Monday Night Open Thread: Broncos at Chargers

Reasons to care about this game: the Chargers are playing better than their record, QB Philip Rivers may deserve the MVP award, and the Broncos might have saved their coach's job last week with a win (and they may need to do it again).

Reasons not to care: two AFC teams, and they both have losing records.

In the end, I'll probably watch because it's on, but obviously this game means nothing for the Packers.

hard to fathom

any self-respecting chiefs fan rooting for the broncos under any circumstances. not that i am one, i’m just here in chiefs country, and they HATE them some broncos.

As much as the Raiders do?

Packers-Bears has mellowed in recent decades, but that rivalry never loses steam.

I've known a few Raiders fans

Went to high school in a western state where people could kinda pick and choose who they rooted for. You could always be sure of at least some strong language in the halls on Broncos-Raiders weeks.

Look what Moreno can do when he's healthy....

… can you imagine what a beast of an offense we’d have with 1st round talent at RB? I wouldn’t be surprised at all by a 1st round pick next year spent at OT again or along the DL (since it looks like they’re going to let Jenkins walk, for reasons I don’t quite understand), but I can think of a couple of college RBs likely to come out whom I’d freaking love to see in a Packer uni. Then Jackson can slide back into the 3rd down RB role he’s made for.

I’d love to see us draft a talented running back. I think it could put our offense over the top.

by packallday555 on Nov 22, 2010 8:03 PM CST up reply actions

I don’t get why we seem to be hard balling Jenkins either. He’s been consistently good for us, and is our second best pass rusher. I know he’s 29 or 30 but he still probably has a couple years left in him as a pass rusher.

Plus, he plays hurt.

That’s huge for the big DL guys on Capers 3-4. With all they’re asked to do they’re going to get dinged up and you’re going to need them to play through it. He holds up against the run and gets surprising pressure given his size. The only thing I can figure is that they think Jolly’s going to step right back to the level he was at last year when he returns. That would leave them with Jolly, Raji, Pickett, Neal as their top 4 DL going into the draft. I like Pickett as much as the next guy, but you can’t ask him to play more than 30 snaps.

Jenkins and Williams are two deals that need to get done by the first of the year. I know it’ll cost them bonus money going into the lockout which might be why they’re prioritizing Williams but ignoring Jenkins, which seems to be the case.

There isn't a coach on

God’s green earth that will be able to turn that franchise around in a timely fashion. That is a 5 year project up there. The only thing they have going for them is a MVP caliber RB, other than that I struggle to find many other bright spots.

It just seemed like the Vikings were the team where he would fit in the worst

They have a RB who can do everything well except catch and block, so they go out….and get a power RB who can’t catch very well, or block.

He would be a good fit on a team with a smaller, multi-purpose back, where he would fit the power role. But Adrian Peterson is already 10x more powerful than him.

They’ve spent a ton of money these last few years. They have a lot of players whose contracts are up, including Sidney Rice, Ray Edwards, Ben Leber, Chad Greenway, and good old Phat Williams.

Not at all

There are some who always have a BAC above .01 – the technical term for them is “alcoholics”. These people can put away awesome amounts of hooch and still wake up in the morning. I used to room with a guy who weighed maybe a buck-thirty soaking wet and he’d put down a fifth a night. Held down an accounting job, too.

Like anything else, alcohol consumption can be improved with practice. I don’t recommend the training regimen, though.

Too Early Playoff Picture:

AFC
North: Baltimore 7-3
South: Jacksonville 6-4
East: New York Jets 8-2
West: Kansas City 6-4
WC1: New England 8-2
WC2: Pittsburgh 7-3
Outside looking in: Indianapolis 6-4, 4 team at 5-5

NFC
North: Chicago 7-3
South: Atlanta 8-2
East: Philadelphia 7-3
West: Seattle 5-5 (WTF)
WC1: New Orleans 7-3
WC2: Green Bay 7-3
Outside looking in: Tampa Bay 7-3, New York Giants 6-4, Washington 5-5

NFC East: New York Giants goes from Division champ to outside looking in and Philadelphia takes over after their win.

It is all rooted in Jerry Jone's takeover..

I was living in Dallas at the time, Jones had just bought the team in ’89 and fired Tom Landry like he was Chilly. I loved Landry as a kid and still think he was a total class act. The team preceeds to go 1-15, and like everyone else in Dallas I disowned them, just about the time the Packers were playing really exciting football with Majik. We went 10-6 that year and just missed the playoffs. I have loved this team every since. It is like no other in the league.

I seem to recall a joke going around Texas during that 1-15 season

A Cowboys fan is pushing his shopping cart around the grocery store when he remembers something. He had left his Cowboys season tickets laying right out on the dashboard of his truck! He abandons his cart and sprints out of the store to his truck only to find that his worst fears have come true. Someone busted out his window and left two more Cowboys season tickets on his dash.

HA!

You saw more 49ers, Oilers and Raiders gear being worn in that town than anything. No one was supporting that team, and I mean no one. It was a combination of the total disrespect Jones showed Landry in the way he fired him (like he was nobody), and then followed up with the one win season. But oh how they flocked back when the team was winning, I just never did. And caught shit to the tenth power for being a Packer fan.

Injury update
McCarthy said that both safeties Atari Bigby (hamstring) and Anthony Smith (ankle) will be hard-pressed to play this week after getting hurt in Sunday’s game. Jarrett Bush played a few snaps at safety on Sunday when Charlie Peprah had to come out of the game briefly, and Capers said Bush would remain the first option as a backup safety if Smith and Bigby can’t play.

I didn’t watch the game as I was out of town, but did these injuries look bad?
