Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Joshua Cribbs in Green Bay

I left the question mark off for shock value.  The title should be a question, because I have no information to support the statement.  It was a passing thought as I read a headline claiming that Joshua Cribbs was on the way out in Cleveland.

Star-divide

We've been discussing all season how poorly our return game has been performing and what steps we (the armchair GM's of APC) would like to see Ted make this offseason and draft.  I would definatly support a free agent aquisition like Cribbs.  The only problem I see is the small market-big ego conflict.  If Cribbs is looking for a big market team, he might be hard to sign.  If Cribbs is looking for a high powered offense with a young quarterback, he might be interested in Green Bay.  If Cribbs is looking for a team with high levels of talent at the WR position, he might be interested.  The team has enough cap room (especially if the players union and league cannot figure out that situation) to pull in a couple free agents if they fit the bill.  We are in need of a return guy, and a dynamic player like Cribbs would be a great addition to the team.

What do you think?

It won't happen, but I could only dream.....

Special teams would be huge. Then count in all the offensive formations we could get creative with. He would be a nightmare for the rest of NFC north.

It all comes down to price

I’ve seen speculation that Cleveland could go the route AZ did with Boldin where they will want 2 high draft picks for him. I don’t know if we’d get enough out of him with our offense. Not sure if McCarthy would be inventive enough to use him in the offense to his full ability. It would be fun to have a guy as dangerous out there as him but I just think the price is going to be too high.

by TrevorR on Jan 8, 2010 11:58 PM CST reply actions

Your right about MM not being creative enough to use him haha. But yeah, I think he will be asking for way too much $. It would be awesome to have a guy like that though.

He wants more money...

…but he might be raising hell about the team. Think about it, he’s in Cleaveland. He doesn’t want to play in that offense. I bet our offense is more appealing to a player like Cribbs.

by StephanL on Jan 9, 2010 2:22 PM CST up reply actions

it won’t be at all in his control though, so it won’t matter what’s appealing to him! haha

by TrevorR on Jan 9, 2010 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

from what i read

he he is a very hard worker, great attitude, etc.

did everything right for the team.

by Acme on Jan 9, 2010 12:40 AM CST reply actions

I agree…he even played his cards right all season. There is NO reason for them to not reward the kid. If they lose him, they have NOTHING!

With Deion Sanders

and every pizza guy in Cleveland asking for Cribbs to get a raise, I doubt TT will want to “pay da man” what da man really wants

I don't like the idea of spending

on a return guy. Cribbs is a beast but Return men have a short height f their powers. I think Nelson can do just fine after a couple years.

by levnclf on Jan 9, 2010 9:18 AM CST reply actions

He's too big.

And too valuable. He’s scrappy, but lacks explosive speed and vison.

by StephanL on Jan 9, 2010 2:12 PM CST up reply actions

Jordy is NOT the guy we want as a long term option as a returner. We want him as a stud receiver.

by TrevorR on Jan 9, 2010 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

He’s under contract with CLE for three more years, so they will want a high draft pick or two, and then we’d have to pay him a lot of money. It seems like kick returners usually have a couple of great years and then tail off soon after.

by ACDC84 on Jan 9, 2010 8:27 PM CST up reply actions

We've spent money on a return guy before...

His name was Desmond Howard. Superbowl MVP is worth it. He doesn’t need to be a big time receiver to justify his paycheck…

by soliman on Jan 10, 2010 11:15 AM CST up reply actions

Howard was a FA…we didn’t trade two high draft picks to get him though…that is the difference.

by TrevorR on Jan 10, 2010 11:43 AM CST up reply actions

still feel that way?

He’s a pretty awful kick returner.

by shaftr on Jan 10, 2010 5:40 PM CST up reply actions

Eh

Kick returns were the least of our worries..

by packallday555 on Jan 10, 2010 10:29 PM CST up reply actions

I agree…Tramon looked better, where has HE been all year. At least I felt like he was going to do something besides running straight ahead.

We can find someone better than Jordy at this in the third, fourth rounds without spending TWO high draft picks though. Plus Cribbs will start to diminish here at returns, their life expectancy isn’t THAT long and then he’ll be almost worthless (a la Donte Hall)

by TrevorR on Jan 11, 2010 12:52 PM CST up reply actions

Couldn’t afford to risk injury with Tramon. Its bad enough that Bush was the nickel guy, imagine if he was the starter?

"I agree but dont agree"

by juggernaut400 on Jan 12, 2010 1:25 PM CST up reply actions

haha yeah I suppose…though Welker returns them for the Patriots. Its not out of the question to have an important player returning kicks. Now with punts, that is another story!

by TrevorR on Jan 12, 2010 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

It could be nice

But I rather find a player in the draft that can also play a position well (CB for example). And don’t forget about Blackmon, he had two punt TDs in 2008.

