Packers Game Ball Recap: Patriots Beat Packers, 31-27
The Green Bay Packers are now 8-6 and have lost all six games by less than 4 points. This one was marked by big plays (an INT returned for a TD and a 71 yard kickoff return by an offensive lineman) and dropped passes (and interceptions) dooming the Packers. In many ways, the Packers dominated the game as they ran 36 more plays than the Patriots and led in time of possession 40:18 to 19:12. With their backup quarterback Matt Flynn leading them against the best team in the NFL on the road.
When looking at the players of the game on offense it's required to start with Flynn. He's not QB Aaron Rodgers, but Rodgers wouldn't have done a whole lot better. WR James Jones was the big name receiver, but he also gave up on the route that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. RB Brandon Jackson ran for 99 yards, but also had a big dropped pass. After Flynn, I'd have to go with FB John Kuhn, who had a couple huge plays as a receiver, and was going airborne every time he touched the ball.
They didn't grab any turnovers, and they couldn't stop the Patriots from scoring a touchdown once in the red zone. But the Packers defense held the Patriots to 4 for 10 on 3rd down, and held their potent offense to only 249 yards of total offense. The big story was how they got after QB Tom Brady with so many injured pass rushers, and with another poor game from LB Clay Matthews as he's still limited by a shin injury. NT B.J. Raji blew up at least three plays all by himself, and LB Desmond Bishop had two of the biggest hits of the game.
And a big lemon for the entire kick coverage on OL Dan Connolly's 71-yard kickoff return. No one player was to blame as they blew lane containment. FB Quinn Johnson seemed to throw the big block against his own teammate to spring Connolly, S Charlie Peprah tried to strip the ball instead of tackling him, and S Atari Bigby took a bad angle as Connolly juked him. Way to blow the good vibes after recovering the surprise onside kickoff on the opening play of the game.

Game Management
So are we going to blame Flynn for the ending of the game (Shouldnt) or MM for the horrible management of the end of the game. If we cant find a way to close out the game then we will never be a high caliber team. Alot of the is MM fault. Let the “you are stupid for wanting MM gone” posts begin.
I kinda agree....
McCarthy and staff really did prepare the team for this game very well. But, you’re right, I can’t help but believe that McCarthy will always lead a good team, but not a champion.
hard to say
I want to blame the end on MM, I do, I’m not a fan of the guy, but he did have some moments in the game last night that I actually was proud of him as a coach. For starters, to have the bawls to call an onside kick on the opening play of the game is the kind of moxy I want in a head coach. For once, the team didn’t look like an wet noodle in the first quarter and we came out swinging, and getting a backup QB ready for on of the biggest games of he season was quite impressive. Whatever he said to our O-line I believe did the trick. You can say that the media did if for MM, maybe, but between us begging for new linemen and Sports Center mentioning how we have maybe he worst unit around, I give some credit to MM. He also won some points for me with his post game speech “I don’t care what you think. We came here to win.” Nice to see him sack up for once. Also gald we stuck to a functioning run game for once, and didn’t try and crazy long throws.
However, I can’t help point out some of the things he did that leave me questioning. Why o God, do we not move Clay around? Once he got some pressure, he got doubled on the right. Why middlessly send him on on right blitz over and over again. The Giants move their great passrushers around all the time. Clay would have far more impact like that. Our special teams also were, well, possibly the worst thing I"ve every seen. Really, a linemen ran 71 yards? NO ONE TACKLED HIM! Idk what we can do to make it better, but something needs to be done. Another tackling issue, after Flynn threw his 1st INT in the first half, how did about half of out offense not be able to tackle him. I understad that in the NFL no one understands how to tackle anymore (WRAP THEM UP DAMNIT!)
Other than that, was nice to see Raji have a great game and Sittion battle one of the best D-linemen in the league to a standstill. Also Kuhn is a beast.
So yes, I would love to sit here and say we should get rid of MM, but after only 5 years, 2 of which must be throw out because of Favre issues and another of implementing his system (I’d even throw out the 2nd year under ROgers for the system implementation, just seems right.) And of course this year with a bazzillion injuries. I’m not quite ready to fully pass judgement on him.

No attacks on MM this week
I was pissed and critical of McCarthy after last weeks game, but he deserves a lot more credit for this weeks performance. A disappointing loss (with too many avoidable mistakes), but an admirable and overall good hard fought team performance.
I was and am proud of the way they played NE.
I still do not believe McCarthy is smart enough to take the team to the top, but he deserves one more year to prove himself and prove us back-seat critics wrong.
Voted Raji but Flynn played a hell of a game too. Props to McCarthy’s game plan, and for getting the guys up to play after that tough loss last week. Don’t think he did a great job managing the end of that game but oh well. Just a really disappointing loss any way you cut it.

