Packer Notes: On The Injuries
I hate writing about the injury report mid-week, because it can change for the Green Bay Packers before the week's out, but it's such an important subplot this week that I can't ignore it.
- LB Clay Matthews. It was reported that he was back at practice on Wednesday. He's still limited, and it's no lock he'll play on Sunday. But the pass rush vanished against the Dolphins without him, and my whole outlook on this game changes if he can play.
- LB Brandon Chillar and LB A.J. Hawk. Again from the Press-Gazette, Chillar returned to practice for only the second time since week 3 (Bears game), while Hawk is out with injured groin. LB Desmond Bishop's looked great since he moved into the starting lineup, but I'd really like to see fewer sightings of LB Robert Francois (recently of the practice squad). Hopefully either Chillar or Hawk are ready to go.
- RT Mark Tauscher. A week ago, I wasn't too worried about his absence, but then rookie RT Bryan Bulaga surrendered 3 sacks to the Dolphins. Tauscher was limited in practice on Wednesday, but if he's ready, I'd like to see him start. Maybe Bulaga's just not accustomed to playing on the right side (he spent nearly the entire time in camp at left tackle or left guard before Tauscher was injured).
- CB Al Harris and SS Atari Bigby. Both returned to practice on Wednesday for the first time since 2009. It looks like Harris is further ahead, and he's as ready as he's ever going to be. It will be interesting to see what role he plays on Sunday. It doesn't look like Bigby will be ready this week.
I'm pessimistic about any of these guys playing on Sunday. Do you think any (or all) of them will be able to play?

Come on Clay!
Man we need the Claymaker back in there! With all due respect to Favre, and lots of great memories, we can’t let Mr. Crocs win in Lambeau in what will surely be his last appearance there. Speedy recovery Clay!
Hamstring injuries are bad injuries
If you have ever pulled a hamstring, you know how delicate they are. They heal at their own pace and they are very easy to re-injure. With a hammy pull you just don’t have any speed at all.
I am worried about the offensive line. Even if he can play, Tauscher will probably be limited, which means that he probably will need some help in pass blocking. Problem is that Clkifton will probably need some help too, and if we have to chip and keep a tight end in, we are down two potential receivers. That’s the recipe that spelled disaster for Rodgers last year against the Vikings (when the weak links were at RT and LT), that plus his refusal to get rid of the ball.
I am worried about the inside linebackers — if Hawk can’t go we will be in a world of hurt. For all the grief the guy gets on this site, I think he’s a solid contributor, and I don’t think there is another viable healthy backup.
Dear Clay Matthews,
Please get healthy so you can hit Brett Favre over and over again on Sunday. Thanks!
PS – anyone got any recs for places to eat/other things to see or do in GB? I’ll be there all day Saturday and Sunday :)
Any place you go will be good
for the simple reason that you will always remember it as part of your Green Bay experience!
It has been 13 years since my GB pilgramage,
but I would highly recommend Fuzzy’s bar (Shenanigans?)

Excellent Restaurant
There’s a motel in G.B. named ’The Bay Motel" with an old time diner attached that has excellent “home-style” cooking at very affordable prices (with great portion size) and the wait-staff there is as friendly as can be! Ya gotta check it out!
One More Thing
The Bay Motel & Restaurant is only a mile or so from Lambeau field
Just go to Lambeau
Hit up the stadium on Sat and take the tour, like 20 bucks or so. Its first come first served but they run every half hour- 45 mins and it is an amazing time. You can easily spend 3hrs at the stadium on a saturday checking ou the pro shop and just walking through the atrium.
thanks everyone!
So I think the plan is to get there on Saturday morning, get breakfast somewhere, not sure where yet then head over to Lambeau to do the tour and go the Hall of Fame, etc. We’re having dinner that night at Brett Favre’s Steakhouse.
Sunday we’re going to the Packer Fan Tours tailgate outside Brett Favre’s Steakhouse then going to the game! Seats are in Section 111 :) I’m pretty excited
driver
im worried about him mm seemed concerned at press conference
Intersting..
I saw that he was listed as DNP (Did-not-practice)…. Losing a valuable offensive weapon in a team dependent on the pass will always make things a little more difficult.
With you guys having this as being a divisional game and 2nd place in the division up for grabs… I am pretty sure some of these players will play. Could Driver just be getting rested up?
From what I have seen so far, Clay Mathews is a beast….. Not a guy to look forward to going up against… Lots of speed & strength there….
As for the injury report(s), seems you can generally take them as a grain of salt.. I am sure many of them will likely play….
drivers hamstring
was acting up during the game last week he miss some plays dont know if its gotten better and driver never misses practice
Sure he does.
He takes one day off a year, remember? What a slacker.
Hopefully this is just a Woodson situation: no practice, but healthy enough to play.

