Will The Packers Resign RT Mark Tauscher?

I've assumed RT Mark Tauscher would be resigned for 2010 because it appears he wants to keep playing, and last season was a disaster without him. But he remains unsigned and Mike Vandermause is penciling in OL T.J. Lang at right tackle. Lang is a good player, but I'd rather he provide depth as a backup next season because there's no one else behind him on the depth chart.

The draft is one option because It's a great one for offensive lineman, and it looks like Idaho's G Mike Iupati (as one example) will be a good one. There isn't much left in free agency beyond Tauscher either. The only offensive lineman it looked worth pursuing was OL Rex Hadnot, but the Cardinals just signed him for 3 years and $9 million

Can the Packers afford to go into next season without Tauscher? Or is it time to draft for depth and let the Lang era begin.

Definitely sign Tauscher. He played good for us last year and appeared to still have some left (at least more then Clifton.). Having him sign a 2-3 year contract seems appropriate as he probably has 2, maybe 3 years left. If he can play for at least the next two years (I know it’s possible he doesn’t) we can have Lang play LG (his natural positon), and can draft a guy and develop him. If for some reason Tauscher goes down then we put Lang in there, and move Colledge to LG.

Re-Sign Tausch!!

Agree with you packall… Lang is a LG… Not a RT! IMO… Have to have Tausch… If only to start the season until we find his replacement! We can’t have LANG as back-up for RT, LT, & LG on the depth chart! I for one believe he should be our Starting LG for the next 8-10 years & keep Colledge for a back-up! If Colledge is healthy… and Lang plays 16 games at his natural position, Colledge could spell him if need be! We must find our LT & RT of the future this year! IMO

Go Pack!

by Bird Dog Uni on Mar 12, 2010 7:49 AM CST up reply actions

I agree

Lang should be our starting LG, and our backup RT and LT.

I would like to resign Tauscher after the draft to see what happens. It really depends upon how the drafts plays out.

Starters

I would like to see Lang at RT this season, maybe move to LG next year. It depends on Giacomini… He will be the starter at RT soon, hopefully this season! Lets remember that Rivera was on the bench for 2 season, and didn’t play at all till his 3rd. Went on to become a Pro Bowler multiple times. Don’t be surprised if Giacomini starts this year or next! Giacomini and Rivera were both developmental picks!

Barbre and Wahle are almost identical too. Both draft based on outstanding athletic ability who bombed as starters. Heck, Wahle lost his starting job TWICE, before finding a home in his 4th season!

Everyone thinks a draft pick is a bust if they don’t start in the 1st or 2nd season!!! OL take a couple years to develop into starters, unless they were 1st rd or 2nd rd picks you shouldn’t expect them to start till yr 3 at the earliest!

by Strohman on Mar 12, 2010 10:43 AM CST up reply actions

I think your right about Gianconmini. I have read a bunch of articles hinting that Gianconmini is going to get his chance this year. Obviously we don’t know much about him but some of the scouts takes on him back in 2007 was that he was a project OT who has good potential in the future. The future is now, and like you I think we’ll see Breno get his chance. I still would like Tauscher signed just in case.

by packallday555 on Mar 12, 2010 11:39 AM CST up reply actions

Wasn’t laughing at you for that… Might have been something else! I definitely think Breno and even Barbre have a chance to become good starters yet. Wahle lost a starting job twice before he found a home at LG in his 4th season.

by Strohman on Mar 12, 2010 11:53 AM CST up reply actions

Ok, I take that back

Sign Tauscher for depth, but still draft a RT. The thought of having Lang move to RT if our starter goes down and having Colledge start at LG just makes me want to rip the hair out of my skull. Colledge should be nothing more than a backup, although I know he’s getting another chance this year to prove himself. Just as next year will be another chance for him, and the year after that, and the year after that. As you can see…I really don’t like Darryn Colledge.

Sign him now!! O line is our most pressing issue…with boy wonder mullet head in Minny and Peppers with Bears we need him now more than ever!! Lets not send a boy to do a mans job!! Sign Tauscher!!

Mark Tauscher, Etc.

Keep Tauscher! He can definitely still play!
And please use “resign” to mean “quit” and “re-sign” to mean “sign again.” Those would be their proper usages.Thank you.

As far as our OT situation goes...

