Around SBN: Lakers Should Trade Andrew Bynum So He Doesn't Go To Waste

Sunday Open Thread - Late Afternoon

ATLANTA - NOVEMBER 28: Michael Turner #33 of the Atlanta Falcons rushes for a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers at Georgia Dome on November 28 2010 in Atlanta Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

The only late NFC game is the Falcons at the Seahawks. While the Falcons have a two game cushion for the top seed, they're only one game ahead of the Saints for the division title. Because of the NFC West wasteland, the Seahawks are still in the playoff race. It's an important game for both teams.

I should have drafted a different QB, though, seeing as how Aaron likes to take hits…

HOLYCRAPHOLYCRAPHOLYCRAP

Went from being the worst possible outcome for the morning games, to “Holy shit, how did they just do that!” Four touchdowns in under 8 minutes. Saving Andy Reid’s ass for that ridiculous non-challenge

By the way, on that challenge – anyone who criticizes McCarthy’s challenges – look at that one. Good God, I was ready to throw the remote through the TV.

And with the Detroit win, Green Bay will still be in control of their playoff destiny even with a loss tonight.

This has just been perfect!

I think it helps b/c now if the Packers beat the Giants next week..

They will be tied record wise and will own the tie breaker.. In this case they control there own destiny more than hoping for a Eagles loss.

by mkcubs21 on Dec 19, 2010 3:33 PM CST up reply actions

We play the Giants next week

so we can essentially gain 2 games on them by winning them since it gives us a win and them a loss plus gives us the tie breaker over them

by Goldenarmadillo4 on Dec 19, 2010 3:33 PM CST up reply actions

Well, no matter what we have to beat the Giants

And if Tampa Bay ends up at 10-6 (which seems less likely now), we need the Giants tied with us there. (Due to the tiebreakers they’d have to use – way too complicated for me to understand). If it was just us and TB, or Tampa, Green Bay, and Philly at 10-6, we would not get the wild card.

And with both those losses, it is completely in our hands now. No matter what anyone else does, if Green Bay wins those last two games, they are in.

by Packers3485 on Dec 19, 2010 3:34 PM CST up reply actions

No matter what happens tonight, we win the last two and we’re in? And if MN wins, and we win the last two (regardless of the most likely loss tonight) we win the north? Not sure, any help with this…

by spkeeper on Dec 19, 2010 3:37 PM CST reply actions

I believe so – because the Bears conference record would be worse with a loss to Minnesota, which I believe would be the tiebreaker we’d have to use at that point.

by Packers3485 on Dec 19, 2010 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

The Bears currently have 3 conference losses, the Packers four

If Minnesota wins tomorrow, that would tie us up in that tiebreaker. So wins in the last two games would give the Packers the win with best conference record.

Saints only 11/2 games ahead of us with 3 games to go for us, just saying anything can happen.
Remaining schedules
Tampa 8-6 vs Seattle, at New Orleans
Giants 9-5 at Green Bay, at Washington
Green Bay 8-5 at New England, vs Giants, vs Chicago
Chicago 9-4 at Minnesota, vs Jets, at Green bay
New Orleans 10-4 at Atlanta, vs Tampa Bay
Hell look what happened today. The Giants, Bears, and Tampa look like the best bets.

Another interesting thing...

If we beat NE and CHI loses tomorrow night than all will be necessary is beating the bears in Week 17.

Obviously I’d like a win tonight, but I think it’s pretty clear that the last two games are much more important because of tiebreakers and all. Hopefully ARod can get healthy by next Sunday afternoon, any indication of whether this is possible?

I've been out of touch.

How much did the Eagles win hurt GB? Seems to me that if they beat the Giants (which they’d have to do anyway), it’s basically a push. Giants are one game ahead still if we lose tonight, but we pass them (on tie-breakers) if we win next week.

And with the Lions winning, we’re still tied with Tampa even with a loss tonight (which to appears to be inevitable). All in all, not a bad afternoon unless I’m missing something. It’d be nice if Minnesota beats Chicago, but that’s not going to happen. Otherwise it looks to me like the NFC did a nice job of rendering a likely GB loss tonight nearly a moot point (not quite, but close).

