Packer Notes: Montgomery Gone, Harris or Bigby Set To Return, Finley Has Surgery, and Driver Is Out

Photo

In a minor roster move, the Green Bay Packers announced the release of DE Michael Montgomery. While the veteran had spent five seasons with the Packers, he was just re-signed a couple weeks ago after he spent training camp with the Vikings. It was a signing brought on by the waive of injuries, but the acquisition of NT Howard Green and the return of DE Cullen Jenkins have returned a little depth to the defensive line. Montgomery was a useful player in the old 4-3 defense, but he was never a good fit in their 3-4 scheme.

The release of Montgomery opens up a roster spot for either CB Al Harris or SS Atari Bigby to return next Sunday. According to Jason Wilde, it's not clear who's going to claim that roster spot. A couple weeks ago it looked as if Harris was closer to returning, but Bigby seemed closer last week. Mike McCarthy said they have until after the Cowboys game to make roster decisions on Harris, Bigby, and RB James Starks.

The 2010 season is over for him no matter how his recovery goes, but TE Jermichael Finley told Jason Wilde that he had emergency surgery for an infection last week. Doctors put a central line in his chest and it won't be removed for another month and a half. He's going through a rough patch right now. Stay healthy and get better for 2011.

In an interview with Bill Michaels, WR Donald Driver said he would not play on Sunday. They don't need all hands on deck for a demoralized Cowboys team, but his absence doesn't help an offense that is trying to get back on track. Set your fantasy roster accordingly.

Return of The Dreads

I think GB should activate Harris this week since Peprah is playing pretty well. Shield ain’t bad either, but hes no Al Harris n doesn’t have that physicality that Harris has. Then I say cut Mcdonald since he has been pretty much useless this year anyways to activate Atari. Im not sure about Starks, i say they just try to put him on the PS since he hasn’t proven anything n keep Nance since hes been learning the system for a while now. Im worried about Donald Driver though, he never misses games n always has a catch but now hes been shutout for the past 2 games which is not good. I hope he can get 100% soon.

I dont think Driver should have played the past 2 weeks anyway,

he was obviously injured, and just plain ineffective. Let him get healthy here in the 3 weeks with the bye coming up so he is healthy and ready to go for the 2nd half of the season

No kidding..he wasnt really part of the scheme as you could tell

Starks on the PS? you can wave bye to him real fast as soon as you do that!

by TrevorR on Nov 3, 2010 10:10 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure if that's even allowed

with players that have been put on the PUP. Anyone have any information about that?

You would have to waive him

and he’d have to clear waivers just like anyone else going on the PS… Can’t put him there directly from PUP.

Oh yeah…good point…forgot about that they have to clear waivers first too! Yeah REALLY not going to happen.

by TrevorR on Nov 3, 2010 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Or they can just transfer him to IR iirc.

then they can keep him around for next year without risking losing him.

"I agree but dont agree"

by juggernaut400 on Nov 3, 2010 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Yup…that is the more likely option. The point is there is NO way he goes on the PS.

by TrevorR on Nov 3, 2010 1:57 PM CDT up reply actions

More likely than releasing him to try to put him on PS.

Still think he goes on the 53 man… Find out soon.

yeah…that is what I was saying. I think he’ll make the roster too.

by TrevorR on Nov 4, 2010 9:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Why is this taking so dadgum long,

there are multiple players on this roster that are cut table to make room for Atari. I mean really your gonna tell me that Atari isnt better than at least one guy on this roster…comon now, make the move already!

If he’s not ready to contribute you need guys who can be on the field…if for nothing else, for ST. They are doing it the right way.

by TrevorR on Nov 3, 2010 10:11 AM CDT up reply actions

They haven't been practicing and aren't in game shape!

And during the season, its hard to find enough reps for all the players on the team, much less find them for someone who isn’t in game shape and needs practice reps to get in game shape… Kinda a catch-22… Reps need to go to the starters to get and keep them sharp and get ready for the games. PUP guys haven’t practiced in months and need reps to get in game shape and up to speed.

And I disagree about McDonald… I like him and would love to see him around next year! Though he will be among the first released to make room.

wrong man

Atari and Al have been working out, PUP means they can’t be on the field doing reps with the rest of the team, it doesn’t mean they can’t be running, lifting, doing whatever rehab and conditioning drills they can. Obviously, the medical staff says they’re healthy, I’m sure they have been working out. Getting the plays back down is what takes time, not getting back in shape, I’m sure.

by biggun33 on Nov 3, 2010 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Working out is NOT game shape!!

Usually takes 2 or 3 weeks to get in game shape from just conditioning! Just no way to simulate game conditions, other than practice, and even thats not the same as game shape! Game shape is much faster and includes some contact which can’t even be duplicated much in practice during the season.

Former S and C coach… Think I can speak on the subject w/ a little more certainty that you, no insult intended…

Finley infection...

Just read the article on NFP about “Jermichael Finley required second surgery for infection.”
Realize that the level of inflammation associated with this (surgery center caused) infection is very dangerous and potentially damaging to a joint. Just hope and pray that the miniscus completely survived. This is a scary and was a life-threatening complication.
Brady did ok after his joint infection, but it was not as bad as Finley’s infection.

by docg on Nov 3, 2010 12:12 PM CDT reply actions

Yeah I saw that one too…NOT good. Whats even worse is that he talked about a mysterious staph infection floating around the packers locker room…I hope there isn’t some kind of an issue like Cleveland had a couple years ago.

by TrevorR on Nov 3, 2010 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Locker room strep and MRSA infections do not end up in body joints

Would bet the doctor planted that seed in Finley’s head to hide his own liability.

by docg on Nov 3, 2010 3:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Read an article that the Packers sterilize all equipment often if not every day!

Not likely to have been lockerroom related if the surgery was a week after his last practice or game! Gotta be on the surgeon/hospital, IMO…

Hope it doesn’t complicate his recovery severely!!!

Don't they typically do surgeries at Packer's facilities?

I usually see Reggie McKenzie (sp?) stated as performing operations on Packer players.

Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"

by GoGregGo on Nov 3, 2010 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

No they would do the operatios at a hospital.

Which hospital is dependent on the type of surgery. Operating rooms are set up for types on surgery. Heart operations wouldn’t be done in a surgical room set up for knees reconstructions… Much different equipment needed.

I believe its against the law to perform most operations outside hospitals… Minor ones can be done in Dr offices, but not many.

you missed your sarcasm tag I think…

How much per game?

Maybe we could get Randy Moss to fill in for Donald this week. He’s in game shape, he’s not doing anything, he could get in the car and drive the 5 or so hours to Green Bay. Maybe we could even keep him for 3 weeks and he could wear Green and Gold when we play the Viqueers in a couple of weeks. I’m just sayin’….

by biggun33 on Nov 3, 2010 12:18 PM CDT reply actions

For the ever living last time

This team does not need Randy Moss, even if we had Kapinos playing WR

by Danwood on Nov 3, 2010 12:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Nope...

Its a run after catch… He has the ball secured in his arm… If it were his sliiiiiide, he would hold it extended away from his body… LOL

Good point

He should teach that to James Jones
