Why every Packer fan should root for the Colts in Super Bowl XLIV

Last year on November 24th, I watched our beloved Packers play the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football on ESPN. This was just as things were spiraling out of control for the Pack as they were struggling mightily and this game also proved how porous and vulnerable the Packer D was as Drew Brees had a field day on the Packer secondary, passing for 323 yards.

I was upset that my guys were losing but the thing that drove me over the edge and what happened that made me vow to never root for the Saints EVER (except when playing the Vikings or the Bears, of course), was when after the Saints scored a late 4th quarter TD..........AND WENT FOR AND MADE THE 2 POINT CONVERSION AFTERWARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldnt believe Sean Peyton did that or the Brees went along with it? WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU GO FOR 2 WHEN YOU'RE BEATING A TEAM BY 3 TDS?!?!?!?!?! I was infuriated as I hope many other Packer fans were.

So, all I have to say for the super Bowl is the following: Go Colts, Go Manning, and Kick the Saints' Ass.

Any reason to root for the Colts

is fine by me =p

My friends ask me what ould happen if the Packers and Colts met in the super bowl, since they know how much I love the Packers too. I always say that obviously the Colts come first for me, but Green Bay would be the one team that I’d have some consolation in if they beat the Colts. They used to be a distant second for me, but since Aaron Rodgers was drafted and the event of two years ago especially, they’ve closed the gap significantly. Thanks for the best wishes!

The Saints Made My Dreams Come True

I live in MN, for school, and I’ll be rooting for the Saints. They ended the whole Favre debacle. It was hell living here during the Purple Favre season, really, it sucked. I’m really happy that Favre sold so many jerseys, because now they reflect happy momires of the game sealing interception.

A small piece of my heart belongs to the Saints forever, because they ended this sick joke. Who dat?!

I respect that

because I absolutely hate Brett Favre now. But, I just cant overlook a team basically disrespecting my team, you know?

+1

I think I agree…I am eternally grateful that they kept the Vikes from making it there (Favre or not) cause I live in MN and its WAY more fun to listen to KFAN now that they are (as I type) still complaining about the Favre INT.

What that 2-point conversion is to intercepting Brent is what a drop of water is to the ocean

I really don’t care what they did last year. We were awful anyways. they screwed Favre and there’s not a city more deserving of a SB win. Go Saints!

I heartily agree with all of that

Plus, wouldn’t it be more dramatic if Peyton’s team lost? If they do lose, I believe he still is going to have a little bit of that choker label.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

GO Saints.

I’m tired of seeing people dick ride Payton Manning. I’m hoping Bree’s and company get that 1st championship.

They want power. We want respect...

Say what you want, Drew Brees is the classiest guy in the NFL

People talk about Favre getting “screwed” by the Packers. Do you know who REALLY got screwed this past decade? Drew Brees, by the Chargers. The guy gave his all to San Diego and they didn’t do anything for the guy and then dumped him for Temper-tantrum Rivers. Did Brees call out ownership in the media? Did he throw a hissy fit on the field? Nope, just went about on his business. That’s an upstanding guy.

by Danwood on Jan 27, 2010 12:19 PM CST reply actions

I agree that Drew is a classy guy.
I didn’t see his departure from the Chargers happen quite the way you did. Drew was slow to get things rolling with that team. It wasn’t until his fourth season (2004) that it started to click for him which happens to be the year they drafted Rivers. My opinion is that at that point, they had already planned on moving on from Brees but then he won the starting job because Rivers held out. Suddenly Brees has a really good year and they are stuck with a good QB and a rookie that they drafted highly. What are you to do?

I think they handled it well actually. They didn’t resign him and they let him sign where ever he wants…thats all a player can ask of a team, isn’t it?

by TrevorR on Jan 27, 2010 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe

He started only a handful of games his rookie season and we know that most QBs start out slow. The fact that he was playing well in 2004, technically his 2nd full season (since he didn’t start every game in 2003 either). They certainly didn’t have to let him go. Look at Arizona and Leinart/Warner.

