Sunday Afternoon Thread: Patriots and Bears vs. Snow

If you still have the stomach to watch football after the Green Bay Packers defeat in Detroit, my guess is that you're probably watching the Patriots and Bears through the snow flakes. But maybe not. It's a big slate with six afternoon games.

Yeah, I don’t see that changing much either. You can’t drop back and throw it 40 times, so the Bears offense is pretty much screwed. And the Patriots have a really strong offensive line.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

This is actually very representative of weather in Boston this time of year, too.

We tend to get several big “nor’easter” storms during winter in the northeast. The storms come over the Midwest, cross the Appalachians, and then get impregnated with tropical moisture and then just pound the northeast.

Worst storm I remember well was Valentine’s Day, 2007. A Nor’easter dumped 25 inches of snow in Vermont on one day, and some areas got as much as four feet.

This is as much Patriots weather as it is Bears weather.

I can't believe we're going to lose the division to the freaking Bears.

They’ve got one and done written all over them come playoff time. They’re solid on D (the Pats are doing this to everyone right now) and they can run the ball, play good special teams, but there isn’t anything they do that really scares you. Peppers can destroy a game plan, but outside of that there isn’t anyone on the team you lose sleep over. GB has three guys like that, even now, but they can’t keep it together to run the Bears down.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Dec 12, 2010 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

Reminds you the 2001 season

We were 12-4, and the Bears were 13-3, and they lost their first playoff game to the Eagles.

The Bears have Peppers and Urlacher on D

We have…more than that. The trick for them has been adapting their game plans to their deficiencies. We’re still expecting Quarless to somehow turn into Finley.

Pickens? Raji?

How about Collins? Tramon? Their defense gets props for keeping opposing teams’ scores down. Our defense gets props for “bend-don’t-break” and allowing Rodgers to get in there and work his magic often enough. There’s a bit of a difference…

Tiebreakers with TB

I think the first tiebreaker is conference record.
They are 6-3 in NFC (presumably 8-4).
We are currently 6-4 in NFC (if we win the last 2 games, then 8-4).
Then if you look at common games as the next tiebreaker: ATL, WAS, DET, SF

Our record in those games would be 2-3, their’s 3-2

My sophomore year of high school, our track coach got sick of hearing our senior star call everyone a loser. He told him, “There are no losers here – there are competitors!” So for the rest of the season, this guy went around calling everybody “competitor”. “Way to get out of the blocks, you fuckin; competitor!”

I learned a lot from that guy…

Man, I just can’t stop thinking about our game earlier. Why couldn’t we just line up in a goaline and sneak the ball on 3rd, hopefully getting the 1st down. And if we didn’t get it, one would have to assume that you’d at least make up SOME ground, which would presumably allow you to sneak for the 1st again on 4th.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 5:52 PM CST reply actions

Oops, I suppose I should specify that I’m talking about our last possession.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 5:52 PM CST up reply actions

And if you really wanted to try the deep shot in the hopes of catching the Lions off guard...

… why not try it on 2nd or 3rd and 1 when you still had a shot at getting the 1st down and prolonging the game if the gamble didn’t work.

That’s what I find most troubling. When you’re losing in the NFL, especially late, you always take the play that prolongs the game. McCarthy doesn’t seem to know that.

I really want to watch those last two offensive plays again

I just can’t believe that those receivers were the only options on the play.

They weren't

The 4th down play was designed and called from the sideline. No bitching at the players about that one…

That play was designed to go to Jennings from the snap

It was an obvious attempt to “catch the defense napping” as well as “give the inexperienced QB some confidence”. Didn’t work either way – blame MM for that POS

Agreed. He threw it as soon as he could tell there was no safety over the top, which tells me Jennings had to be the target there.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 6:03 PM CST up reply actions

Even if there was other guys open, I’m pretty positive Jennings was probably the #1 option there. I’m sure if there was no safety help over the top, Flynn was told to go to Jennings. And in this case, Jennings even had a step on the guy.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 6:02 PM CST up reply actions

In that case

I disagree with the play call, but hell. Jennings did actually have a step on the guy so if Rodgers is the QB there, it probably works. I don’t know, I guess I think it’s a shared failure on the play.

Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"

by GoGregGo on Dec 12, 2010 6:04 PM CST up reply actions

Not a bad call if Rodgers is in but do you really go for it all with Flynn? I don’t know I guess.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 6:06 PM CST up reply actions

That's the thing

You’ve got a touch pass for a long TD – do you think your big, dumb LSU product is gonna be able to do that without practice snaps?

by Clutch16 on Dec 12, 2010 6:06 PM CST up reply actions

Honestly, I've got to wonder if that had something to do with MM's thinking

By that I mean, is MM sitting there thinking, I’ve got maybe a 50% chance that Flynn can make this throw, but if we stay with short stuff, it’s that many more passes that Flynn can f*ck up on. It’s no guarantee that the Packers would score if they pick up that first down.

Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"

by GoGregGo on Dec 12, 2010 6:08 PM CST up reply actions

I thought about this too, and bet that, that’s probably the case but he had actually been doing alright on that drive (and really the whole time he was in). I don’t know, it just seemed like McCarthy was calling things as if we had much, much less time left in the game.

There’s no reason we shouldn’t get a first down after a 9 yard gain on 1st down, and I think us not doing so had a lot to do with McCarthy’s play calling.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 6:14 PM CST up reply actions

If it was a test

It was a crappy one. If Flynn were better than Rodgers, he’d be starting.

by Clutch16 on Dec 12, 2010 6:16 PM CST up reply actions

Oh come on

You don’t have to be “better than Rodgers” to complete that pass. You don’t even have to be “better than Matt Hasselbeck” to complete that pass. Was it a risk to give Flynn the option to throw that? Yes, but if MM didn’t think he had at least an even chance of completing it he wouldn’t call it.

Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"

by GoGregGo on Dec 12, 2010 6:25 PM CST up reply actions

That was very truncated

Mostly due to deleted ranting. You’re right – it’s not a fair comparison. However, I don’t think you can expect a guy who has had no success in anything other than slants and screens to all of a sudden put that ball in a perfect spot on 4th down on the road. If MM was using that particular play call to give him valuable insight about his backup QB, then it proves that he is measuring talent based upon unrealistic yardsticks.

McCarthy said that he called it from the sideline.

What an idiot move. Even if it worked it would have been stupid on 4th and 1.

Gotta admire the honesty

Does this mean that we are gonna blame our missing the playoffs on injuries?

Agreed

We were asleep the entire game. It was more annoying than anything else. I couldn’t get excited about the game because it was obvious our guys couldn’t, either.

I’m left wondering if that was a by-product of the Bears game, though. We made it obvious then that our young team could be baited into committing multiple penalties on the road, so we’re now adopting a stoic attitude to division road games.

It seemed like we did one every second down for a loss of two every series.

Yep. Seems like we did any time we were in a 2nd and short situation (1-4 yards) or any time we were in 2nd and long.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly. I just hated that 2nd down play call. That draw play to Jackson almost never nets a positive gain (hell, he’s lucky to even get back to the line of scrimmage). Why not just keep letting Flynn hit the underneath throws like he had done the last three plays?

It’s just another example of McCarthy trying to “trick” the defense. It’s just so frustrating.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 5:56 PM CST up reply actions

It was like he was calling plays as if we only had 30-40 seconds left with no time outs. Ah man, I should probably just stop. I know I’m no NFL coach, and that it’s easy for me to sit at home and rip McCarthy a good one but some of the things he does just seem so wrong to me.

Interior linemen...

… GB really needs to address it’s O-line. Wells is a warrior, but he’s small, aging and he struggles against big, athletic DTs. Colledge is a bad starter, and Spitz, who I had hope for as a potential answer between the tackles, was so bad today he got benched after Colledge went down. We need an LT or RT (wherever Bulaga doesn’t stick), a Guard (like right now; or even a year ago) and a Center in the next 18 months or so (or sooner if it’s an upgrade). The only guys I wouldn’t be looking to replace in the next two years are Sitton and Bulaga.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Dec 12, 2010 6:35 PM CST reply actions

Only 'cuz they're young

Sitton has more experience than Bulaga, but they’re both still young. Putting them on the same side versus an oversized D-Line is gonna hurt.

I’d look for a slower refresh than anything else – get another guard high in the draft and move Sitton over to the other side. Then a center the next year and a tackle the next. That O-Line will be something else in 2013-17, man…

You may be right

Plug our biggest O-Line problems into that equation wherever you want, but I’m still seeing Wells as our C for at least another year.

Yeah, I don’t see how we’re going to be able to find 3 new, quality guys (quality being the key word there). I agree on drafting a C/OG early. I’m starting to think that’s more of a need than OLB or OT. If we could draft one early, and then pick up a OG in FA our OL could be much better. I’m not sure what’ll be available for interior guys in FA, but if there is a guy or two worth picking up, I really, really hope Thompson will sign him. It could really, really help the offense out.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 7:03 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with that...

… but they’ve got to make a move at guard and T this offseason. The tackle probably won’t need to start next year, but if the Guard doesn’t, it’s going to be hard to turn that ground game around next year.
