3 Best Draft Senarios
Option 1:
C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson
Spiller is a dynamic back who can do a multitude of things. He can run between the tackles, catch the ball out of the backfield and return kicks. Adding him to our backfield might be the missing link to an offense with NFC title aspirations. If Spiller is still around at No. 23 the Packers would have to take him. Spiller and Grant would compliment each other very well. He may need to work on pass protection, but I believe that will come in time.
Option 2:
Taylor Mays, SS, USC
Mays is a freak of an athlete who would have been a top-5 pick if he would have left school early. He struggles in coverage, but so does Atari Bigby! The upgrade over Bigby would be enormous. Having Mays and Collins patrolling the secondary for the next 10 years could be something special. Mays has the potential to turn into a defensive game changer against the run and roaming the middle of the field (a Polamalu or Sanders type). Rumor has it he is struggling at the Senior Bowl, but you can't challenge his natural ability.
Option 3:
Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
The offensive line is by far the Packers greatest need. The two above options would be luxury items. Bulaga is a big tackle who is hard working. He missed three games in 2009, but not due to injury, he was extremely ill. He might not be as strong as some tackles, but still has room to improve that area. If the Packers bring back Clifton or Tauscher back he wouldn't be pressed into immediate duty, being he is only a junior.
This is just my opinion, get the debate started!!

I like all the players but I don’t really think we need Spiller. Grant is good when the o-line is somewhat decent. I would rather we just draft a faster back in the later rounds of the draft to come in on 3rd downs (maybe Joe McKnight).
I’ve read Mays is struggling a bit at the Senior Bowl as well but like you said he has freakish athletic ability and is a huge hitter. Having him roaming the middle of the field (pretty much having another LB with S speed) could be huge for the run defense. Another thing is Bigby usually played closer to the line of scrimmage in our scheme while Collins kind of played center field so to speak, so I think Mays would work out with us.
Buluga is the player I want us to draft most at 23. He was a top 15 prospect after his junior year and opted to come back for his senior year. He got injured early but continued to improve as the year went on and by the end of the year was looking like an elite LT. (Game against Georgia Tech and Morgan) He would be good in protection but what really excites me is he is a great run blocker. Clifton and Tauscher have been great pass blocking for us in the past but both have lost their ability to explode off the line, which is needed for run blocking. Having Buluga, Sitton, Lang, and Spitz (who has been our best run blocker the last two years.) on the o-line could open up some holes for Grant, which in return would make our passing offense that much more dangerous.
Mays is a reach
I think you can stay away from Mays as a first rounder and address a need like CB in Patrick Robinson, who I’ve heard is one of the fastest most fluid guys at the Senior Bowl. Also you could address the need for another dynamic OLB to pass opposite Clay, there are plenty of guys like Kindle, Sapp, Pierre-Paul who could help relieve pressure off the secondary by getting in the QB’s face. OT is a sensible move there are only a few guys I’d advocate going for in the first round, there just isn’t a Oher out there and with the mentality of the draft most premier Tackles I feel will be gone by pick 23, Bulaga is rising on most draft boards I’ve seen. If you want to address the Safety situation, go for Myron Rolle who is a fantastic athlete, will have the highest Wonderlic test, and while he doesn’t always make the highlight play, doesn’t blow assignments.
Good point. I forgot about Rolle, who before taking a year off to become a Rhodes Scholar was being projected as a high 1st round pick.

I don't want Mays, I suspect he'll be a huge bust
1. CJ Spiller
2. A true LT
3. CB
In all fairness, we only need one offensive lineman, a LT. Move Allyn Barbre to LG, Jason Spitz @ C, Josh Sitton@ RG, TJ Lang @ RT.
"No player is greater than a team."
-Vince Lombardi
Yeah, we can probably manage with just taking a LT. I think the coaches indeed are going to move Barbre to LG, as he is listed on pretty much every website as a OG now.

