Is wonderful on special teams, where he is the master of his domain, at least he has that on Ahmad Carroll!

While I wouldn't have voted for him

I would’ve liked to see Jarrett Bush on the list… he did pretty well

With that said… I opted to go w/ CM3 because… well… it’s CM3

I went with Matthews,

because of the all-around game that he played;
all the different ways that he made plays.

Wood

For the same reason… he made plays blitzing, in coverage, vs Run… And Wood made the play that got Matthews the TD.

You've been Stroh'd!!!

by Strohman on Nov 7, 2010 11:42 PM CST up reply actions

Cumulative effects

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think that the performance of both last year’s and this year’s DPOY were enabled last night by Shields stepping up his game over the last few weeks. Shields playing effectively in cover allows Woodson to blitz from the slot-receiver position, which in turn lessens the pressure on CMIII. Stacking the right side looked so easy last night, but is it likely Capers does it that frequently if Shields struggles in coverage as the nickel?

Granted Shields gave up the TD, but it was a good play for Dallas. Shields isn’t perfect, but I had to vote for him for opening up the defence’s playbook.

by GinSlinger on Nov 8, 2010 8:38 AM CST up reply actions

Well Shields wasn’t here last year… But yeah, your right…. Wood being in the slot only happens if the outside CB are playing well… last year was Harris and Williams, this year its Williams and Shields. Wood made a living last year being the slot CB!!!

by Strohman on Nov 8, 2010 1:41 PM CST up reply actions

Wasn't clear

With my attempt to be clever. I meant last year’s DPOY: Woodson, this year’s Matthews, and that Shields’ play enabled them to both play better last night.

Or maybe the Cowboys.

He's inconsistent

Some games he looks phenominal, while others he simply disapears. If he puts it all together, there is a possibility that he could be a suitable replacement for DD.

by Jabooty on Nov 8, 2010 3:35 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah

he’s got speed and he can make people miss, but very inconsistant. I didn’t forgive him , yet, for that fumble against Chicago. We shoulda won that game. His mistakes today didn’t matter, but what if it’d been a close game?

by bigbill992001 on Nov 8, 2010 6:57 AM CST up reply actions

James Jones

He’s essentially an inconsistent playmaker. When I compare him to Jordy Nelson, Nelson seems to be more reliable, but Jones is the one that gets the big catches, YAC, and all the highlight reals. At the same time, Jones does have fumble-itis and does tend to drop those big catches when we need them. One game he looks great, other games….YIKES! Overall, I’m happy we have him though. Along with Jordy Nelson.

Fumbles

Jones’ fumbles have almost all been against Chicago! THe 2 in one game as a rookie and the one vs Chicago earlier this year. Take those 3 out of his career stats and how many fumbles does he have in his career? Seems like Chicago just has his number…

One was, one wasn't.

From NFL.com:

1-10-CHI 19 (5:04) 4-B.Favre pass short middle to 89-J.Jones to CHI 8 for 11 yards (33-C.Tillman). FUMBLES (33-C.Tillman), RECOVERED by CHI-24-R.Manning at CHI 5. 24-R.Manning pushed ob at CHI 16 for 11 yards (88-B.Franks). CHI-99-D.Walker was injured during the play. His return is Questionable. Green Bay challenged the pass completion ruling, and the play was Upheld. (Timeout #1 at 04:55.)
1-10-CHI 48 (1:24) 4-B.Favre pass short right to 89-J.Jones to CHI 40 for 8 yards (33-C.Tillman). FUMBLES (33-C.Tillman), RECOVERED by CHI-20-A.Archuleta at CHI 38. 20-A.Archuleta to CHI 38 for no gain (89-J.Jones).

Both were in the first quarter, FWIW.

Goes back to the

he needs to develop a rhythm in the game theory.

His fumble this past week was on his first play too… so he’s prone to fumble the ball when he first gets going in a game… but once he gets that out of the way he’s pretty lights out

by Goldenarmadillo4 on Nov 9, 2010 3:42 AM CST up reply actions

Inconsistent

Jones last week said himself his inconsistency has alot to do w/ opportunities. WHen he’s not getting chances (balls thrown to) he is inconsistent… But when thrown to regularly he makes plays. Would you like him to be consistent and catch passes when thrown to little? Of course… But some guys need to active in the game to catch all the balls thrown to him.

