Around SBN: Lance Berkman Could Have Torn ACL

Aaron Kampman injured in practice...out for season

Apparently Aaron Kampman didn't get out of Green Bay quite soon enough as our injury bug struck him despite him playing for Jacksonville now. The news out of Jacksonville is that Kampman has suffered a torn ACL during Thursday's practice and is out for the season.

Kampman signed a four-year, $25 million contract during the offseason and he has helped improve a pass-rush that produced only 14 sacks last season. Thanks to Kampman, who leads the team with four sacks, the Jaguars already have 14 in their first eight games. Kampman tore the ACL in his left knee last November, but recovered in time to make an immediate impact this season. He will be placed on injured reserve and have surgery at a later date.

Tore the ACL in his right knee this time

You gotta feel for the guy. Hoping for a speedy recovery for a guy who plays the right way.

Kampy

Feel really bad for Kampy!!! He’s a quality player and man!!! Too bad about him missing another year… Just when he was getting completely recovered from the previous ACL…

Wonder how this might affect the conditional compensatory pick we will get. I would say we were in line for a 3rd or 4th at the latest. His injury might now make it a 4th at best and maybe a 5th or 6th….

Curious about the date of his ACL last year… Isn’t it almost exactly a year to the day? Early November last year too?

I thought someone earlier this year talked about how the compensatory picks were mostly related to the contract a player gets. I always thought it was on performance but they seemed to say it wasn’t at all…

anyone know??

I believe it's the contract.

When the Chargers wouldn’t trade Vincent Jackson and everyone assumed they’d get a 3rd rounder for the sort of contract he’d sign, people were talking about how he could sign a contract next that would screw them over for the compensatory pick (I believe it was incentive heavy contract, but I may be wrong) in order to get some revenge for how they dealt with him.

Pretty sure its both

the contract and performance! The contract pushes it up for sure, so if its similar to a Franchise kinda player, or pro bowl kinda contract, its a 3rd, then it can fall a little based on the performance w/ his new team. If he still is near pro bowl level its a 3rd and goes down a little based on stats. With Kampy missing half the season, and likely the half when he would have put up his best numbers based on being more recovered from surgery his numbers won’t be much to keep the compensatory pick in the 3rd or 4th range.

Not certain, but I’m pretty sure thats how it works.

According to Wikipedia (so it's GOTTA be true)

The things that go into the super-duper-top-secret formula for comp picks are salary, playing time, and postseason team honors, with salary being the primary part. Link

Playing time

Is the playing time based on game plays or season? In other words, Kampman played the majority of snaps in the games available, but since injured didn’t do so for the entire season… Any idea?

I'd assume for the season

But I can’t find anything to back that up.

Looks like the Jags will only get 14 sacks again this year.
