Tex's Friday Preview - Cardinals
In case anyone cares, I had a blast at the Packers-Seahawks game last week. Tailgating with a member of the Packers' Board (who gave us several shots of Goldschlager to get us "prepared" for the game), enjoying an enormous spread of brats, snacks, and drinks prepared by our hosts, and seeing a tremendous butt-whipping made the weekend fantastic.
But enough about last week. Now we move on to week 17, which I think matters very little to either the Packers or the Cardinals. Certainly, with a very likely rematch the following week, neither team will tip their hand. The way I see it, the only team with anything significant to play for is the Cardinals, since there's an outside chance they could still get the 2nd seed and a first-round bye. The guys over at the DN have broken it down, and it can only happen if the Cards beat our Packers and the Giants and Cowboys both win. It's an unlikely scenario, but not unreasonable.
Anyhow, here's what I'll be watching for.
1. Cards' WRs
As was evident from the Steelers game, a team with more than one or two legitimate receiving threats will cause serious problems for the Packers' thin secondary. Naturally, the Cardinals have three in Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Breaston. I would expect Charles Woodson to be Larry Fitzgerald's shadow, while Tramon Williams is matched up on whoever is wide on the other side. The slot receiver, whether Boldin or Breaston, will be the problem. A Williams-Boldin matchup worries me as well because of "Q"'s size and strength.
2. Playing Time
How long will either teams' starters play? I have no clue. Everyone's talking about this being a glorified preseason game, but I think both Ken Whisenhunt and Mike McCarthy subscribe to the theory of momentum carrying into the playoffs, and that they'll play their starters until the game is out of reach one way or the other. I'm not sure whether I buy that theory or not, but I'm confident that they'll play to win without giving away any real playbook secrets in this game.
3. Trick Plays
The playbook brings me to my third point. I have a hunch that one of the head coaches (my guess is Whisenhunt) will try to throw the other off with a load of trick plays, setting them up for a more vanilla offense in the potential second game. I'm going to be looking for flea-flickers, end-arounds, and reverse passes much more so in this game than in others.
Of course, I could be wrong on all counts. That's the beauty of this game.
On an unrelated note, how about the Badgers on Tuesday? To echo the sentiments from The Rivalry, Esq., the Big Ten SBNation blog, we all knew that the Badgers would be bigger than the Hurricanes, but faster too? Awesome.

The thing that worries me the most...
Is the Card’s receivers. I think the pack can match up well when they don’t have to cover as many top tier receivers. Teams like the cards and the steelers are where I can see problems.
BTW, Glad you had fun at the Packer’s Game

Badgers
Their were great Tuesday against “The U”. I loved watching John Clay run defenders over, and Ball looks like he’ll be a good Rb in the future. They scared the hell out of me when they let Miami recover that onside kick though haha.
Sorry I didn’t say anything about the Cards game. I really don’t have any idea how that game is going to be played out. I personally don’t think we should rest our starters just because we’ve built up some nice momentum these past 7-8 weeks. Maybe if the o-line is getting manhandled, and Rodgers is getting hit a lot we can rest him, along with Tauscher and Clifton. Another thing to consider is we’re not exactly the deepest team and it’s not like we really have backups at some positions….Should be interesting to see how the game turns out.