That can come off as an excuse, but I can understand it at the same time. My guess is if he’s thrown to as often as DD is he becomes more consistent!

Opportunities

I was about to respond similarly, until I read your post, Stroh, except without referencing Jones saying it (which I wasn’t specifically aware of).
I simply was going to respond with the logic of it.
Lacking the opportunities, a player isn’t very likely to develope any consistancy.
That doesn’t “come across as an excuse” to me,
because I see it as just common-sense logic.
And, until now, Jones has not been getting the opportunities (although he certainly is going to get them now).

Once again

The entire defense plays too well to single out any one player, which makes Capers look like the most valuable non-player. The offense, on the other hand, finally looked like we thought they would this year. While you could make an argument for Jones, Jackson, or even Bulaga, I have to go with Rodgers. He looked like the player we all hoped he would be this year.

And it’s good to have him back (to form). Go Packers!

or the MVC

Cris Collinsworth kept saying last night that Capers should be a head coaching candidate. I’ve thought that too, but is it likely he gets a third shot? Or, is it possible he’s found a team he likes and would like to build his legacy Dick LeBeau-style, being the coordinator through different head coaches and basically being the heart and soul of the team (if not the face of the team, like so many head coaches).

Hopefully the Packers can sign him to a long deal. There is no coaching salary cap so I would hope they’re willing to spend whatever they need to keep him.

Capers

I would be finee giving him a long term deal, but most asst coaches are on one year deals. Do you know if he signed a multi year deal w/ GB in the first place?

Don’t know, but my guess is Capers is done looking for a HC job. If a GREAT HC job fell in his lap, he might take it… But I don’t think he is too worried about being a HC any more!

by Strohman on Nov 8, 2010 1:38 PM CST up reply actions

Don't know his contract status

He is 60 years old, though, which might mean he isn’t looking to be a head coach anymore (hopefully). Just hope he doesn’t go to Minnesota – it might bring back Favre for another year!

What about Trgovac? Is there any chance the Packers can keep him around?

Hard to say...

From what I know/heard he was tired of being a coordinator and wanted/needed a break from it. He might want to become a D Coordinator again. He doesn’t seem like HC material. Like him as DL coach though!

by Strohman on Nov 8, 2010 1:47 PM CST up reply actions

He can probably make just as much money being a DC these days with his history and his current success. Why go into something you’ve already failed at twice just because. I am with you, I don’t think Capers is going to go after HC jobs anymore and at his age, I doubt many teams are going to give him a real shot.

So I noticed someone called out a Cowboys fan for not being classy....

Apparently, the Kardashian sisters only date champions.

Khloe’s with Lamar (Lakers), Kim was with Reggie Bush (Saints), but she dumped Austin. Think she saw the cowgirls’ season going down like this?

and

If they lose to the cowgirls…

They don’t deserve to win the NFC North, or make the playoffs for that matter.

and

There’s one word to describe the current state of the vikunts…

FAIL.

and

And brent’s record day helped the viqueens…

Is this considered a classy Packers fan??

by Dewkee on Nov 7, 2010 11:38 PM CST reply actions

The “vikunts” one was classless. The Kardashian one was just stupid. But the other ones? Everyone who says “Cowgirls” or “Viqueens” is “classless”?

I believe what Packers fans were saying about classless Cowboy fans were the ones talking about Clay Matthews and steroids – an accusation based on a bogus pre-draft report that he had tested positive, when in fact he hadn’t. Apparently, because he has been a successful pass rusher, he must be on steroids.

There was a whole discussion about how he must be on steroids, including people talking about how his face looks (which, if you look at his family, he looks exactly like all of them.) Talking about how he is muscular (even though he isn’t even close to being one of the most ripped guys in the league).

Voted Matthews

Aaron Rodgers had what should be a typical outing for him. Brandon Jackson wasn’t the leading rusher of the RB’s, even though he did score twice. James Jones had more catches and yards than Jennings, but the also had that fumble early on that was recovered by Jordy. Greg Jennings had less catches and yards than Jones. Charles Woodson had a great game, but no INT. Sam Shields played great too and had an INT, but he also gave up the only TD for Dallas. Tramon Williams let the ball go out near the goal line on a punt return. So… Clay Matthews gets my vote for having a completely dominate game by a defender!

by Darrell L on Nov 7, 2010 11:41 PM CST reply actions

Last year he was near averaging that...