Am I wrong? What am I missing?

by Clutch16 on Dec 19, 2010 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

You're missing the tie-breaker scenarios with Tampa

(For this post, I am working under the assumption that the Packers lose tonight, then win the last two games)

If both the Packers and Bucs end the season at 10-6, Green Bay does not get the wild card. If Green Bay, Philly, and Tampa Bay end up at 10-6, Green Bay does not get the wild card (I forget if it is the Eagles or Bucs in this scenario). If Green Bay, Tampa Bay, and the Giants end up at 10-6, Green Bay gets the wild card. Try it out on the ESPN Playoff Machine. The deciding tie-breaker seems to be “Strength of Schedule.”

So the Giants loss here is the best thing that could happen to us (assuming that they don’t blow it in Week 17 and lose to the Redskins to drop to 9-7).

Long story short, a Giants win today would have meant that the Packers would have needed serious help over the last two weeks. Now, it is entirely in the Packers hands. Win the last two and you’re in, lose one of them and you’re out.

by Packers3485 on Dec 19, 2010 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

Actually, my suggestion to "try it out" on the Playoff Machine is useless now.

Because, with the loss to Detroit, Tampa can’t beat us out for the spot unless they win out and the Packers lose two of these last three. But before that game, if you gave them the win over Detroit and had them lose to New Orleans at the end, they would get in under the scenarios I listed in the post above.

by Packers3485 on Dec 19, 2010 4:29 PM CST up reply actions

And another mistake I made

the tiebreaker would have been “Strength of Victory”, not “strength of schedule”

by Packers3485 on Dec 19, 2010 4:30 PM CST up reply actions

Margin of Victory, right?

by OBrienSchofieldismyHero on Dec 19, 2010 4:41 PM CST up reply actions

No, it had something to do with the records of the teams you beat?

I think that’s what it was. And then the next tiebreaker after that is the records of all the teams you played, not just the ones you beat.

by Packers3485 on Dec 19, 2010 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, just found a definition

“part of the NFL’s tiebreaking procedure, strength of victory is figured by calculating the combined winning percentage of the opponents a team has beaten.

by Packers3485 on Dec 19, 2010 4:44 PM CST up reply actions

I think in the math for that one playoff percentage site...

It factors in that we already beat the Eagles and have not yet played the Giants.

The tie-breaker vs. Tampa will be huge now that they lost. They have two conference matchups coming, and I don’t think they can beat the Saints.

by Bush League All Star on Dec 19, 2010 4:29 PM CST up reply actions

True...

… but if we lose to the Giants we were probably screwed anyway.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Dec 19, 2010 4:57 PM CST up reply actions

Yep.

Need to win the last 2 out of 3 to have a chance. Beating the Giants and the Bears would likely increase those chances. Those two games are of more importance than this game tonight. I mean if we win tonight, it will be a nice boost.

by Bush League All Star on Dec 19, 2010 5:02 PM CST up reply actions

I've been going over every possible scenario on the playoff machine

Unless they have something messed up in their calculations for tiebreakers (and I haven’t seen anything so far), it’s not simply a “chance” if we win the last two. If we can beat the Giants and Bears, we are in, no question. That Tampa Bay loss seems to have erased any chance that they could win the tiebreaker at 10-6. And other than Tampa, the only other team in contention for that wild-card spot is New York.

Green Bay no longer needs any help to get into the playoffs. It is completely in their hands now. Win those two, and you are in. The only question left at that point would be which seed.

Under this scenario, the Packers, Giants, Bucs and Saints would all be at 10-6, and New Orleans would be eliminated in the first round of tie-breakers because they would have a worse record than Tampa Bay against common opponents. Green Bay would be the 5th seed, and the Giants would beat out Tampa for the 6th.

I wonder how many people, before the noon games, could have imagined a possible (and not all that unreasonable) scenario where the Saints would be out of the playoffs. Crazy.

It was a BS penalty

The WR was coming down into him. That hit is on Sanchez, not the secondary.

That is so crazy...

A Packers win over the Giants next week gets them into the 6-slot.
