Ask PatsPulpit!
Hello there.
This weekend, the Patriots play the Packers in Foxborough.
Here's your opportunity to ask questions or queries of the mostly harmless PatsPulpit bloggers, so knock yourself out.
And as a quick answer to the inevitable question about Tom Brady's hair: Gisele Bundchen finds him particularly attractive with long hair. If a supermodel finds you attractive for any reason, you oblige her: thus, the long hair.
Other questions? Comments? Please rec this so it stays on top for the week.

I’m having a hard time believing we’re even going to give the Pats a game. They’re coming off of two games playing their best football, and we’re coming off our worst game of the season.
Why in the hell is Brady a sponsor for UGG boots too?
They are on a hot streak
The UGG thing…I guess Brady must have gotten an anvil hit on the head…like in those Looney Tunes cartoons; eh.

It'll be hard enough to beat them WITH Rodgers...
No way we could keep pace w/ the Patriots offense having Flynn at QB. Even if our D held NE to 20, we couldn’t beat them.

On a tour of Australia,
The Pope took a few days off to visit the coast for some sightseeing.
He was cruising along the beach in the Pope-mobile when there was a frantic commotion just off shore. A helpless man, wearing an All Black rugby jersey, was struggling frantically to free himself from the jaws of a 25 foot shark. As the Pope watched in horror, a speedboat pulled up with three men wearing Wallabies rugby jerseys.
One quickly fired a harpoon into the sharks side while the other two reached out and pulled the blue semiconscious Kiwi fan from the water. Then, using long clubs, the three beat the shark to death and hauled it into the boat.
Immediately the Pope shouted and summoned them to him.
“I give you my blessing for your brave actions. I heard that there were some bitter hatreds between Australian and NZ rugby fans, but now I have seen with my own eyes that this is not true.”
As the Pope drove off, the harpooner asked his buddies,
“Who was that?”
“It was the Pope” one replied. “He is in direct contact with God and has access to all of God’s wisdom.”
“Well” the harpooner said,
“he may have access to God and his wisdom, but he doesn’t know s**t about shark fishing. Is the bait holding up OK or do we need to get another one?”

An Englishman
Wants to marry an Irish girl and is told he needs to become irish before he can do so. It is a very simple operation where they remove 5% of your brain.
The englishman wakes up after the operation and the doctor comes up to him looking all worried and says “I am terribly sorry, there’s been a mistake, we accidentally removed 50% of your brain instead of 5%!”
The Englishman sits up and simply says “She’ll be right, mate!”

The coach
Hey Obrien, How awesome is it to have a coach that pummels the opposing team into the ground, never lets off and year after year produces the most disciplined team in the NFL? I’m terrified that McCarthy is going to try and out coach Belichick and we both know that’s not going to happen.
So where are the holes in the NE defense? What offensive struggles do they have? I know absolutely nothing about the pats (besides brady being great), so if you could just run down their strengths and weaknesses, that would be awesome.
well
Holes on defense-They are super young. 3 rookie starters, 4 2nd year players (some who never played that many snaps last yr). Tend to play prevent defense in the 4th qtr if the Pats have a big lead…thus the other teams get easy yards and our defense gets ranked no .31 in pass d.
Also….we barely have any pass rush but our team is ranked no 2. in the NFL in Turnover margin (no. 1 in the AFC).
man…its hard to pin down our offensive struggles….so i would say sometimes we go 3& out when we need our team to move the chains (like the Colts and Chargers game). Pass blocking sometimes-our LT Matt Light is far from his prime and often gets beat.