… in quite a few games. So yeah, it was what SHOULD be a typical game for him.

by Darrell L on Nov 7, 2010 11:46 PM CST up reply actions

I'm just saying

Saying a 131.5 passer rating should be typical is saying that he should be light years ahead of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game.

He is damn good, and if he is able to continue on his current pace, he certainly could end up in that discussion by the end of his career. But actually expecting that kind of game every week may be a little much. :)

Yes

I think Shields showed very early that the Cowboys wouldn’t find the same weak spots in the secondary that were so easy to find last year (for other teams, not them). Also liked to see him back there returning kicks.

On the TD – I think that’s one that requires a lot of practice to learn to defend. Next year we’ll have to get him to practice defending that against Finley.

So, about Rodgers' QB rating...

Rodgers’ QB rating jumped from 94.9 to 95.8 with that performance (this has been a subpar year for him). He currently is 61 pass attempts from being official for the stat for his career (1500 attempts). If in his next 61 attempts (let’s say the next two games) he puts together a line like:

44 for 61
550 Yards
5 TDs
1 INT

He will officially be the highest rated QB of all time with a rating of 96.83*, topping Steve Young’s career 96.81 rating.

*unless Phillip Rivers keeps it up, since his 4 TD game today actually makes Phillip fucking Rivers the highest rated QB of all time, with a rating of 96.9.

Williams said he was fine after the helmet-to-helmet hit from Collins, then appealed to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell not to fine Collins for the hit. “Commissioner Goodell, don’t fine the guy,” Williams said. “It wasn’t that bad of a deal, he shouldn’t get fined. It was a football play, a football player making a football play. No injury, no harm.”

Wow

Impressive. Hopefully that will talk the Commish down from possibly suspending Collins. Really that’s more of what I’m worried about, that they would make an example of Collins and lower a game suspension down on him for a play where the pad level dropped faster than Collins was expecting.

by PackApologist on Nov 8, 2010 12:31 AM CST up reply actions

Nice by Williams...

I think the hammer is coming on Collins. Plus he’s already on Goodell’s bad side after the incident in Chicago. He got a stern warning for that one.

But hopefully that will sway Emperor Goodell…

by PackFaninFL on Nov 8, 2010 12:33 AM CST up reply actions

He's going to get fined

severely, for that hit, I’d guess 75k. – I just hope he’s not suspended, it was the perfect storm of “defenseless receiver without the ball” and helmet-to-helmet resulting in injury, I’d say there’s a decent chance he’s out for a game.

by Archibaldcrane on Nov 8, 2010 12:35 AM CST up reply actions

Huh…didn’t see that coming. I doubt Goodell gives a HOOT what Williams thinks. He should take note though and start looking at plays for intent. So many of the hits that are drawing fines are just bang bang plays where a guy gets hit by another into him.

by TrevorR on Nov 8, 2010 8:30 AM CST up reply actions

Coley Hit

It will be interesting to see if that hit draws a fine. One replay looks helmet-to-helmet, another looks like a clean shoulder hit. Neither replay looked like a defenseless receiver (which was the call on the field). I suspect that anytime a receiver goes down hard in a play, a flag will be thrown.

The Collins hit looked to be helmet-to-helmet, but unintended, hopefully a fine at the most.

by GinSlinger on Nov 8, 2010 8:40 AM CST up reply actions

Hey I like this Williams guy!

I’m impressed. I don’t think Collins intended to hit him high there, which is hopefully a factor. It certainly should be.

On the Aaron Rodgers run where it looked like he was going to get knocked out of bounds, but didn’t and grabbed a few extra yards, it looked like Terence Newman was trying to go high on Rodgers (he left his feet to jump upwards at Rodgers). Granted, there is a lot of bias in this, but I think Newman’s intent was much worse than what happened on Collins’ play.

He was very classy about the entire thing, however. Was nice to read that. Don’t think we’ll see him going to the Bears to seek revenge.

