Open Thread: Vikings at Saints
Here's the game most of us will probably be watching. Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints.
I expect a Saints victory because RB Adrian Peterson hasn't played like an elite running back this season. Football Outsiders predicts the game is a push, advantage to the Saints because the Vikings are dealing with more injuries, but FO also expect a good game from AP. Of course, AP has been great plenty of times during his career and is more than capable at having another big game against a bad run defense. And of course, whoever wins the turnover battle is going to be in the driver's seat.

I'm all for the Aints
But that’s the Packer homer in me talking. I do think the Saints can score at will, though, and stop AP. Whether they can keep a lid on the passing game is another question.
I predict a shoot-out

Sheesh, here is my thinking...
I think whoever pressures the opposing QB more, wins. But I think before the Cardinals fell behind big last week, they were running the ball well on Narleans…so the Vikes can run on them… I kind of lean toward Minny here, hate to say.
I'm thinking New Orleans
If it were in Minneapolis, I would think differently but I just don’t see Brett being able to pull one out in a hostile environment like this. Also, I have doubts about this defense’s ability on the road against a solid offensive line (Dallas had both of their starting tackles out most of the game, sound familiar?) and if the Vikings can’t get pressure on Brees, he will carve them up at will.
me too
But Charlie brought up a good point about Dallas losing their tackles. If Breees can stay upright, he will carve up minnesota’s secondary.
Caldwell from Wisconsin?

Question:
IF Favre was coming into this game with no Superbowl ring, would you feel differently about rooting for him?
Great question.
I don’t think I would. I root for Packers and some select players like Peyton Manning. Would this be equivalent to rooting for Marino since he had no rings? I don’t know.

I don't see either the Saints or Vikings beating the Colts...
The Jets do everything the Vikings do defensively, only better, and they only held the Colts down for about 20 minutes of game play. The only chance the Vikes or Saints have is to score with them and get the ball last.

This game is so tough to predict
MN is 4-4 on the road, just a mediocre team. However, they match up well against NO.

If Brees gets this amount of time..
it’s over….
So the Score...
New Orleans 14, Vikings-Referrees 14
If you're doing the splits, it's really 14-(7+7)
Second drive the refs clearly got 7 points
I think the Colts can beat MN if they play each other. With Favre being in the shotgun 50% of the time, Freeney and Mathis will get to him

This game is really coming down to
Greg Williams versus Leslie Frazier
Short pass
Favre’s only at 5.7 yards/attempt which isn’t very good. They are moving the ball, but too afraid Favre will take hits. And not opening it up down field, and not getting enough from AP since his big TD run.
That sounds good to me!
And yet another shot on favre
Part of that is by design though...
… they’re trying to hold the ball and keep the NO offense off the field too.

Might not be a bad thing
If Favre is gimpy, who knows what’s going to happen. AP has butter fingers, and if Brett starts floating a few balls, more picks
Not sure I buy it.
Favre has been a bit of a drama queen this year. Lots of hobbling around, telling folks he might not be able to play in the Packer game, and then tada! There he is. Good as new. I’m sure that hit hurt, but I don’t think it was as bad as he made it look when he was being helped off the field. Just like he was rolling around on the ground until he drew the flag a few plays earlier and then grinning ear to ear a minute later.

I posted an article Brett Favre: A User's Guide on DN way back before the season...
… I got some of it wrong. Never thought he’d limit his pick total to 7 at this point of his career. But I warned them about the mind-blowing, crippling lat game pick at the worst moment. I’ll admit I was starting to wonder if he’d avoid it all year, but lo and behold, there it was. At the worst moment.

Well..
… the Vikes were handed 2 TD’s by getting cheap penalties on 3rd down, not to mention the personal fouls for clean hits on Favre… but whatever. I agree the refs were bad; the calls were uneven, but unless the refs made the Vikes fumble 5 times and Favre throw those picks, I’m pretty sure the Vikes lost it on their own.

Yeah, really
They won, but the Saints played like shit.
But once again, the Vikes find a way to lose (7 turnovers)
Pretty pathetic that the Saints needed OT to get past a team turning the ball over that much...
… they just didn’t play very well, and even on that last drive, they were playing like they were afraid of screwing it up. If they don’t deal with that in the next week or so, the Colts will blow them out.

I do have to wonder
How much the Viking fans will complain about the officiating, after giving us Packer fans shit for questioning the officiating in the Packers/Cardinals games. I’m sure they won’t let hypocrisy get in the way.
I was getting to that before.
They came here and mocked us immediately after we lost. Karma guys.

Yep, only we legitimately had something too complain about. The Vikings got SO many calls.
by packallday555 on Jan 24, 2010 9:30 PM CST up reply actions
And
We fought to win the game, and it didn’t work out.
They found ways to cough up turnovers left and right.
Not only that, but
it was only the fans who were complaining.
When the classy Aaron Rodgers was asked about the refs, he answered that he had to take care of his own mistakes before he worried about somebody else’s.
And Mike McCarthy said that it was on the team to make sure it wasn’t in the position for it to matter; that if you started relying on refs calls to win games, then you were in ‘excuses’ mode.
-
The glass is more than half-full.
They already are complaining over at DS
