Monday Night Open Thread: 49ers at Cardinals

What an awful matchup. Sometimes ESPN gets caught with a late season Monday night game that looked like a good one several months ago. At what point since the retirement of QB Kurt Warner did this game ever look like a good matchup? Did Gruden want to call at least one 49ers game before he took over as their next head coach?

Into everybody's life, a little rain must fall

So I tried to make white brownies tonight – not blondie brownies, white brownies, using white chocolate, egg whites and bleached flour. I did all the chocolate-cocoa/cocoa butter fat conversions and came up with a recipe, only to find there’s no actual cocoa (or cocoa butter) in white chocolate. I plowed ahead, anyway, forgetting that vanilla extract is…brown. So now I have some off-white brownies that will probably not be all that tasty.

Ah, well. I still want this for Christmas.

And it turned out looking like cornbread

Got some caramelization off of all the sugar. The flavor is pretty weak – all you really taste is the sugar. Considering the white chocolate is nothing but sugar and palm oil, this isn’t really that surprising.

It would actually make a fairly decent cake layer – I used bread flour and baking powder, so there’s some chemical leavening going on. Using whole eggs and covering with a fruit-based spread would make it work nicely.

He doesn't stand a chance

at the pro level.

This is based on what, exactly?

Only leading the nation in completion percentage? Having the right height and weight for a QB? Making smart throws and not turning the ball over? Last I checked, those were extremely important tools for a QB.

He doesn't have to do squat.

They have three running backs that would start on just about any team in the country. 3 years from now you can say, yep you were right, he didn’t amount to anything in the NFL.

Did you go to any of their games this year?

I went to four of them. San Jose State. Arizona State. Indiana. Northwestern.

Not exactly cream of the crop teams, but he was outstanding in them. He didn’t turn the ball over in ANY of those games.

Against Ohio State, Tolzien put together an incredible game. He led the game-winning drive against Iowa in Iowa City, a frantic venue at even the worst of times.

You are a homer man,

he isn’t good enough for the next level. And yes, I was at 2 of their games.

So ****ing WHAT if I'm a homer?

I at least recognize that Tolzien put together an amazing season.

he did have a good season, when did I ever say he didn’t?

I would say he has a good chance to be a late round pick.

6 or 7th, maybe a USRFA. He has some qualities needed to perform at the next level. My concern is pure arm strength. He reminds me of a Chad Pennington with a better arm and more mobile. But to be a starter in the NFL, you need to have a big arm.

by Bush League All Star on Nov 29, 2010 10:47 PM CST up reply actions

He's going to go higher, IMO.

Not first or second round, but probably third and later.

He does have a good arm. His TD strikes on Saturday were a thing of beauty.

he just won’t amount to anything.

You base this on...what?

Wisconsin has never had a QB like Scott Tolzien.

And

at the next level, Tolzien is almost certain to have at least one good running back. That’s the system he plays best in.

He can beat you with his arm if he has to. Scott Tolzien is not be Joe Flacco, or even Chad Henne, but he’s a solid QB who makes good decisions in the face of a rush.

If you are right, and somehow

he turns into a successful NFL starter.I will buy you a 6 pack of Old Milwaukee.

For what it's worth, I hope I'm right.

Tolzien would be a substantial upgrade over Brett Favre.

Before you start laughing, think about how good the Vikings would be with a QB who values NOT making mistakes, who values his running game as much if not more than his arm, and who manages to keep a secondary on its heels with crisp passing all game long.

It would if the ground doesn't turn into mush.

That Bears game made me want to vomit at how quick the field turned into feces.

by Bush League All Star on Nov 29, 2010 10:42 PM CST up reply actions

No doubt in my mind that that was intentional.

It’s a bad field generally, but it was a complete mess this weekend, for the first time this year, just in time for Michael Vick to play in the mud.

I agree with you.

I couldn’t believe at how many receivers, backs, w/e were just falling over and slipping on that embarrassment of a field.

Why couldn't they play at Wrigley, instead?

Oh, yeah, that’s right…

They used to play a lot of football at Wrigley

Before they added the expensive CBOE seats, of course. Guess no one thought about the 10-15 yards worth of foul territory those removed. Oops.

I'm pretty sure it was designed to do that

Can’t the league say something about that? We keep our turf in good shape through at least three quarters. In December. How could that not be intentional?

It was intentional and

th NFL can’t do anything about it. I work in Chicago and even their homers on AM were calling shenanigans on the debacle. It was explained by an NFL official that the only thing they can control is what is scheduled on gamedays.

Wasn't the first time and won't be the last time.

I’m pretty sure we pulled the same stunt a couple of times when Holmgren and Wolf were running the show. I’d have done the same thing if I thought I could get away with it.

That field looked like the Capital One and Champs Sports Bowl fields from this year

those were disasters.

Schofield tore his ACL in Senior Bowl practice on a terrible field on Orlando.
