Lets have fun- You be the Lions GM for the upcoming draft
Alright, I figured I'd get something started so we can have a little fun. I know, the team I picked (Lions) happen to be a division rival, but what they do in the upcoming draft is actually more interesting to me than what St. Louis does with the #1 pick in the draft. For those of you living under a shell, Detroit signed DE Kyle Vanden Bosch and traded for DT Corey Williams. They already have their LE position situated with Jason Hunter starting (better run stuffer) and Avril playing on obvious passing down (he's quick). In the middle, they have Sammie Hill being their best run stuffer and he will start if not be apart of a solid rotation. So, the question is, who do you draft if you were in charge? You could draft LT Russell Okung, then move Jeff Backus to the LG position, thus solidifying their OL and protecting their investment in Matt Stafford. To contradict that though, he's not the best player on the board. You could draft S Eric Berry, but they spent their 2nd Round pick last year on Delmas and could probably get a Safety just as good as Delmas in the 2nd Round this year. Last but not least, you could draft Suh or McCoy to make Detroit's DL a very solid line. Suh could be the next Warren Sapp or he could flop. McCoy could be the next Kevin Williams or he could flop. One problem with drafting one of these guys is they would only play part time. The pro side of drafting one of them is they are the best player on the board.
Considering the Rams pick has a large effect in what Detroit does, lets have 2 scenarios to make this interesting. If the Rams draft QB Sam Bradford, who do you draft as the Detroit GM? If the Rams draft DT Ndamakong Suh, who do you draft?
Please explain why you choose to draft your specific player.
This is definately weird playing it out as a rival, but it stirs up a good debate and should be a little fun. Happy Debating!

If I were their GM:
Scenario #1: SUH!
Best Player to come down the pike in a long time according to the experts! You can always trade one of the other guys to pick up more picks if you want to! Or Trade player for player if you have too many defensive linemen!
Scenario #2: Lions say they like Backus… lol… but, I would draft the best LT in the Draft, Okung, as opposed to the 2nd best DL in McCoy
My first choice would’ve been to TRADE DOWN, but I wasn’t given that option! : ) The Lions have so many needs it isn’t funny… but, I doubt they can trade out of this position…
Would’ve been more fun playing this game with the Packers though! LOL : )
Go Pack!!
I'd draft Suh and find a guard in the 3rd
cornerback in the second probably. I’d trade down for Berry for the right deal but that’s not going to come along.
lions draft
1st scenario…..i would call matt millen up for some advice, not on drafting, but on how the hell he kept his job for so long. pointers would be appreciated. after the talk i would draft Dez Bryant. why not, it seemed to work in the past.
2nd scenario……if suh is gone, i would draft Okung. the best LT coming out, he will protect your franchise for 10 years. “fat guys win football games”
If the Rams take Bradford they take Suh no questions. Sure, they have needs at the OT positions but Suh is the best DT prospect in the past 30-40 years. You just can’t pass something like that up, and Schwartz, being the defensive minded coach he is, won’t.
If the Rams take Suh they take McCoy. He isn’t far behind Suh, and Schwartz wants to build a good defense.
See the only thing with taking the big DTs
everyone keeps saying they are the best prospect to come for years. But it seems like that line gets used every year. What was Raji (09), Glenn Dorsey (08), and Omobi Okoye (07) they were all overall top 10 picks at the DT position. In 6 combined seasons the three guys have only 219 tackles and 10 sacks. So does that mean they are all busts? No not necessarily.. They play at a position that is not on the field every snap on defense. And as vitally important they are I just dont like to spend upwards around $30-40 mil on someone who only plays 40-50% of the reps. And then I think they are at a higher level for being a bust. For some of the bigger guys they have relied on their sheer size (i.e. 315+ lbs) to surpass their opponents. The NFL really weeds out the guys who were not doing all the lifting and conditioning throughout their college careers. And they seem to have a higher injury risk carrying around that extra weight.
So to me, if I were the Lions GM I would go after Okung. I would be much more willing to pay someone who will be in every snap top dollar rather than paying a guy that much for only half the snaps. And that would reassure the franchise QB

That makes sense, and I don’t think it would be a bad move for them to take Okung by any means but watching Suh literally go through double and triple teams was enough to sell me. Maybe McCoy could be hyped up a little bit but seeing Suh play in college I just don’t see how there is any way he doesn’t turn out to be an elite DT and probably the best one in the league.

That's exactly what most people around here (Detroit) think they should do
And what people think they will do, which for most of the last decade, was usually not the same thing.
Suh or McCoy
The Lions should take whoever is available, but there is still a ways to go until the podium. I could see then taking Okung to help Stafford.
signings
I think the signings of Vanden Bosch and the trade for Corey Williams makes it unlikely they draft either Suh or McCoy… Both are 3 technique DT not NT, and if you just traded a draft pick fot Williams, another 3-tech DE, your drafting the same position. You might be able to play Suh at NT, but it would limit his impact as a player!!!
I see the Lions taking Okung… They take him as a LT, and move Backus to RT of OG and make 2 positions better at once!!!
I asked some Detroit fans about that
Apparently, that’s what Swartz likes to run and what Detroit has always run. They like having both of their DT’s being 3 technique DT’s and their FS and SS are basically 2 of the same, no difference. Kind of surprised me, but they have a little different of a defense and it’s very aggressive. It kind of makes sense with how aggressive it is though. They want pass rushers.

IF
If thats the case then taking Suh still makes sense. Course from what I have read, McCoy is considered the better pass rusher over Suh, so maybe they go that route.
They all seem to be sold on Suh at POD. If Suh is taken by St. Louis, then they all have mixed feelings on McCoy, Okung, and Eric Berry.
If St. Louis drafts Sam Bradford, then the remaining picks in the Top 5 are pretty easy to identify. If St. Louis drafts Ndamakong Suh, then you get all the different possible scenarios and debates.

Its obvious
Lions draft Dez Bryant #2, he holds out until week 4, comes in out of shape and tears an ACL in his first game. Oh wait, it is what would I do not what would Millen have done.
I would trade the #2 to the Pack for the 23, Hawk and Jolly so the Pack can take Suh to play LDE. The Lions then take the best available OL at 23
"I agree but dont agree"
LMAO! Good One Jugger! : )
On that line of thought… How about this…
Lions Trade The #2 to the Pack for the 23rd Pick, + Bush, Barbre, Colledge, & Hawk… WE TAKE OKUNG… and the Lions take Iupati @ #23 to play behind Colledge! LOL Sorry couldn’t resist! : )
Go Pack!!