Raji for sure
steppin up in the absence of jenkins. And also because finally getting a chance to vote for him. He’s been quietly having a solid season esp. considering all the bodies dropping off the dline.

Solid
Doesn’t begin to describe Raji’s season! He’s been an absolute MAN at NT and when given the chance to just penetrate he’s been stellar (like tonite)! Should be All Pro, IMO…
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
Agreed. All-pro is the perfect way to describe Raji’s season. He’s been an absolute animal. What does he have this season, 5.5 sacks? That’s amazing for a NT.
It was funny to listen to Collinsworth gush about Wilfork all game, despite Raji playing better than him, and having a much tougher matchup then him in Mankins.

He’s definately having a Pro Bowl season. Too bad he plays NT in the 3-4 and the stats will never tell the story of his great season.

Got to give it to Flynn. Great game for a first start, unlucky ending however.
I am definitely more encouraged after this week than last week against Detroit. If Rodgers is healthy, we’ll beat New York and Chicago to make the NFC Playoffs, where I think we can beat any of those teams. But we have to play mistake free, we had to play a perfect game tonight to win, and we almost did.
by ThroughBeingCool on Dec 19, 2010 10:59 PM CST reply actions
Perfect game?
Not even close. Same stupid shit as every other game (summarized pretty well above). This team will NEVER play a game even close to perfect. It just isn’t in them.
Sadly, I agree. Seems like there will always be at least a mistake or two. Whether it’s a big kickoff return after a HUGE Td, or a bad turnover. There’s just always something. It’s ashame to, because in my opinion, we’ve been more, or just as talented as every team we’ve played and lost to this season.

Playoffs?
I believe if the Bears win tonight GB is out of the playoffs regardless of how they finish.
Nope
We’re out of the division… but if we win our last then we’re in pretty good (not guaranteed) but pretty good shape for the 6th seed and a rubber match w/ Chicago

Raji had the best game of the 4
Flynn played well, but did a horrible job of managing the clock on that last drive. Overall, he was pretty impressive for a guy making his first start, but the inability to manage the clock falls mostly on his shoulders. Flynn can make the short pass but his long passing game still needs work.
Kuhn made a few very good plays at important times, but didn’t get the ball enough to earn player of the game.
Bishop played well, but aside from a few big hits he wasn’t great.
But Raji played well the entire game. No criticism of his game, and he made a ton of plays and kept getting in Brady’s face. He shut down the run well, too. And equally important, he wasn’t on the field for Connolly’s big return.
Any word on Collins’ injury?

Agree
Voted Raji too… ANd Flynn just absolutely HAS to know the situation and that he didn’t have time to wait for a play call. Thats on Flynn… He played better than I thought possible, even tho I thought he would play well.
Raji was turned loose by Capers tonite… He wasn’t asked to be a true NT tonite, Capers mostly asked him to get upfield and penetrate into Brady’s face and he definitely did that!!! Game was how I thought the Packers had to play to win… A couple of plays beat us tho… Damn thats a tough loss, but it doesn’t hurt our playoff chances much.
You've been Stroh'd™!!!
you are wrong...
don’t know if you watched the press conference but Flynn did exactly what MM wanted.
no one on the field or sideline knew if it was a first down (refs kinda fu*ked us over) thus waiting for the proper play call.

Would they have kicked onside for the first play if they thought they could match Brady QB-for-QB?
With Rodgers out they knew they had to play like desperate men.

I am sure that Rodgers being out
was a big reason for the opening onside kick. But the Packers didn’t play like desperate men. Otherwise, they would have tried onside kicks every time (maybe they should have with our pathetic kick coverage) and gone for every fourth down. No, the biggest story of this game for the Patriots is that their defense is not ready to win a championship.
Agreed, Capers planned that very well
I’d said Raji would be a threat against the Pats inside linemen, and that’s exactly what he was.

had to go Kuhn
As awesome as Flynn was, Kuhn making plays (literally leaping for 4 first downs) was what made Flynn awesome. His cutbacks were fantastic. Nothing against Flynn, you couldn’t have asked more from Rodgers than what Flynn did.
I was also going to say Raji cause of how big the plays he made were, but in the end I just had to go with an offensive player for this one
Who cares, keep winning and you keep playing.
you win you keep playing, you lose you are done. This makes a team mentally tough or they fold like a deck of cards, so what’s it gonna be?

