Packers Game Ball Recap: Packers Roll Giants, 45-17

While I thought this big score was possible for the Green Bay Packers, I expected the Giants would avoid turnovers. Instead they coughed it up six times. And I expected a lot more fight from the Giants defense that was rolled by the Packers offense. Both teams were mediocre on special teams, and the Packers defense allowed some big pass plays, but overall the Packers were in control for nearly the entire game.

I'm having a hard time picking players for this week's poll. Even guys who had some bad plays (WR Jordy Nelson's fumble, CB Tramon Williams's long touchdown allowed to WR Mario Manningham) made up for it with some big positive plays of their own. Who stood out this week in your eyes? Here's who I went with.

QB Aaron Rodgers had time to throw and the Giants secondary seemed to be on their heels after Nelson torched them for an 80 yard touchdown reception. The result: 404 passing yards, 4 touchdowns, and no interceptions. FB John Kuhn only had 29 yards of total offense, but he scored three touchdowns. Of all the great players on defense, I went with LB Clay Matthews because he forced a fumble and was in the backfield for most of the game. FS Nick Collins had two pass defenses and an interception, but he seemed to play a big part in preventing the long plays after the two long touchdown passes.

Agree with you Brandon.

Rodgers was the difference today. He played probably his best game all season.

Rodgers by far.

The guy was money. He had a big game to win and won it. He made some redunkulous plays.

A-Rodg by a landslide.....

Defense was killer, but Rodgers was on it all night… and in a new helmet (not that has anything to do with the price of cheese in France) he killed the #2 pass defense and almost ruined their playoff hopes (and maybe Coughlin’s job).

Good point

The Giants’ defensive line is very tough to beat.

Love how so many analysts and such were even picking the Giants for this game, based on the fact that they would win the battle in the trenches and Rodgers would have a hard time against their defense.

The Packers thrive on making people eat crow.

three straight weeks the Packers have surprised

against the Lions (negatively), against the Pats (positively) and now, positively with a win against the Giants. Of course, I did see a couple of picks of the Packers based on the trauma the Giants went through against the Eagles last week. It did look like they were still hung over from that loss.

I'm expecting 100% improvement from the Lions this season.

The Green Bay Packers...Putting bad coaches out of their misery since 2010

by TrevorR on Dec 27, 2010 9:54 AM CST up reply actions

It's one thing

if that loss sticks in their craw a bit but if they were really all that good, they should’ve kept this game at least somewhat competitive. It was only close for a few minutes in the second quarter. The whole game was all Packers, all the way.

We need to bring this same sort of fire next week against Chicago, who will have a first round bye and the chance to knock their old rivals out of the playoffs on the line. This isn’t even close to 2006, because Chicago had long wrapped up their position and Green Bay had nothing to play for. There’s a lot at stake for both teams this time around.

by vitaminx on Dec 26, 2010 7:29 PM CST up reply actions

It was a 7 point game at half

If the Giants had brought a little stickum for their gloves, the game isn’t nearly as one sided. The Giants players just weren’t mentally there it seemed, but then again, turnovers have been their downfall all season.

I'm expecting 100% improvement from the Lions this season.

by ahtrap on Dec 26, 2010 7:32 PM CST up reply actions

It wasn't as close as it looked at half time

The only reason the Giants were still in it at that point was two big plays that happened because of corners losing their footing. Aside from those two fluky plays, they got dominated the entire half

by Sheegan on Dec 26, 2010 9:34 PM CST up reply actions

What exactly is at stake?

Can’t do the math in my head, what are the scenarios for the Packers next week? Is it a win and they’re in?

And the Bears, can they still get home field throughout if Atlanta wins tomorrow? Or is it a matte of staying ahead of Philly for the 2nd seed? Funny to think that Minnesota can still influence the playoff chase when they’re on the verge of a Battle to Escape The Basement with the Lions next week.

I’m thinking playoff positioning

I'm expecting 100% improvement from the Lions this season.

by ahtrap on Dec 26, 2010 7:36 PM CST up reply actions

the scenarios

Basically, if the Pack win they are in.

If they lose and TB and NY lose then they are in.

