Morgan Burnett Out For The Year With Torn ACL

It worried me on Sunday as I watched SS Morgan Burnett limping on the sidelines. He appeared to be testing his knee out. Unfortunately it reminded me of week 1 when RB Ryan Grant was limping along the sidelines, trying to prove his ankle was better so he could get back into the game. Just as Grant's ankle injury was season-ending, so is Burnett's knee injury. From Journal-Sentinel:

S Morgan Burnett is out for the season with an ACL tear. McCarthy thinks he played for a few series with the tear.

There's no upside here. S Derrick Martin, who had an INT against the Bears in relief of S Nick Collins, will take over, and I'm still suspicious of him after he messed up the game last season in Minnesota. With backup S Charlie Peprah also injured, I'm assuming that the new backup safety is Jarrett Bush.

Martin is likely to be a temporary starter until SS Atari Bigby returns from the PUP list in a couple weeks. Since Bigby's missed all of training camp and the regular season, there's no word on how he looks until he's eligible to return to the practice field. But they'll be very thin at safety until then.

We go to Washington next week

McNabb hasn’t been great this year, but he’s good at connecting deep with Santana Moss. I don’t really trust Derrick Martin, and I expect Collins to leave the game at some point with a minor injury like he always seems to do.

The Redskins aren’t a great team, but this could very well be a loss. Then Brandon Marshall and the Dolphins come to Lambeau, before Bigby returns, I’m a little worried.

Not good. Maybe Sir Charles can cover two guys at once.

I think Martin will be fine

Having said that, this thinking is IF he gets the first team snaps in practice and they don’t split them with someone else like Bush, etc.

Bush is a great blitzing safety...

Sadly his coverage skills leave a LOT to be desired.

Too bad...

I was hoping Burnett would be able to use the first half of the season to gain experience before Bigby took over, and then be ready to step in and take over next season. This may mean the Packers have to re-sign Bigby as a FA, to cover themselves in case Burnett isn’t ready to take over next season. Burnett was doing OK and hadn’t given up any real big plays, but was really lacking in run support. Bigby will help in that regard and in tackling in the open field overall, something Burnett already struggled with… Burnett isn’t likely to come back a more willing and agressive open field tackler. Hope he can get back just to where he was this season, next year!

by Strohman on Oct 4, 2010 1:35 PM CDT reply actions

It would have been GREAT to have both of them available. We could have even interchanged them depending on situations and then keeping them both fresh. This really makes things tough for the next few weeks against a tough stretch in our schedule! I hope Bigby is doing well on the PUP…we NEED him.

Who do you think we fill the roster spot with?

by TrevorR on Oct 4, 2010 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

No way

There is NO way the Packers would interchange them!!! It give away the playcalls… You just don’t interchange positional players like that! This isn’t college football!

I don’t think this will be a difficult thing to overcome at all… Martin will do just fine playing safety until Bigby is ready. He knows the defensive play calls and will play his responsibility very well, which is really all Burnett was doing minus being a good open field tackler, which IMO Martin will do much better at… Bigby should be ready by week 8 at the latest!

Could bring Levine back to take Burnetts roster spot… They will need another DB, but could use Bush as a multi-position guy and use the roster spot at another position. My guess is the later…

They do it with running backs. They do it on the defensive line all the time too.

Off topic here, but . . .

Please check out the Fan Post from John L. He needs help against a Vikings fan and I suggest we all chip in as much as we can. Any chance we could get an upgrade to full posting on that? Although there really isn’t anything we can do to help the Packers beat the Vikings (short of finding a playbook) we can help a Packer fan beat a Viking fan.

I voted for Kodos

My sign-in name has nothing to do with this contest. I do not know John L. and have no real connection to this at all except my belief that not all NFL fans are created equal. There is a definite hierarchy and the Packers are at the top, while Vikings fans are fan equivalent of Detroit Lions teams.

As a Sox fans we're use to having a GM who will go out and quickly make the moves that are requied here...whether they work out or not...

It’s tough to watch Ted just sit idly by as the Packers are in desperate need of a RB and now a safety.

Not desperate for EITHER.

