If they run on 2nd, they get to 2 minutes. A run on third, even if they don’t get the first down, let’s them run the clock down to 1 minute to a 1:10. And that’s the worst case scenario. If they had called a sweep on 1st down instead of the dive play and lasted just 3 seconds, they wouldn’t have had to give the ball back to the Vikings until there was about 30 seconds left.

Actually, it’s probably not do or die with the way the NFC is shaping up. The Bears and Falcons are 4-1 and pretty much everybody else is 3-2 or 2-3, so even 1-4 isn’t an inescapable hole this year. 9 wins probably gets you a WC in the NFC this year.

Christopher Gates is something else.
I have a lot of respect for Ted Glover, though. Unlike Gates, he manages to get off his criticisms without flaming the opposing team. I can just picture him saying every comment calmly, word for word, without ever raising his voice. Whereas Gates is just a screamer.

I respect their players. I don’t respect their fans, especially after the Farve incident. You could not have found ninety percent of their current membership three years ago. You just couldn’t.
Part of me wants the Vikings to dump Farve for Scott Tolzien, so they can have a young, pocket passer and they’ll finally take their OL seriously. Their DL is getting up there; Allen vanishes on rushing downs and Pat Williams has about ONE year left in his tank. KWill is good, Kennedy is also in a backup role, and their LB corps is pretty solid. But their fanbase REALLY ticks me off; as I have lived in the pressure zone between Viking and Packer land all my life.

I have lived in the pressure zone between Viking and Packer land all my life, and I have yet to encounter a truly civil Vikings fan in real life since Farve went down.
The guys we get around here (Grime, PurpleJesus, Ted Glover, and lifelongvike) are really good, but the others who shall go nameless are probably the biggest reasons I can no longer support the Vikings. Period.

He changed everything. I didn’t pay attention to him before 2007, even, DD was and still is my favorite Packer. Then Ryan Grant happened (his last name is my first name), I loved him, got his jersey, and then 2007’s gut-wrenching finale came, Favre “retired” and as soon as I saw what he was about I was through with him for good. I have reacted with disgust to just about every play he has made since leaving the Packers. I cannot be a Vikings fan until Favre retires. I might not be a Vikings fan ever again. But I can respect their other personnel. I can’t respect the head coach who kneels over backwards to shamelessly pander to him. I can’t possibly respect the lack of economics that results from giving a 41 year old man a 14 million dollar contract.
I sure as hell cannot respect my cousin who grew up born and raised on the Packers only to ditch them when Farve left town. He sent me a text the other day after the Packers lost in OT telling me, “He’s no Brett Favre.” I responded after the Lowery INT, “If that means Aaron Rodgers doesn’t throw a pick six in a 2 point game, then I am FINE!” Maybe that fuels it.
I might respect the Vikings, but as a whole, I can’t cheer for them. I thought 2008 was a breakthrough for them; they could be successful without solid QB play. Then 2009 happened, the sweep happened, and nothing’s been the same since. And you know what? I think I’m better off. Chances are if I was a card-carrying DN member (in the mold of Gates), I’d be flamed every time I posted here.

My MOM, who could ordinarily care less about sports (except the White Sox, she LOVES them), is also a Packer fan…more because of me, than because of Favre, though. Its interesting when we talk about the Packers. She might not know all there is to know about football, but she’s pretty receptive when I talk about how the Packers have done and how their personnel have performed.

Ahem...
Every team in this division is flawed, either by injury, ineptitude, or a combination of both. Green Bay has been hammered with injuries and you have no running game, Mike Martz will go back to committing Jay Cutler hari kari as soon as he comes back from a concussion, because had Todd Collins shown any semblance of being able to complete a pass, there’s no way the Bears run that much, and Detroit is still a year away.
Of the three teams, I firmly believe that the Vikings have the most talent on both sides of the ball, especially when Sidney Rice comes back. Ced Griffin’s ACL injury might change that, but Chris Cook, once he gets back out there, will be okay.
Can the Vikings do it? Yes, I believe they can. Will they? It obviously remains to be seen, but if they want to make the playoffs, they have to. I believe that this is a playoff team, so I believe they will sweep the North.
Oh, I also believed the Twins would beat the Yankees, Ohio State would beat Florida AND LSU, and MIchigan would beat Michigan State. So uh, yeah.