Hey people
Just wanted to pop over and say good game.
Your Packers showed a hell of a lot of grit and fire; Flynn’s a fine QB and Raji gave Brady as much strife up the middle as I was dreading. Kuhn’s a major headache (and in a good way for Green Bay), and the DBs as threatening as I suspected.
Major props to the coaching staff – they took the ball away from Brady with the onside kicks, and kept it away from the dangerous Pats KRers with the constant squibbing. They did everything possible to make it a battle of the defences, which is a brilliant move on their part.
Good luck for the rest of the season!

I’d be saying the same thing about Patriots fans. However, a Patriots fan just trolled me on Facebook.
Conversation started with him asking me “what I thought a real team looked like” and ended with me debunking nearly everything he said and telling him “to stuff it”. I normally don’t talk like that. He also claimed since he was in the service, he could come onto my profile and talk like that while since I haven’t served, I can’t.

I thought it was the right decision to squib
Brandon Tate ran back two KR touchdowns in the first month of the season, and every ST unit since has been playing him with the kid gloves and kicking it for touchbacks or whatever. I don’t mind the choice to squib, although the execution wasn’t ideal for GB.
At least you didn’t kick a short onside kick and have it returned for a TD like in the Colts game? Hah.

Got to give the Packers credit. They came in to a stadium where Brady was 26-0 and dominated for 59 minutes and 40 seconds. Just the inexperience of your backup QB and some questionable timeouts lost you the game , but Flynn played well. Great defense even with injuries, offense that dominated the time of possession, and gutsy calls for the most part.
Personally I was worried once everyone started proclaiming the Pats were in the Superbowl and were about to blow out the Packers…and I was right to be.
Thanks for the props
Although a lot of folks are still steamed about that last drive, the thing that made it possible was Belichick going no-huddle against our weak nickel package earlier in the 4th quarter. Called DPI on a ball that went out of bounds to set up the Green Bay TD in the first half. I’m cool with that call if it was a ‘holding’ – doesn’t matter where the ball ends up on a hold – but a DPI on an uncatchable ball? Eh.

Two Green Bay WRs lined up to the right, crossing route, S got tangled up and grabbed Jennings. I have no problem with a penalty – but only if it was holding. It wasnt DPI, because that ball was uncatchable. It went at least two yards out of play.

It’s more the principle. Holding was the correct call, but they called DPI. Yet it wasn’t DPI, because that ball was uncatchable.
I guess it’s just like this is the game they choose to showcase, yet they bungle calls on the goal-line.

I'm still wishy washy
The Brewers literally sold their entire Farm Club this offseason. After this season, they may not have a future. It truly is an ALL-IN move. I guess that’s the difference between Doug Melvin and Ted Thompson. It is unlikely you will ever see an act of desperation like this under the TT tenure. Hopefully it pays off for the Brewers. I’m already very much opposed to Melvin’s moves for the most part every offseason, but hopefully this one works out. I did like the Marcum trading though. Literally though, it’s World Series or Bust for the Brewers. They have no Farm Club anymore. Their Top 5 Minor League Prospects are all gone in 1 offseason.

the Sox IIRC have done relatively well against Greinke. And his leaving the AL Central helps the Twins and Tigers too.

Congrats on Theriot
You’ll enjoy him as much as Aaron Miles…
I just want the O-line to play smarter.
The ST to not suck ass and give opponents short field. Finally the run offense woke up and said, “Hey there is a hole! I will just run fast through it!”
The big plays on defense just weren’t there. A lot of opportunities for interceptions and missed them. :/
We got help this week, and I am optimistic about the coming weeks. Just need some players to get healthy (Cullen get healthy, Clay get healthy!) and ST to stop sucking ass.
by Bush League All Star on Dec 19, 2010 11:23 PM CST reply actions

Let’s hope Rodgers will pass all his tests to be able to play next weekend.
It was great that the OL played better but frustrating too because it’s like, where the hell have you guys been all season, you know? Had they shown up against the Redskins, Falcons, and Lions I think those games could have turned out differently.
And I kind of feel the same way about our guys coming out tough, and ready to play. It’s great that it happened, especially considering how things went last week for us, but it’s like damn, where has that fire been all season? And why don’t we see that fire when we play lesser opponents?
I guess we just gotta’ hope that we continue to see that fire cause if we do, I think we could have a real shot at doing something in the playoffs.