Martin will do just fine till Bigby returns and Starks will be coming back at the same time! Wouldn’t mind a trade for Lynch, but don’t see it happening and I’m not going to be upset in the least if they don’t!

This isn't baseball. In season trades are rare in the NFL.
It’s tough to watch Ted just sit idly by

You talk as if there are starting caliber players just hanging out on the street. Yes Lynch is a luxury for the Bills, but the Bills GM knows we have a need there and if he is doing his job correctly he raised the price when we called. He is not a big enough upgrade to warrant leveraging our future. Also, name one starting caliber safety that is available for trade after only the 4th week. Teams don’t throw in the towel after only 4 weeks.

He would be a big upgrade though, even over Grant. Have you watched him at all this season? He’s looked really good, especially running the ball. He’s also a great option out of the back field too as a receiver.

by packallday555 on Oct 4, 2010 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Lynch

I like Lynch and would be happy to see him in GB. For a 3rd rd pick I would do it, but not a 2nd… And thats me, Thompson probably won’t give up a 3rd for a player like Lynch. Grant is more than serviceable and Starks has alot of potential, so I don’t see Thompson trading for Lynch! I’m fine w/ that too…

Lynch has talent, but he isn’t a that dynamic either… Good or better at everything, but not dymamic at anything!

by Strohman on Oct 4, 2010 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree, the price is probably too high, but I think Lynch is definitely a big upgrade over Grant. He brings similar running abilities to the table with better blocking and great receiving skills. For a pass-first offense like ours those skills would make him much more valuable than Grant. And that way we don’t have to waste a roster spot on a good third-down back who can’t run the ball (Jackson). The one drawback on Lynch is his tendency to get injured, though, and that could look really foolish if he sprains something right before the playoffs. I really wish Thompson had made the trade in the offseason, but no use acting out of desperation.

it really took me a while to get used to the fact that trades dont happen in the nfl

I would assume it takes a lot longer to get used to a new playbook in football than it takes a pitcher to learn his catcher’s signs or a batter to learn the base coach’s signs. That’s probably part of the reason. A much larger part of the reason is that in baseball there is no revenue sharing, and 2/3 of the teams are little more than farm clubs for the big shots. Every time a young player’s first contract is up and they play for a small market team, they become trade bait. Sure, it equals more trades but it’s also the reason I don’t care about baseball anymore.

by I voted for Kodos on Oct 4, 2010 5:02 PM CDT up reply actions

Neither!

Buffalo doesn’t want Hawk and we don’t need a safety! Martin will do just fine in Burnetts place till Bigby is back around wk 8. Not like Burnett was playing lights out by any stretch!

by Strohman on Oct 4, 2010 2:26 PM CDT up reply actions

You’re probably right. I think we need to make move for a running back though. Kuhn and Jackson aren’t cutting it against middle of the road teams, so they definitely won’t be cutting it against good teams.

by jobe on Oct 4, 2010 2:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Last year is last year

Martin has had more time in Caper’s version of the 3-4 now. It’s up to the coaches to see that he gets plenty of First Team reps, and not split them with someone else.

I see that as the problem with a lot of players. They can’t settle in because of this sharing time.

by Darrell L on Oct 4, 2010 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Last year

Martin was forced to play safety before he even knew the defensive playcalls! He wasn’t in GB during the entire training camp. He was acquired at the cutdown to 53. Had about a week or two before he was playing in coverage and was playing safety after having been a CB most of his career in Baltimore.

Now Martin has over a year w/ training camp and OTA’s to learn Capers D and how to play safety! Does that cover it? Or do you need more?

by Strohman on Oct 4, 2010 4:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I think I agree…I think Martin gets it well enough to be an adaquate fill in. i hope Bigby is ready to go fairly quickly though.

This hurts

I hope Burnett is better by next season. He was proving to be a valuable playing in pass coverage. With Bigby coming back in a couple weeks at least our Run D will improve, but now I’m going to be concerned on stopping the pass all year. I’m not in support of a trade though. We need to stand pat and wait for Bigby to return.

Did not play a snap until the kneel down yesterday, showed potential but is in Eric Mangini’s doghouse? Seems like we could grab him cheap.