Pat McAfee -Colts punter-"@StampedeBlue I hope your website gets exposed for a complete joke. There’s no reason for you to do that, and its completely ridiculous."
Defensive holes:
The biggest hole I can think of is lack of depth due to injuries. A lot of the role players (Spikes, Wright, Pryor, Wilhite) have been out with injuries or, if you’re Spikes, a suspension. Then, there’s a lot of players (Arrington, McCourty, Chung, Brace, Warren) who are pretty dinged up. This team should be fine, but a couple injuries can really hurt this team.
As for offensive struggles, the team seems to be doing well. They had been struggling on passes where the ball travels 20+ yards down the field, but Brady’s picked up his performance as of late. I’d say the offensive line might be struggling a bit in protection, but that only affects Brady when he’s targeting down field.
by Richard Hill on Dec 13, 2010 12:14 PM CST up reply actions
So where are the holes in the NE defense?
CB. It’s young (starters are a rookie and a second-year who only played 8 games as a rookie special teamer), and thin – two of them are hurt at the moment, although how badly is unknown.
Otherwise, sealing the edge can sometimes be an issue against pass-catching RBs, but you guys are a little thin there. TEs can be a matchup issue sometimes, but again, you’re a bit thin lately. Otherwise trying to confuse and wrong-foot a young secondary, and get the LBs tired by moving them side-to-side chasing underneath WRs.
What offensive struggles do they have?
A bull-rush up the A gaps can work, because the C, Koppen, is ageing and can struggle in physical matchups. The RG, Connolly, was playing LG until a few weeks ago, so he might get wrong-footed if he’s forced to react instinctively. Urlacher got a sack up the middle last game, and Suh got a similar one going through the Guards in the Lions game, so that gives you a general idea based on your Div.
I’d imagine your outside pass-rushers could beat the OTs (especially Light) in single-matchups, but Belichick will know this, too, and put 2TE sets out a lot of the time. I’d expect Alge Crumpler to shadow Clay Matthews at all times.
Strengths – they can beat you in a bunch of different ways. If they need to run it, they’ll put up their big TEs in a 2 or 3 TE set and punch it through you. If they need to pass into zone coverage, they can throw to a 6’7, 260lb, deceptively quick Gronkowski. If the Packers break out man-coverage, they’ll likely split TE/WR Aaron Hernandez into the slot and get him to beat up on nickelbacks one-on-one. Welker and/or Branch are quick and shifty, and one or both of them always seem to be open with Brady throwing. They both have a psychic link to Brady – Branch had 8 receptions for 151 yards and a TD, Welker had 8 receptions for 115 yards against the Bears, which says a lot.
Woodhead’s a wildcard – he’s a 5’7, 200lb scatback who can play slot WR pretty well. He’s a matchup issue because he runs a 4.3 40 – he’s very quick. Take your eyes off him, and he’s gone. He took a shovel-pass (more like a forward RB toss) 50 yards against his old employers, the Jets, on MNF two weeks ago.
Best part of all – Tom Brady. Someone’s open, somewhere, and Tom knows where it is. He hasn’t thrown a pick for his last 260 attempts or something ridiculous, and he’s thrown 20 TDs in the meantime. Oh, and his last interception was a Hail Mary at the end of regulation against the Ravens as it is, so it didn’t mean a lot at the time.

God this sucks
We need a miracle in this game. The only thing through everything you said where I feel we have a legit chance at doing is NT BJ Raji pushing your Center around. Granted, if he does that consistently, that would be HUGE. I can’t see him dominating the Center on every play though. Clay is still playing injured. Our 2nd best pass rusher Cullen Jenkins is out. ROLB’s Brady Poppinga, Brad Jones, and Frank Zombo are all on injured. Poppinga and Jones are on IR. Maybe someone can fill me in with who take Zombo’s spot. I don’t even know who Clay’s backup is at this point anymore. So I don’t think we’ll get much pressure off the edge. The only way we do anything to generate a pass rush is to attack with BJ Raji and our MLB’s. Occasionally mixing it with Clay of course.
Hopefully Rodgers is alright and he can pick on your Secondary. I am pretty confident he’ll score some points against the Pats. I just question how much our D can contain Tom Brady and the Pats offense.

BJ Raji would be an interesting matchup on Koppen and the Guards...
The Pats have Raji’s college DT partner-in-crime occasionally starting on the D-line, Ron Brace. Raji was more of the penetrator of the two, and Brace has been playing fairly well this year, so I’d rate Raji’s chances to put heat on Koppen. Brady’s pretty good at getting rid of it when he sees pressure, especially if it’s under his nose at NT, so the Packers would probably have to press Welker and Branch well on the line to disrupt Brady entirely.
During the season I picked this as one of the tighter games, because the Packers have got some matchups that would be in their favour. With the injuries, though, all of the particular players I was worried about were either out or nullified to some extent. It’s a shame both from a spectacle point of view and because I like the Pack, but I guess that’s football.

You need need to relax Jabooty. You have a very good packers team, and a hell of a defense. This might be THE toughest game for the pats since the colts.

