Sunday Night Open Thread: Eagles at Cowboys

This could be a good game. The Cowboys have won 3 of their last 4, and the Eagles have won 4 of their last 5. They've both beaten the Giants and Colts in recent weeks.

I'd say it could help the Packers playoff chances if the Cowboys won, but right now I need to be talked down off the ledge after watching the Packers offense against the Lions defense. Mike McCarthy did have a very good summary during his press conference of what went wrong:

Offensively, they were in our backfield all day, we lost the battle up front. We had the two big turnovers, particularly in the first quarter, potential points on the board and three points, that’s not cutting it.

I still don't get the draw of fantasy football

Or fantasy sports in any regard. I can understand if you’re really, really into a sport that you may feel as though you can assemble a winning team, but in these days of information overload, how can you be sure that you’ve got better info than your opponent? Truthfully, sports gambling seems both more honest and a better investment of resources.

That's the thing

I don’t really care about football players if they’re not playing for the Packers or against the Packers. I guess I’m old-school in that regard, but at this point, Dez Bryant and Megatron are equal in my mind – I don’t have to worry about Sam Shields covering either of them for another 9 months, so I just don’t care about them anymore.

YMMV.

I tried FF once and hated it… I was sick of rooting for GB to win but Terrell Owens (when he was w/ Philly) to get 4 TDs against us or Randy Moss to get 3 TD’s but the Vikings lose or whatever it was.

I want GB to win and the Bears/Vikings to lose… I don’t care who looks good or bad in the wins or losses as long as those things happen lol

OK - you're being way too pessimistic in this

Our O-Line was awful, no doubt there, but a ‘F’ grade with nothing but contempt intimates they did nothing. Our QBs did manage to complete some passes here and there. The rookie Quarless doesn’t deserve a tongue-lashing for attempting to cover up the ball and having it ripped out on a great defensive effort, and giving Rodgers a D when he was knocked out of the game while he was gaining a 1st down (which were scarce) an effort play? That’s just wrong.

I can understand being disappointed, but this piece smacks of stamping your feet and screaming about everything bad that happened during the game, only 6+ hours later. Take a breath, a day, watch a replay and see what else you can come up with.

I'm not screaming and stamping my feet at all.

I’m just saying that Rodgers simply did not play well. Those sacks were ugly; and our offensive line play…was hideous. A D doesn’t describe how badly they played.

The majority of my problems with the piece

Is that you are giving no credit whatsoever to the Lions. Those sacks can be blamed on our line, but they were executed by a Lions’ D which obviously came in with a plan that they executed more than adequately. Overload the strong side vs. Sitton and Bulaga? Check. Use that pressure to create pressure elsewhere? Done.

I’m more willing to tip my cap to their good game-planning than you are, I guess, but haranguing the players for a loss like this gives too much credence to their flat play and too little credence to the coaching effort which led to it.

He only had 46 yards passing

before being knocked out and wasn’t really moving the ball… it was NOT a good game for him.

The line was horrible… our QB who played less then 1 1/2 of the game lead us in rushing… thats not all on our backs who have looked really good at times this year.

Actually, before I rewrite the whole thing… I wrote a long comment to it giving my analysis if you care lol

I honestly don't know

I’d like to think if Aaron’s in there we win… but Matt Flynn did more in the first 2 drives of the 2nd half and then Aaron did in the entire 1st half of the game

by Goldenarmadillo4 on Dec 12, 2010 8:20 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly

But he did it in a way which was tailored to his style – dump-offs, designed roll-outs, screens, and slants. That’s the package you put in for any rookie QB. Where he fell down wa when the coaching staff expected him to be something more.

Which is why I think people are being really hard on MM in this case

Yeah MM made mistakes… but he came up w/ a good game plan for Flynn during the half and worked w/ what he had… he tried to keep it to a point where Flynn would be comfortable and moderately successful… He only asked Matt to do more when he had to to win the game at the end

by Goldenarmadillo4 on Dec 12, 2010 8:24 PM CST up reply actions

I also think Flynn

was really hindered by the complete lack of any type of run game to fall back on

by Goldenarmadillo4 on Dec 12, 2010 8:27 PM CST up reply actions

I’m sure we would have. How many times have we started slow in the 1st half and then picked it up later. One would have had to think that sooner or later we start to get going. Plus, Rodgers moves around much better in the pocket than Flynn does, which would have neutralized their pass rush a bit.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 8:23 PM CST up reply actions

I'd like to think we win w/ Aaron

but we don’t know for sure… There was nothing in the first half to give us any glimmer of hope that we were turning things around (I know we usually look good in the 2nd half… but we can’t guarantee that)… and Aaron not being there is 100% on Aaron… if you’re going to take off as a QB, you need to learn to slide and avoid taking stupid hits like he did

I think the results would have been evident had he done so

but because he DIDN’T, the Packers lost the game.

