Packers Put Together Potential-Laden Practice Squad, But Lose Sutton

The Packers secured several promising young players for their practice squad, but lost Tyrell Sutton in the process.

Sutton, an undrafted free-agent from Northwester, looked poised to crack the 53-man roster after an impressive preseason,. But on cut day, the Packers opted to keep only three running backs, sending Sutton to the waiver wire. Sutton's strong performance in the preseason made it highly unlikely that the back would go unclaimed off waivers, and sure enough, he was claimed by the Carolina Panthers this morning.

Although the Packers didn't land Sutton, they did manage to keep several promising young players as part of the organization. I'll give my thoughts on each one of them after the jump.

Star-divide

Green Bay's 2009 Practice Squad

  • Brian Brohm (QB)- Placing Brohm, a second round pick of two years ago, on the practice squad was an ideal move for the Packers. For one, it sends a wake-up call to the young man, telling him that he needs to elevate his game to make it in this league. Additionally, it doesn't waste a roster spot on a player that probably had no shot of seeing the field this year (although there may be special rules for #3 QBs and 53 man limit, I can't remember). That being said, if a serious injury should befell Aaron Rodgers or Matt Flynn, the Pack can activate Brohm from the practice squad and have a young quarterback with two years experience in their system at their disposal. The bottom line is this: Brohm is a talented passer who has struggled to adapt to the NFL. Giving him some more time on the practice squad is exactly what the doctor ordered.
  • Kregg Lumpkin (RB)- Last year, Kregg Lumpkin shined in the preseason to beat out veterans Vernard Morency and Noah Herron, landing a spot on the Packers 53 man roster as an undrafted free-agent. However, this preseason saw Lumpkin falter, including a fumbling problem in games and practice. Clearly, Lumpkin has some NFL potential. He's a powerful, north-south runner, the type Mike McCarthy loves. Landing him on the practice squad was another success story for the Packers' management. Should Brandon Jackson fail to recover from his ankle injury in a timely fashion, the Pack can turn to Lumpkin.
  • Jake Allen (WR)- In July, Jake Allen was the talk of training camp. The 6'4 receiver had drawn some attention to himself after making a series of spectacular catches, demonstrating some impressive athleticism. But Allen's play in practice did not translate to the playing field, as he failed to make a mark in any of the preseason games. Meanwhile, Brett Swain impressed coaches with his steady improvement and contributions on special teams. With Swain's ascension, Allen's odds of making the team were long. However, his play-making potential certainly warranted another look, and thus, the Packers made the right decision and brought him back for another year on the practice squad.
  • Jamon Meredith (OT)- Meredith is the only member of the Packers' 2009 draft class not to make the 53 man roster.  However, this certainly isn't for a lack of talent. Coming out of South Carolina, the athletic lineman was projected as high as the second round. Character issues apparently pushed him all the way back to the fifth, where he was selected by Green Bay. In camp and in preseason games, Meredith had impressive moments, but he remained very raw. Like Breno Giacomin a year before him, Ted Thompson decided a year on the practice squad would serve Meredith well. The kid has a ton of potential and, with some work on his technique, could serve as a candidate for Chad Clifton's replacement.
  • Ronald Talley (DE)- Talley, an undrafted free agent out of Deleware, has ideal size for a 3-4 end. His work in off-season try-outs and training camp practices clearly led the staff to believe he would be a good fit for the Packers new defense. However, the 3-4 is certainly a double-edged sword in this regard: while Talley fit the scheme, fewer linemen are kept. As a result, Talley's chances at making the roster were not good. Stowing him on the practice squad was a great move by the Pack, as he'll get another opportunity to compete for a spot next summer, while also waiting in the wings should an injury strike.
  • Anthony Toribio (NT)- Toribio has been fairly impressive this preseason. His 304 pound, 6'1 frame makes him a solid nose tackle. However, much like in Talley's case, there just weren't enough spots on the roster for him. His performance thus far has given him another year on the practice squad, and allow him another opportunity to make the team next year.
  • Cyril Obiozor (OLB)- "Obe," as he is known around Green Bay, is an ideal 3-4 outside linebacker, in the mold of a Demarcus Ware. He has excellent size, strength, explosion, and a ton of potential. These traits were clearly recognized by coach Kevin Greene, who made Obiozor his "special project" throughout training camp. However, when it came time to set the 53 man roster, Obiozor remained too raw and the Packers too deep at linebacker. There were concerns about him not making it through waivers to the practice squad, but fortunately they went unrealized. Obiozor is a great addition to this squad and certainly has the ability to be a force as a pass-rusher. It may just take some more time and development, which is exactly what he'll get on the practice squad.
  • Trevor Ford (CB)- Ford appeared to have a very poor preseason, especially after an embarrassing performance against the Titans in the finale. However, he is just a rookie, and the Packers are willing to give him a second chance, albeit on the practice squad.

All in all, I am extremely pleased with our practice squad. While it was unfortunate that we couldn't hang on to Sutton, we managed to keep some very promising rookies, including Meredith and Obiozor. Additionally, we'll be able to give Brohm and Lumpkin one last chance to prove themselves, while also keeping them around in case they need to be activated. Excellent work by Thompson and the rest of the gang.