I’m not too worried. I know that most Packer fans are worried because of all the sacks we gave up last year. When Tauscher came back and when Clifton was healthy, they were a big reason why our OL was better. On top of that though, our play calling was a lot better. It seemed that in the beginning of the year, our offense was more of a vertical passing attack. After the TB game, we went back to the West Coast offense and got rid of the ball quickly. If we can stick to that, we shouldn’t have to worry too much about Vanden Bosch, Peppers, and Allen.

With that in mind, I’m comfortable drafting our RT in the 2nd Round and resigning Mark Tauscher for depth. Tauscher wants to stay in GB, and he proved that he can still play and he is a very loyal player. Because of that, we should reward him with another opportunity. Sign him for a 2-3 year contract.

can't have enough depth

Re-sign the man! Nau!

He might start, he might not. But he’s clearly the glue that held us together last season, and would go a long way toward doing the same in 2010. Wasn’t he rumored to be a future coach anyway?

by swilldog on Mar 12, 2010 9:50 AM CST reply actions

too much business

I’d like to see Tauscher re-signed. He did well enough last year, that if he doesn’t get signed someone else will pick him up. He probably won’t be available if we have another Barbre-like disaster.

That said, you do have to pay all the players that you have. Tauscher is not the future, and his price tag might be too high. From a business perspective it doesn’t make much sense to sign Tauscher to a big contract until you know better what you have in Lang and Giacomini at RT. Lang seems to be somewhat Tauscher-like; solid, if not outstanding; hard-working, if not supremely talented, so he may fill in for a year.

by MikeDB on Mar 12, 2010 11:14 AM CST reply actions

OK... If Lang fills in at RT... How can he be our back-up for Cliffy?

I just don’t get how people think Lang can be 3 places at once…? He can’t be our starting LG & RT… Though that would be cool if we could clone him… He can’t play RT and be Clif’s back-up @ LT!! He can’t play RT and be Colledge’s back-up at LG? Right now BRENO G. and A. Barbre are not good enough to start anywhere on the line… Correct?

LT ~ Clif ~ Who is his back-up? Draft? or Lang?
LG ~ Who is our starting LG? Colledge I hope not! Spitz? Lang? IMO Lang ought to start at LG!
  C ~ Spitz ~ With Wells as Back-up?
RG ~ Sitton ~ With who as Back-up? Smith?
RT ~ Lang ~ With who as Back-up? Breno G. or A. Barbre?

I just can’t seem to get it through peoples heads that LANG can’t be everywhere… and that we need a LT, RT, and DEPTH! I give up…

by Bird Dog Uni on Mar 12, 2010 12:02 PM CST up reply actions

depth chart

Interesting…
I’d go with…

Clifton ~ Draft, then Colledge (LT depth is the most glaring need on the team)
Spitz ~ Barbre (doesn’t have the feet to play in space, but maybe can do something at LG)
Wells ~ Smith
Sitton ~ Barbre, Smith, Colledge (This is okay unless all three interior starters go down)
Lang ~ Tauscher, Giacomini (Lang’s the future & Tausch will make us all sleep better)

by Curly Lambeau on Mar 12, 2010 1:05 PM CST up reply actions

Lang and signing Tauscher

From everything that I’ve read from MM and the Packers, it seems that, at least for the moment, they have Lang projected as the possible replacement for Tauscher. Some fans are saying that they would like to see him at LG, but the fans don’t make that decision.

On the line we have 2 1/2 set positions. For the next 1-2 years Clifton is back at LT. Sitton should be our RG for the next several years. And Wells is an almost lock at C after last year’s good showing.

So we have LG and RT open for more intense competition, and we have 5-6 players competing for those 2 positions: Colledge, Spitz, Barbre, Lang, Giacomini, and maybe Tauscher. I expect TT to take a tackle as a future replacement for Clifton in the first couple rounds, and add another lineman in a later round. With so many linemen competing for a couple spots, you have to figure that some of these guys won’t be Packers next year.

Lang has a virtual lock on making the team after what he showed last year.

Spitz, playing both guard and center, is valuable as a back-up, even if he doesn’t start. His back issues could come into play, especially if Campen and MM believe that Dietrich-Smith has potential and can fill in.

Colledge has got lots of experience and has shown that he can play in the NFL (something that Barbre and Breno haven’t shown yet), even he isn’t exactly Pro Bowl material. However, I also think that Colledge could be valuable as ‘trade bait’ to help fill other needs.

Barbre, after last year’s disaster, has got a lot to prove in order to make the team. Even with his athleticism and potential, he’s got to show it in pre-season games if he’s going to stay with the team. I would be surprised if the coaching staff doesn’t see him almost exclusively as a guard prospect now. He could compete for the LG spot.