The Dude abides

by SlowJoe445 on Jan 9, 2010 9:50 AM CST reply actions

You wouldn't want Cribbs...

… as a slot reciever. It would be possible to run trips with Finley, Driver, and Cribbs. Imagine the great perimeter blocking paired with explosiveness. haha. I’m a dreamer.

by StephanL on Jan 9, 2010 2:14 PM CST up reply actions

I think his best value would be almost out of the backfield in a wildcat type of role.

by TrevorR on Jan 9, 2010 8:01 PM CST up reply actions

This could be a good idea.

DD is unfortunately getting towards the end of his career, Cribbs could give us some depth on WR which is quality and he is a great return man.

by tkiller314 on Jan 9, 2010 10:11 AM CST reply actions

couple options

the browns need players, we have good depth. could do any combo of nelson/jones/kampman/hawk for him. he’d be great as 3rd wide/wildcat/returner guy for us. would really offset the lack of explosive plays from the backs, means we could keep grant and let him to his thing instead of drafting a back.

if there are no really good OT’s available at our draft spot I’d also trade that for him, assuming we could work out a reasonable deal with him. in cle he is scheduled to make less than a mil, and the browns offered to up it to 1.7 or something pathetic like that. I’d pay him 4-5 for three years no hesitation.

by gangstaff on Jan 9, 2010 11:03 AM CST reply actions

They play a 3-4, so Kampman won’t go there. The organization will be kind to him, if they tag him, he’ll go to a 4-3.

I’d pay him 4-5 for three years no hesitation.

I agree to an extent. These players deserve high contracts. He would be working special teams and offense, which would include runing plays. Cribbs and players similar to him are very likely to sustain injuries. I believe in a high salary, low guarentee contracts. It’s not going to happen that easily: I understand. But, if we could strike a deal like that, we’d be set.

by StephanL on Jan 9, 2010 2:20 PM CST reply actions

Cribbs

He’s a talented player and a big play weapon so that makes him a great addition. My two reservations are, first, all his public fighting with the Browns: Is that just because the Browns are inept or is he going to disrupt the team? And second, there is just so much wrong on special teams that Cribbs alone isn’t going to make the kick returns or punt returns better, he can’t make any impact on returns if the blocking is bad or they commit penalties on returns.

by Brandon on Jan 9, 2010 3:27 PM CST reply actions

I don’t think his public fighting a big deal. He was a model citizen all season. Then they came with a completely CRAP offer so he raised some hell. I don’t blame him. That offer sucked, he’s their entire offense!!

by TrevorR on Jan 9, 2010 8:03 PM CST up reply actions

Brandon Chillar

got a better offer

I was thinking the same

Our special teams need more than one player to make a change happen. No point dropping big money on a returner when the rest of the return team are as hopeless as they are currently.

by forkboy on Jan 10, 2010 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

Our issues with Special Teams is coverage, not returners

I still like Will Blackman and he will be a lot less expensive than what Cribbs would demand. I am not willing to make the same mistake as Chicago in overpaying a kick returner.

Go Pack!

by Jabooty on Jan 10, 2010 10:47 PM CST reply actions

You might be right about Blackmon

But I doubt he’s in anyone’s plans right now. He just can’t stay healthy.

by Weldon on Jan 13, 2010 10:28 AM CST up reply actions

I think Darren Sproles is a FA this year

wouldn’t that be sweet. A fast RB, A fast KR/PR. I think you get your moneys worth with that guy.

by GBfan73 on Jan 13, 2010 9:32 PM CST reply actions

That is a much better idea than Cribbs…BUT I don’t know if SD will let him go. LT is also a FA this year so they could lose both of their running backs. Last year they franchised Sproles so I know they like him a lot but he’s not a FT back I dont’ think so I can’t see him being the only answer in SD so maybe he’s allowed to move on…

by TrevorR on Jan 14, 2010 10:37 AM CST up reply actions

I don’t think there is anyway they let Sproles go.

by packallday555 on Jan 14, 2010 11:51 AM CST up reply actions

Well

IDK, I could only hope :) I mean, it’s not like the guy is big enough to be an every down RB for SD. And after this year, they might need to keep other talent on their team. I’m not an expert, but a guy can dream right?

by GBfan73 on Jan 15, 2010 12:04 AM CST up reply actions

Haha yes, you certainly can dream! This is probably a good point but SD has continually started to use him more and more, and with LT getting up there in years and declining in play it seems likely they’ll keep Sproles. We should still dream though :).

by packallday555 on Jan 15, 2010 10:19 AM CST up reply actions

I think we’ll havea better chance of signing LT than Sproles this offseason!

by TrevorR on Jan 15, 2010 3:03 PM CST up reply actions

Was gonna say the same but I wouldn’t want him.
