This is why the Vikings needed to get Favre. Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels would not have conducted this drive, much less made that throw.

As if next Monday couldn't be more intriguing.

It certainly was a great throw

But I’m very tired of watching it. No, I didn’t click the video above.

Depressing

We could’ve had next week’s game be a showdown for first place. Although I guess if we make them drop a game, that would put us ahead of them as well since we’d own victories over them and Chicago.

still a showdown for first

We’d have the tiebreaker if we win next week so we are in first if we win and second (or third) if we lose.

by TrevorR on Sep 28, 2009 11:27 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

and, it's why...

The Packers could still use Brett Favre … Sorry to say so, but Aaron Rodgers can not conduct such a drive yet. he might be able to make that throw, but most likely not with that little time left.

Big note to Mike McCarthy !!! ok, the Rams are by far one of the worse teams in the league, but you need to get Rodgers OUT of the pocket more often, that’s when he does the most damage with his arm!

by Jarlsberg on Sep 28, 2009 3:04 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Stop it. Just. Stop.

No, it’s not why the Packers could still use Favre. The Packers have absolutely no use for Favre, and haven’t since he retired.

You say Rodgers can’t conduct a drive like that, yet there he was in Week 1, throwing the game winning touchdown to Jennings with a little over a minute left. He did this several times last year as well and the defense couldn’t hold, every time. For every desperate, last minute touchdown that Favre gives, there’s a desperate, last minute interception to kill the team’s chances. Rodgers doesn’t do those.

And, not that it needs to be rehased, but we really need to just get over it already. Favre is never going to be a Packer again. Ever. And it’s for the good of the franchise. He’s turned his back on the fanbase, the people that adored him for a decade and a half, he spit on your favorite team and you’re still clamoring for him? You guys are worse than the needy ex-boyfriends who got dumped by a girl and now that she’s dating someone else, you keep trying to get her back. Just. Stop.

Plus

anyone watching the game would note pretty clearly that the 49ers got away from what had given them success all game. They had been consistently pressuring Favre and forced a number of bad throws, including a pick. On the last drive, they dropped back 8 and rushed only 3, giving Favre plenty of time to find holes in the zone. They bet that the Vikes would run out of time before getting to the end zone. They were wrong.

by jglowack on Sep 28, 2009 2:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly!!!

I just couldn’t figure that out. I hate when coordinators get all conservative at the end of games. Had they continued to bring pressure, the Vikes wouldn’t have won that game. But oh well.

Your kidding

Favre would be horrible if he were on our team this year. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but anytime a defender comes near him he drops to the ground. Instead of us allowing 12 sacks so far, it would be like 20 sacks. Favre is gone. He won’t ever come back.

Rodgers just conducted a game-winning drive week 1 and conducted plenty more last season only to have our defense negate his efforts.

And I actually with the last thing you said. Rodgers is excellent throwing on the run, and outside of the pocket.

by packallday555 on Sep 28, 2009 11:11 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

sure...

if he sits on the bench the entire game and comes in JUST for those drives. He would NOT be able to make this team run as well as Rodgers. He’s NOT mobile anymore, our line is terrible and without Rodgers feet last game we probably lose it. Jarlsburg, you can love the guy, that is fine but please stop being delusional.

YOu are right about getting him out of the pocket…when there actually IS a pocket. He’s very good on the run, just like Favre was in his prime.

by TrevorR on Sep 28, 2009 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

First of all, take the defense (Packers D in this case) out of the equation, they are not on the field when the offense are!

How can you compare one play, (with 1.24 + timeouts) with a great wr vs an has-been CB (who also slipped) to a 6 play (+ some spikes) 80-yds drive in 1.27 minutes with no timeouts and a linedrive throw to an average wr to end it ??? (yes, it was a great catch, but still the ball had to get there, had it been a split second later, Lewis would have been OOB)
The one play in the Bears game was a called play-action, the Packers offense executed it very well, the Bears defense bought the run fake, Jennings beat Vasher one-on-one… it was a very easy throw for Rodgers. He didn’t do it once last season, remember, the Packer LOST those game, wether or not the defense held up or not, they LOST ! Rodgers had at least four shots on a last minutes drives, two ended with interceptions. Two ended in missed FGs, neither of them were “gimmes” when you consider all factors.

Favre’s throw was a tread-the-needle throw, on a win it or lose it play, there were a lot of white jerseys around that one purple. + Favre’s last minute “desperation” throws are more 2 to 1 in Favre’s favor, AND the key factor, a win is everything, if you loose because you run out of time (with the ball in posession) or if you lose on a last second interception, it does NOT matter, a loss is still a loss. I would much rather have a QB who wins two out of three in those situations, than a QB who doesn’t have the guts to take a chance.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, there is A LOT of positives with Rodgers, but so far he’s not been the clutch-QB that Favre has always been, if he turns into one with more experience, only time will tell.

I realise Favre will never be a Packer again, but I stil think Thompson screwed up when he nudged him out the door in March 2008, instead of being a serious contender, the Packers went 6-10 and watching the playoffs on TV.

“I realise Favre will never be a Packer again, but I stil think Thompson screwed up when he nudged him out the door in March 2008, instead of being a serious contender, the Packers went 6-10 and watching the playoffs on TV.”