A great performance ruined by coaching decisions
With this HC we’re going nowhere, period.
I’m just gonna take one episode, the one that tilted the game. Wasn’t their kickoff return, or their INT return, it was this:
1st and goal on their 2 yd line – all of a sudden BJax is having the game of his life and he doesn’t see the football. Where the hell is common sense with this coach? I mean, let’s stop with everything else and ask:
MM where is your common sense, man?
How many times have we thrown away points at the opponent one yd line because of poor coaching decisions? I lost count
The fact that we continue to come up short in this fashion time and again goes back to coaching. Good team, not so good coaching. Not going far with MM, sorry. I don’t have any confidence in him. Zero.

Against a Belichick D, though
He’ll give you soft yardage as long as you do it to his pace – 5 yards at a time, in the middle of the field.
And it was a Belichick D in the Red Zone, too – tightened up and only gave 2 TDs from 5 Red Zone attempts. That’s the same kind of stat line against the Steelers or Colts or Ravens.

No matter what the play call was, if it didn’t work out, you would be on here talking about how horrible a decision it was.
It was 1st and 2nd on the goal line. He gave the ball to our power back who had been getting first downs like they were nothing. I disagree with the formation he used (Kuhn should have been the HB, not the FB), but the playcall was solid. The execution wasn’t Get over it.

I didn’t actually think the playcalling was bad in the Red Zone. They were trying to put pressure on the young Pats secondary instead of trying to run it against the experienced Patriots D-line.

But the same play twice in a row? And especially a FB dive? Kuhn’s effective as a runner when he can get going a little bit. It’s hard to really get going when you’re only a step or two away from the line.
I think it’s a perfectly valid thing to question.

Well yeah, but you have to consider what formations he was successful running from, and those were the shotgun, and 3 WR looks. All of those formations are passing formations. Him running from those was kind of an element of surprise type of thing. Most of the those run plays were with only seven guys in box, expecting pass.
It’s a whole other ball game when you’ve got 7-8 down linemen in goaline formation expecting the run.

This guy just doesn't understand
Brandon Jackson is a good RB in situations where the defense might be expecting a pass – he’s quick enough to make them pay if they leave a hole open, and his skills in the passing game are good.
In a situation where you have 5-6 defensive linemen, all 11 guys in the box……not so much.
But apparently, we should be giving it Jackson because “it was his night to shine!!!!!”

I agree that McCarthy should give up his play calling duties
But that doesn’t mean he’s a bad Head Coach. I think with less stress from having to call plays he may be able to make better decisions in managing the game. Remember, it is him that developed Rodgers and even Flynn. It is him that keeps our offense near the top of the league. It was him that brought in Dom Capers when nobody else did. He isn’t as bad as you think. He has the perfect chemistry with TT come draft day as well. They know who to draft and who they can work with.
"No player is greater than a team."

so assign him as a QB coach
Apparently that’s his skill. We’re asking him to do something he cannot do.
by Rodgers_for_MVP on Dec 20, 2010 8:53 AM CST up reply actions
Then you lose a couple things
For starters, McCarthy wouldn’t stay here if demoted. That is a very very rare occurance anywhere. 2nd, then he is just teaching the basics and the QB’s are thrown into a new system that the Head Coach prefers.
McCarthy’s not perfect, but what Head Coach is? Regardless of who we hire we are all going to be critics of one thing or another. Maybe a change would be good, but maybe not. Remember, the wrong hire can definately set the team back even further. It can ruin everything. It’s not a wise move if we are unsure at this point. I think if the team stays healthy next year, it will make TT’s job a little easier in deciding what to do. Personally, I think he’ll finish the remaining 2 years of his contract. Who knows what will happen after that.
There are a lot of bad hires in the league and it really sets the team back. The questions are: Will McCarthy give up his play calling duties, How will he solve the Special Teams problems, and will the less responsibilities in play calling improve his clock management?

We all believe in the Packers, we wouldn’t all comment here religiously if we didn’t. Some just don’t believe in the coach, and I think it’s warranted.
You know football Stroh, so you tell me if being 5-16 in close games as a head coach is just a some bad bounces or a trend? At what point does that record start to become of concern? How about the team consistently coming out flat against lesser opponents? At what point does that become a concern? How about the special teams? They’ve consistently been poor for 4 years now. Why hasn’t someone been brought in to straighten them out? Because McCarthy does have his say in hiring staff members if I’m not mistaken. Honestly, at what point do all of those things become concerning?

Who's to say SB can't happen this year?
If we win out there’s two teams above us that are maybe scary…Atlanta & Philly.
It is possible but at the same time it seems unlikely because of the mistakes. It seems like we consistently make mistakes game in and game out, and against the best, you just can’t do that.