Dont rule out Tauscher coming back for another year and Lang starting at LG. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Clifton came back for 1 more year as a stopgap until a rookie is ready to start.
I do like the Spiller idea. It is kinda similar to the Vikes taking Harvin last year. They didnt really need him but he adds so much to the offense and ST that they couldnt pass him up.
My preference for our #1
1. Spiller
2. Bulaga
3. Jason Pierre-Paul
4. Mike Iupati

I think Clifton and Tauscher will both be back and Lang will surely be a starter next season. Tauscher may actually have a bit more in him then some would think. He actually looked pretty good this season and his knee will likely only feel better next year.
It’s obvious Clifton has begun to decline but he can still protect Rodger’s blindside so I’m sure he’ll be brought back as a stopgap until a younger guy comes in. (Hopefully Buluga.)

Why do you say that? I believe he’s under contract still and I would think that they’ll at least go through training camp with him having a shot at OG. Even if Barbre doesn’t work out at LG, we would still be ok with only getting a LT. I think the chances of Wells being our starting C next year are good. He played pretty well in his time starting and with Colledge playing pretty poorly this season I could see us sticking Spitz back at LG, which is where he has played in the past.

Greatest Need Verses Best Player Available...
I think we can all say without a shadow of a doubt… OUR GREATEST NEED IS LEFT TACKLE… We can also assume that TT ALWAYS TAKES THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE…
I was SO MAD when TT drafted Justin Harrell… Especially since he was hurt most of his Sr Year… I may be wrong… but, I DON’T think JH will ever play a meaningful down… I think TT peed in his Peyton Manning Promoted Wheaties… That being said…
I was also VERY mad when TT drafted Aaron Rodgers… Especially in the 1st round when We had Brent F… and I thought we needed so many other holes filled… I was soooo very wrong on that one..!!!! (OK… 1 for TT : )
Yet again I was so very MAD @ TT when he drafted both Brian Brohm & the kid out of LSU… 2 QB’s really? What a waste of a 2nd round (?) pick… We didn’t get anything for BB did we? Wasn’’t he sign by the Bills off our practice squad?
Then… After watching a million hours of the combine last year… I told my beautiful wife… “God ~ I hope TT is watching and goes after that Clay Matthews kid…!!!!” Low and behold… My prayers were answered… TT went back up into the 1st Round and got someone I actually wanted him to TAKE! (2 for TT : )
I know… I’m ranting… I have so many scenarios running around in my head I about to explode… I do know we need a LT… I Do KNOW WE NEED CB’s (Plural!) We need a kick butt OLB… and We need a Top Notch RB to help Ryan Grant! I love RG… I can’t see why some people are down on him… I KNOW WE DON’T NEED 3 FB’s!!!!
Let’s Get Our LT in the 1st Round if he’s available!!!! Or… I would LOVE to get OLB Brandon Graham @ 23 if he’s still there… I don’t think we can afford to Trade out of the 1st Round this year… and I really think if TT is on his game like he was last year… We might jump back up into the 1st Round and get either a wicked CB or RB…
Jarrett Bush… Cut him… AJ HAWK… TRADE HIM FOR PICK… Aaron Kampman… I love him… but, I think we could trade him and a 4th to move back into the 1st round to pick up a player we need… OLB, ILB, RB, another CB…
I’m sure MM, and TT will have a plan… I just pray it’s a good 1!!!!! : O
Can’t wait for the COMBINE… Will be back to help debate… Sorry for my ranting!
GO PACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i agree with what ur saying for the players we have
except Hawk. i think he could still be useful. i agree Bush deserves to go because he sucks and Kampman has to be traded because he doesnt fit into the 3-4.
the only problem with trading guys like that is that is that you create more needs for urself and more question marks moving forward. who am i to talk though? i do that stuff on Madden all the time. haha
Haha no worries about the ranting, I find myself doing it all the time when thinking about the Packers!
After watching the Senior Bowl, I think I’m hoping most that we get Buluga at 23 but if he isn’t available, then Graham out of Michigan. Of course this will depend on what plays out with Kampman. If we re-sign him I doubt we spend a first round pick on an OLB.
If TT decides he wants to part ways with Kampman, thinking about trading he and Hawk together could possibly be a good move. I think we could get a 1st rounder and maybe a 4th or 5th for the two of them. I did a little researching and think a team that would be willing to do this is the Tennessee Titans, who will have either the 16th or 17th pick.
Losing Haynesworth hurt them on the d-line, and when Kearse had an injury plagued season that certainly didn’t help things either. Vanden Bosch was great for them coming off the edge but he didn’t have any help from the other DE spend, or the DT’s. Obviously Kampman is a proven 4-3 DE, and an elite one at that. I know he is coming off of an ACL tear but I don’t think it will greatly decline his play. He isn’t an elite pass rusher because he has superior athleticsim, but rather because he does all the little things great and is fundamentally sound.
The next big void on their defense is in their LB corps. Their starting LB’s this year were Bulluck, Tulloch, and Allred. Bulluck is great but had an ACL tear late into the season, and is 32+ years old. I have never even heard of Allred, but in looking at his yahoo profile it appears he is relatively average and only plays when he is needed. (19 tackles in 12 games this year.)
I think Kampman and Hawk could really help improve that defense immediately, and if their defense improves they could become legitimate contenders with Chris Johnson and Kenny Britt’s emergence this year (especially Chris Johnson.) And obviously, the 16th or 17th pick could help us address our two biggest needs (OT and CB) or it could allow for us to make one pick in the 1st round more based off of need and one based off of the best guy out there.
Kind of a crazy situation but I’m bored haha!