Then after he took them to the playoffs in 04 and played well in 05 they offered him a BS contract. Hardly a sign of respect for the QB that pulled your team out of the dumpster.

by Danwood on Jan 27, 2010 3:20 PM CST up reply actions

Yes this is true
They certainly didn’t have to let him go. Look at Arizona and Leinart/Warner

but when they signed Warner he was supposed to back up Leinart, and you know the rest of the story.
Warner has a press conference scheduled for Friday to discuss his future. .

by Packerfan045 on Jan 27, 2010 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

Warner was signed before Leinart came out of USC. He was signed to a 1 year contract in 2005, played up and down that season, then was signed to a 3 year deal in Feb 2006, 2 months before Leinart was drafted. Warner was going to be the starter in 2006 but he sucked and they stuck in Leinart, who also sucked (remember, it was the Denny Green Cards).

by Danwood on Jan 27, 2010 4:27 PM CST up reply actions

You are totally right

I live in AZ and I can’t even keep their crap straight. I know here the hype was all about Leinart and how good he was and Warner was over the hill, washed up and what not. They put Leinart in he sucked and they were doing the two quarterback thing, which I never understand. Anyway that is why I am not a Cardinal fan and never will be. Way to set me straight. Thanks

Don't forget too

That Brees injured his throwing shoulder before he left San Diego — it was kinda risky for New Orleans to pick him up

by HankO on Jan 27, 2010 5:25 PM CST up reply actions

I still don’t see it as disrespectful.
I watched this situation closely. They drafted Rivers BECAUSE they didn’t think Brees was going to come around. He didn’t really look good until they drafted Rivers…that year it happened to click and they had to choose to have TWO QBs on the roster making HUGE money or let one of them leave the team

They could have franchised him and sent him off to some crap team. They could have franchised him and made him fight Rivers again for the job. They decided to move on unless he wanted to stick around for cheap. He got to play the market and choose his destination! I think that’s pretty amazing actually. How many teams let a QB of his caliber go with no compensation??? There is also the injury to take into account.

by TrevorR on Jan 28, 2010 12:26 AM CST up reply actions

They could have franchised him and made him fight Rivers again for the job.

Actually, they did Franchise him in 2004.

by Danwood on Jan 28, 2010 6:02 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah I know…I mean they could have done it once more and forced him somewhere else. I just think that the situation was handled the only way it could have been. They couldn’t trade Rivers (contractual hell) so they let Brees choose his future. He’s the better for it!

by TrevorR on Feb 1, 2010 7:47 AM CST up reply actions

Amen

I don’t see how Favre got screwed. Favre’s decisions put him where he is. GB didn’t force him to retire. Brees was literally screwed. He didn’t whine or complain like the Prima Donna QB in MN.

Not liking the Saints

Basically, against Warner and Favre, the Saints strategy was to try and injure the QB with cheap shots or whatever works. Greg Williams, more or less, said they were going to try and knock Manning out of the game. While I appreciate hard, tough, hitting football, I have no respect for a team that considers intentionally trying to hurt another a player as legitimate strategy.

by MikeDB on Jan 29, 2010 4:11 PM CST reply actions

When were there “cheap shots”? Many people will say the hit on Favre below the knees was but if you go back and look closely at the play McCray was stumbling after being pushed by an o-lineman. I guess you could call the block McCray threw on Warner a cheap shot but technically that was a legal block. Maybe McCray is a dirty player but to say their entire defense was taking cheap shots is ridiculous. The Saints are a physical defense, and have a lot of guys who can put a big hit on a Qb.

by packallday555 on Jan 30, 2010 1:34 PM CST up reply actions

Those weren't cheap shots

There was one play where a flag could have been thrown when a linemen landed on Favre’s lower legs, but let them play the game. Williams strategy is to get in the QB’s face. That is good defense.