Breno is going to have show his potential to more than TT, I believe, in order to make the team this year. He may get another year of grace, if MM, Campen or Philbin are high on him and he’s not quite ready yet. They won’t be able to hide him on the practice squad; there are simply too many teams with worse OL problems than the Packers.

I think that they will bring back Tauscher, and he’ll start at RT. I think it is a good football decision. It will make the business decision about who to keep or cut more difficult when the time comes, but it is a good football decision for the coming year. And that means that Colledge, Barbre, Spitz and maybe Lang will most likely be competing for one spot, LG.

by MikeDB on Mar 13, 2010 11:28 AM CST up reply actions

Barbre

People might snicker at the idea of Barbre at guard, but I think it’s the only alternative to cutting the SOB. He looked just unbelievably awful at RT last year. I mean, to the point where you ask if there’s a future for the guy.

by Curly Lambeau on Mar 12, 2010 1:08 PM CST reply actions

Barbre

Thats what everyone said about Mike Wahle too… Till he became a starter at LG in his 4th year, and after losing a starting job TWICE!!! Barbre was poor last year, no denying that, but he’ll get another chance this season or next to become a starter! He came from a D2 school, thats a HUGE jump in competition!!!

Patience!!! THompson knows you have to DEVELOP OL, unless you can get a 1sr rd pick on OL, they don’t usually start right away. SInce we haven’t been in a position to take a really good OL in the 1st rd of any draft, you have to resort to developmental players!!!

by Strohman on Mar 12, 2010 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

Hey Stroh ~

I’m all for giving Barbre all the chances in the world… and he couldn’t play LG any worse than Colledge did last year…

Looking at Curly’s depth chart has me even more convinced we need some serious help…

Smith as Well’s back-up… I sure hope not!!

Even if every One of these guys stays healthy… Which is probably a big if… This isn’t a line I’m comfortable with… I’m all for developing players… but, when they don’t develop… We are sitting here with a starting 5 that can’t get hurt… 1 decent back-up in Tauscher, that currently is an UFA!

My point is: Something has to be done… We have NO BACK-UP Left Tackle…

We’re going to have Barbre as back-up to both our guards?

We don’t have a real RT back-up… unless we re-sign Mark Tauscher… and supposedly

Smith as our back-up center… LMAO… Has SMITH even gotten on the field? I don’t know? I thought he was suppose to be a Guard? I’ve never even seen him on the field in Preseason!?

Guess I’m the only one worried about this scenario… God help us if we have even one sprained ankle… let alone an ACL…

by Bird Dog Uni on Mar 12, 2010 2:04 PM CST up reply actions

Actually....

They didn’t focus Barbre on LG last year. Last year they just pushed him in at RT. It was the year before that he worked out at LG and that’s when he lost the job to Colledge. That was also the year that Colledge was our best and most consistent O-lineman by the by. Funny how people keep forgetting that little tid bit when the drop him to the bottom of the depth chart.

Tauscher

Absolutely should sign Tauscher! He saved the season for The Pack and got them up and running again. It would be a slap in the face to let him go!. They should have gotten rid of Barbre and Colledge …. We still need the experience that Tauscher brings to the team! Go Pack Go

by whooya on Mar 12, 2010 2:30 PM CST reply actions

Be careful what you wish for

Once again, in 2008 Colledge was the most consistent and productive member of the line. That’s why he wasn’t challenged last year. Typically what has happened with this guy is that when he’s pushed he responds. He’s probably one of those players that needs a guy behind him to keep him looking over his shoulder and performing. As for Barbre, he’s an athlete and just needs to find the right home. Right now they both come cheap so why push them out?

by PackApologist on Mar 12, 2010 2:46 PM CST up reply actions

Whoever pointed out that we still have Smith needs to get a cookie

I know I’ve said this before here, but we don’t need more interior help! Right now between Spitz (who people keep forgetting for some reason), Wells, Sitton, Colledge(who has produced good and bad, perhaps more bad than good, but still enough good to let the man compete), Barbre (who could be an interesting fit at G, and Smith (competent C who could be a great project) it seems we are falling all over interior guys.

What we need is a LT. The only guy on our roster that fits that bill is falling apart and getting overpaid, but we still love him as Packer fans. That’s what we need to worry about.

As for Taush? Sign him. This position isn’t a pressing need at the moment because of Breno, Lang, and I think even Spitz has worked out at position before. Hell, who knows they planned Collegde at LT maybe he could surprise us and be a solid RT. Tackle was the position he played in college.