I hated the Harrell pick too…actually I barely knew anything about him and he wasn’t even on my radar. I had a hunch it wouldn’t pan out but I’ve been wrong plenty of times (this time I was right).
I was bummed on the rodgers pick too…not because we had Favre because I thought it was time for us to start looking toward the future, but because I hated Rodgers coming into the draft. I thought for sure he was Kyle Boller 2.0. I was very wrong and I’ll gladly eat my crow on that one!
As a Packers fan second,
I was thrilled with the Rodgers pick. I personally though he was much better than Alex Smith and should’ve gone #1 overall. I hated seeing him sit in that room all day and slide down the draft boards, all the while his dignity and salary taking a hit with each passing selection.
Then it was nearly the Packers turn, and I started hoping. When they chose him I called a couple of friends immediately all pumped up about it. I never imagined entering the draft that year that the player ranked #1 on my draft board would slide all the way to the Packers at 24. It was the dream scenario in my mind. Then again, I was expecting Favre to retire a season later, maybe two at the most. I never saw the drama coming nor the fall from grace (in my mind) of one of my former favorite players.
Anyhow, I loved the Rodgers selection and began immediately believing that the Packers would continue their long stretch of dominance at the QB position. I’ve been a Rodgers fan ever since that long and brutal draft day. Then, I became an even bigger fan almost two years ago as I watched him deal with the drama and the haters. I am looking forward to his years of success in GB!

I felt TERRIBLE for him too. Actually once it got closer I came to grips with the fact that he was coming here and was at peace with it. I was hopeful he’d turn out good but I didn’t expect it. I couldn’t be happier to have been wrong that day. I bet there are about 20 or so teams that regret letting him slide past them with the first on the list being San Fran.
Those 20 or so teams..
No doubt they must regret it. And Aaron had indicated he wanted to stay in California and help build the 49ers. They must be kicking themselves. I’m sure that Rodgers is glad with how it worked out now, as he is in a spot to lead a dominant team for the next many years.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isnt Kampman a free agent now. I think part of his issue with moving to LB was that it was a contract year this year. You cant trade what you dont have a contract on. They surely wont Franchise him and pay him 10+ mil to rehab for a year before he goes somewhere else.

by juggernaut400 on Feb 1, 2010 3:47 PM CST up reply actions
I wouldn’t say surely…its very much possible that they might. They have plenty of room under the cap to do it too.
Yeah, I actually tend to think they would franchise him and trade if they don’t want him back. I just don’t see TT letting Kampman walk away for nothing when we could probably get a 2nd round pick for him.
by packallday555 on Feb 1, 2010 6:55 PM CST up reply actions
…though we’d probably get a second as a compensatory pick too so it would have to be a good second to make that all worth it!
Oh that’s true I suppose! For some reason I didn’t think of that.