You're taking something that lead to 14 points and comparing it to something that would have been a net gain of four.
Yes that would have been nice to see the game tied at that point so all Flynn has to do is kick a FG. But the Packers shoot themselves in the foot with special teams and just downright ugly football. Packers should have won it without having a last second drive, we really outplayed the Pats. But this is another case of shooting ourselves in the foot. :/

I'm kind of sick of this argument
Yeah, I get that there are injuries, but how freaking hard is it to stay in your lanes on kickoff coverage? I’d be willing to be that most of these guys have played special teams at multiple levels, and Slocum can’t coach them up well enough to feel comfortable kicking the ball like a normal team? That’s pathetic.
Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"
It’s not. It’s by far the easiest thing to coach in football. But if you watch our kickoff coverage, it’s like they’re all running down there with their heads cut off. No lane discipline at all. And I’d say it’s on the players but don’t you think a bunch of 22+ year old men should be capable of running down their damn lanes? I mean honestly. Yes, they’re generally not as talented as the guys who play defense/offense but they don’t really have to be to cover a kick.

I was actually pretty impressed with MM’s play calling today. He kept it balanced, and that is what you need to win football games. I just wish he would do that more often. Tuff loss today, but at least they hung in there till the very and stayed competitive against one of the hottest teams right now. We just need to win out the rest of the season, and hope the Bears lose tomorow, or next week.

I remember the blow outs of the 80s. You do not want to go down that road. Close games against good teams mean we’re a good team. We could have won that game. If two plays went our way or we had A-rod, we have a chance to beat them. That tells me that if we get into the playoffs, we’re not going to be a stepping stone. I’m too rational to consider this argument.
Come on man. If you want to criticize MM’s performance in close games, fine, whatever. But to suggest that those losses are from “one freaking playcall” is borderline psychotic. Some of those losses couldn’t possibly have to do with penalties (Bears this year), ST (too many to count), our defense sitting in a shell late in games (several last year), etc, right?
Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"
There is one key moment in every close game
When the game is won or lost. MM keeps fumbling that moment up. Apparently you don’t see it or don’t want to see it.
Last night, it was first and goal at NE 2 YD line with one qtr to play. We go up by 10, we stand a great chance of winning that game. We didn’t. And you know the rest. They scored 10 pts, seized the game, and we scored none.
Yet people keep giving MM a pass for another great game he called. Yet he messed up the play of the game.
NE underestimated us big time yesterday. We did not expect to see that. We had them open for the knockout punch and couldn’t deliver it. Cause our HC just doesn’t have it.

by Rodgers_for_MVP on Dec 20, 2010 12:51 PM CST up reply actions
This whole line of argument is ridiculous
Look, I am very concerned about how much we lose close games. But, this particular game is one that absolutely no one thought the Packers could even compete in. This is one of those games that you do not need to win in order to get positive benefits from it. I’m not happy with every single play that the Packers ran, but overall this was a great job of coaching. Sure, McCarthy is partly to blame for the loss, but without a great job by the coaching staff (except Slocum of course) we would not have even been in a position to win.
On a side note, I really wanted an interception last night — we had too many opportunities to come away with no interceptions.
For Rodgers_for_MVP
McCarthy has to call a perfect game. If he calls the wrong play even once, he is an awful coach and needs to be fired immediately.

We have been countering your points, such as....
Your point – “Oh my god!!!! Why didn’t McCarthy give it to Brandon Jackson on the goalline?!?!?!?!? What a horrible playcall by McCarthy!!!”
Our counter – “Giving the ball to your powerback who is on a roll, instead of your RB who typically goes down at first contact, is the best playcall. The fact that it didn’t work out doesn’t mean McCarthy made a stupid choice.”
The fact that you don’t listen to rational arguments doesn’t mean we aren’t countering your points. If he had given it to Brandon Jackson on those plays, and he got stuffed (like he does 95% of the time in short yardage situations) you would be on here saying the exact same thing you are now, except you’d be saying “Oh my god!!!! Why didn’t he give the ball to Kuhn???? What a horrible playcall!!!”

