Clay Matthews Is The Third Best Rookie

So says the AP. While LB Clay Matthews of the Green Bay Packers is the 3rd best rookie, Texans's LB Brian Cushing is the best. I'm not a big fan of No. 2 on that list because the value of S Jairus Byrd might be inflated by some gaudy INT numbers that he won't sustain going forward in his career. But I'll give it to Cushing over Matthews. The Packers have the better pass rusher, but Cushing is a complete LB who can tackle (134 total), rush the QB (5 sacks), and is very good in pass coverage (4 INTs, 10 pass defenses). Those are outstanding numbers and picking Cushing over Matthews is no knock on Matthews.

Could you imagine

Being the D Coordinator at USC, where your 3 linebackers are Clay Matthews, Brian Cushing, and Rey Maualuga?

How did opponents ever score? It’s practically cheating.

A lot of “ballhawks” interception numbers go down becase teams stop throwing anywhere near them. Night Train Lane is a perfect example. He set the NFL interception record in his rookie year. Does that make him less of an impact when he can take away a quarter of the field? :-) Besides it’s Defensive ROokie of the Year not “Who WIll Have the Best Career” award.

Good luck. I have you guys going to the NFC Championship game this year. Don’t disappoint.

Byrd had a nice stretch of games in the middle of the season which resulted in him getting those votes. He’s a great CB, hopefully he can keep it up in the future, its a bright one!

He’s a safety for Buffalo. He was too slow to keep at safety.

I have not watched much Texans

…………. Is Cushing a middle or inside LB??

I believe he’s the strong side OLB in a 4-3 system. Not positive though, he could be the weak side OLB too.

Because that

would explain the tackle numbers disparity.

Mathews has it

I agree with Cush being named ROY. He played as a starter all year. Mathews did not. I believe both these guys have bright futures, but more game changing moments will come from the Clay Mathews.
