SB Nation Power Rankings: Packers Ranked No. 1 (NFC Subdivision)
I've been reading a number of articles dismissing the NFC, such as this one at Shutdown Corner, so it feels like the NFC is being treated as the junior circuit. In the SB Nation NFL Power Rankings, there are actually four NFC teams in the top 10, with the Green Bay Packers ranked at No. 4 overall. Here's what Joel Thorman had to say:
Going into the Meadowlands and shutting out the Jets puts the Packers atop our power rankings for NFC teams. That was impressive anyway you cut it.
The Packers next opponent, the Cowboys, are ranked No. 30 (still ahead of the Bills!) with the comment "all hope is lost."

Let's beat the cowboys
Let’s have a nice win at home, keep everyone healthy and give them the following week to rest. Come out of the bye week ready to take the second half of the season by storm. This is a tough schedule and the bye week couldn’t come at a better time. This team has the potential, to be 5-3 and know that all 3 losses came at our own mistakes, we have what it takes to go deep into the playoffs.
not with these injuries we dont
Oz on Swish HR celeb: "That's the way he is. Good for him, enjoy it. I wish he could do it for me, he was a very horseshit player for me.''
Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen it.
I couldn’t be happier with the way things are going. This team thrives on adversity, and gets soft with sucess.
I think we go to the Superbowl. 9-7 regular season, though.

Things are looking up a bit
but I still have concerns about our offense. Things still aren’t clicking. They did during the first half of the Vikings game so I hope that MM sits down and looks at that and then sits down with Rodgers and shows him that film and says WE have to do this and continue to do it until teams take it away. We need this bye, but we need a win over the Cowboys even more than we need the bye! Momentum is HUGE!
You should have no problem beating Dallas....

I think this is the absolute wrong attitude to take about this game
We need to treat Dallas as a team that has the potential to score 35 points on offense and force turnovers on defense. After getting embarrassed by Jacksonville, I don’t think it would be a shock for Dallas to come out guns blazing and score a quick 14 in the first quarter, they have that kind of offensive talent.
I really feel like if the team goes into the game thinking Dallas is a push-over, we lose. Much better to prepare like a talented team is going to give you everything you can handle and be wrong than to prepare like they’re going to lay over and die and be wrong.
Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"
Agree.
The Packers shouldn’t be defeating themselves in the conference, this Cowboys game is as important as any other.
Personally, the power rankings never mean much to me. Only thing I care about is good play and seeing them do what it takes to lock up a playoff berth.
"Show me a good loser, and I'll show you a loser." - Vince Lombardi
...is completing 61% of his passes and has 3 TD through ~1.5 games
Yes he has 4 INTs, but 3 of those bounced off of receivers’ hands. If your argument is that Dallas doesn’t have a chance because of Jon Kitna, then you just proved my point.
Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"
Yup…Kitna is going to do JUST fine as long as he’s upright. He’s got a good arm and crazy talented targets. Kitna is a former 4000 yd QB and would easily be one again in Dallas if needed.
read this coming from a former coach of Kitna's
Kitna is great between the 20’s… He can move the ball and put up big stats, but inside the 20’s he can’t get the ball in the end zone! He can’t seal the deal…
Is he dangerous as a QB? Depends… He can move the ball but can’t seem to score!
You've been Stroh'd!!!
This is the story of the Dallas O for the last couple of years.
They put up plenty of yards, but not enough points. Part of the reason is our D doesn’t get many take aways and the O always has a long field and partly because we suck in the red zone.
Lock n Load
Agreed!!!
Cannot take Dallazz lightly! Must put them away early and take away any fire they come in with… Score 2x’s in the first qtr and take the life out of them early! IF they stay in the game till halftime they will keep the intensity up and make it more difficult than we want!!!
You've been Stroh'd!!!
Also, its not the wrong attitude in my opinion.... you need to be confident to have any chance of doing anything in the playoffs
I did not say it would be a cake walk, but there would be absolutely zero excuse to loose to a Dallas team that has completely folded, rolled over and died, whatever you want to say. They dont have Romo, their coach blows…. If they can loose to an imploding MN Vikings, the Pack should win… If your not confident they can win against a 1-6 team, you should be very concerned when they have to play Atlanta or NO in January. I think the Pack had their wake-up calls 3-5 weeks ago when the lost those two games in overtime to marginal teams.
by supertrooper15 on Nov 3, 2010 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions
First of all
saying we should have “no problem beating Dallas” is pretty much the equivalent to saying it’s a cake walk IMO. I never stated that I didn’t think we could win against a 1-6 team, I think the Packers could beat anyone in the league, but I’d also never guarantee that they could beat any team.
And as far as needing “to be confident to have any chance of doing anything in the playoffs”, I think the far more important thing is to constantly be giving 100%, something that teams tend not to do when they overlook an opponent.
It’s attitudes like “You should have no trouble beating Dallas” that make this week a classic trap game before a bye.
Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"
BUT lets not confuse the FANS being confident with the TEAM being confident. Us being overconfident doesn’t affect the outcome of the game. I highly doubt the Packers will go into that game on too high of a horse after a game where they only put up 9 pts and looked terrible on offense.