Which team is better: 2007 Patriots or 2010 Patriots?
No real question, I know the Patriots well. I have Brady, Woodhead, Welker, Hernandez, and Law Firm in my fantasy league. Needless to say I’ve been doing pretty well.
And for that reason
I expect us to lose in blowout fashion
well
the 2007 team was basically a NFL verision of the College spread team…usually 3 or 4 WR 1TE and 1 rb….throw it deep to intermediate area and outscore the other team.
We also didn’t have a decent run game…so basically it was just pass, pass, pass.
Now the 2010 team is more balanced…they can run the ball w. Ben Jarvis Green Ellis aka the Law Firm, uses tons of Play action fake and more TE’s-Gronk or Hernandez.
Also the passes from the 2010 team is usually short and intermediate routes. Also The LAw firm is ranked, acc to FO, the 4th best RB in the DVOA rankings.
According to Football Outsiders, the 2010 team DVOA is less than 3% than the 2007 team. So far according to them, we have passed the 2004 Colts team in scoring and best offensive team ever and we are right behind the 2007 Patriots team.

2007 has lots of bad memories, though.
The aging starters on defense really got covered up by the fact the offense was scoring the way it was. Those three near-losses (Ravens, Eagles, and Giants wk 17) all came in the final stretch.

Is there any chance the Pats ease off the gas now that they've clinched a playoff berth?
My guess is “no way”, but one can hope. I’ve never been a NE fan, but I have enormous respect for both Brady and Belichick – hard not to admire their determination, stamina and capabilities.
GB will be playing for their postseason lives and NE will be playing to keep the ball rolling, as I see it. But is there a chance they ease up? Would this be at all Belichick-ian? (doesn’t sound right)
And what is the best way to slow Brady? Is there a way to slow him? I watched the Cleveland game and it seemed like the best thing the Browns did was keep him off the field and prevent him from developing any sort of rhythm with the offense. Is there any other way to contain him? If not, I suspect another NE blowout.

No Belichick doesn't believe in easing off.
He’s spent all season trying to get them to play 60 minutes of football.
I can see him saying 35 minutes is good enough today guys, let them win.

Nope, no resting of starters or anything Bill Polian-like
They didn’t ease up last year even after they’d more-or-less sealed a playoff berth, and it actually bit them on he butt – Wes Welker went down on IR the last regular season game. However, I doubt that’s enough to convince him to break the habit of a lifetime.
Belichick’s mantra is ‘do your job’. The players get it drilled into them, and it comes out as second-nature – they repeat it like their life depends on it. Their jobs certainly do – Moss’s week 5 trade proved that. I suspect that holds no matter what, and the starters’ job is to start, not rest in week 17 or whenever. He might rest players if they’re ahead and fairly safe, but he won’t mess with starters or with the overall chemistry of the team.
And what is the best way to slow Brady?
Press coverage to disrupt timing (NE passing scheme is timing-oriented), a good 3- or 4-man pass-rush (any blitz, Brady will eat you by passing to a small guy where the pass-rusher should be), and LBs covering the underneath checkdowns very well. You basically need all three to win – 2007 Super Bowl was the best example.

He's quickly become a Pats fan favourite
The guy had it rough. He’d been a Jet (ouch) and was picked up to replace Kevin Faulk, who’s as good as Tom Brady’s personal pocket security guard and bouncer as he is as a RB or pass-catching back.
At first, it was “can he receive”, but then he scampered in for a 30-something TD reception when lined up in the slot. Then it was “can he run” but then he scored a TD or two and run the shoes off some opposition D players. Then it was “can he pass-protect like Faulk”, and he popped Ray Lewis in the mouth and sat him on his butt in an A-gap blitz.
After that, he was gold. Unsurprisingly, the Pats have signed him to a contract extension already – signed through 2012:
He’s slated to earn $550,000 in 2011 and $700,000 in 2012, along with play-time incentives worth a possible $575,000 next year and a possible $600,000 in 2012.

I’ve got balls but I’ve got some common sense too. If Rodgers is out, we lose by 20+. If he’s in, the OL better not play anything like they did against Detroit, or else we’re not scoring anymore than 10, maybe 17 points.
I don’t even want to think about their offense. They’re balanced and have a lot of weapons for Brady to throw too. I think our secondary will be able to cover but I’m worried about them exploiting the linebackers with Gronkowski, Hernandez, and Woodhead. I also worry that Capers will go into his rush 4, drop 7 style defense because of how worried he always seems to be about blitzing elite Qb’s.
by packallday555 on Dec 15, 2010 12:32 PM CST up reply actions
Well you do have one advantage with Capers
He knows our DB’s pretty well and is VERY familiar with how Brady works. Only issue would be that he knows the Moss offense and not the Moss-less offense.
Im not worried about their offense as much as Im worried about ours, so you have a good point there
our defense has not failed us yet this year, and I dont think they will again. But Rodgers definetly needs to play and the oline needs to cut out that crap. If we put together some 10 minute drives (with screen plays!) then we can win.

