general manager, and the entire coaching staff. It’s been an entire overhaul in the course of one offseason. That being the case, this staff is still getting its feet wet and trying to establish an identity on the sidelines. I like what I’m seeing given the limited talent in spots, but there’s still much to go.
What I’ve really liked from Spagnuolo is his ability to go from hard ass to compassionate mentor. When he came out with a brutal early training camp, many of us thought we had Bill Parcells/Eric Mangini 2.0. But his approach with Richie Incognito after week 1 and Donnie Avery after last week showed he can do more than bark. He’s brought an appropriate mixture of hate & hugs that is paying off so far, but it’s 2 games into the first year of their tenures. Get at me at the end of the season.

So

How do you like Anthony Smith and Ruvell Martin at least as prospects?

by tkiller314 on Sep 24, 2009 7:56 PM CDT reply actions

to be honest

I don’t know much about either. I do know, though, that Anthony Smith is probably a special teams addition since the James Butler/OJ Atogwe duo is as good as any safety duo in the league.

I think...

their best prospects are in telling that team about our offense and defense. Didn’t really think about that angle earlier but they have a key offensive and defensive player on their team…gives the Rams a little boost in that they can gleam some good info about our tendencies.

Bulger

Can he resurrect his career ?

by Squatbulk on Sep 25, 2009 8:24 AM CDT reply actions

Yes

but not with these Rams. He just doesn’t have the weapons he did when Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt were at the peak of their careers.

Biggest concern...

I am not scurred of the Rams but they do pose a few threats. How do the packers, after getting lit up like the 4th of July by Benson, plan to slow down a back like Jackson. Granted Jackson hasn’t had a huge game yet but with one great performance against the run and one poor one, now they face (arguably) their toughest challenge at that position. Aside from that there aren’t any glaring areas I am concerned about. I like Avery and Robinson but I don’t see them as anyone that scares me with Harris and Woodson out there. I don’t know much about the Rams d.

Steven Jackson is one of

the most hampered backs in football. He’s averaging more than 5 yards per carry on a team that is struggling to form any kind of a passing offense, and he hasn’t hit 20 carries in either game. The Rams have to pass better and convert more third downs to get Jackson the ball.