5-16 record in close games
How do you explain it? Don’t give me “the players have to deliver” thing. You have to put the players in position to deliver.
The truth is that the coaching staff is not good. This team has an explosive offense, the number one defense, and again is struggling to make the playoffs. Injuries are not excuses, every team in NFL is injured, and the replacement players have stepped up big.
Unfortunately, our HC doesn’t know how to step up big.
by Rodgers_for_MVP on Dec 20, 2010 12:35 PM CST up reply actions
“You have to put the players in position to deliver.”
And they were in that position, on the very plays you are pointing to as the example of why McCarthy is so awful.
They were down at the one yard line. They had a playcall to give it to the powerback (the correct playcall). That is the very definition of a “position to deliver.” They didn’t deliver.
“Injuries are not excuses, every team in NFL is injured, and the replacement players have stepped up big.”
Yeah, not like McCarthy is responsible in any way for how our replacements have stepped up big. Not like he had anything to do with the fact that we were in the position to beat the best team, with our backup QB, if only our line could block for a 1 yard run.
Nope. Blame McCarthy for any negative things (real or imagined) and give all the credit to other people for all the positives. Gotcha.

I stand by the opinion that if this team is to win anything, it will do it despite the HC, not because of the HC. Unfortunately, the hurdle to achieve that is getting bigger and bigger every week.
You and me will root for a Packer SB will all our hearts. This generation of players that we got now, one of the best offenses and defenses in NFL, it’s a shame not to win at least one trophy with them.
I hope they can overcome their coaching staff’s shortcomings. I am not rooting for MM to go, I am rooting for GB to win. I’m just left heartbroken week after week. This team is too good to come up short.

2 of our 4 original starters in the secondary (since Collins was out for over half the game)
Our backup QB
Our backup RBs
Our 3rd string TE
But nope, they must be winning “despite” McCarthy.
I’ll say it again…… Good God.

I’m counting Jolly in the d-line, since he would have been a starter if not for the suspension, but I’ll grant that might be a cheap one. So we can say 2 of our 3 original starters on the d-line.
That makes 5 of our 11 original starters on defense, and by my count, 7 of our original starters on offense (without 3 of our 4 most important offensive players – Rodgers, Finley, Grant).
So, we have 12 of our 22 original starters in that game, missing 3 of our 4 major weapons on offense, and we nearly beat the best team in the NFL.
But according to Rodgers_for_MVP, any positive things are happening “despite McCarthy”
Once again, Good God.

it will do it despite the HC, not because of the HC. Unfortunately, the hurdle to achieve that is getting bigger and bigger every week.
It’s getting bigger why? Because you say it is? Are you of the opinion that MM is regressing as a coach?
Fine, you think that MM is not a good coach, that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. But I do not agree with your logic whatsoever.
Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"
You don't think it's getting bigger?
We face 2 playoff games to get to the playoffs. MM is not regressing as a coach, he’s just at a level he can’t get any better.
I am not looking for my point on the HC to get validated, I want the Packers to win. Unfortunately, there’s a track record over the years that shows that my point is not mute.

Let me expand my quote of you
if this team is to win anything, it will do it despite the HC, not because of the HC. Unfortunately, the hurdle to achieve that is getting bigger and bigger every week.
This quote led me to believe you weren’t just talking about this year. Is it going to be a cake walk to win the SB this year? Obviously not. But your quote leads me to believe that you think going into next year it’s going to even tougher to overcome MM than it was this year.
Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"
By this logic
Matt Flynn is now our starting QB because he’s the hottest of our QBs right now… he put up more points then Aaron in Detroit… and he moved the ball pretty well against NE
Nevermind that Aaron has a proven track record in multiple instances, right now Matt Flynn is the hotter of our QBs so lets start him

Thanks
I really do appreicate that.
As for an actual point and not some arbitrary crappy analogy… It’s tough to say what the best idea in that situation… there’s a case for both sides… BJack was playing his best ball of the year so go w/ the hot hand… there’s also the track record of him consistently getting hit in the backfield and going down for a 2-3 yard loss
IMO the right call would have been a play-action fade or some type of quick slant/out route since we’ve struggled with goal-line running all year
Unfortunately, the only way we can truly avoid this argument is if whatever play is called works… since it didn’t… we’re kinda effed as fans at that point

I wanted a pass too
I was surprised that they ran on first and second down in that situation. I would much rather have seen a run on first down and then two passes. I wondered at the time if McCarthy’s play calling was influenced by the interception in the end zone that Flynn threw the week before.

I think this is a very interesting suggestion
I wondered at the time if McCarthy’s play calling was influenced by the interception in the end zone that Flynn threw the week before.
My initial thought is that it did not influence MM’s decision. Keep in mind he let Flynn fire away earlier in the game near the goal line and got a TD pass to Jennings. But I’m starting to wonder about that now.
Towlieppan: "You wanna throw high?"
These situations at the one yd line are just furious and unacceptable
It’s happened in ATL, and here.
we will never know, but something is wrong here. It’s not that they had one 4th down try at the one yd line….they had multiple chances.
A well coached team just doesn’t waste chances like these. I’m leaving it at that

I would agree with that
our Goal-line play (heck I redzone as a whole) has been very very bad this year… and failure to convert in the redzone has cost us AT LEAST 2 games (NE and Atlanta) and possibly more (I’m not in the mood to really look it up right now)
I’d almost be happier if we starting taking 5 yd delay of game penalties inside the 5 yard line to increase our touchdown chances

he called a great game (playcalling-wise). I am a BIG MM hater, but I loved the gameplan and i hope he sees the success and keeps it up. The final minute was a complete disaster and he gets a share of that blame but other than that, he had a great game as a coach.