I think he’s coming off injury but yeah, he could be an option I suppose. I really doubt we do anything though.

by packallday555 on Oct 4, 2010 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

There are quite a few guys buried on depth charts that could be interesting/appealing options. Looks like we missed our chance on Ryan Torain who might start this week for the Skins. But there are guys like Tashard Choice, Tolbert, Slaton, Kevin Smith (?), etc. I agree with PAD though, if we couldn’t get it done for Lynch, I don’t think its going to happen.

by TrevorR on Oct 6, 2010 7:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, the 'Skins are definitely holding onto Torrain.

Choice might be possible. The Chargers might hold onto Tolbert for insurance. Slaton is not what we need (great screen guy but can’t run between the tackles at all). I don’t think Smith is available nor would I trade for him with his injury issues.

by Omaha Sun on Oct 6, 2010 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Emotional

You know, with Grant, I could kinda figure what he was going through being put on IR. For Burnett, I can’t. The guy was nearly at the top of the rollercoaster when this happened. I feel sorry for him, and hope he can stay mentally strong through this and be back for the Pack next year.

It’s almost like I wish that we fans would send players letters and cards “Get Well Soon,” “Hang in there,” “We’re pulling for you.”

Not the kid’s fault he’s out. Damn I can’t imagine . . . .

by GinSlinger on Oct 4, 2010 5:21 PM CDT reply actions

Enough with the Grant replacement talk already

let’s give the ball to the backs a few more times a game first. I honestly don’t see how they’ve faired any worse than Ryan would have. You have to run those plays. Those plays have decreased in frequency maybe by half. Hard to tell just how good or bad we’re off without giving it a legitimate test.

This is probably true. I don’t know, maybe Kuhn could get it done getting 15 carries or so a game and do a decent job. But the only way he’ll do ok is if we can open up holes for him, which is something our offensive line doesn’t do all that much.

by packallday555 on Oct 4, 2010 7:59 PM CDT up reply actions

We need to just give Kuhn a chance. He’s averaging well over 4 ypc. Maybe he is our version of Hillis from the Browns.

Eh…I know you aren’t high on Grant…and either am I but he’d be doing better. He’s still a big upgrade over the mire that we are currently stuck in. That said, with this RB setback now, its time to give Kuhn his shot at 15 carries to see how he does. Still use Jackson in the same role he was in when Grant was here.

how we always get so many injuries. First Grant, now Burnett.

by Ian O'Brien on Oct 4, 2010 8:08 PM CDT reply actions

no kiddin packers always seem to have two big injurys every year

by Henry Black on Oct 4, 2010 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

Injuries

Every team has injuries they have to overcome. The Vikings are without Sidney Rice, and that hurts them. The Eagles have had so many starting QBs get hurt that it’s starting to look like a conspiracy. When I heard about Burnett a huge wave of emotions swept through me – mostly anger, depression, and a sense of being treated unfairly. I like the point someone made about Burnett not necessarily playing lights out. He was definitely good and made some good plays, but it’s not like Charles Woodson is out for the season. Injuries are part of the NFL (cliche) and it’s a coach’s job to work around them. I’m totally pissed about Burnett being out for the season, but we will make something work.

What makes this seem worse is that it’s just one more negative thing for the team. Ryan Grant gets injured, we lose to the Bears, we barely escape the Lions, and now Burnett is injured. I think we just need some super positive news to help alleviate this black cloud that seems to be hanging around.

by smileyfacejackson on Oct 4, 2010 11:25 PM CDT reply actions

Let's not forget

Jay Cutler is concussed, Todd Collins got banged up, and the Bears will have to rely on a 3rd stringer pretty soon because their offensive line is horrible, worse than ours was last year.

by vitaminx on Oct 5, 2010 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Kurt Warner

I read an interesting bit on him yesterday (but can’t remember from where). He explained his 5 year stint with mediocrity as kind of like a hangover from being in Martz’s system and all the concussions he took there. He was able to be his “old self” only after sitting on the bench for a while and getting his head right.

Long story short…if Martz is around next year, I don’t see Cutler having a long and glorious career in Chicago.
