Super Bowl Open Thread: Colts Up 10-6 Over The Saints At Halftime
All the NFL team writers will be hanging out at the Super Bowl open thread at SB Nation. Please feel free to join us there.
Halftime Update. I'd be really frustrated if I were a Saints fan. Three potential scoring drives and only 6 points to show for it. No one has won the turnover battle yet, but the Colts are winning the red zone battle. The Saints had been very successful in the red zone this season, but not in this game.
What do you think of going for it on 4th and 1? I'm on the fence about it.

Enough of the Who Dat crap already
It quit being cute a week ago; now it’s horribly, horribly annoying.

I agree…its used WAY too much. Its like the Viking horn at a Viking game. They used to do it when they scored or had a HUGE play, now the guy runs for 3 yards and the blow the damn horn!!

Just from watching these two teams...half time thoughts....
…I don’t think we are that far off…We are not there yet, but these teams don’t scare me. And their offenses look much more normal on grass.
Next year could be interesting…

The differences
Both of these teams pass-protect fairly well (1 sack in the first half between the two teams), and neither D really gives up the big play.
Our guys can take the ball away better than either of these defenses, but it’s at the cost of a few 25+ yard plays a game.

Turnovers
The Saints were very good at creating turnovers in 2009.
But I agree that the Packers can play with either team. They would have been a tough matchup for the Saints because Grant could run against them. But the Packers need to get better depth in the secondary to avoid getting killed like they did against the Cardinals. Maybe that depth can come from within, the return of Pat Lee and a more experienced Brandon Underwood, but I’d love to see them add someone in the draft.

The other big difference I see
Penalties – these teams aren’t committing them.

Yeah, there were only like 4-5 flags the whole game, right? No holding calls either.

Thoughts thus far...
-I would like to not thank Janet Jackson for showing her boob. As cool as that may have been when I was strapping college youth, the unintended consequences of that outweigh anything posiTITe that came from that. Enough of the 50+ aging men with guitars…really enough.
-I didn’t even know there was a Super Bowl game tonight. I thought it was clearly won by the Minnesota Vikings already. Or at least that is what I was told…So is this the consolation game?
-This is not really an exciting Super Bowl outside of the onside kick. Both teams look just beyond clueless when the clock was under 2 minutes. I still don’t get the 4th and goal call, maybe momentum or giving your offense the “WE SUPPORT YOU” nod. But this is the Super Bowl, if you team needs that affirmation, what the heck…
-Those in it for the commercials, are you disappointed? There was a couple good ones, but nothing that just made me bust a gut.

Pretty sure the Vikings beat the Saints…or so my wife and friends have been telling me all week, so why are the Saints even playing in this game?!?!

I am with you on boob-gate…I know they don’t want to risk anything with modern artists. I get that…so don’t hire Gaga or T-Pain. But geez there are a GAZILLION bands you could hire that can still perform without walkers! This is getting F-ing ridiculous. The Who hasn’t been relevant for like 20 years!
Commercials…there were a few good ones. I laughed hard at the auto-tune Bud Light commercial, the dog collar one was amusing, and seeing Betty White getting tackled into the mud was a highlight of the night! There were a few other pretty decent ones but can someone PLEASE tell Budweiser that the Clydesdale commercials stopped being amusing in 2002???

Saints take over in good field postion, down by just one point. This might be one of those few “dramatic finish” super bowls…