I wouldn’t mind if he couldn’t go… At this point I would like to see what Jones or Nelson could do for a couple games if given a full shot at starting. In less than the full number of snaps between (sharing the #3 role) them Jones and Nelson have more yards than Driver. Been seeing far too many drops from Driver too… Lets give one or both of the younger guys a shot at starting. IMO, they would provide more than Driver at this point.
Last year in less than half the snaps Jones put up 500 yds and 5 TD’s compare to Drivers barely over 1000 yds and 6 TD’s. Seems to me Jones, in his limited role, is being more productive than Driver!
You've been Stroh'd!!!
haha I just posted something about how you’d probably like that and then your post showed up! I am curious to see how Jones and Nelson do in an increased role so I say bring it on.
really
they have 3 fumbles already and there not even starters?
What's going on with Ryan Pickett and Mike Neal?
I feel pretty good about the linebackers if we have ZOMBO.COM/Jones, Chillar, Bishop, and Claymaker starting. I hated losing Barnett but I have to say Bishop hasn’t done too bad in his absence. But I’m really worried about the gaps up front and Pickett missing the last game had to have been a pretty big deal. Once Harrell (predictably) went down again, and Pickett fell right behind him, the D-Line hasn’t been great outside of Cullen Jenkins.
I know Clay Matthews missing hurt our pass rush big time but Pickett/Neal are huge blows to that part of our game as well. No coincidence that all three missing time hurt us there.
Starks
When will he be ready? Our run game is a joke.
Whenever he's ready
Don’t count on Starkes salvaging the running game. It isn’t a priority with McCarthy, and the offensive line isn’t really designed for running (apart from Sitton).
Next year for running back
Maybe this year if he plays some kick return. The guy has been out of football for almost two years. MM said that they’re basically starting from scratch with him, so he’s basically at the start of training camp/preseason at the moment. I think six weeks minimum with him, picking up the playbook and learning how to adjust to the speed of the game and all that.
Brandon Jackson has actually been doing pretty well- when we’re using him. He’s averaging something like 4.5-5/yds carry ever since his abysmal performance at the beginning of the year. We should be using him between the 20s and Kuhn in the red zone and in short yardage situations and that’s it. Our passing game is still our bread and butter, though.
Starks
I would expect a week or two to get in game shape and practice running plays that to this point he has had to just learn mentally. Give him 2 weeks and he should be pretty well up to speed. IMO, he starts getting opportunities in wk 9. And given opportunities he will provide a spark to the run game down the stretch, when McCarthy typically starts to show more commitment to the run.
You've been Stroh'd!!!
Watching Ryan Torain starting for the Skins makes me sad. We could have had him on the roster right after Grant went down. Plus he was already experienced in the ZBS…should have been a pretty quick transition.
With Starks, I really don’t expect much too quickly. He hasn’t played in 2 years and has no history with the team aside from studying the playbook. I hope he comes in and lights it up but I think he’s weeks from doing much of anything.
Torain
Cant agrue about Torain… He would have been a good pickup.
Re: Starks We’ve been over this too much already, but I think he will provide a spark down the stretch. As a starter, can’t say cuz it seems to me that Jackson will continue to start. But given some action, IMO STarks will impress.
You've been Stroh'd!!!
Yeah I hope he does. I am very bullish on him, we just differ on how quickly that impact will happen. I was VERY high on Starks in the preseason (after the draft, before he went on the PUP).
He was coached by Turner Gill.
Of course he’s going to be good.
(If anybody says a word about Kansas I’m going to pretend to punch you in the face)
KANSAS?
Kansas somehow lost 59-7 to K-State… AT HOME!
Obviously, Minnesota will hire John L. Smith to be their next head football coach.

[Punch]
Good coach meets empty cupboard. They lost their best players at a ton of positions, including the QB and top WRs. With those guys they were still pathetic. How can anyone expect them to be better. This is a long-term project for Turner. Just look what he did at Buffalo.
Also, to be fair the Wildcats just cam off an absolute ass-kicking by the Huskers. They needed to take out their frustrations somehow.
Clay is the key
The loss of Clay produced 2 straight losses. With him in the game, they would have been wins, I am certain. Heal that boy up and get him on the field! He has passed Woodson as the most important cog on our D. Green Bay will be as successful as Clay is.
I wouldn’t be so worried about Buluga starting over Tauscher. He’s done just as good a job as Tauscher has to be totally honest. If you go back and look at those sacks he gave up, two of them are on Rodgers. Both times he scrambled right into where Buluga was blocking Wake, and was sacked because of it.
The biggest thing he’s struggled with our blitz pick-ups, which is to be expected for a rookie. And honestly, our whole offensive line has struggled with blitz pick-ups, especially the interior guys.
I think we’ll see Clay play. The way it sounded, he was trying to go back into the Redskins game but was talked out of it by our trainers. He also said after that it was much more minor than his previous pull. I really think he could have played last week against the Dolphins but we chose to sit him in order to get him ready for this week’s game.
I just hope we have Pickett and Neal. I think those two playing are the two most important guys. We’ll need all the help we can get against Peterson.
Unfortunately
Neal is out this week. If Pickett can’t go again I think we’re in trouble but I think he’ll be a go. Matthews will play Chillar will play and hopefully Hawk too.

