Frank Zombo Fined $7,500 For Hit On Cutler

His illegal helmet-to-helment hit on QB Jay Cutler will be costing LB Frank Zombo $7,500. From NFL.com:

As for the fine, he said, "It's going to hurt."

Zombo is an undrafted rookie making $320,000 this season.

Mike McCarthy said it was a "grey area" but the league unsurprisingly fined him anyway.

I don't agree with this at all

It was clearly unintentional. Rules are rules though, but this is just a silly fine. If Zombo keeps playing the way he is now all season, he’ll likely get a new contract after this season anyways.

I think the league needs to start taking intent into the equation

You can tell when a guy is intending to go after someone’s head. When the player about to get hit moves INTO the hitter already in action, they shouldn’t penalize the person in action. Its just logic.

You can sort of tell why Zombo made my LVP list for last game...

The league didn’t have to add insult to THAT injury…

So, who are you going to hire to look into the players’ hearts to find out their “intent”?

“Mr. Goodell, having conducted my investigation of the player’s motives, I have determined that he was NOT trying to make helmet to helmet contact. In fact, as you can see on this pie graph, his spirit was 85% filled with noble thoughts at that moment.”

RG: “I see. And, what was the other 15%?”

“Why, sex, of course.”

the thing with intent though

Is that these rules are in place to help encourage players to be more careful with accidents too. Next time, Zombo is definetly going to be more aware of hitting cutler lower than the head than he was before, intentional or not

its safety first

If a guy is already in his act and the other guy makes an action to cause the impact to be worse…why isn’t the second player the one penalized? Sure Zombo hit him in the head but he dove while cutler was at point A and then Cutler chose to make a throw causing the helmet to helmet…where is HIS responsibility. What if Zombo was the one who ended up concussed, would he still be fined?

It sounds as if you’re saying the QB has a responsibility to change his actions if there is a chance he could be hit in the head.

Problem is the precedent

If they’re going to fine for this kind of hit, even if it was not intentional, if they make an exception somewhere, other players can start arguing and get their fines dropped.

Considering the amount of coverage concussions are getting, doing too much is better than not enough.

they're not going to make an exception elsewhere

they always fine illegal hits

That's why this makes sense.

With all of the coverage head injuries are getting, they can’t not fine this.

The fine is stupid

But honestly, from a financial perspective it’s hard to feel too sorry for someone who is earning $320,000 to play football for a year.

haha really earn that fine! right?

by TrevorR on Oct 1, 2010 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think so.

Considering the league found out about the incident on Tuesday, and the hit was known on Monday, they may still be investigating that one.

If we don’t hear anything by the end of next week, I’d say it has blown over.

If you have the rule enforce it

I recall a pass over the middle where the Bears safety lead with his helmet into Finley. By rules this is a personal foul. Why wasn’t that called?