The Packers have not been blown out in ANY of their losses this year, which is an indication that they don’t just cave. The Packers fought in the 2nd half, but it just wasn’t enough.

And this is something you should take away from this loss

At 4 points, this was our worst loss of the year. Do I think the Pats will better that next week? Maybe, but the fact remains that we still have not lost a game by more than 4 points all season. If there’s anything good to take away from today’s effort, it’s that we can still hang in games, even when we haven’t brought our ‘A’ game.

You're right.

And this has been added to the end of the piece:

End of the Day: The Packers seemed listless from the opening snap. The last time I saw a team like that was 2009 Wisconsin vs. Northwestern (which was even MORE of a heartbreaker), when NU showed up and Wisconsin didn’t. The Lions simply played much, much better than the Packers today. The Packers had their share of opportunities but didn’t convert in the clutch. The Lions did as well, and converted when they needed to in order to snap their long losing streak.

I'll agree with you here

And I believe that we can deny Brady the areas where he has feasted the last three weeks. We play better man than any of his last three opponents, and we rush better, too. It’s going to take a concerted effort by the refs to ignore blatant holding calls in order to neutralize our rush vs. their handsy line. Do I expect the refs to be up to that challenge? Of course I do. Do I expect us to still draw a couple of incidental roughing penalties? You bet. Do I expect us to stop because of it? Not on your life.

What's going to be most important in that game

is jamming Deion Branch. The Patriots 3-deep at WR is unreal; Branch has been nothing short of amazing back in New England’s offensive system, Tate is a good deep threat and a solid WR, and Welker is murder from the slot.

Jamming Branch is critical; he cannot be allowed to get open deep downfield on the defense. I think Tramon is the best 1-on-1 guy for him. Taking Wes out of the game is going to be difficult if not impossible. I could see the Packers line up in a 3-3-5 for this game (basically their 3-4 defensive look minus an ILB with an extra CB) to have 1 CB per WR. Tight end wise, the Patriots are loaded. All three of their main options are receiving threats, but Crumpler is the best blocker.

On top of all that, the Patriots have a good running game.

Trouble with that game plan

Is that you give Brady an additional weak guy to throw against. Which extra DB do you want to see in that package? Underwood? Lee? Quite honestly, I’d rather see Bishop in coverage on those ticky-tack slant plays that the Pats adore.

I don't know how much

Des has been in coverage… but it seems like good TEs murder our LBs when we match them up

Ideally, Atari is back next week (he was practicing this week right?) and then we can put Peprah and Nick at Safety and then use Tramon, Woody and Sam as our 3 CBs and bring in Atari if we need 6 DBs

by Goldenarmadillo4 on Dec 12, 2010 8:48 PM CST up reply actions

I think Green Bay's LBs

are a good matchup with the Pats RBs.

Both teams run the same base defenses (3-4). But it’s completely clear that the Packers need to have some sort of ground game if they’re going to have a chance at this game, what happened today is NOT going to work against New England. Stat-wise, they’re grossly undervalued, but they have a good young defense that’s gelling into a solid unit.

I understand where you're coming from though.

The line play was bad, but it showed some good signs in the 2nd half (when the offensive line finally got its act together). But we couldn’t consistently run the ball at all today and Aaron Rodgers as your leading rusher is a bad, bad sign.

Offense was horribad

Flynn was decent for a backup, but not much he can do with the O-line playing like it was and no running game at all… anytime you’re QB leads you in rushing (unless you have Michael Vick) you’re in bad shape.

I think the defense looked better then it really was because of the low score… we play this bend but don’t break style of D way to much and let them shred us until the red-zone then get serious and hold them to a FG… but the more we do that, the more likely we are to give up TDs and not FGs (like we did today)… but the Passing D was decent because Stanton was inaccurate and the Lions dropped a few balls… and the run defense got shredded for almost 200 yards so I think it was pretty bad but some timely turnovers and poor Lion Offense made it look better

by Goldenarmadillo4 on Dec 12, 2010 8:37 PM CST up reply actions

Seems like this is the Capers plan too much. We’re best when we’re dialing up the pressure, and now we have actually have the secondary to do so (with Shields being 100x better then Bush/Underwood last season in nickel and even Peprah appearing to be much more assignment sure then Bigby). Seems like all we really did in terms of pressure today was Woodson off the slot (a few times), and then a couple of ILB stunts. The only problem is, offenses always seem to be ready for Woodson off the slot now, and our ILB’s seem to slow to get home.

