Green Bay Packers 2010 Opponents

With the second-place finish in the NFC North, the Packers' opponents for 2010 are set.  It appears to be fairly tough, but in my opinion, I think the Packers will be able to handle it.

Since the Packers are playing both the NFC East and AFC East, their schedule will have a distinctly northeastern impact.  All of their games will be in the Eastern and Central time zones.

And here we go, the 2010 Packers opponents are as follows:

Star-divide

Home:
Buffalo Bills
Chicago Bears
Dallas Cowboys
Detroit Lions
Miami Dolphins
Minnesota Vikings
New York Giants
San Francisco 49ers

Away:
Atlanta Falcons
Chicago Bears
Detroit Lions
Minnesota Vikings
New England Patriots
New York Jets
Philadelphia Eagles
Washington Redskins

What are your predictions for 2010?

Not an easy schedule for the NFC North next year. I had the same thoughts about ours. Lord, we better have a QB!

Bring in Jim Miller and Cade McNown while you're at it.

Who cares if he's a Cubs fan? This is a football forum! He is a PACKER fan as well. So, from now until March, I’m sure he’ll dedicate a lot of his time here. In late March, then we can be enemies during the baseball season. Besides, the Cubs have perhaps the most loyal baseball fanbase in the country. You have to respect that.

I could see the Pack getting anywhere from 9-12 wins

just depending on when in the season certain games are scheduled. If forced to predict, I’d say 11 wins, 7-1 at home, 4-4 on the road.

My feeling is, and I'm with you on this one.

9-12 wins next year, depending on how the scheduling works.

A return trip to the playoffs? Possible.

A lot can happen

Between now and training camp. Or now and that game.

The Packers are playing the AFC East next season. They always seem to lose to the Jets, and got smoked by the Jets and Pats at home in 2006. They also play the NFC East, and the random two games against the Falcons and 49ers. No soft matchups against fodder like the Browns and Rams next year.

The Packers can win all of those home games, but I’ll just expect 6 home wins. That means 5-3 on the road to repeat as 11-5. They won at Chicago last year, and have won at Detroit in every recent year. Can they win 3 games among the Falcons, Vikings, Pats, Jets, Eagles and Redskins? If they lose more than 3 of those 6 games, it’s likely a disappointing season.

by Brandon on Jan 28, 2010 11:27 AM CST reply actions

I would guess

Wins at NE and Washington, maybe even Atlanta.

If they can win those games, plus at Chicago and Detroit, 5-3 road mark.

Atlanta: collapsed last season after a hot start (can you say Chicago Bears?).
Washington: probably the most likely road win aside from Detroit.
New England: their defense IMPLODED down the stretch, and they likely will have to tear it apart in order to have it glue together in time for next year. A lot of their veterans from their Super Bowl years are getting old.

Viqueers we split 1 and 1, beat the Giants and the Jets, and I think we can beat the BEagles too! Falcons we beat and the Cryboys to because we got them at home! I’m seeing 14-2 dude! Patsies and one to the ‘queers, and one where we just flub the dub, so 13-3and that’s my final answer!

ITs a bit premature to call for a sweep of the Vikings.

Its really premature to do any of this though, any of these teams could look totally different. ON paper this is a dramatically tougher schedule in 2010 though. 11/12 wins is going to be tough.

by TrevorR on Jan 28, 2010 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, you never know how good teams may or may not be. If we can be stout against the run next season like we were this season, and improve our pass defense a bit I like our chances against any team because of how explosive our offense will be. But like you pointed out a lot can change from now to next season.

I agree TrevorR

From our side, I am expecting a split with the Packers, and that’s only if we have a QB. The schedule is a bunch tougher however when I looked at this year’s schedule I never expected Cincinnati to be that good. I also expected the Giants to be a tough game and they were out of it…. Definitely too early to predict other than possibly the head to head. We both know we will have somewhat similar teams.

