Collins and Pickett signed to long term contracts!
Thompson made the announcement today that both players have been re-signed thru 2013. No numbers on the Collins deal that I saw but Pickett's looks like 4 years, $28 million.
Regarding Collins: "The Packers always try to be proactive in our discussions with our current players and we are pleased we were able to come to an agreement with Nick," said Thompson. "Nick has been an impact player for us, and we look forward to having him continue his career as a Packer."
Regarding Pickett: "We have continued to talk to Ryan and his representatives and are pleased we were able to sign Ryan to this extension," said Thompson. "He has been a key part of our success on defense, and we look forward to having Ryan be a part of our future in Green Bay."
UPDATE: Collins deal is three years, $23.4 million Link here.
UPDATE 2 from Brandon: The Press-Gazette has Collins at four years, $26.7 million. I wrote my thoughts about it in the comments.

It needs to be on the front page stat – this is HUGE news.
Now we can return to talking about O-Line, O-Line, and more O-Line.
I wonder what the Collins contract looks like gulp

Below is a link with a bit of breakdown on Pickett's contract.

He also makes a good point about frontloading both contracts during the uncapped year.
TBD
I dunno
What if a new CBA isn’t done after this year the salary cap doesn’t come back? There’s rumors of a work stoppage if that happens. The questions of the day are:
- Does the wording in Collins’ contract specify “through 2013”, or “3 more years”?
- If there is a lockout for a season, would Nick still owe us a season, or is it burned?
If it’s burned, then we made a huge mistake. All these front-loaded contracts that could have been spread out would cost us a ton of money. Just another point of view.
Don't get me started...
I’ve been trying to light a fire about the O Line since the day the season ended! Everyone agrees we need a LT… but they also seem to think that will fix everything!
Right now I would almost argue that RT is our biggest need… Since Cliffy’s been re-signed and Tauscher hasn’t!! While Spitz, Wells, and Sitton are solid… Colledge had a poor year… The Barbre experiment at RT was a colossus disaster… Breno G. hasn’t shown he can play at all…
Injuries are rampant and we have one bright spot in Lang that everyone thinks will take over at RT which leaves us with no quality depth at any OL position! Everyone says don’t worry it’ll all work out… Well it won’t work out unless something is done! Granted it’s a long way until September… so we got that going for us…
Go Pack!!
We can all panic after the draft
It’s during the draft that we start making some noise…..well, I hope this continues…

Very nice
Awesome to see both of those guys get long term deals, and good prices…not cheap, not overly expensive for good players at those positions….good for both sides.
Siefert’s blog has a list of the “core” vet players who are signed and unsigned. Of the unsigned guys the only ones who i really care about long term are tramon, and possibly Jolly (trial) and Bigby. Seeing Chillar on that list at 4/21 is kinda sick though :-(
On another note, perhaps the big bucks at 4 years means Raji will be either taking over for Jolly or be the first sub in on the line at all positions, similar to last year. It would be nice to get more impact out of the 8th pick than a rotation guy but at least it gives our line high quality at all times.
As much as I dislike TT’s moves on our OLine and in FA, he’s done a great job drafting and signing those picks.
Great News
That’s the highlight of our offseason so far. I’m glad we signed them both to an extension. I wish Collins deal would have been over the course of a longer term, but I recall several players that got that and just stopped playing. This put me in a good mood today though.

I'm completely surprised
I took last night off and the Packers go and sign Nick Collins to a long-term deal after stalling with the guy for at least the past year. It helped that the Giants had recently signed S Antrel Rolle to the richest deal ever for a safety as a comp. Collins should get paid similar since he’s a 26 year old, two-time Pro Bowl safety. The Press-Gazette pointed out the amount is smaller than Rolle’s, but for 4-years vs. 5-years, which is probably what the 26 year-old Collins wanted so he could potentially strike another big extension before he turns 30. It’s a lot of money, but I can’t imagine a free agent I would rather the Packers sign over the next couple years than Collins.
Pickett’s deal is a little rich, and longer than the 3 year, $21 million deal the Steelers gave NT Casey Hampton, but it’s for $1 million less ($11 million vs. $10 million) in guaranteed money. They’re similar players at this point in their careers, Hampton was better a couple seasons ago, and just as important to each team, so this is another case of the Packers paying market value for a player worth keeping.
The Press-Gazette reported that Collins is getting $14 million in 2010, while Pickett $10 million in 2010, to go along with the front loaded contract recently given to LT Chad Clifton. The Packers are taking full advantage of the 2010 uncapped year.
And keeping the chemistry intact as well
which is equally important.

This is nice
The timing of this was perfect for the Pack.
Collins had no leverage owing to his restricted status. He was signed through the coming year. So, he could either sign a reasonable contract now (Collins’ deal is similar to Rolle, but don’t forget that he’s way better than Rolle), or he could look forward to trying his luck at a hold-out during a lock-out. $6mil/year is not bad at all for a legitimate two-time probowl safety (Collins was actually selected, not a later addition).
So… VERY good signing. …and Collins should be happy too. The team could’ve low-balled him big-time, and they didn’t. It shows respect for his abilities and a desire to form a long-term relationship.
Don't forget
Collins was playing nice through this whole thing. Last year he didn’t hold out, he did all that was asked and more and had a good year. Hell, he was even putting shows of good faith out this year, so it’s great to see the Pack put out a show of good faith as well.

Too much green beer?
Some people say the glass is half empty, some say half full. I say, are you going to drink that?