I agree completely
this was a nearly masterful coaching job by McCarthy. I know it is frustrating to come this close to beating a great team on the road, but you don’t come that close without some seriously good coaching and play calling.
No doubt, and I feel the same way but at what point is that not good enough? He’s 5-16 in close games right now, and that has to be a concern. Even for those who appear to defend anything and everything McCarthy ever does.

I am very concerned
about the Packers record in close games. I really think the answer is for McCarthy to give up play calling and focus his efforts on the little things that win close games. Unfortunately, losing close games is beginning to become a cultural norm with this organization. I wonder if it will make it that much more difficult to turn it around.
It's hard to vote
for POG when there were so many stupid mistakes that cost yet another game. I know some of you don’t like to hear it, but this team is looking an awful lot like the Lions teams I watched for 20+ yrs. We just play good enough to lose. Every Monday, I would read in the Detriot papers…….“We SHOULDA won this game. And, we COULDA won this game. And, we WOULDA won this game…………IF ONLY………….”you fill in the blank.
I don’t like the “I’m not voting for anyone cause we lost”. I see this EVERY game we lose. We are going to lose and we are going to have ugly plays but ultimately there were some GREAT players in that game that deserve recognition.
The Green Bay Packers...Putting bad coaches out of their misery since 2010
Gotta go with Flynn...
Although his inexperience helped lose the game, he played a hell of a game, and it wasn’t completely his fault. Of course the infamous KR and hate to say it cuz he’s one of my favorite players but Woodson gave up 2 big plays: the missed interception that was right in his hands in the 1st quarter, and he got burned in the endzone on one of the pats TDs. but back to Flynn, this game gave me a lot of confidence that he can do a good job covering for Rodgers short term if he needs to. I just hope Rodgers won’t ever have to go out multiple weeks, because I don’t think he’s ready for something like that yet. Oa side note, maybe Jackson should’ve also been nominated. I don’t think that if he had the game he
had, Flynn wouldn’t have been as successful as he was.

Woodson's TD was due to no pass rush and no help
With that much time to throw, one of Brady’s targets was gonna eventually get open. If it had happened to Shields (again), you wouldn’t have batted an eyelash.

Did you expect the Packers to once again come within a single possession of a 12-2 team on the road? No. That’s where they theoretically should be blown out. But the team is talented despite all the injuries that they CAN hold their own against the best teams in the NFL, week-in, and week-out.

The New England Patriots under the Zen Hoodie do not take any team lightly. And, what are you talking about put this one away? They barely won the game. If they are so much better than the Packers they would have come out in the second half and run away with it. Didn’t happen.
NE probably was less-prepared for Flynn
I think had Rodgers started the Packers might have lost by 10 points. But not much worse than that.

I might be jumping to conclusions from one game,
but it seems to me that New England’s defense may not be good enough to win a Super Bowl this year.
Packers "Special" Teams -- you know, like Special Olympics
statistically, that defense is misleading.
It doesn’t quite meet “bend but don’t break”. It’s far more like, “Hold the 14+ point lead the offense got you whatever it takes”.
Some part of me wants to say they’re average, but an average defense just doesn’t quite fit giving up 27 points at home to a 2nd string QB. I think they’re young, and building. And in a couple years, they might just be the blend of top 5 offense and top 10 defense that gets them 6-0 in the AFC East for some years in a row, and maybe even a Super Bowl or two.

I don’t think so. They can be run on, which makes things hard on those young CB’s they have. Though, they did have DL out, which will probably help their run defense in their return.

Wow, another game that you can point to Shawn Slocum as a major reason for the loss
what more could it possibly take for him to get fired???
Not only is it inexcusable to let a 313 lb offensive lineman return a kick more than 70 yards, but that was a major momentum shift in the game. Packers were up 17-7, and were looking great headed into the half. Pats scored next two touchdowns and went up 21-17.
And I don’t want to hear about how the onsides kick balanced that out. The Pats were completely caught off guard and we got a really lucky bounce. The Packers need to be prepared to tackle on kick coverage. Even if it’s the players’ fault, at some point you need to start holding the head honcho responsible.