About Free Agents

I just read in the Milwaukee Journal online that Touched-in-the-Head Ted wants to resign Aaron Kampman. WHY?!?! The guy is a great defensive end, and I got nothing but mad love for the guy, but he isn’t an OLB! The guy who took his place did a great job, filling up gaps and doing what needed to be done, basically putting a body on someone so Nick, Clay, or AJ could make a play! Let Aaron go play for someone that runs the 4-3, ask him to play for the Texans or the Chiefs maybe. But then again if Capers lets the D run wild like he did the last part of the season and Aaron can help with that, )like getting in the backfield in the opening round of the playoffs and knocking Kurt Warner on his ass!) maybe it’s a good move. I would really love to hear what Capers and LB coach Kevin Greene have to say.

by biggun33 on Jan 28, 2010 12:08 PM CST reply actions

It would be a good move. Kampman was coming around in the 3-4. Prior to his injury, Capers had granted him the freedom to put his down in the dirt whenever he felt necessary, and he was getting good pressure. He really was much better then some would have expected in coverage too. Sure, there were times where he allowed a quick little out to the running back, but we have to keep in mind that he has been playing as a 4-3 DE his whole career in the NFL.

Why this would be a good move is because Matthews appears like he will likely be an elite pass rusher next season. But without a good pass rusher coming off the right edge, it makes it easier for teams to help out on him. (Like the Cardinals did, and many other teams.) Kampman is a proven pass rusher and a very good one. With him in there teams will have to pick their poison, leaving either him or Matthews in a 1-on-1 situation. With the two of them, plus Jenkins and Raji it’ll be hard for teams to decide what their matchups are going to be.

by packallday555 on Jan 28, 2010 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly

I have to agree with you here. Rushing from the left side is different from the right side. By that I mean: The QB rarely ever keeps his attention to the rush from the left side (Clay Matthews, because it’s his blindside. So, at times when Clay can’t get there, the QB feels at ease in the pocket. Now, when you have pressure coming from the right side (Aaron Kampmann, proven pass rusher), then the QB feels the pressure and is forced to throw earlier than he would prefer. Kampmann can help our D get interceptions, while Matthews can help force fumbles. You need a pass rusher on both sides. This makes the D more unpredictable. Kampmann was coming around before he tore his ACL. Therefore, I’m up for giving him another shot. There is nobody else that can replace him. Brad Jones shows potential, but he’s not there yet. You can’t rely on him to apply pressure the way Kampmann is capable of doing.

On passing downs, Kampmann had his hands in the dirt rushing the QB, while Matthews blitzed from the blindside. That is what helped our D stop opposing offenses.

All this is based on facing a right handed QB, which most QB’s are right handed.

Go Pack!

by Jabooty on Jan 28, 2010 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

I am torn on Kampman. If we are paying elite DE money to keep him (which is what he is) I fear we are wasting our money. I don’t know if he’ll ever excel in this position. I would however like to see how he’d play with another off season in the system.

I wonder if the money wouldn’t be better spent luring an already proven OLB from a 3-4 system. By letting Kampman go we’d get a VERY high compensatory pick in the draft and we’d free up that money to pursue someone experienced. Its not an easy call…I love Kampman, he’s a packer to the core but sometimes you have to put the team ahead of the player…right?!?! ;-)

by TrevorR on Jan 28, 2010 2:57 PM CST up reply actions

I know what your saying! I just don’t know what other proven 3-4 OLB is out there that we could get. Merriman? Maybe, but how good is he really? Since he stopped taking whatever performance he was taking and his injury he’s just been pretty average. Maybe if we could get a high 2nd round pick it would be worth trading him. That way if Hughes drops we could take him or the Michigan guys name (for the life of me I can’t remember.)

I think he may be willing to sign for a bit less because he is coming off an injury, and because it seems like he actually does want to stay in GB.

by packallday555 on Jan 28, 2010 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

espn has a rumor about Merriman and the Packers…I am not a paid member so I can’t see the details but I thought it was interesting to see that headline.

by TrevorR on Jan 28, 2010 7:21 PM CST up reply actions

Wow, that’s interesting. Of course that doesn’t meany anything will come of it but it does probably mean that there has been contact between the two parties or that somebody within our organization expressed that we may be interested. At least I would assume because I doubt ESPN would completely fabricate something. I really think Ted is going to make some moves this offseason.