If he clears waivers aren't we still responsible for that 6M

even if he signs another deal? In that case we’d be paying 6M+ for him. Not too mention there’s a couple teams that are in the playoff hunt and really need secondary help. Listed below in no particular order are who I think the top 3 candidates are

Houston – Still have a WC shot and maybe AFC South if the Colts keep stumbling
49ers – Anyone can win the AFC West
Vikings – The love guys that played for us (Longwell, Sharper, Ferguson, Favre, Javon Walker sort of) and if you ask the DN, they’re one 8 game win streak away from winning the NFC North if the refs don’t keep screwing them

He’s got to fit their system too though. His best play is when he is playing the bump.

Vikings run Tampa Two

so I don’t see him going there. I would have no problem with him going to Houston or even SF and being successful there.

But we all know how much Minny

loves people who used to wear green and gold

That is very possible…

IF he is released

I bet the Queens go after him.

I think the reason Harris is being cut is he is not healthy enough to play

so, other than picking him up to get inside knowledge on the Pack, Harris won’t be able to contribute on the field for any team.

I hope they do. Saves us a LOT of money and honestly I think he’s going to be a liability out there. His skills were already diminishing last year, now you pile on with the injury. I can’t see him really having a huge impact.

Makes sense...

either Pat Lee and Jarrett Bush would have to go, and those too contribute too much on special teams. Al Harris just doesn’t do special teams. He is an older and aging warrior, and with the emergence of Tramon and Sam Shields, it makes sense.

by PackFaninFL on Nov 8, 2010 1:06 AM CST up reply actions

Pat Lee...

a 2nd rounder as well, so potential is there. And although you guys dislike Bush, he can play multiple positions in the secondary and is one of our best special teams players.

I think the VIkings, who are suffering in the secondary, will take a serious look at Harris.

They do like our castoffs

and I don’t mean that w/ ANY disrespect to Harris, but Minny seems to always pickup people that were in Green and Gold at one point. If he’s not ready to play, I don’t know if I see him as the type to go over there just to “stick it to us and Ted”… at least I hope he’s not that kind of guy

by Goldenarmadillo4 on Nov 8, 2010 1:17 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not sure it makes sense

Think of it like this…

Underwood hasn’t really done much so far, his roster spot could be called into question.

Add in that we play MN next and there’s a decent possibility that Collins could be suspended for that game. I know I would feel a lot more comfortable about that if I knew that we could use Woodson in the safety spot and still go Williams, Harris, and Shields at corner.

Really? :(

This isn’t good news. I wish him the best. Couldn’t they have hid him on some IR or something? Don’t really have a clue how that works for the NFL.

by Bush League All Star on Nov 8, 2010 1:07 AM CST up reply actions

I thought

it was either activate them this week or move them to IR… that was the talk w/ Starks and what not… especially if he’s not getting cleared to play.

by Goldenarmadillo4 on Nov 8, 2010 1:12 AM CST up reply actions

Well I don't know how I feel about this

I mean his play was declining before the injury and he was starting to give up big plays or crucial penalties at times. On the other hand… I can’t seem to shake the image of those Dreadlocks flowing after Matty announced, “We want the ball and we’re gonna score” and boy did he ever score.

I think this would be a much harder pill to swallow if Tramon wasn’t playing at such a high level and Sam Shields wasn’t looking really good considering he’s never really played DB before.

But with that said, I feel for Al, he’s been busting his ass to get back and play, it just looks like the body won’t let him and maybe by waiving him, the FO is giving a nod to him and letting him go out and play if he can instead of stuffing him on IR to get a year older

Hey guys...

WE should make a “Thanks for the memories” post for Al Harris. That guys has been AWESOME for us, a real warrior. Hope we do that.

We want the ball and we're going to score!

4 hours 5 minutes? Is that all? Buehrle coulda pitched three CGs and the bottom of the 14th in Houston by then. FTMFYITA! - RWShow

Nah. Should be

Al Harris wants the ball, and he’ll score!

by Darrell L on Nov 8, 2010 2:02 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah

Al Harris is a Founding Father of the Most Dreaded Secondary and I loved the way he played. If you read what he said about the ordeal it seems that he is a classy guy.

We’ll miss you Al! Thanks for the memories!