Mays sounds like a bust
“Struggles in coverage, struggles in Senior Bowl – but he’s athletic” don’t cut it in the NFL. Bigby ain’t that bad that you pick a first rounder to replace him.
I agree about Bulaga. That’s our top priority this draft. But I’m sure TT and the scouting team took and will take a good look at every possible OT out there and I’ve got a good feeling about what’s going to happen.
The Dude abides
The scouting reports for Mays sound just like the ones for Aaron Rouse a couple years ago

Mays May B A BUST... BUT:
What I don’t want to have happen is: We get a CB that’s 5’ 8" who can’t cover and is slow… Which it seems we have plenty of… LOL… If we get a kick butt OLB opposite Matthews… That will certainly help our secondary!! Mays may have struggled in the Senior Bowl… That doesn’t mean he can’t be coached up… I’m more concerned with his work ethic & character… I think having Matthews in GB would help him settle and Clay would sit on him… Since Clay is out of USC… I’m sure he wouldn’t put up with Mays messing up… Having him roaming as FS or SS with his Skill set would be wicked… Still…. WE NEED CB’S…
Woodson is a monster in the 3 – 4… I hope he can make it a couple more years… That being said… Harris is coming of injury… and not sure how much he’s got left!?!? Pat Lee… ? I would love to see us get an above average CB in Free Agency… Pipe Dream? Hope not… Then pick up a 3rd round CB and a 5th round CB for depth!! Sound silly? Sorry Gotta run… be back!! OT 1st though… Gotta protect AROD!!!! :)
PEACE OUT!! LOL
who I want to draft..
1st – CJ Spiller – Sure we have Ryan Grant but CJ would return kicks also and be a great pass-catching asset. His speed and vision is what makes him so dynamic. I was down on Percy Harvin last year and look what he did with the Vikings and same with the Titans “reaching” to take Chris Johnson (even though he is not 4.2 speed).
or I’d be happy with any LT worthy of a 1st round pick. Since we have a lower pick even Ghee (Wake Forest) would be a great pick but then the 2nd round would be a LT.
So the scenario goes (in my mind) if we take Spiller in the 1st, we go:
2nd- LT, 3rd- CB and the rest goes probably a G then pieces to our D.
I just couldn’t imagine our offense if we had Spiller/Grant along with Jennings, Driver, Finley. But I wouldn’t be upset if we go with a LT in the 1st. But I’d hope we get a top-notch FA to help out our team more.
Eh, ya he was ok but not the speed Rb that could make our offense much more dangerous.

brandon jackson is a bust!
brandon jackson is a major bust. always hurt and seems to have no burst of speed needed for the break away. justin harrel has to be history. he is tt’s bigest draft day bust. pull an nba style sign and trade with kampman and add hawk to a 1st and 4th round draft pick deal. take spiller or bulaga with our two 1st round picks. we can then sign our defenceive free agents (maybe add a d-free agent from else where too). i’ll really be pissed off if tt keeps colledge. he couldn’t block my dead grandmother. GO Pack in 2010.
Packers 2010 record will be 12-4 and we win the division title again if tt makes a couple of GOOD moves.
cpocraig
I dont really agree with Brandon Jackson being a bust yet, because we he does get touches he does a lot of good things. He just hasnt gotten the necessary touches in our offense, granted some of that is due to injury.
I believe you are exactly right when you say the Pack will win the division IF Ted makes some moves. I think we have a chance to make multiple Super Bowl runs in the next 10 years. We are a big-time a big-time free agent or two away from getting over that hump. My only concern is that TT will not pull the trigger when he has the opportunity. He has done a nice job of building through the draft, the groundwork has been laid. Now at some point you have to realize its time to WIN NOW. We need proven guys that can step in and fill crucial roles.
I just hope Ted gets out of his own way and can bring the Lombardi Trophy back to Green Bay!
Yeah good points. He has built a good foundation through the draft. Now it’s time to make some moves because if we address our o-line and secondary, we could very well be a SB contender for the next 5-10 years like you mentioned.