Have you read the article where Greg Bedard is interviewing Ted? He asks him some interesting questions but not surprisingly Ted doesn’t give him much.

If someone has an ESPN membership maybe they could fill all of us who don’t have one in on what the story says?

I am thinking 11-12 wins out of that schedule.

Wins: Lions (2), Bears (2), Bills, 49ers, Redskins, Vikings, Dolphins, Giants and
2 of Jets, Pats, Falcons

Losses: At Min, Dal, Eagles, 1 of Jets, Pats, Falcons

My feeling is that several of the teams on the schedule are declining teams (Giants, Pats, Vikings, Bears) which means they are posed to take a step back. I have never been a fan of the Dolphins or the Falcons either and wouldn’t be suprised if they end up winning both of those games.

by Dogg Pound on Jan 28, 2010 12:13 PM CST reply actions

The Phins look to be on the way up

They have a good running game and a young QB that is starting to mature. They lacked consistency this year but were a very dangerous team, certainly one on the rise.

by Danwood on Jan 28, 2010 12:50 PM CST up reply actions

This is exactly my prediction.

If I had to guess at those toss-ups in your prediction, I would guess at wins against New England and Atlanta, with a loss against the Jets.

Dallas is my big toss-up. That game could go either way.

12-4 or 11-5

A lot can and will happen this offseason, and midseason injuries and other factors could completely upset the apple cart, of course.

Among those matchups, I see 1 loss at home and 3-4 losses on the road. One of those losses will probably be of the unexpected/trap game variety.

Expect some slippage on the defensive side. Assume about the same performance on offense. Would be nice if we had some significant improvement on special teams, but I’m not holding my breath.

by swilldog on Jan 28, 2010 12:31 PM CST reply actions

This is a tough schedule..

Dan you are right the fins could be a good team.
I don’t know that 2 wins over the bears is a lock.
I still think, however, they have a good chance of finishing with 10 or 11 wins one of those being a convincing win over the J-E-T-S.
We’ll see but a tough schedule no doubt.

by Packerfan045 on Jan 28, 2010 1:01 PM CST reply actions

I agree. I predict a split with Chicago

They will be much improved from this year. Urlacher back and Cutler with a year of chemistry with the receivers (the young guys looked to have potential. Knox etc.) and Forte evidently played injured for most of the year. I think they will be the NFC north competition next year. Here’s where I net out on a really tough schedule.

W:
Bills
Bears at home
Lions x2
Vikings at home
49ers
Skins
Dolphins
Jets
Pats
Eagles

L:
Giants
Cowboys
Falcons
Bears on the Road
Vikes on the Road

11-5. NFC north Champs. Bears 10-6. Vikes 9-7. Lions 6-10.

10-6. Undefeated at Home, trouble on the Road

Home:

Chicago Bears- W

Minnesota Vikings- W
New York Giants- W
San Francisco 49ers- W

Away:
Atlanta Falcons- L
Chicago Bears- L

I think and hope so too, but our road schedule does look pretty tough.

by packallday555 on Jan 28, 2010 2:41 PM CST up reply actions

I sure hope they do better than 2-6 on the road

but that is my thought when looking at the schedule. I was wishy washing on Atlanta and Miami, but Atlanta was banged up this year, plus they’ll be at home against us, so Atlanta gets the nod here. We never beat Philly, struggle against the Jets, and play @ NE, which makes me nervous. NE is nearly invincible at Foxboro, so it seems. As for our division, well, it’s a toss up. So, I put us as the victors at home, and losers on the road.

Go Pack!

by Jabooty on Jan 28, 2010 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

Some questions that makes it tough to decide:

- McNabb…is he still there or is Kolb the new sheriff?
- Can Ryan take that next step as a QB, he seemed to regress this year
- Were the Jets for real? They may lose 3 of their 5 DBs and who knows what happens with Jones…also how does Washington rebound from a brutal injury.
- Are the Patriots on their way down? Can they keep their core together or will the cap continue to devour this group
- The Dolphins seem to be coming around strong…will Ronnie be back? New QB? Will Ricky be back?