+1
Although I thought Porter made a great play on that pick. He knew that with the blitz coming that Manning would get rid of it quick, would likely go to Wayne, and jumped the route so well. It really wasn’t that bad of a throw, but what a play on D

nice except...
Manning deserves to be ripped apart like Favre was 2 weeks ago. There is no double standard for int’s.
They want power. We want respect...
by SenorChuckles on Feb 8, 2010 12:35 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It's not so much a double standard
as it is a consideration of the circumstances of each INT. For instance, Manning’s pick was not a bad throw or a bad decision, per se. It was a great play by the defender on a play that he had studied repeatedly. Favre’s pick against the Saints was a horrible decision and not a very good throw. The only comparable thing between the two is the point of the game in which both plays were made.
FWIW, I thought that Rodgers’ pick on the first play of the Cardinals game was more along the line of Favre’s than Manning’s. It was a horrible decision to try to force it in there on a busted play when he could have easily thrown the ball out of bounds and moved on. Inexcusable, imo. The major difference I saw in the Favre and Rodgers picks were the point in the game when each occurred. The Manning pick was a bad play but it wasn’t on the same level as Favre’s or Rodgers’ if you ask me.

different levels indeed, but the int killed the colts chances.
Favre’s still had OT to play. Favre’s int was mind blowing, but Manning’s int took the wind out the colts. Maybe they can stop talking about Manning being one of the greatest QBs of all time.
They want power. We want respect...

Frankly
I’d be happy if they stopped talking about every player and every game as if it was ZOMG!!! THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!
Two weeks ago no one gave the Saints a chance in hell against the Colts because they did not play great offensively against the Vikings, ignoring how great they looked offensively the previous week against the Cardinals. Two weeks ago (hell, two days ago) Manning was crowned the greatest QB of all time who only lost games in which the Colts decided they didn’t need to win. Now, suddenly, Drew Brees is possibly the best QB playing today. Its overkill.

Just looking at your profile page.
Was wondering how you came to be a Packers fan?
by coltsfanawalt on Feb 8, 2010 9:07 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Because living in SoCal brings 5 options.
1) Raiders
2) 49ers
3) Rams
4) San Diego Super Chargers
5) Cowboys
Didn’t believe in any of those teams. So I kept watching football until some team excited me, and thats exactly what Brett Favre and the Pack did.

Makes sense.
Then just kept it going after Mr. Favre departed? I can relate. Actually, Favre originally brought me to liking the team, and strangely the events around his departure helped increase my support of the Packers. Go figure.
by coltsfanawalt on Feb 9, 2010 1:01 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Eh…I don’t totally agree though, the throw was still off target. It was NO where near where Wayne turned. Now maybe this was Wayne turning the wrong way or maybe it was Payton missing badly but Wayne had NO play on the ball. It was a VERY regrettable throw. Now I do agree that Favre (and Rodgers as you pointed out) were just altogether a stupid decision (whereas Peyton’s wasn’t a bad decision, just poorly executed)

The league needs to sort out the interaction...
… between the goal line rules and the completed catch rules which require a player to maintain control of the ball until they come to rest on the ground after a catch. I happen to agree with the call on the 2pt conversion with Lance Moore, but that ruling is in direct contradiction to the way 2 similar plays were handled during the regular season.
Ideally, they’d scrap the whole requirement that a player control the ball even after impact with the ground since all it’s done is create confusion among fans, players and refs as to what constitutes a catch anymore, let alone what’s an incomplete pass and what’s a catch and a fumble, but someone on the competition committee clearly thinks that rule is a good idea, so I’m not holding my breath. If they intend for the “plane of the goal line” rule to trump the rules which govern receptions elsewhere on the field, they should say so in the rules instead of leaving it up to the interpretation of the ref on the field.
What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Kinda anti climactic huh?? I thought it was amusing that there was SO much commotion and there wasn’t really much of a message at all. Seemed like a waste of money to me but thats not my call.

Way over-hyped. The opposition was making something out of nothing. We watched the commercial with anticipation and were scratching our heads afterwards. Much ado for nothing.

Yeah that is how I felt too. I was like, “THAT is what they were protesting???” haha I think most people were probably laughing about the big commotion on something like that. I did, however, see a quote from the head of NOW trying to make some big stink about how awful it was seeing his mom getting tackled and how it was some disgrace to women everywhere. Seems like they were going to find something to jump on no matter what was said!
