Better Know Your Opponent: Jets Fans Predictions Against The Packers

According to NFL.com, the Jets have thrown 179 pass attempts and had 193 rushing attempts. For comparison, the Packers have 236 pass attempts and 157 rushing attempts. The Jets are primarily a rushing team in what's become a passing league. On the flip side, the Jets opponents have attempted 214 passes while only rushing 155 times. Either teams like their chances better through the air, they've been playing from behind against a 5-1 team, or maybe it's a little of both.

With QB Mark Sanchez coming off a 2 INT game, and their outstanding pass defense playing below average (a middling 6.8 yards per pass attempt with 10 TD passes allowed), Jets fans are largely focused on what to expect from their pass offense and pass defense. A couple sites have noticed that the Packers have few healthy defensive lineman, and that the Jets are really good at running the ball. As you might expect, none of them even mention the seldom used (but surprisingly effective) Packer rushing attack. Click on the links below for their entire preview.

From Gang Green Nation: "Holmes has only been active for two weeks and will continue to improve as the season goes on. He is a phenomenal compliment to Edwards, as opposing secondaries must keep a safety at home but somehow keep an eye on both of them."

Star-divide

From Jets Gab: "It will be close, but the Jets are playing well and will find a way here."

From Jets Fan: "The Packers certainly present some challenges for the Jets, especially when they throw the football but overall, the Jets match up pretty well against them."

From Jersey Jets Fan: "The Packers can't stop the run. What do the Jets do? They run the ball and they run it well."\

From Jets Kvetch: "The Jets offensive line will need to step it up this game and protect Sanchez from a tough Packer pass rush...I fully expect to see opponent QB's reeling on the turf, starting this week with Aaron Rodgers."

From Fanhouse: "Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie almost certainly be tested by Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receivers Greg Jennings and Donald Driver." (Almost unaware that Driver was held without a catch last week as he's struggling with a quad injury).

From New York Jets Fan Blog: "Look for the Jets to "Ground and Pound" the Pack all afternoon."

I didn't see anything up there that I didn't understand or agree with.

I think our only realistic chance is to sell out against the run so to make Sanchez beat us and for him to completely waffle.

Blitz Rodgers at your own peril...

Rodgers has shown the past couple years that he can beat blitzes. This year teams are trying a new tactic and its working to some degree so far… They’re playing coverage! The NYJ will play who they are and who Rex Ryan is… They’ll blitz and this plays into Rodgers hands! NY will certainly run the ball and control the clock, but IMO, it will come down the final minutes w/ Rodgers having the ball in his hands w/ a chance to win!!

Score 23-20 either way!

You've been Stroh'd!!!

Not out of reach for the Packers to win this

I feel like the defense should be able to hold the Jets to 20 points. If the Packers can put 24+ points on the board, and no disasters (e.g. pick-6s, or big run backs on punts/ko), that’s likely a win for the Green + Gold.

The Jets best strategy is probably the same one the Dolphins used: run the ball a lot, and dominate time of possession to keep Rodgers and the offense off the field.

I was really glad to see 3 offensive TDs Sunday night, and B.Jackson starting to get some quality yards. Hopefully MM will stay aggressive like that on play calling again.

The effort the Packers put up against Minnesota Sunday Night

if we put up that same effort against the Jets, we’ll lose. I’m pretty sure of that.

I think it revolves around the D-line

If Cullen Jenkins and Ryan Pickett are out like last sunday, then we’re toast. Really, the easy running lanes for Adrian Peterson were all that kept them in the game. Let’s not forget that the Vikings were just as close to beating the Jets as they were the Packers.

by Mr. Saturn on Oct 29, 2010 5:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Not how sure how realistic it is for you to think that your banged up D can hold the Jets to 20 or below. After scoring a measely 9 in the opening game of the season, the Jets scored 28, 31, 38, 29, and 24; for an average of 26.5 per (30 per over the last 5). And the fact that you guys have surrendered 20 or more in 5 of your 7 games doesnt really bode well for that theory of victory.

I think the best bet for you guys is for Rodgers to be on fire and hang at least a 30 on the board. If he only throws 2 TDs and has 2 picks to with them, it will be tough for you guys to get out of NY with a “W.”

Well, 1) the Packers have been dealing with injuries since week 1, and 2) the Broncos’ D was 1 interference penalty away from holding the Jets to 17 points. I figure Packers’ D > Broncos D, so….

Jets scored 28, 31, 38, 29, and 24; for an average of 26.5 per

Not sure how impressive that 38 is—everybody scores 34+ points on the Bills (well, except the Fins). Or that game that was 20-22 until the ol’ Gunslinger threw a pick-6 with 90 seconds left.

It’s going to be a stretch for sure, and would be a huge win for the Packers, but like I said above, it’s within reach. We’ll just have to wait for Sunday to find out.

Healthy Packers D is better than the Broncos, no question. But you guys aren’t close to healthy. And we played the Broncos in Mile High, with their backs against the wall, a week before our by-week. You can nit-pick a play here or there to take away just about any TD. Fact is though, the face-mask was clearly yanked on that play (no-brainer flag), and if it wasn’t Holmes clearly would’ve caught that ball.

Those lowly Bills is the same team that scared the bejesus out of the Ravens last week.

