Packers 21, Rams 9 |
Inactives from NFL.com: SS Atari Bigby, LT Chad Clifton, and RB Brandon Jackson are all listed because they're all out with injuries. It's no surprise that FB Quinn Johnson and T Breno Giacomini are listed again since they've been inactive for every game this season. The only new face, healthy inactive, is DE Michael Montgomery, who's gotten some playing time on defense in the first two games, but now he's apparently losing playing time to rookie DE Jarius Wynn.

but Colledge should NOT be playing that left tackle spot come next week. We might see Jared Allen set an NFL record.

McCarthy NEVER benches his guys part of the way through a game.
Even if it goes against all common sense.
He does that all the time...
McCarthy has pulled Bush, Winn, Wells, Jackson, Jones, Nelson for a few plays or a whole series. Especially if they are making errors, and it doesn’t look like the player is going to correct them on his own. He has a longer leash with veterans.

I should point out my comment
is directed about offensive lineman, although that contradicts your statement about Wells. I haven’t seen him do it unless someone’s injured…
The OL is bad as ever
but you also have to accept the Rams’ coverage has been pretty impressive so far. I suppose it helps when you only have to rush four to get through our wet tissue of a line, but still….

The problem with Ryan Grant
I think, is his agility, seems like it takes him 5x longer than average to turn around and cut back or whatever. Great straight-ahead runner and moves his feet a lot, but it doesn’t help him when he can’t sidestep left or right quickly.
He can cut
But not quickly. The play calling doesn’t help him at all. Delay-draws are not his strong suit.

I criticized Clifton for not cutting the backside pursuit on zone right plays...
and Colledge does the exact same thing. He should be better, because he doesn’t have a surgically reconstructed lower body, like Clifton. Backside pursuit running free drives coaches crazy.

Defence looks OK
Kept us in the game (and the Rams’ half of the field) 1st Quarter
I haven't been able to watch the last two games,
But is Grant looking like he’s confused and lost his cut back abilities? Is he injured?
Not injured, not confused
But I don’t see a lot of agility from him. Just runs straight ahead and keeps moving his feet.

I always hope that we lose the toss.

I'm not in love with that 2-5-4 defensive formation
Something is going wrong up top. I can’t believe that this plan calls for Chillar to single cover that FB.

The reason I suspect that Chillar is expecting help up top...
is that he seems to be playing the receiver in trail coverage. He’s fast enough to close on the ball against that FB. At least on that last TD before the half, I think a safety was supposed to be there also.

How many different ways are they going to find to make Hawk look slow today?
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 27, 2009 1:53 PM CDT reply actions
I think he's just miscast.
He’d be alright as a MLB in a 4-3, or in an old fashined 3-4 where he’s just asked to plug holes on the interior of the line if it were, say, 1983 or so.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 27, 2009 1:55 PM CDT up reply actions
I always thought of Hawk
as a great blitzer, huge guy who can rush the passer and play the run well and be adequate in coverage.
Which is why I’m a bit perplexed to see him play so average-ly in the 3-4. I was a big advocate of Green Bay picking Laurinitis or Maualaga in the draft, by the way, to move Barnett outside and pair Hawk with them. Instead they took Matthews and put him where I would put Barnett.
I'm not sure Barnett would all that good outside.
He’s got the build for it but he’s never done it. At this point I’m just glad we’ve got one interior LB who can pursue, but he gets caught up in the wash too much.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 27, 2009 2:01 PM CDT up reply actions
I always thought he would be better there
Because he’s quick, good in coverage, and can play the run.
He should’ve been outside years ago, I think. But you’re right that he’s out there a bit much.
Whoops
I meant that you’re right he’s been at MLB out a bit much to switch now.
Damn 10am west coast games..
I always thought so to.
I thought he’d be inside for a year or two and then flop outside in the old 4-3 they were running.

The funny thing is he was making those decisions well last year when there was less pressure.
Everything about his game is just a little off right now, most likely because he’s not comfortable in the pocket. Sometimes he holds the ball too long and sometimes he breaks from the pocket too soon.
by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Sep 27, 2009 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions
Uncomfortable in the pocket
Understanable given the number of times he’s been on his ass this year so far. It’s better today, but it’s been bad

The DL isn't getting blown off the ball, but the MLBs are making the rush defense look bad.
The fact that I haven’t seen Martin in a tackle all day suggests he isn’t helping either. Though maybe I’m just missing him in the piles.

3 fgs in the first quarter was sad. still can’t run. LB’s still aren’t making plays. I’m not looking forward to playing a good team like the vikings. Rodgers and the receivers are going to have to carry us in the game, and Woodson/Harris need a pick each.

injured
isn’t crosby injured? he’s been pretty good since he’s been here, he’s the least of our worries in terms of people not playing up to par this year.
Abdominal strains can linger.
Even when he feels fine, the violence of the kicking motion can cause twinges of pain. It’s possible he feels it on some kicks, and not others. Hopefully the bye week heals him up for good.
If Kapinos can kick off, though… I would consider using him in that role. Save Crosby for FGs and PATs. McCarthy is probably not that adventurous.

Grant looked better today and the offense actually seemed to do better. (Probably because MM finally called a good game.) The ILB’s are really starting to worry me. Our problem isn’t the dline at all. Hawk looked slow today. Barnett still isn’t at 100%. Chillar struggled. The only bright sopt was Bishop coming in and playing well. They’ll need to improve for next week.
It’s not a stretch to say we’ll have 2 picks. Favre led the Vikes on that great drive but he looked so-so aside from that. He only completed 50 some % of his passes and really should have had 2 other balls picked off. If we can force the Vikes to try and win with Favre throwing the ball I like our chances.