So right now it’s down to us taking care of business. I think they can do that, especially with how leaky the Bears D has been the last couple weeks.

by PackApologist on Dec 26, 2010 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

Although it is amazing how the Bears are getting – stop me if you’ve heard this before – another break – by the Vikings/Eagles game getting moved to Tuesday. With the Eagles then only having 5 days to get ready for the Cowboys, it is plausible (but not likely) that Dallas pulls the upset, especially when you consider that Dallas played on Christmas night.

But yes, it would be nice to see the Pack knock the Bears out of the 2 seed, and then beat them at Soldier Field one week later.

by TarHeelHawk on Dec 26, 2010 8:18 PM CST up reply actions

I would prefer

Instead of that I would like to see the Packers win next week and the Saints lose Monday and next week to get the number 5 seat. That way we pull either the Rams or the Seahawks in the first game.

by PackApologist on Dec 26, 2010 8:41 PM CST up reply actions

So that basically boils down to Green Bay needing

to beat the Bears one week from today, and for the Bucs to go into the SuperDome and win.

by TarHeelHawk on Dec 26, 2010 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

Actually, playing with the scenarios,

a Giants win against the Redskins would give the Packers the 5 seed as well.

That seems a lot more likely than Tampa beating the Saints at the Dome.

by TarHeelHawk on Dec 26, 2010 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

The Saints need to loose the next two

for the packers to have any chance of getting the 5 seed. If the Saints win one more game they have 11 wins and lock up the 5th seed. It doesn’t really matter what NY does next week unless the Pack lose to the bears.

by JDub37 on Dec 26, 2010 9:23 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, you're right

It looks like the 6 seed and re-match in Chicago in two weeks are the most likely scenarios.

I think New Orleans loses tomorrow, but not against Tampa. But, New Orleans did lose home games against Dallas and Tampa last year, and neither of those teams sniffed the playoffs, so you never know.

by TarHeelHawk on Dec 26, 2010 9:26 PM CST up reply actions

yeah, I don't think the Saints lose next week

It should be a good game though. Tampa has played tough all year, but they have yet to beat a team with a winning record. I think their strength of victory is something like.290!

My criteria included a minimum of 50 tackles, 10 sacks + 2 forced fumbles (team record in parenthesis; players on sub-.500 teams were excluded, for obvious reasons):

James Harrison, PIT (11-4): 94 tackles, 11 sacks, 6 forced fumbles

Clay Matthews III, GB (9-6): 58 tackles, 12.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles

Terrell Suggs, BAL (11-4): 65 tackles, 11 sacks, 2 forced fumbles

Justin Tuck, NYG (9-6): 74 tackles, 11 sacks, 6 forced fumbles

Raji

I’m going with a write-in candidate for a game ball and that’s BJ Raji. He was collapsing the pocket all day, just pushing the NY midline back. That helped control the vaunted Giant running game and put the game in the wrong Manning’s hands. Game ball, Raji!

There was a lot of good play, but

Rodgers doing what he did coming back after a concussion makes this vote a no brainer. I can’t believe there were “analysts” suggesting that Rodgers should not play in this game because it was too risky.

it’s ALWAYS risky coming back from a concussion, that’s why the 2nd and 3rd ones come easier.

Sure, I get that

but the NFL has the most stringent policy on concussions that they have ever had. So, do you trust the process and play the guy when he conforms to the policy or do you sit him? Rodgers at least demonstrated that his head was right for that game. You could sit him just to be safe, but for those that thought he should sit I ask this question: When would be the right time for him to play again?

Protection

I believe each network (CBS, FOX) can protect a preferred game rather than give their best game of the week to a rival network (NBC.) Fox probably protected the Bears-Packers game as their most attractive NFC matchup and moved it to their national double header game, forcing NBC to take something else. Wouldn’t the Rams – Seahawks game for the NFC West title be riveting TV?

That "very good" Jets defense has been exposed by just about everyone in the past several weeks

The loss of Wisconsin-alum Jim Leonhard really seems to have hurt them. He was the guy who made all the calls in the secondary. Ever since he went down, that defense has really sucked.

Plus, they have always been pretty overrated. Good run defense, good (but not great – Revis is definitely WAY overrated) corners, and that’s about it. They have absolutely no pass rush. They’re a good defense, but at this point, they are far from “very good.” Since the Packers win over them, the Jets have given up the following totals: 20 points, 20 points, 27 points, 10 points, 45 points, 10 points, 17 points, and 38 tonight. (The 10 point games were against Cincinnati and their ugly loss to Miami.)