All Packer practice squad

I thought they might grab someone released from another team. It’s impossible to know who GM Ted Thompson has his eye on from outside the organization. I didn’t expect Brohm to clear waivers and onto the practice squad; I didn’t expect his stock had fallen that much. But it’s great that he’s still around. Keeping Jamon Meredith was another nice move; he’s got a lot of potential. I’m not really excited about any of the other players. Nothing bad, just no future starters in the group, except Toribio might be a useful player in the defensive line rotation.

Obe's got potential

There’s a reason why Greene was infatuated with him.
And by potential-laden I wasn’t attempting to imply that we’ve got 8 future pro-bowlers on our squad, but instead that we’ve put together a nice group of players that could certainly develop into solid contributors.

Sutton almost cleared waivers

Carolina was #28 on the waiver priority list, and behind them were the Giants, Titans, Cardinals, and Steelers, none of whom are hurting for RBs. So close. Doh!

Many Packer followers have commented that Sutton fans were getting too carried away about a fourth stringer. I’m not convinced he was anything special, not as far as breaking long runs anyway, but if his specialty is to reliably squirt through the hole for 5-6 yards, that’s a far sight better than Wynn or Lumpkin running up the backs of the OL and losing a yard. What good is speed or power if you can’t find the hole? (that’s what she said.) It’s a natural instinct that’s hard to teach. So I think the Packers missed out on some worthy potential. But it likely came down to him versus one of the fullbacks, and keeping such solid contributors over a 4th RB who can’t help on special teams is an easy argument to agree with.

RBs have more than one job

Did Sutton look like he had some moves and quick burst? Absolutely.

Could he block reliably enough to pick up blitzes? No.
Could he catch passes out of the backfield on passing downs? Not really.
Did he have breakaway speed that could change games? Not really.
Could he contribute on special teams, either as a returner or in coverage? Not really.

Although I liked the consistency he showed in his one skill, he had too many other holes in his game, holes that we fans are not always quick to note, to allow him to win a spot. However, the Packers liked his skill enough that he could have made the practice squad. I would have been interested to see if the Pack would have dropped Lumkin from the PS for Sutton…

Good points but

Compare him to Jackson. I mean at least Sutton is great in one aspect of the game (great moves and quick burst) as opposed to Jackson who is average in every aspect. Jackson doesn’t have breakaway speed. Jackson isn’t quick, and shifty. He is an ok pass catcher. He is an ok pass blocker. Not sure about STs, though I assume he probably contributes, and also assume that was why he was kept over Sutton. I know he was a 2nd round pick, but the guy has never impressed me. I think Wynn will become the #2 RB this year, as he looked like a different player this preseason then last.

If you look at the preseason only

Don’t forget Jackson had almost 5.5 yards per carry last season. And he’s a good receiver, 30 catches in 2008, but usually just as a dump off or on another busted screen attempt. I wish they actually ran some plays for him as a receiver. Plus he’s only 23 years old since he came out of college early.

True

Good point about his age. I didn’t realize how young he is, and he could still have a good amount of potential left.

pssst ted...news flash!

I’m not sure but….I think a good veteran QB would be a smart move at this time! might be a good idea to sign one just in case? hopefully this will nudge you in the right direction.

With all due respect

We should not be in any rush to pick up mediocre veteran QBs sitting unemployed immediately. Tying up a roster spot with one of those expensive players is not really going to add to the protection we have if Rodgers and/or Flynn get hurt to the point where they would be unable to play.

Why do I say this? Well, first, those “barely viable” veterans tend to be available later in the season— they are not exactly scarce. Second, these players usually have the knowledge to come in without a huge amount of lead time since they have been part of offenses for so long. Thus, losing a young talent to bring in a has-been or never-was makes no sense whatsoever— especially when you consider that our season will most likely be in tatters anyhow should Rodgers and Flynn be out at the same time for any significant period.

GARCIA

Garcia isn’t one of my favorite players…but he is available,he knows the west coast offense,he has played in the 4-3 and 3-4,he’s tough and isn’t afraid to take a hit or run with the ball…..as a backup? you could do worse! It seems to me….he’s your best option in case of injury at this time.

Garcia

So tell me how would one of Garcia’s patented fluttering ducks look like in Lambeau in Oct, Nov, Dec?? Any idea how a ball that already has alot of wiggle would fly in the wind in Lambeau in winter?? I’ll answer that for you it would fall to the turf about 10 yds short of its target, and thats on a 15 yd pass!!! Garcia has an absolute NOODLE arm! No way he could play even reasonably well in GB. He would be an ubmittigated disaster.

So not worth even wasting a roster spot on!!!

Flynn

I think people underrate and undervalue this guy a bit. Bringing in a veteran QB wouldn’t really do us a lot of good because our offense is a difficult one to learn. At least Flynn has been with us learning the offense, and watching Rodgers execute it. I would honestly rather have Flynn running our offense then Garcia, or some other veteran backup.

Flynn

Before he got hurt, he looked really sharp this preseason. I’m sure that played a big part in their decision to risk losing Brohm on waivers.