These are the kinds of questions that really make it tough to say right now…

by TrevorR on Jan 28, 2010 3:00 PM CST up reply actions

I see absolutely no reason why we can sweep this schedule

if we fix the line and play the way we did the last 8 games of the year

really dont get why you guys are so pessimistic, I honestly think we are the best team on that list (possible mild homerism…)

We definitely could be. With the emergence of Finley, our offense could be just as explosive as any other one in the league. We just need the defense to step up now!

12-4

8-0 at home, 4-4 on road.

On the road in a dome almost feels like a home game because we are built for a dome. Maybe not Minnesota, but I think we win at Atlanta. Chicago sucks (win), Washington (win), and obviously at Detroit (win). If Favre retires, I think we’ll also win at the Vikes and we definitely have a chance at the Jets or Eagles.
I’m sticking with 12-4 because I can see us slipping up once at home and stealing another game on the road.
I’m basing this purely on the fact that 6 of our 7 draft picks are O Line and D Back.
Taylor Mays in the 1st (might slip that far)
Best O linemen available in the 2nd
Darrell Stuckey in the 3rd
Best O linemen in the 4th and 5th
Best CB in the 6th
Best Kicker in the 7th, Crosby pisses me off

by Matty486 on Jan 28, 2010 5:43 PM CST reply actions

Taylor Mays?

Just another liability in coverage, a la Jarret Bush? I would freak if we drafted him.
For the draft I would like to see us trade Kampman (for a 2nd rounder? I wish a 1st rounder), then draft either a new LT or Jerry Hughes. I wouldn’t even be disappointed if we took a corner or even a RB like Spiller or Best.
Could you imagine our offense with a back like Spiller or Best? Then either of them could return kicks for us too.

Home:
Buffalo Bills – W (why we win?.. it’s the Bills)
Chicago Bears – W (Chicago doesn’t have the D to stop us anymore)
Dallas Cowboys – W (close game, but I think Rodgers would shred Dallas’ D again)
Detroit Lions – W (one words, Lions)
Miami Dolphins – W (Miami is a team on the rise, but their D is getting old)
Minnesota Vikings – W (we will get revenge on the Vikings at home)
New York Giants – W ( I don’t see the Giants’ D playing well against us, will be a close game)
San Francisco 49ers – W (offense is weak due to their QB play)

Away:
Atlanta Falcons – L (I fell that we could easily beat them anyday, but I feel we slip up)
Chicago Bears – W (same as above)
Detroit Lions – W (same as above)
Minnesota Vikings – L (I wish we’d beat them twice, but division games are usually close)
New England Patriots – W (tough game, but NE’s D is very vunerable)
New York Jets – L (I feel the Jets might cause many turnovers..but the Jets offense is one sided)
Philadelphia Eagles – W/L??? (I am up in the air on this one…depends who is the starting QB for the Eagles)
Washington Redskins – W (not a good offensive team, Skins’ D is getting better)

Taylor Mays = Aaron Rouse

I really hope I hear good things about Mays over the next couple months, but right now I’m afraid he’s the next Rouse. Both players had great junior years, disappointing senior years, slipped in the draft, and now there are questions about their coverage skills.

9-7/10-6

That could still get a playoff spot, as all of the NFC North teams will be playing the AFC East. I can’t see getting swept by Minnesota again. But this is going to be a tougher schedule, and we certainly benefited from a very easy one this year. If the pass rush doesn’t improve, and we don’t get more help in the secondary, Brady and McNabb could really burn us.

by MikeDB on Jan 29, 2010 4:07 PM CST reply actions

The good news is that we’ll have one more season in this defense under our belts and hopefully a few more key players built for the 3-4. Its going to be tougher wins but hopefully we can replicate the win totals from the previous year.

by TrevorR on Jan 29, 2010 9:29 PM CST up reply actions

12-4

Really depends on how things shake out on draft day and free agency.
 8-0 at home
4-4 on the road. Would have to steal one on the road to do better.
The way we played from behind against the cards showed this team has some grit.

11-5

And hopefully VERY deep in the playoffs. I am torn on Kampman, but as a homer I will say he brings the team sack total up another 8 or 9 sacks which greatly assists the Pack in this tougher schedule.