There is no correlation
between the fans being overconfident, and how the team plays!

At the risk of understating things,
I tend to agree with Stroh more often than not, and his manner of delivery has never really bothered me.
Stroh is not afraid to be, as I recently stated in another thread, blunt with the truth, and such people often come across to others as richards, and as the ‘bad guy’.
As for the exclamation points, not all sites give you the luxury of using boldface, among other means, for added emphasis, as this site does.
I’ve been encountering Stroh around other such sites for about four years, now, and understand that once you have developed the habit of using caps and e-points, for lack of any other available means for adding emphasis, it may be easier to simply continue doing so than to break that habit and develope a new one.
Or, that may simply be his preference.
Recently, Stroh expressed his sentiments about how the constant calling of attention to his e-point usage is getting old and wearing thin.
I said at the top that I agree with him more often than not, and I see his point on this issue, as well! :)

I guess I don’t then…if that means the outcome of the game is affected because one fan is overconfident in his team. I think Karma is overused as an excuse for things these days…

momentum aint shit, dont feed us that fairy tale
Oz on Swish HR celeb: "That's the way he is. Good for him, enjoy it. I wish he could do it for me, he was a very horseshit player for me.''
That's too strong
Momentum is hard to quantify, and there isn’t a 1 to 1 correspondence between momentum and performance (obviously, otherwise win streaks would never end once they’d begun), but you can’t tell me that teams don’t get on rolls or that you can’t get a sense of when certain teams are going to have let-down games.
It’s not all about Xs and Os, or about which team has more talent. I mean, sure, momentum is kind of a mystery, but to say it “ain’t shit” or that it’s a “fairy tale”… Talk about a knee-jerk reaction. Put a couple exclamation points on there and you could be Strohman. Use your words, Mungo.
by Curly Lambeau on Nov 3, 2010 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions
I’d say momentum definitely plays a part in success. Once you get things going, confidence sky rockets, which usually results in better play all around. Seemed like we built quite a bit of momentum in our last 8 games last season but then had a huge let down come playoff time.
I don’t know whether momentum is a good thing or not for this team. If we do rip of a 3-4 game win streak and finish the season hot (like last year), everybody will be calling us a favorite in the playoffs, which I wouldn’t like. We never live up to our expectations, ever. I’ve seen you say this a few times and couldn’t agree more.

Yep
Banks had us ranked outside the top third, and I couldn’t have been happier. But then I saw the Cowboys dead last, and I was like “oh! …dear. That’s not good.”

Think we're overrated
We should probably be swapped with the Saints.
I think we are overrated, but not swapped with the Saints.
Giants, Falcons, Packers, Saints, TB would be my order for the NFC.

Saints before Giants
Or have we forgotten the Giants clubbing at the hands of Indy. NO beating Pittsburgh gives them more street cred in my book.
That’s what makes it hard. Every team has had a WTF game this season in the NFC. The Saints are the hardest to judge in my opinion. Losses to the Cardinals (starting a UDFA at Qb) and the Browns are just bad. And even in some of their wins they’ve been relatively lucky to squeak by with a win (49ers and Panthers). But then they come out of no where and look like world beaters against the Steelers (who I think is the best team in football).
We’ve been relatively lucky to sneak by with some wins too. Though, I do find it somewhat comforting that we’re 5-3 despite playing mediocre football in pretty much every game this season (aside from the defense against NYJ). Makes me think if we were to ever figure things out on offense this year, that we could do some real damage.
by packallday555 on Nov 3, 2010 5:11 PM CDT up reply actions
are you forgetting the Saints losses to the Cardinals and Browns? They also BARELY sqeaked by the Panthers and almost every team they have won against (besides the Bucs).
Well, our losses came at the hands of
Redskins, who can’t trust their QB to run the two minute drill
Bears, who has a QB that can’t recall what a two minute drill is
And we barely squeaked by the Lions and Vikings. Not Panthers level of futility but for division games futility doesn’t always play into it.
Until Rodgers proves he is out of his funk and is:
1. On the same page as the receivers
2. Making passes receivers can catch
I don’t think we’re the best team in the NFC.
division games
In our division are always really hard fought, close games… Its just the rivalries to some degree too… Maybe our division, cuz of the length of the rivalries is just a little more competitive, I don’t know. But vs the Bears and vikes especially they are always high emotion close games no matter the records of the teams at the time. LIons are proving to be a difficult team to play. You might Win, but they are playing hard and well, just still a little under talented.
You've been Stroh'd!!!
I am not saying the Packers SHOULD be on top...
Just that the Saints aren’t the team to be up there. They are basically the same team as us…weak running attack. Passing offense hasn’t been what it was last year. QB is making more mistakes than normal. Defense is surprisingly winning and keeping them in games. Both have squeeked a few wins out and lost to teams they shouldn’t have. They are the same team really (I sense Stroh will take objection to that).
I only brought up what I did to illustrate that one big win for the SAints doesn’t make them the best in the division especially coming off such recent losses to the two teams I mentioned.
No objection...
And really would give the edge right now to Saints… Better recievers all together w/ Finley out, OL similar, maybe slight edge to Saints, RB will be better when healthy… We’re stuck w/ BJack for the season. They have higher potential on offense when healthy, whick they will soon.
You've been Stroh'd!!!
Giants and Falcons
Then us and then the Saints. I’m really not buying on the Saints this year. Too up and down. Sure they can beat the Steelers, but then they get manhandled by Cleveland. CLEVELAND….really the Presidents of the United States of America got it all wrong (at least this year) Cleveland does not rock.