Man, I hate McCarthy’s press conferences. He almost never answers the question at hand, and then when the media continues to ask he snaps. It’s like come on man, what did you expect? They’re not stupid. It’s easy to see you’re clearly avoiding the questions they’re asking.
by packallday555 on Oct 21, 2010 4:07 PM CDT up reply actions
What did you expect?
From the reporters!!! They should know better than to ask the same question many time in different ways. When will they ever learn!!!
McCarthy is a coach who is engaging in coach-speak! Meaning they never say anything unless it doesn’t hurt and can possibly help the team in one way or another!!!
Why can’t you understand that? Are you a scribbler too?
You've been Stroh'd!!!
You’re right about the reporters but at the same it’s their job. You’re right though, the blame could go equally both ways.
Hurt or help shouldn’t be much of a factor. I’m sure the Vikings will game plan like Matthews and will be playing. They’ll also game plan for Driver. It’s not like McCarthy being mum about those guys is going to give us some great advantage or something. Too think it would is silly.

Disagree re Bulaga
Bulaga was bullrushed repeatedly by a guy 100 pounds lighter. Worse, after he was bullrushed he was tossed aside. Bulaga had a terrible game in pass protection against the Dolphins.
The holding penalty was cheap though
The flag was probably thrown because until then Bulaga had been owned, and the ref figured he must have cheated since he actually did a good job on that play.
As a former offensive lineman, I hate cheap holding calls like that one. I was actually watching Bulaga on the play and wondered if he had grabbed the front of Wake’s jersey and held him in tight (if you do it right you can actually grab his pads and hug chests so nobody can see it), but the television replay exhonerated him. The referee owes him an aopolgy for that flag.
Wake’s been one of the better pass rushers in the league this season and we gave him no help the entire game. Yes, he got bull rushed but he did a fine job. If Rodgers doesn’t scramble right into Wake, he doesn’t give up any sacks.
by packallday555 on Oct 21, 2010 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions
Just because Wake is good doesn't mean that Bulaga played well
He didn’t. Rodgers didn’t run into Wake, Wake tossed Bulaga aside to finsih his tackles.
Bulaga had a bad game, but in fairness I think he has been groomed for the left side of the line and I think that’s where he should be playing. I can’t believe that there isn’t another right tackle on the roster — it’s really the easiest O-line positioin to play (that and LG).
Not saying it does but it certainly has to be something you look at when evaluating a guy. I suppose so but I still don’t really agree.
It’s disappointing for sure. Obviously they must not consider Lang a RT but I’d still like to see him play there over Buluga.
by packallday555 on Oct 21, 2010 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions
They had something on the radio about Bulaga adjusting to the RT position.
I forget who said it, but they said something to the fact that Bulaga was getting used to the RT footwork. He is used to the left side, but I really can’t tell you how hard it would be to move positions like that. I just don’t know.
by Bush League All Star on Oct 21, 2010 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions
This discussion begins and ends with the question: “why is Bulaga being asked to play RT?”
He was on the left side al through camp, all through the first month of the season, and all of a sudden the coaches make him play his first start at RT?? …when they’ve got Lang playing defensive line? In the words of Vince Lombardi, “What the hell’s goin ON out there?!”
by Curly Lambeau on Oct 22, 2010 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions
Good point. Another one of McCarthy’s weak spots: constantly moving guys around from position to position.
by packallday555 on Oct 22, 2010 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions
Lang missed all the offseason program
And hasn’t gotten back to near where he was last year. I read he was set back in his development ALOT by not being involved in the OTA’s, mini camp and being limited in part of training camp. Thats why Lang isn’t playing! That and the backup OT has to play both positions as the Packers only keep 7 OL active on game day.
Wish you guys would learn to wrap your heads aroung that… Backups MUST play multiple positions or they don’t dress! They could put Lang in now, but apparently he is way behind Bulaga, due to missing all offseason training!
You've been Stroh'd!!!
Lets not hide behind injuries
Look at the Colts…Clark possible out for the year, Addai out 4-6 weeks, Collie out indefinitely, Sanders out
Saints – Thomas out, Bush out, Porter out, Sharper out
Do you think they’re crying and moaning about who doesn’t show up on Sunday? No, they’re grinding out Ws.
That’s what we should do. It’s time to end the screwups.
Here is an interesting article that points out our woes. And it’s not about injuries.
by Rodgers_for_MVP on Oct 21, 2010 2:03 PM CDT reply actions
umm…the injuries for the Colts that you mentioned all happened last week (except Sanders who misses more games than he plays). They haven’t been grinding anything out yet. They will have to start now though. Even so, I would be thrilled if it was only 3-4 players for us. Unfortunately its many more than that.
With the Saints, Sharper was never in so he’s more like Harris, no one is even complaining there. Bush and Thomas are tough loses but no tougher than Grant.
I agree with not hiding behind injuries and penalties but for the Packers its a bit extreme and you know it is when all the analysts bring that up when talking about the Packers. This isn’t justa couple injuries, its almost half the team.
The guy in the article makes a tremendous point. The game could very well be decided by penalties and ST both areas where the Vikings blow us out.