Screen plays could work
The Pats 3-4 has bigger guys than some, because they’re a 2-gap and about engaging blockers rather than penetrating past them. Get the big guys moving the wrong direction, they’re not fast enough to recover. Also, the LBs at the moment occasionally get washed out in edge-sealing because there’s only one out of the normal 3 OLB rotation who’s of the ideal size.

I also worry that Capers will go into his rush 4, drop 7 style defense because of how worried he always seems to be about blitzing elite Qb’s.
That’s probably the best way to go about it, as long as the 4-man rush can actually get in and rattle Brady. Also, disguising the coverage that the 7 dropping back are actually in is paramount, or else Brady will just pick out seams pre-snap and make sure he’s running big TEs up them.

Hmm
If the 4-man isn’t at 100%, making Brady check for Mathews and Woodson constantly is likely the second-best bet. Make him worry about finding them, and he might miss someone else.

That is one thing I worry about is YAC
Our secondary is pretty solid but the Packers have probably the most physical receivers in the league. Our secondary better work on tackling this week to avoid the long YAC.
Not sure if you saw our game last week or not but our offense was no where to be found, which has been a problem all season long. One game, we explode for 30+, and then next we score like 17 points, and struggle to even put together a string of first downs.
If it’s one of those good weeks, and Rodgers plays, then yeah, I think we have a good chance. But if not, no way.

BTW, for those APC regulars who have PatsPulpit accounts...
we have a little caption contest running right now. Best one liner (or multi-liner) wins. Go rec crazy on us; we’ve had some of these Caption Contests that had 4 way ties between 2 recs. Are we droll or what?

An interesting note on draft tactics.. and what we got for your selection of Clay Matthews and a 6th rounder
There seems to be some trepidation here
It’s not that bad.
The key is to score more points than the Patriots. That’s been the formula for success against them so far. One way to do that is to go up to Tom Brady and take the ball from him and run faster than everyone who is giving chase.
For some reason, the Patriots feel the need to score first. I’m not a psychologist, so I don’t know what causes that, but scoring first against them could be very helpful. Then again, if you don’t, the Pats might be placated scoring first, and begin practicing for Buffalo – they like to practice.
Stats are totally misleading when playing the Pats. It doesn’t really matter what rank defense they play, and TOP means nothing to them – it’s how many times they take the field. 35% of their drives end in a TD.
Anything can happen. Get first downs and keep Brady off the field. It might be tempting to test our secondary, but a shootout with the Pats is risky. The Pats D looks worse on paper than it is because they give up a lot of garbage yards playing prevent – their last two games being the exception.
They have so many weapons that it’s kind of creepy, and they have good prep and good smarts as force multipliers. Take all that away from them by keeping them off the field. This game is not going to be about the Packer’s D, but about its ability to control the game with its O.
Shoving you around is part of the game. Quit crying.
Looks like Matt Flynn will probably start.
Honestly, I would prefer that since Rodgers has not practiced all week and may still be a shaken up
I don’t know what will happen in this game but I can not wait to watch it! I want to see if/how the Packers bounce back from last week’s travishamockery and how they will do against a team that just dominating right now.

Better he has the rest than he gets knocked around again
I’d hate for Rodgers to miss significant time just because he rushed back a week early.

They'd be pretty small by today's standards
According to a 2006 ESPN article, “The average weight in the NFL has grown by 10 percent since 1985 to a current average of 248 pounds. The heaviest position, offensive tackle, went from 281 pounds two decades ago to 318 pounds.”
Go back to the 1960s and they were even smaller. Granted the Packers 1960s O-line were the best of the decade, they’re probably still quite a bit smaller than the average O-line now. Put them up against 330+lbers in Wilfork, Ron Brace and Gerard Warren… bit of a mismatch.

You had a 2XX lb running back in Jim Brown who was of a similar size to the guys blocking for him.
And Brown was bigger than the linebackers trying to tackle him. No wonder he was so good.
