Thursday Night Open Thread: Bears at Dolphins

MIAMI - NOVEMBER 14: Miami Dolphins players are introduced against the Tennessee Titans at Sun Life Stadium on November 14 2010 in Miami Florida. (Photo by Marc Serota/Getty Images)

The injury situation looked dreadful for the Dolphins on Sunday, but they're in decent shape with two big exceptions. No. 3 QB Tyler Thigpen will get the start since Pennington and Henne are injured. While he did start some games for the Chiefs in 2008, that was a couple years ago. And LT Jake Long has a shoulder injury but could play through it. Their backup plan isn't any good according to the Phinsider, but the Dolphins do play a lot of max protection.

While the Bears come into this game with only one starter out, the short week will be tough on both teams.

The Dolphins are favored by 1.5 which is a sign the odds makers don't know what to think of this game.

I just had a weird conspiracy theory thought

What if more holding penalties were going unflagged due to the hold in question saving a QB from getting mauled? I mean, a pure beast rush that would have resulted in a significant chance of injury to the story-makers in the NFL. If the hold was completely unnecessary (QB in the act of throwing when it occurs, f’rinstance), fine, we’ll throw the flag. But if the QB was saved from a potential bone-jarring hit, we’ll look the other way…

by Clutch16 on Nov 18, 2010 8:16 PM CST up reply actions

Interesting take.

I don’t think that is the case though. A player holds…they are going to call it. I don’t think they would try to predict whether the QB would get mauled or not.

by Bush League All Star on Nov 18, 2010 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not saying that it's necessarily true

But it fits in with the NFL’s general “protect the QB” mantra, and it explains a helluva lot of “Why didn’t that guy get flagged for holding the Claymaker?” comments.

My mind does strange things sometimes.

Very good reasons.

I waited until I was 21. It was a good choice considering some similarities in our families’ past. Just have to be responsible. You seem like you are a responsible young lad (though probably only 5 years my junior). Alcohol is not for everyone, and I would never pressure someone to do so. I was a Reds fan back in the day of the Big Red Machine,

already, when I went to my first MLB game, in 1975, at Riverfront Stadium.
Pete Rose was 4 for 5 that game, with a walk off HR.
After the first 40 games, the Reds were 20-20.
Then, they moved Pete from LF to 3B and put George Foster in LF to get Foster’s bay in the lineup on an everyday basis, finished 108-54 and beat the Red Sox in one of the most classic WS ever.

When it comes to beer and spirits. Not so much with wine, though. You can find some very good deals on some extremely drinkable wines if you’re willing to look.

That’s not the case with liquor ’n beer, though. The cheap stuff is cheap for a reason

Might as well be

Bears know they’ve got it won, so they’re keeping it on the ground

Why couldn't they suck this bad when we played them?

It’s not like the Bears defense is doing great. They could just pull the defense and Miami would still not get yards.

by Bush League All Star on Nov 18, 2010 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

They would have if Thigpen was their QB in that game.

Their offense is crippled right now.

They're having one of those years, aren't they?

They should probably be 4-5 right now and then they catch the Phins with a UFL roster on the field.

UFL ha!

But yeah, it is going to be one of those years for them.

by Bush League All Star on Nov 18, 2010 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

They'll probably get bounced in the WC or Divisional Round, then.

Beat Northwestern and Michigan, THEN I'll talk Wisconsin in the BCS. But not until that happens.

by OBrienSchofieldismyHero on Nov 18, 2010 10:51 PM CST up reply actions

Completely different game if Miami had an actual NFL QB playing tonight.

Thigpen starting means they cheat up against the run, don’t fear the pass (and rightfully so), the Phins can’t hold the ball, so the Bears eventually wear the Phins down, and Bears fans act like this game proves something.

All the dropped picks don’t help either.

Agreed.

But the thing that bothers me about NFL players…if you are a professional, you should be able to catch a damn ball.

omg show the game on nfl network please

all they do is show the talking heads

WGN Chicago is only on cable in the Chicagoland area

Or you can pick it up over the air.

And the local version is a CW affiliate (I think)

So WGNA shows syndicated shows while the local shows CW fare.

Damn, I don’t know what to think about this. I think the Bears are gonna start getting a lot of hype and I’m not sure it’s deserved. I wish they Dolphins would have had Henne, a healthy Long, and Marshall for more then a half.