Raji had the game of his career…he’s getting it. He gave Brady fits all game. I don’t know what his statline was but watching the game, he was making plays all over the place. Flynn was impressive and if he won the game for it, he got my vote but Raji controlled the line and dominated that game.

FIRE McCARTHY!!!!!!!!
Just kidding. :-D
Excellent gameplan this week, in general playcalling was good. Agree with Rodgers_for_MVP that running the same quick handoff to Kuhn at the goal line was a poor decision given how the Pat’s D was lined up, but it certainly wasn’t a game changer. I did think (rather loudly at the time) that MM should have called a timeout during Brady’s hurry-up TD drive so we could get a better defensive grouping on the field, but given how the timeout situation fizzled at the end of the game that probably was a wash.
The game changer was the absolutely absurd kickoff return, no question. Without that easy TD, it’s a whole different ballgame.
Speaking of kickoffs – anyone else think it’s ridiculous how much we keep doing those ineffective squib kicks, popup kicks to the 30 yard line? I think the Packers have 4 more wins if they had a kickoff specialist who consistently kicked touchbacks like Cundiff has been doing for the Ravens. Would love it if TT considered going that route next year instead of keeping 8 TEs and 6 FBs, lol.
My problem with your last point
is that then the Packers are taking up 4 roster spots on specialists: K, P, LS, and a kick-off specialist. That’s a lot, not to mention you need all of them on the 45-man active roster for game day. I’d rather get a raw guy in the draft that we can stash on the 53-man and develop than getting a specialist.

People keep saying this but Crosby is perfectly capable of booming a kick into the end zone. The problem is he can’t consistently do it every time. The danger in having him kick off deep everytime is when one isn’t downed for a touchback. Our kickoff coverage is absolutely abysmal, which is why we always have him pooch it into a corner or squib one. It’s quite embarrassing actually.

Good Performance
including standout, jaw dropping plays from Raji and Kuhn. Way to go Flynn. He made the most of an opportunity to make a name for himself in the NFL. Too bad he couldn’t hang a w on the scoreboard. I voted Raji for game ball, but they were all great. Tough season, but hopefully it chips the shoulder next year. If Tramon Williams doesn’t earn mention for a pro bowl berth I’ll be pissed. Raji seems to be a true gamer. the D showed up for most of the game, but AJ Hawk fails to make any true plays except for the batted pass near the end. Hopefully Collins is OK, if he broke ribs maybe shut him down for the season, as the playoff hopes are on life support. Maybe shut down Woodson too? He’s great but he’s on the back nine of his career, probably the home stretch.
Brandon Jackson looked really quick and hit the hole with authority. I was glad to see that. The Pack shot themselves in the foot with some drops and one of the games all time plays with Dan Connolly.

Why all the negativity?
It wasn’t a game we were supposed to win, to begin with! If anything, it showed the Packers can hang with the top teams despite the barrage of injuries and an inconsistent running game (the Falcons game is another good example). The Packers just need to keep taking care of business at home, where they’re 5-1, and they’re in the playoffs.

There are so many positives to take from this game. I even think it will be the last straw that will get Slocum fired! I see a team that is ready to finish out the season strong and make some waves in the playoffs.
Flynn was outstanding, it was great how he went out there and got after it.
It is nice to know GB has a competent back up QB. It was cool of Rodgers to be out there on the sidelines enthusiastically rooting Flynn on. Flynn might be a top of the line NFL quarterback given regular playing time. It would be interesting to see what he could do given a whole season of starts on some team. I’m glad he is a Packer.

I hope you have to go watch practice to get your wish. Nothing negative on Flynn — he had a great game. But he was not calm when he was pressured, got confused and had to take otherwise unnecessary timeouts, and was certainly part of the problem on the last drive. With more practice and playing, those things could be fixed, but he has not had enough of either to put the remaining important games in his hands. On the other hand, he is better than I could have hoped for to serve as a back up for Rodgers.

Honestly, I’d prefer he didn’t play against the Giants or Bears to preserve some trade value. Both of those teams have the ability to get pressure on the QB while rushing only 4. And if there’s on thing we learned last night, it was that Flynn doesn’t look very comfortable when the offensive line doesn’t give him time. Compound that with 7 guys in coverage, and I’d be very worried about how Flynn would fair.
Don’t get me wrong, I was very happy with what Flynn showed on Sunday, but to expect something like that again against the Giants or Bears is a little too optimistic for me.