my take..
Would not include CJ or any other RB in the first round. Grant is a solid back, he is one of the most underrated RBs out there. He does start the season off slow but that is what we have an explosive passing game for. But to have that explosive passing game Rodgers needs some time so we should be going LT in the first round. The OT’s in the draft seem to be limited so I think we have to make the move in the first to get one. Bulaga would be a great so would Anthony Davis from Rutgers or even Bruce Campbell from Maryland. I just hope one of these guys drops down to us.
I think the more interesting draft choice is the 2nd round. I think we have to trade up in this round. We need a CB that can make an impact right away. Guys like Patrick Robinson from FSU, Donovan Warren from MICH, Perish Cox OKST are probably all early 2nd rounders. If we dont trade up some of the few may drop but otherwise we would be stuck reaching with guys like Javier Arenas who does have an upside of being a KR/PR or otherslike Myron Lewis from Vandy or Ghee from Wake
I like your take on things. There are some good LT’s in this years draft, but only like 4-5 of them. If one falls to us, I don’t see how TT doesn’t pick one, even if there is a more talented guy on the board. Clifton declined a bit this year and was pretty average for us at his best. To think he’ll be able to hold up all year next year could be silly, and I think Lang’s arms are just short to be a LT. LT is a huge need for us. We saw what it looked like when we didn’t have a RT..Imagine how much worse not having a LT could be? I don’t know about the rest of you but I certainly don’t want to see Rodgers taking hits all game from his blindside.
I think Grant has to be our guy as well. I can’t remember where I saw this, or who was saying, but there was someone who was asked about Grant’s season with us and whoever it was actually said he thought Grant overacheived. At first I was huh? But the more I thought about it, I kind of realized that this is kind of true. The o-line didn’t open up any holes for him in the beginning of the year, and he isn’t the type of Rb who is going to be able to make 2-3 guys miss in the backfield. When our blocking started to get better so did Grant, and he actually made a couple of big runs for us. We also should keep in mind that Clifton and Colledge provide virtually nothing when run blocking, and Tauscher doesn’t do a whole lot either. I think getting Spitz back, making Lang a starter at LG or RT, and drafting a LT who has some explosion off the line could do wonders for Grant. Oh and of course, having one of the deadliest passing games would help as well :).
I just really hope TT addresses our weaknesses because we really have the talent to be a really, really good team.

bizzie4 ~ I AGREE WITH YOU!!! :)
All this talk about taking Spiller is killing me too!!!! I pray TT finds a guy in the 6th or 7th that can in 2 years be a monster RB… but, who can spell RG 10 – 15 plays… Would love to see us get Chester Taylor or Kevin Faulk in FA… Not too expensive but, a great 3rd down option to really help Grant out…? We have to remember… Early this year our OL was terrible… Injuries… Allen Barbre just couldn’t hang… Sure Ryan Grant had a slow start… Who wouldn’t behind the line we fielded? We HAVE TO GET A LT FROM SOMEWHERE!!!! (Even if we resign MT, and CC…)
Don’t know how this will all shake out… but, I DO KNOW THE COLTS have 3 undrafted FA starting on their OL… Come on Ted… WORK some MAGIC for us and find a couple of those guys so we don’t have to waste a draft pick!!!! GET TO WORK!! (LOL)
I also know that every year there are numerous busts in the draft… (HARRELL) :) Can’t let that go!!! :)
We have to minimize those through research… (TT, MM) :) Let’s don’t REACH this year… Let’s try to get our FRANCHISE LT in Round 1 if he’s there… IF NOT… I’d say OLB… Either Brandon Graham or that Hughes kid out of TCU… I would be fine with either one! Then trading up in the second to find that CB we need so bad isn’t a bad idea… I really think that Rhodes Scholar kid would be a great choice!!! (WE KNOW HE’s SMART!!) : )
I just don’t want to have one of those WHAT WERE THEY THINKING DRAFTS!!!! My worst fear is we take Spiller and he for some reason doesn’t play a down for us… God Forbid!!!!
LOVE THIS STUFF!!!!
GO PACK!!!!!
