Tuesday Night Open Thread: Vikings at Eagles
Does anyone believe the Vikings have a chance in this game? Their crazy schedule seemed to drain the Vikings of life in their past two games, and this is an important one for the Eagles if they want a first round playoff bye.

The Vikings always
have a chance when Adrian Peterson is in the lineup, albeit tonight they don’t have a good one.

I don't think Peterson will matter much without a QB

I thought so too
but then the Vikings made the playoffs in 2008 with Tarvaris Jackson.
"Tragedy is what happens to me. Comedy is what happens to you." -Mel Brooks
They had a much better line then
And Tavaris in 2008 is better than Joe Webb in 2010.

Their defense was also on the rise
Instead of the rapid decline we’re seeing this year. That team got old fast.

The Vikings are a lesson to teams
that want to build through free agency. In the best of times you’ll get one or two legit shots at the Super Bowl, but after that, that’s it.
"Tragedy is what happens to me. Comedy is what happens to you." -Mel Brooks
I didn't see the fall coming this fast or hard though
To go from the NFC Championship to possibly last place in the division. Plus, that team looks like a mess. Besides their receivers, Peterson, and possibly the linebackers, everyone looks slow and worn out.

Tell that to the Giantsq
Well, you can tell ‘em now – glad you didn’t tell ’em before we played ’em.

No respect for him
That’s ok – I’m pretty sure he’d rather play the next week, anyway.

Yea, Brees and Ryan being ahead of him is a joke
That being said, Clifton and Collins are questionable choices as well.

I can see Collins
But Clifton and not Sitton? OK…

It's hard for offensive lineman
in their first pro bowl calibur year to actually get voted to the Pro Bowl. Pro Bowl’s a popularity contest especially for the positions that are hard to statistically evaluate.
"Tragedy is what happens to me. Comedy is what happens to you." -Mel Brooks
Brees isn't such a big deal
He’s at least as good as Rodgers, though this year he’s thrown a lot of picks.
Brees and Rodgers are very much alike in that (along with Peyton Manning), their offenses rely almost entirely on them.
But Matt Ryan is nothing compared to Rodgers. Any time the running game gets slowed down for Atlanta, Ryan can’t do anything.
Him being put ahead of Rodgers is a joke, plain and simple.
Cool time-lapse

Tramon Snubbed
Sitton too. Clifton, c’mon man. Must have slim pickings at left tackle in the NFC.
I think Tramon is playing at or above the level of Asante Samuel and DeAnglo Hall, if not Woodson.
DeAngelo Hall should not have made it
He tackles when he wants to.
"Tragedy is what happens to me. Comedy is what happens to you." -Mel Brooks
Everyone remembers the Chicago game
I haven’t even heard a whisper from that guy since then. The guy has 6 picks, but those came in only 3 games. Although I can’t believe he has 60+ tackles.
Greinke: "It’s not about the guacamole itself. I just don’t want to let them win."
the 60+ tackles
is more testament to Redskins bad front seven than it is Meangelo being a good corner.

The trouble is
That the Bears have so much personnel turnover that it’s hard for them to get their hate on. You think Cutler despises the Pack? Peppers? About the only guy on their team who could properly understand the rivalry is Urlacher.

Anybody think Frasier is a good coach?
I still get people at work who love the guy and I just don’t see it. His two wins were against bad teams at home and since that he has gotten absolutely crushed by everyone else. Granted, he is playing with Chilly’s team and without a QB. But yet he didn’t even learn from Childress (Catering to Favre) Oh, and his defensive scheme is as vanilla as can be, he just doesn’t have amazing front four play to cover it up anymore.
I want him to win the last two
And avoid the bottom of the division so he keeps the job.
No, I don’t think he’s a good coach.

Joe Webb drafted as a WR
They keep saying it over and over, but it is true? Webb played QB in the Vikings very first preseason game, and was on the depth chart as a QB at the start of the season.
Gotta keep the story good
If they keep saying it, it will be true!

He entered the draft as a WR, but they obviously intended for him to be a QB.
[enter some witty remark here]
by fanoftheunderdogs on Dec 29, 2010 1:08 AM CST up reply actions
When Webb was drafted, the intention was to make him a WR
but during the first full minicamp after the draft, they wanted to see him take a few snaps at QB, because of the ongoing Favre saga. By the end of the minicamp he had moved up to second team, ahead of Sage, and the Vikings decided to keep him at QB.

vs. NFC East
Packers 3-1
Bears 2-2
Lions 2-2
Vikings 2(?)-2
We all played ‘em pretty close this year, I’d say…

I really wanted a shot at knocking the Bears out of the playoffs.
That said, @ Eagles and @ Falcons is a very doable path to the NFC championship game.

Yeah, but...
So was @ Bears, @ Falcons… and it would have been so much more fun to eliminate the Bears. Now, even if everything goes right for the Pack, the Saints will probably still be the ones who eliminate Chicago

Joe Webb is good because he learned from Favre.
Favre took him under his wing and trained him just like he did with Aaron Rodgers. Brett Favre.

But his praise for both was just made irrelevant by the game tonight
AP may have had only one official fumble on the night, but he had it squirt out a lot more than that.
This is probably the closest to 2009 form the Vikings have been all year: pressuring the QB, ball-hawking mistakes, QB making mostly safe passes, and Peterson putting the ball on the ground.

I didn’t get your meaning the first time. I still think Vick deserves the start, it’s Brees and especially Ryan over Rodgers that are head-scratchers for me.
by Puddleglumed on Dec 28, 2010 10:44 PM CST up reply actions
Matty Ice is pretty damned good
We saw that in our game against the Falcons. He prepares well and comes to play every week. He has help in Tony Gonzalez (!) and Roddy White, but he’s looking awful strong (last night’s game notwithstanding). Breesus is being rewarded for his Super Bowl ring and nothing else. I’d have rather seen Vick, Ryan, and Rodgers myself, but I understand the voters’ motives here.
Bottom line: The voting public are sheep and all-star games are popularity contests. Weird, huh?

"If [Ruth] had [called his shot], I would have knocked him down with the next pitch." -Charlie Root
Matt Ryan doesn't do nearly as much for his offense as Rodgers and Brees do for theirs
All we saw ‘Matty Ice’ do in the Packers game against the Falcons was throw checkdown after checkdown and rely on a superb running game and special teams to win the day, which is what he always does, save for the occasional deep ball to White, who tends to either be wide open, or go up and get a jump ball. He doesn’t make any throws that any competent NFL QB doesn’t make just as consistently.
Even on that drive at the end into field goal range, they started on the Packers side of the field, and he threw three or four dumpoffs within five yards of the line to guys who were wide open.
Matt Ryan is a very good game manager. He’s nowhere near the level of a Rodgers or Brees (not yet anyway). Any time the Atlanta running game starts to struggle – like the other night for instance – Ryan can’t move the offense. When Aaron Rodgers or Drew Brees or Peyton Manning are in that situation, they find a way to get the ball down the field and put points on the board, consistently.
Basically, the difference is that Rodgers and Brees are ELITE quarterbacks (of which there are only five currently: Brady, Manning, and Rivers being the others, Roethlisberger is close, but he’s a rapist so I don’t include him)
