Raiders Acquire OLB Kamerion Wimbley From The Browns

LB Kamerion Wimbley had 11 sacks in his 2006 rookie season. He hasn't reached that level again, but he did have 6.5 sacks last season. At age 26, he's a young outside linebacker who has shown the ability to rush the passer. He sounds like someone the Green Bay Packers should have been interested in. Instead the Browns traded him to the Raiders for a late 3rd round pick. From ESPN's Bill Williamson:

He is not a bad player, but he may not be an ascending player, either. Wimbley has to show he can still improve. He will have to transition from the 3-4 that Cleveland ran to the 4-3 in Oakland. He is supposed to play outside linebacker, but he could also possibly play defensive end.

Is he someone the Packers should have traded for? Or is Wimbley an overrated player they should have avoided?

Not worth it

I’d rather spend our 1st Round pick on an OLB, 2nd on an OT, and use our 3rd on a CB. He just hasn’t gotten it done yet. He has steadily been declining each year.

Not Disappointed

He was the Brown’s AJ Hawk. Not terrible, but he’ll never live up to this draft selection.

His rookie season wasn't enough?

15 sacks right off the bat is pretty impressive…

sacks

It was 11 sacks his rookie year… And he hasn’t approached it since! I’ll pass…

I wouldn’t have given a third for him. Hawk for Wimbley straight up would have piqued my interest though.

plus our third and the Raiders third are gonna be in two different area codes so obviously Cleveland would have taken the Raiders deal even if we did offer our third rounder.

not really

The raiders had two third rounder. Traded the later round pick. I think 85th overall. I think Green Bay picks at 86th overall if I’m not mistaken. I still think it was the right move to pass on this guy though.

No biggie

He’ll be better in the 4-3. He’s got speed, but not great at stopping the run or dropping back in coverage. He will get sacks—probably at DE. A lot like Kampman. Probably not the best fit for our needs now in the 3-4.

Who Cares?

why is this front page news. This is an average LB, and a transaction that does not involve the Packers in any way.

Honestly

I’m pretty bummed out the Packers didn’t go for him. Wimbley has a ton of potential..I think the comparison to Hawk is unfair. I would have given a third rounder in a heartbeat. Not only is he a proven 3-4 linebacker, it’s very possible he was a player who’s stats kinda got muddled because he was playing for a team like the Browns. Long story short, I’m disappointed, but drafting in the 3rd round isn’t a terrible plan either.

Really?

I mean really? Pretty bummed about getting an average player like this?

by PackApologist on Mar 15, 2010 7:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I feel completely the opposite. Wimbley isn’t any use in coverage so basically his job on every down is to pressure the quarterback; except with a 1.6 10 yard split time he’s not even all that fast. During his first season he racked up 11 sacks but he was playing with Willie McGinest which probably inflated his numbers. With him I just don’t see any potential since unfortunately he falls in that category of guys who are too small to be defensive ends and too slow to be the prototypical OLB in a 3-4 defense.

Contrary to most I still see hope in AJ Hawk. I feel like Inside LB in the 3-4 is a very demanding position. Given some time to learn he could definitely fill the position well. To me he just didn’t look very decisive in games last season mostly he was slow in reacting to the ball. His inability to chase down smaller guys is always going to be a problem but I could see him eventually being fairly useful against the run and in zone blitz situations. And yes I know he was pretty useless at both this season.

Brady is that you? nice to see ya sticking up for your brother-in-law, but their’s a large sample on hawk now and the film don’t lie. he doesn’t play physica, can’t shed blocks, slow of foot, more of a read and react player not a downhill attacking LB and this was seen in both the 4-3 and 3-4.

he was a very good college lb, but imo, a below average lb in the nfl. heck we released a better inside lb a few years ago that has been starting for the bears in hunter hillenmeyer. what was he a 6th round pick?

p.s. good luck in denver, it’s a better situation for you. less expectations.

I don’t think he is below average but he hasn’t been anything more the average/solid. He shows glimpses from time to time but he just hasn’t been able to put anything together. I still think we should trade him. Bishop and Chillar could both be better then Hawk at ILB, and we could probably get a 3rd rounder for Hawk. He was a good 4-3 OLB and a team running that system could be interested in him. Could be hard though with his huge contract.

It would've been an ok move to trade a 3rd rounder for him

I’m sure Kevin Greene would’ve been able to make something of him

havner

well you can add T.E. to the positions that we can use another body. havner was arrested for a DUI after crashing his kawasaki motorcycle over the weekend. plus he broke his shoulder blade. just goes to show you, that some of these guys ain’t very smart.

havner was lucky to even to be on a nfl roster. making over 500,000 a year for a 3rd string T.E. and you make that poor choice. i’m guessing he can fall back on his college education to make that much money. that would explain the accident at 2:45 a.m. and not wearing a helmet as well. brilliant.