First off it’s realiZe. Second the only reason we weren’t a contender was our defense. Go look at our offensive stats from 07’ to 08’, and the Favre’s stats compared to Rodgers. If you don’t I’ll just fill you in, they are pretty much identical. But Favre was lucky to have Grant running like a good rb and having the 6th best scoring defense in the league. Rodgers had a dismal Grant and the 23rd best scoring defense in the league.

“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, there is A LOT of positives with Rodgers, but so far he’s not been the clutch-QB that Favre has always been, if he turns into one with more experience, only time will tell.”

Haha for crying out loud the guy just led us too victory week 1! And was it not clutch when Rodgers led us on a 10 minute drive against what would turn out to be a 12-4 Carolina Panther team, and got us the lead with 2:12 seconds left? Did he have any control over the defense letting the Panthers score in just 4 plays? How about when he led us 50 yards into FG range against the Vikes, only to have Crosby miss a FG as time expired? Or when we played the Bears week 16, and led us 60+ yards, setting up a 30 yard field goal for Crosby to win the game, only to see it get blocked. Or how about when he led us on a drive against the Jaguars to give us a 3 point lead, only to have the defense give up a TD. Hell, we could even look at the Texans game if you wanted.

You Favre-lovers are soo ridiculous. Despite the fact that he has only won 1 championship for us, and choked soo many times in the playoffs for us, the guy can do no wrong.

“Favre’s throw was a tread-the-needle throw, on a win it or lose it play, there were a lot of white jerseys around that one purple.”

Wrong again. There were 2 defenders. One who was behind Lewis by like 5 feet, and the other was tripping. He had all day to run around back in the pocket (again something Rodgers hasn’t had in his time here).

“Rodgers had at least four shots on a last minutes drives, two ended with interceptions. Two ended in missed FGs, neither of them were "gimmes" when you consider all factors.”

Haha really? So getting the ball on our own 18, with 1:08 left, and no timeouts isn’t considered an opportunity to win? Weren’t “gimmes”? Crosby had been 100% from 50+ that season and he in a dome, which always have perfect conditions. The other was a 30 yard chip-shot. Tell me how that wasn’t a gimme?

Really? Even when he’s doing it for our most hated division rival out of spite towards the organization you root for? How is this hard? How could you not hate his guts?

Well...

I dislike Favre as much as the next person (in fact, I was saying he should’ve been out after the 2004 season). But you do have to have a level of respect for someone who at 40 can still play in the NFL, considering there are a number of people in their 20s who cannot (for example, Joey Harrington).

You don’t have to like the guy, but you should have the courtesy to tip your cap.

Now, courtesy moment over, let’s plan on sacking him a half dozen times next week.

by Danwood on Sep 28, 2009 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Perhaps

he’s one of those freaks who feels one can support a team without trying to work up some laughable level of “hatred” for another team?

I’m glad he’s gone but still have huge admiration for his skills.

Don’t try to act like you’re above the basic language of sports fans. No, I don’t hate Brett Favre in the same way that beauty queens hate illiteracy and world poverty. But I don’t like him and I don’t want him to succeed when he is competing directly against my team. And he is.
If anything, it’s freakish to hold on to someone who holds the organization you support in such contempt.

I honestly can’t believe there are people out there who still support Favre after all the bullshit. It’s unbelievable. He’s obviously a selfish liar, but half the fanbase wants to look past that and wish him the best. I can assure you he’s not wishing Aaron Rodgers the best.

by Weldon on Sep 28, 2009 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with the guy above...

I can’t hate Brett FAvre…he was too great, too special for us here. If we dont’ make it to the playoffs, I’m rooting for Favre.

Having said that, you have to be OUT of your MIND to want FAvre instead of Rodgers. We would have lost Rodgers to free agency and he’s going to be here for the next ten years. If we had that could block, Rodgers would be putting up huge numbers.

And think about how Favre has broken down now for 2 straight seasons in December and January. He’s going to hit 40 real soon.

Also Favre never started the first three games of a season without an INT. Another Favre mark that Rodgers has topped.

Ok, New York Viking

Why do the Red Sox and Yankees hate each other? Go ahead and explain that, then substitute “Red Sox” and “Yankees” with “Packers” and “Vikings,” and you’ll have your answer.

I hate your team, and their purple shirts, and their stupid dome with the lousy seats and sightlines, and their piped in crowd noise, and those stupid Helga hats with the braids, and Fran Tarkenton, and Chuck Foreman, and Bud Grant, and the freaking Purple People Eaters, and John Randle, and Chris Hovan, and Randy Moss, and audibles by our third string QB’s, and those sparkly purple helmets that looks like they should be worn by a Solid Gold Dancer, and Jared Allen, and I hate the fact that your teams nickname is so much cooler than ours, and SKOL!!!! whatever the hell that means, and that otherwise unemployed middle-aged dude who wears the dead ferrets for a shirt on the sidelines, and Wisconsinites-from- River-Falls-and-Hudson-and-LaCrosse-who-root-for-the-damn-Vikings-because-the-Packers-sucked-for-20-years-when-they-were-kids: I stuck it out why couldn’t you, you stinking front runners?!!?!, and… and…. and….