Timely post
I actually came to APC to talk about the recent power rankings. I was looking at SI’s, though.
Don Banks actually has the Cowboys dead last, even behind the Bills. He cites the effort with which the Bills are playing, and the total lack of effort shown by Dallas lately. I personally think this stuff (i.e. the psychology of where teams are in their season) matters to games all the time, more often than people think. But this week it’s even moreso. Ordinarily, you’d be able to say “ah, NFL players and coaches don’t read this stuff.” But, if there’s one guy among the NFL powers-that-be who DOES pay attention to it… it would definitely be Mr. Jerry Jones. He is going to see his Cowboys ranked dead last due to lack of heart, and he’s going to read the comparisons starting up between this team and the one that went 1-15 his first year there, and it is going to Light. A. Fire. under his ace. Wade is going to get called into the office or taken behind the woodshed or whatever metaphor you want to use, and… Look out in Big D if they don’t win impressively this week.
So, while the rankings were fair when the sportswriters wrote them, I think it spells big trouble for us this week. If we play like we did against the Jets (limiting penalties, turnovers, and other mistakes while capitalizing on every opportunity), we’ll be fine. But if we down, we’ll be 5-4.
…which will be fine. We’ll make the playoffs in any event, and I always welcome “wake up calls” for this particular team.
Before the Dallas game last year GB was having problems.
I said Dallas better watch out for the wounded Tiger. This year Dallas is having huge problems, so GB better watch out for the wounded pussy cat.
Lock n Load
Take them out of it early!
Cannot take Dallazz lightly! Put them away early and take away any fire they come in with… Score 2x’s in the first qtr and take the life out of them early! IF they stay in the game till halftime they will keep the intensity up and make it more difficult than we want!!!
You've been Stroh'd!!!
If you get ahead of Dallas by 10-14 early,
they will roll over and die. On the other hand, if Dallas lights you up early they might come out of their funk. At least for one game, but Dallas doesn’t beat GB at home much. Looks like Dallas is dead meat this year, so I’ll root for the Pack after this game to win the NFC. Class organization and class fans, good luck after Sunday night.
Lock n Load
I still can’t believe the Cowboys are where they are right now. I didn’t buy into them as a SB favorite, BUT I did buy into them as a division winner and playoff contender. This season is really shocking. Maybe its for the best though, Phillips should have been on the road a couple years ago in my book. I thought he was brought in as a placeholder until their OC was ready to take over. I guess that just didn’t go as planned though??
Not many people saw it comong.
The only one I know of was NFL Outsider. They said Dallas would be last in the NFL east back in July. We all thought they were crazy, but it looks like they were the one that got it right. They said Dallas would be 8-8, looks like they missed on that. I think Dallas wins 3-5 games if they’re lucky.

I got a feeling they shit the bed sunday nite
The Boys wake up fueled by special teams play
and JJones rage……..DezBryant could somebody please tackle this guy?

and holds the ball,giving
the rush ample time to pummel him..cause everybody knows
we can’t/won/t run the ball….
JJones drops a TD pass and MCrosby
misses a 47 yarder game over…
Boys 27 Pack 24
on to the bye…………………
If they lose to the cowgirls...
They don’t deserve to win the NFC North, or make the playoffs for that matter.

Got to say this post takes guts
You know forget the fact that the Packers recently beat the Vikings.
Forget the fact that the normally move savy Vikings have made at least three terrible personnel decisions this year alone.
Forget the fact that they are surrounded by one distraction after another.
Forget the fact that the coach may get fired any day…
Really the Vikings are a team in full blown implosion and under performing at every level. Seriously, name me one area or even position on the Vikings that is not under performing for his talent level. An please, no AP. He’s under performing too. You can’t tell me that on 4th and 1 on the goal line you don’t expect AP to punch it in every time. If he really is the best back in the league, let alone one of the greats in the history of the NFL, he needs to make the play.
So yeah, to come in here and say that when your team is in such disarray…that takes a pair….or just plain ignorance.