Lol thank you, I was just gonna say that! They’ve got like what, 5 injured people? We’ve got like 10+ haha.
by packallday555 on Oct 21, 2010 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions
I was going to say the same thing...
10 > 3-5 injuries. Consider then when these injuries happened.
by Bush League All Star on Oct 21, 2010 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions
Also consider that some of the injuries are happening at the same positions.
4 safeties including Blackmon, a couple of LBs, and the top 2 TEs. Not only are starters getting hurt, their primary back-ups are getting hurt as well. And that results in Robert Francois playing.
Also, Jarrett Bush

That article is . . . a little off
I agree with some of his points, but not really how how he argues them.
First of all, while not catastrophic, I wouldn’t say “they’re no more banged-up than other teams.” That’s a more than a little off.
While Kevin Williams again looks great, I wouldn’t say Pat Williams is playing as well as ever.
And as far as the Packers running game: Taking away the longest run will always make your rushing average look bad. In 2010 Adrian Peterson has rushed 112 times for 553 yards, or an average of 4.94. Take away his 80-yard scamper and his average is down to 4.26. OH MY GOD! Apparently Adrian Peterson is just an average back!
“Minnesota allows just 9.1 yards per reception, and three of their four interceptions took place in the fourth quarters of its two wins. Passing on the Vikings late in the game is more likely to produce a mistake than a big play.” When do most interceptions come in games? In the first quarter when most non-Packers teams have balanced attacks? Or late in the game when teams start heaving up desperate passes? He also fails to mention that the Vikings give up a completion rate of 64.7%, 24th in the NFL. Which means short passes still work.
Yes, the Packers have other problems besides injuries, but he doesn’t really say anything that everyone on this blog doesn’t already know. And he doesn’t say it as well as most people here. And I think I’d like to add, on behalf of Strohman, that he doesn’t use enough exclamation points!!!
by I voted for Kodos on Oct 21, 2010 3:37 PM CDT up reply actions
We’re probably the most banged up team in the NFL. That statement by him is pretty far off.
Yeah, that’s really always the case with Peterson. A lot of times he actually gets stuffed at the line for only a yard or two but then every once in a while has a 10+ yard run to sort of even things out. You could do with any running back in the league, or any team really and get the same results.
by packallday555 on Oct 21, 2010 4:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Barry Sanders was that way.

The strange playcalling. It has really baffled me how messed up we are calling and executing plays in the 4th quarter. Our team looks chaotic once that quarter is underway…

the issue with this
the injuries we have sustained are four starters that actually have an impact throughout the game the only one the colts will miss is clark for sure and maybe collie sanders hasnt played consistently in a season since they one vinces trophy its honestly a bad thing when a team says that injuries and penalties are the cause but look at our team as soon as we think were getting guys healthy again two more go down at this rate anyone whose on the practice squad will see action this year
the real issue
honestly the injuries kill us they kill alot of teams it seemed after week one that with grant going down that because we cant run all the well that arod would get shut down with defenses dropping 7 sometimes 8 guys into coverage doubling jennings and finley before we lost him but rodgers still manages to find someone. what i say the real issue is mm and his lets kill the clock in the second half no reason to keep pounding opposing secondaries are defense which seems to have taken the worst of the injuries this year lets rely on them have play the entire second half for the most part his conservative play calling in the second half seems to be what kills us but thats just me what do you think??
I think that’s been a problem in games for sure. He did it against the Eagles and Lions. I don’t think he did this in the Redskins game but I still think his play-calling left something to be desired. Spreading the ball out so much wasn’t working and yet he kept going back to it over and over. Of course, Rodgers also called for the offense to be spread out more so maybe McCarthy was simply complying to his wishes. I don’t really know what it was, or has been. Whatever it is though, it’s just not working. Clearly we need to get back to our short passing game. That’s what makes this offense go. Not going for a big play every other play.