We brought Collins one time, and he got there pretty much right away. I think we need to dial up the pressure more, and bring more corner and safety blitzes. Especially against an inexperienced Qb, who has accuracy issues.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 8:45 PM CST up reply actions

Bingo

Where have the safety blitzes been this year? When we bring it, it works. And it’s been a MM strength for the last 3 years. Why abandon that now? Injuries?

I don’t know, I’ve been wondering the same thing. We here so much about how LaBeau and Capers schemes are so related but LaBeau’s seems so much different then ours. He’s always bring a safety, and overloading the line. It just doesn’t seem like Capers does that all that much.

Maybe it’s injuries but to me, there’s no drop off between Bishop and Barnett or Peprah and Bigby.

I guess it’s just confusing to me. Our defense is by far at its best when we’re flying around, bringing pressure. And even if that means occasionally giving up a big play, I’m more than ok with it because it will also mean occasionally forcing TOs.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 8:56 PM CST up reply actions

I think a lot of it has to do

with Pitt having probably the best LB corp in the league… Don’t get me wrong, and I love our LBs but they don’t seem to have that same pop the Steeler LBs do. Also, we’re not the fastest defense in the league and LeBeau’s scheme are very dependent on speed.

It’s easier to rush multiple people when they all get to the QB fast enough to prevent the throw… if we blitz and can’t get there fast enough… there’s probably someone open ready to make a big play

by Goldenarmadillo4 on Dec 12, 2010 9:00 PM CST up reply actions

Remember

the Steeler LBs got absolutely EMBARRASSED by the Patriots at home. AT HOME. That game wasn’t at Gillette, the Patriots went to Heinz Field and dominated the Steelers on their homefield offensively and defensively.

Yeah, Woodhead is gonna be a nightmare.

It’s gonna be interesting to see Capers game plan for Brady. I’m gonna guess it’ll be a lot like those for Favre last season. Super conservative, drop 7-8. I see us getting absolutely shredded to be totally honest.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 9:08 PM CST up reply actions

That'd be the Dom standard

High quality QB is the rush 3 and hope you can cover long enough… which is the opposite of how I think it should be.

I think we should pester the good QB’s to make their throws off a bit and cover the WR of the mediocre QBs and make them make the throw to beat us

by Goldenarmadillo4 on Dec 12, 2010 9:12 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, probably. Too me, that’s why I dislike Hawk so much. He’s just too slow, and even when he has a free path to the Qb (on the blitz) he can’t ever seem to get there.

You can get that speed onto the field though, especially in a nickel or dime packages. And if a guy like Lee/Underwood is a big liability, then bring him on the blitz like the Steelers do with Gay.

I don’t know, I just think Capers goes into ultra-conservative mode far too much.

by packallday555 on Dec 12, 2010 9:06 PM CST up reply actions

I would agree that he does go conservative far too often

I think I’ve complained w/ you several times about it in fact… the best remembrance I have is the Miami game where we rushed 3 all game until the last drive of the 4th Q and then we blitzed almost every play and shut them down.

When he dials up heat it usually works… I think he’s a bit hesitant to a lot though because he doesn’t want to leave Sam exposed or he doesn’t have enough faith in our DBs to stay w/ their guy long enough

by Goldenarmadillo4 on Dec 12, 2010 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

I’m sure that’s it but at some point you just have to be willing to take that risk. You know Williams will run with his guy, as well as Woodson, and Shields has been awfully solid this season too. And it’s not like he’s gotta do it every time or something either. It’d just be nice to mix it up as opposed to just essentially playing prevent play after play.

Illegal contact

that has to be the equivalent of defensive offsides. 5 yards, NO auto first down, that just rewards receivers for whining/acting and punishes an entire defense unfairly.

It interferes with the passing game

Which the NFL sees as its bread and butter. The auto-first-down is telling a DB not to mess with the revenue stream.

Completely disagree

I’m old-school. Three yards and a cloud of dust, baby. If you’re gonna send one of your blockers twenty yards downfield, you can expect some resentment. That leads to hitting and that’s all good by me.

I also believe that the head-slap should be reinstated as legal. Ta hell with it – if you’re gonna allow some things on the field that would land you in jail at any other time, might as well make it fun, right?
