Johnny Jolly Is Back In Court
UPDATE: The hearing was reset for March 8th. This case is never ending. The arrest happened in July 2008, charges were filed, dismissed, refiled, and I'm sure this isn't the first reset. I just wish it would end with some resolution.
DE Johnny Jolly was good as a tackle in a 4-3 scheme, and he seems perfect as a defensive end in a 3-4 scheme. While his on-field performance should have earned him a long-term contract, his off-field battle with felony drug charges is something that's been hanging over his head. He'll be back in court on Thursday. The police allegedly found cups of codeine cough syrup mixed with soda in the car he was driving back in July 2008.

I didn't know a lot about Jolly and this court case.
I found this very informative article referenced on his wiki page here.
Sounds like he has a good shot at probation if convicted but would likely face punishment from the NFL.
Off topic comment: Also found interesting that year’s draft (2006):
A. J. Hawk • Daryn Colledge • Greg Jennings • Abdul Hodge • Jason Spitz • Cory Rodgers • Will Blackmon • Ingle Martin • Tony Moll • Johnny Jolly • Tyrone Culver • Dave Tollefson
Jolly was a sixth rounder. There are a few misses in there, but a good amount of talent. I’m not a Hawk hater, but he hasn’t lived up to the first round pick spent.
Some people say the glass is half empty, some say half full. I say, are you going to drink that?
jolly
whether he gets probation or not, jolly will get a 4 game suspension at the begining of the 2010 season. bad timing for jolly. he won’t get that multi-year contract that he is after. the packerswill sit and wait and see what happens before they sign him to an offer, which they should.
if people can remember when barnett got in trouble for pushing that women in a nightclub, he got a 1 game suspension from the league. he appealed it and got it reduced to a game check. that was just for pushing a person. jolly was in a vehicle with large amounts of codein, majiauna and a gun was found. a little more serious. the league implemented a conduct policy in feb. of 2007 that says you don’t have to be convicted of a crime to be suspended.
too bad, jolly, imo had a very good year last year for the pack. talented big men are hard to find.
This could be a huge problem
Pickett is a free agent, and he will command a premium on the open market. If Jolly is unable to play, that leaves Raji and Cullen Jenkins, and then a bunch of spare parts. Will we have to rely on Justin Harrell? God help us all!
Raji will get a four-game suspension only if he is exonerated. If he is convicted, or if he pleads guilty to reduced charges, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he gets a longer suspension. Drugs and guns are not something that the league condones.
I'm not as worried...
…just because there was no “incident” surrounding this. It wasn’t a big media circus, and all the focus seems to just be on the “codeine” possession. No gun was fired or brandished, no DUI, etc.
Dude was just sippin’ on dat sizzurp is all. Hopefully 4 games is the high end of his punishment.

I am more with you here. He was in a ridiculously stupid situation but I don’t think more than 4 games would be warranted for this.
Do you know what cough syrup is used for?
It’s called “drank” or “purple drank.” Jolly had enough in his car to f*ck up a whole football team. If it were an easy criminal case to resolve, it would have pleaded out the first time he was indicted for it. I have a bad feeling the prosecutor is going to take a hard line.
Pickett might not command the premium you think he will. He’s the exact player was when we got him from the Rams. He was a young, low profile guy who sat around for a long time before he got the offer from GB. Now he’s 30 and has maybe 3 years left at this level…I don’t know that teams are going to jump all over him like you think they will. Sure he’s a good player but he’s not Casey Hampton or something…
I assume that Raji=Jolly in the second paragraph huh?
thug
The thing that worries me is that Jolly hasn’t owned up to what he did in any comments I’ve seen. He always treats it as an annoyance and something that somebody else is doing to him. The guy was outside a night club in the wee small hours of the morning with drugs, guns and gang members. And now he seems preturbed that he’s in trouble for the drugs.
So, I don’t know… don’t get me started, but this is not a guy that’s going to sacrifice for a team or do what it takes to succeed, or anything else. He’ll be unreliable. Then he’ll be gone.
huh?
has Jolly said something to indicate that?

I dunno man
He sure played pretty damn well all of last season…with these same charges hanging around.
As far as I can tell the only thing that makes him unreliable on the football field is that he probably won’t be on it for 1/4 of the games next year.

jolly
he made a bad decision and now has to pay for it. what really bothers me is that the fact that he acts as this is just an annoyance and that’s it’s no big deal. if their was a group of young men driving around with illegal drugs and a gun in the car in my neighborhood, i would hope the cops would arrest them as well.
Good point, and it really puzzles me as to why players do such dumb things like this. The guys making millions of dollars playing football, and he’s willing to risk losing that to drive around with a bunch of drugs and a gun in the car? Stupid.

Let's not get too carried away
It was cough syrup, and he’s not facing any gun charges. He wasn’t running kilos of coke like a mid-90’s Dallas Cowboy or something.

Let's not get too carried away
he was driving around in his low rider with well known gang members. a gun was found, one had majiauna and the codein. the problem is was the amt. of codein in the car. there was more codeine found than for just a joy ride. if it was just a small amt. this case would be over with just a fine. the prosecution bought a special instruement to measure the quantity of the codein in the dilluted liquid.
the drug laws in texas are no joke. if the drugs you are carrying go over a certain amt the punishment goes up greatly and that is why they brought in the special equipment to measure it.
metric system
this must be explained for some, so people will understand the amount that was found.
1 bottle of cough syrup contains 100 mg of codeine. the cops found 200 grams of codeine in the vehicle, that equates to 2,000 times the amount of codein found in 1 bottle of cough syrup.
that is why this is getting prosecuted. it was in jolly’s vehicle and i’m assuming none of the other accomplices fessed up to the codein being their’s, so they will get the same punishment.
nobody likes a rat.
I’d find some new friends, and leave the codeine at home, or better yet drink beer like most people.

Now that this is delayed the Packers are in a bit of a predicament.