What, Brandon Jackson and his 2.2yd/carry aren't on the list?

Or Nance and his 3.6?

I was on the road for the first half and part of the third quarter. After virtually every Jackson run, Larry McCarren (who knows a little about this sort of thing) would mention that Jackson could have gotten more yards if he’d run where the hole actually developed instead of where the hole was supposed to be. I’m no expert, but my understanding has always been that the zone blocking scheme’s primary advantages were that it cut off back side pursuit and it permitted the RB to make 1 cut and hit the hole?

I know this Oline doesn’t run block very well, but I’m telling you, there are yards to be made out there, and Jackson leaves them on the field almost every time he touches the ball. Nance is only marginally better.

nance > jackson

He at least has the balls to lower a shoulder and whenever I see him run, it’s usually for around 3-4 yards.

> Jackson? Really?

How good is he at catching passes in the flat?
How well does he pick up the blitzes, thus helping to keep Rodgers in the game?
When it comes to picking up blitzes, damned few are > Jackson.
And, on basic runs, Jackson has been known, on occasion, to get through the hole and into the secondary.
Maybe not as much as you’d like, but he does do it!

Looking at the whole package, I’d say that Jackson > Dmitri.

Nance’s longest carry has been for 11 yards, and he has not scored a touchdown!

Yeah, but the situation that those two receive their carries in are much different. A good chunk of Nance’s have come at the end of games in blow outs, when we’ve had Spitz and Lang in there as well. Jackson has gotten carries when the game is really on the line all season long.

Nance looked good against the Giants too me. He’s much more decisive than Brandon “I like to dance back and forth” Jackson, and more powerful too.

Exactly

Jackson runs like he fears contact (probably because he can’t break any tackles, ever), and that causes him to hesitate and try to make too many moves instead of the quick cut and hitting the hole hard (haha). That’s what made Ryan Grant such a good back – he ran aggressively every time he got the ball, and consistently broke tackles. I still don’t know why people didn’t think they were going to miss him much when he went down.

by Sheegan on Dec 26, 2010 9:38 PM CST up reply actions

I beg to differ

To me Jackson loves contact. Whenever there’s a choice between a hole and a wall of linemen. He runs into the linemen.

I get wanting to keep Jackson out on the field because he picks up blitzes and generally is very effective...

… at keeping Rodgers from getting killed. But you can’t win in the playoffs averaging 3yds a carry, and the only guy on the roster who’s got a chance of doing more than that against stout run defenses is Starks.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Dec 26, 2010 9:26 PM CST up reply actions

This is exactly what Jackson is good for

He’s an excellent third down back because he picks up the blitz, is a good receiver for screens, and runs the draw well because he’s shifty. As an every down back, having to run between the tackles when the defense doesn’t assume a pass is coming, he’s borderline useless.

by Sheegan on Dec 26, 2010 9:40 PM CST up reply actions

He can be shifty in space....

I'm struggling with whether or not I'd rather have Philly lose to Minnesota

if they lose, the Bears are locked into the 2 seed, and they’ll probably rest their starters for part of the game next week, despite what Lovie Smith says about loving to beat the Packers.

I can’t decide whether or not I’d like to have an easier path into the playoffs for our injury depleted team, or if I’d rather knock the Bears out of the first-round-bye perch with our starters vs. their starters.

The good news is that we have basically been in position to win every single game we’ve lost. The bad news is that we still haven’t sewn up a playoff position. As usual, Mike McCarthy’s teams find a way to shoot themselves in the foot. Hard to explain, really.

We shouldn't need the easy route

If we can’t beat Chicago, at home, when they have something to play for, then how can we expect to go on the road and win three straight games against teams as good or better?
I’d much rather have them play their starters so we can see if the Packers have a legit chance to do something in the playoffs.
Also, I wouldn’t want them to let up at all, like they would if they knew the Bears weren’t trying to win. They’ll be better off if they keep their foot on the gas all the way through the playoffs, including next week.