I know we love Tausch, he lives our dream, but I just don’t get the sense that he or the Packers are in much of a hurry to get things done. Give it time and it will work out. There’s not any smoke of other teams giving him a big look. It doesn’t seem he wants to play anywhere else at this point. People from the Packers have publically said they want him back (MM and A-Rod come to mind), so it will all come together in time.

continunity

that’s what the o-line needs. not musical chairs that we’ve been witnessing over the past 5 years. do some of you realize that the packers have had a different 5 starting the last 5 years.

the packs best o-line, imo, was cliffy, wahle, flannigan, rivera, tausch. why is that?
well, they played(started) at their positions for at least 3 years. they knew what each other was doing and became a cohesive unit. put the player at one position and leave them their, the pack has to develope some continunity in the line.

Why wait?

Tauscher is not only a good re-sign at RT, but he’s also someone who teammates obviously like and trust to do a good job. Chemistry is such an underrated part of this discussion – you read so much in the sports press about players tearing into one another over lack of it or just plain lack of respect.

I totally agree with Brandon on Lang being a good depth tackle. He will be a good starter – but right now, an experienced player is just what the Pack needs to keep them in the hunt for next season.

Depth Chart ~ The way I see it!

LT Chad Clifton LG T.J. Lang C Jason Spitz RG Josh Sitton RT Mark Tauscher * (UFA)
Back-ups ~ Draft LG Colledge C Wells RG Barbre RT Breno G.

Smith ~ is a possible back-up to play G/C but, we have no idea at this point if he can…?

Daniels ~ Same thing… may develop into a back-up?

Wells ~ Excellent back-up for Spitz @ Center!

You guys are telling me that you’re comfortable with Colledge, Barbre, & Breno G. as our Back-ups right this minute? Colledge can play… no doubt… at times! He couldn’t get it done in over-time against the Cards though could he? Barbre… We know he couldn’t play RT last year… Breno… Don’t see him contributing a whole lot right now!

Not to mention Chad is on his last knees… Mark (Currently not even on the Roster!) is getting old… He was what brought the line back from oblivion… So… You guys are telling me we’ve got enough interior line depth… Maybe… if Colledge, Barbre, & Breno don’t have to play a down… Smith is yet unproven… and we really have no viable options for back-ups for either Tackle position…

I’m not saying the SKY IS FALLING… but, we have some very LOW CLOUDS on the horizon if we have even 1 injury! We have some serious holes to fill… by September… That’s all I’m saying!

Go Pack!!

by Bird Dog Uni on Mar 12, 2010 4:09 PM CST reply actions

sky

Sure sounds like you think the sky is falling… I think the OL will come together just fine if we find a LT to replace Clifton. You apparently don’t think ANY of the backups are going to be worth a damm or develop into starters. At least thats how it seems…

If we draft a couple guys, they will be BEHIND the guys we have now. How is that going to save us??

by Strohman on Mar 12, 2010 4:34 PM CST up reply actions

Dude ~ I'm not saying they won't develop...

I’m saying, "As of right now… 12 March 2010… Our O LINE is not in very good shape!!

I’m not saying Barbre might not be able to play LG this year! I hope to GOD he’s a stud there for 10 years… but, he couldn’t play RT last year… and unless he improves immensely… He won’t be able to this year…

I believe Tauscher will be re-signed… So if Lang Plays RT (Still don’t think he’s a Tackle) we will have Tausch to back him up! Which is a start!

My Point being… right now we have a lot more questions than answers!! I’m sure we will address a couple of these questions through the draft and if TT needs to do something come August or September… I’m sure he’ll do it!

I do have faith we’ll get this sorted out… I would just like to see the Clouds Clear and the SUNSHINE before September! : )

Go Pack!!

by Bird Dog Uni on Mar 12, 2010 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

overly pessimistic

If Colledge doesn’t start and he is a back-up at guard, he will be one of the better 2nd team guards in the league. Yes, he is questionable and inconsistent as a full-time starter for a play-off team, but the guy has started around 70 NFL games. How many back-up offensive linemen could make that claim?

We will most likely be able to count on 2 OL draft picks for back-up roles. Spitz should be back, and if Tauscher is signed we’ll have an abundance of linemen, meaning that at least 1 (maybe 2) of our present line will have to go. We won’t have the best OL in the NFC, but it will be more than adequate.