Not at all saying that the game is out of reach for you guys. Yeah, i think we’re justifiably favored, but i think that you guys can win. I just don’t that with your defense being the way it is, that holding the Jets to under 20 is realistic. I think the way you win is by Rodgers having another one of those games where he looks like he’ll be in Canton when his career is all said and done.

by Crackback on Oct 30, 2010 8:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Probably right, though I do expect our defense to fare a little bit than most would think. Hopefully the good performance against the Vikings will carry over. If Jenkins and Pickett are back, I actually like our offense vs. your defense quite a bit. It’s sounding like only Jenkins has a chance to play, and even that sounds questionable which isn’t promising.

It’ll be interesting to see how our receivers fare against your secondary. Obviously, everyone knows about Revis and Cromartie. I kind of think Driver will get shut down because he isn’t 100% right now. I’m not sure who you’ll put on Jennings though and who you’ll put on Driver. I know Jennings has had some success against Cromartie in the past so that match-up doesn’t scare as much as it normally would. I kind of see Jennings and Driver getting held in check. I think it’ll come down to whether or not Jones and Nelson (who are both very capable) can beat their guys. It’s really ashame we don’t have Finley.

by packallday555 on Oct 30, 2010 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Jennings v. Cromartie

If I remember correctly Cromartie is frequently beaten on double moves. Jennings does a might fine double move, and has the speed to take it all the way if he beats his guy. We’ll need at least one of those to beat the Jets.

Yeah, he had success against him a couple of years ago when we played the Chargers.

by packallday555 on Oct 30, 2010 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions

coverage

I think that might have been in zone or off coverage. Cromartie gets lazy in either, but excels in Press Man coverage. It was awile ago so I can’t say for sure, but it seems to me Cromartie wasn’t in press alot in that game vs the Packers.

You've been Stroh'd!!!

by Strohman on Oct 30, 2010 2:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Cromartie played mostly zone in SD.

With that said, he is liable to go for double moves.

by BIG OH!!!!! on Oct 30, 2010 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I know you can't really do it

But I would love to see us run at Cromartie and force him to make some tackles. He has more children than good tackles.

by I voted for Kodos on Oct 30, 2010 8:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Why?

I think you can definitely run at Cromartie! I don’t think that would be a difficult thing to game plan for at all… And I imagine the Packers will do some of it. Doesn’t even take an elaborate blocking scheme, IMO, to do just that…

Others disagree, but I think it is something you can do!

You've been Stroh'd!!!

by Strohman on Oct 30, 2010 8:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Not impossible

Just very difficult. You could do a pitch with the WR coming in to cut off the linebacker, but it’s not easy to isolate one guy and just run at him. If it were that easy Deion Sanders would have been exclusively a baseball player after a few seasons of teams running straight at him.

by I voted for Kodos on Oct 30, 2010 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions

You CAN (sometimes)…but I don’t know if WE can. We don’t have a strong enough running game to pull it off.

by TrevorR on Oct 31, 2010 8:00 AM CDT up reply actions

Thought you said the problem was committment

Not the running game itself?!

You've been Stroh'd!!!

by Strohman on Oct 31, 2010 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

No I said you can’t get there. If you start doing it with regularity the D is going to adjust and send linebackers.

by TrevorR on Nov 1, 2010 7:23 AM CDT up reply actions

Plus I really don’t think we have a good enough running game to even try to execute something like that.

by TrevorR on Nov 1, 2010 7:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Just a few quick points:

  • I didn’t mean to suggest the DPI call wasn’t legit (I didn’t see the game, so I can’t really say)
  • My point was more that having 4th+6 at midfield with 86 seconds left was really precarious
  • Yeah, I know playing @ Mile High is tough. Playing @ Medowlands no cake-walk, either ;-)

turnovers...

TO’s decide the victory. period. two tough teams. Edwards will pose problems for us. he’s a stud when he gets the ball in his hands. James Jones needs to play like a stud.

I meant bi as in

bi-curious. Most teams have a bye week, as in a week off. The Bears have a week to explore their sexuality. I believe a Bear is also a term for a large hairy man in the homosexual community. At least that’s what I learned from TV.

it’s the Vikings that wear purple, so . . . go figure. I believe Gilbert Brown once weighed in on this (no pun on weighed/weight intended).

I don't disagree with the Jets fans above

All things being equal, I feel Jets 65/35% for the win, but of course T.O.s/injuries can change that.

Not a bad way to approach this game if you're the Packers

On offense, call a conservative game. More runs than you’ve shown in the last three weeks. Screens, slants, and tell Rodgers to quit thinking he knows everything about everyone in the league. Audibles to a deep strike kept to 2 or 3 total, please.

On defense, keep ‘em at home and hope they can tackle. Well, 80% of the time, anyway. That other 20%? Rush. Rush with everything. Throw the kitchen sink at ’em. Make Sanchez squirm wondering if he’s gonna see Matthews’ smiling mug standing over him this play or the next one. And when you rush, look for the outlets. One of our MLBs plus 4 DBs in man can defense almost anything. Turn defensing passes into picks whenever possible.

My almost-assuredly-incorrect prediction for the Packers’ D: 1 forced fumble and 2 INTs. My prediction for the final score is not fit for this blog, but I hope to be proven wrong.