Honestly, with Rodgers back, and the defense playing at a high level, as long as we don’t commit eighteen penalties, kick line drive punts to Hester, and turn the ball over during the game’s most important drive, we should win fairly easily… The Packers are a far better team than the Bears when they don’t make stupid mistakes

Nice game for AR's comeback

Rough start, up 14-0, then before you could say ‘shit’ it’s 14-14. I gotta tell ya, tho, when AR had to scramble and couldn’t find DD running free, I figured we’d settle for another FG. Then, on the next play JN fumbles and we get ZERO. I’m thinking deja vu all over again, we’re gonna shoot ourselves in the foot again. You wouldn’t know it from the stats, but Kuhn had a pretty good game. Nice run in the 1st on 3rd and 1 for the 1st down. He was stopped but kept on diggin, wouldn’t be denied. AR=140 QB rating. The best stat, imo=ONE FG @ 31 yrds.
Guess I’d rather play da bares in the 1st game. Vick always gives us probs. But, really, if we don’t beat ourselves, we can beat anyone. It’s frustrating to think that this team could be 15-0 right now.

Gotta Say Rodgers

deserves the game ball without question. I think the story is—who is the goat? James Jones gets my vote. He can’t be counted on.
The Oline didn’t open any huge holes in the run game, which gave Rodgers the opportunity to shine. Run Blocking seems to be one of the monstrous weaknesses of this team.
Credit Desmond Bishop. I say the guy is every bit the player Nick B is. I’m glad he got his shot, like Flynn and Pep and Kuhn. Kuhn was a celebrity out there yesterday.

Wow!

We rout a 9-5 team that is in serious trouble with a loss, but can clinch a playoff spot with a win, 45-17 — and you wanna look for a goat?

Again, WOW!

Good point about Jones

That was the third time this year he’s dropped a perfectly thrown touchdown pass from Rodgers… and let’s not forget that he also was the one who carelessly held the ball low, in the inside arm, allowing the Bears to force the fumble that became the reason we’re not the division champions this year. Jones should be moved to the number 4 wideout, with Nelson at number 3 (not just because of Jones’ faults, Nelson has consistently better hands, is bigger, a better jumper, and just as fast)

Nelson's catch on the 10 yard line at the end of the game was so pretty,

but honestly you really cant go wrong with either of these guys as your #3 WR…!

But there not perfect!

Mrraagh! I want them to be perfect!

Actually I wanted to complain about Jordy’s fumble and Jones’ drop, but I can’t. They’re doing pretty good, I think I’m just not forgiving them for mistakes that I would forgive other players for because I can see them being better than they are. These guys are already good and I should just give them a break.

Stupid self realizations.

Bishop gets overlooked in this game

He had a great game, making all the little plays that elevate this defensive unit from good to great. He led the team in tackles, and saved the Brandon Jacobs fumble from going out of bounds. Rodgers deserves the game ball, but hats off to one of our less heralded linebackers for his excellent play.

Things happen for a reason they say, but I say there's a reason things happen.

Bishop's been playing out of his mind for the last month

Really shot up the depth chart. Assuming we have all these LBs going into training camp, it’s going to be a very interesting fight for starting spots next year.

TWO WORDS: CHARLES WOODSON.

Even though I voted for Rodgers for opening up a QBing clinic on the Giants and even though I’d be hard pressed not to give Clay Matthews my second vote, Woodson was in on so many plays, he was quietly the guy who they had no answer for although they probably focused on him more than anyone else in the secondary.

They just need to get him better plays.

He gave up a few plays yesterday because he was on his butt after losing his footing.

Omaha's Christmas List:

Anthony Tolliver to get healthy and resume doing this (see picture).

The Suns to go on a tear with their new parts.

A healthy Green Bay Packers team for a deep playoff run.

Gregory Echenique to become the love-child of Charles Barkley and Dikembe Mutombo.

Bubba Starling to say "Screw baseball" and head to Lincoln to take Taylor Martinez's job.

Great game for Rodgers. How many perfect throws did he make that game? I think the biggest thing though is his ability to move around in the pocket. He just looked so comfortable out there, and basically tore that Giants D to shreds. Some of the drops were disappointing though. Jones has got to start playing more consistently.

The defense was really, really impressive. Eli was clearly pretty rattled, and I think a lot of that had to do with Raji. He was pretty amazing yesterday. Matthews finally seems to be healthy again too, which is great news.

I think as long as we don’t beat our selves, we should win over the Bears and anybody else really. This is a really talented team, and I hope they continue to play up to their potential because when they do they’re hard to beat.

yep, Mathews was a mile better, taking on double teams and still pressuring the qb
