Packer Related: Monday Combine News, Defensive Line and Linebackers

A couple of mid-round linebackers led the way with their 40 times. I was interested to see how Michigan DE Brandon Graham and Clemson OLB Ricky Sapp would do, and Graham was injured and Sapp had an unremarkable 4.70 40 time. Neither event shuts the door on them, but neither seemed to cement themselves as a late 1st round pick either. I'd like to have read more about Georgia Tech DE Derrick Morgan, but he pulled out of the bench press drill and was not interviewed by the media.

As noted by Tom Pelissero, USC DE Everson Griffin is an interesting prospect:

Southern Cal's Everson Griffin -- whom the Packers' Clay Matthews replaced as a starter early in the 2008 season -- ran the 40 in 4.66 seconds, only two-hundredths off Dexter Davis of Arizona State's pace (4.64) for defensive ends. Griffin put up 32 bench reps and had a 36 1/2-inch vertical.

There has already been some Griffin to the Packers in the 1st round speculation going on.

But DE is'nt a need!

ARGH! This is already a young talented team, that is on the rise. At this point the draft strategies must change. No longer should TT draft best player available, but draft for our needs. This team is a couple of position upgrades away from being a Super-Bowl contender.

Don’t worry so much: Griffen would be slotted to compete with Brad Jones at LOLB were he drafted.

He’s a DE in a 4-3 scheme, but a linebacker in a 3-4. He’s about the same height and build as Aaron Kampman.

Relax man

A DE in a 4-3 is usually going to be an OLB in the 3-4, and in Everson’s case, this is true. 3-4 DE’s are usually 4-3 DT’s. They play different roles.

Mays

Who cares… He’s a workout warrior!!! Everybody knew he would test very well, but look at his game film!!! He SUCKS in coverage!!! Ever heard of Roy Williams?? He made a Pro Bowl for Dallas as an in the box safety, but teams figured him out very soon after!!! He is a liability in coverage!!! Mays in Roy Williams re-incarnate!!! So he can run fast and lift alot and he’s big… BUt when you put the game film on he is a liability!!!

5 Int’s in 4 college seasons!!! Tells you all you need to know about him as a player!!! He Sucks!!!

Although when he had an elite safety on his side, Roy Williams played at a VERY high level…its when he was the main guy that he started to suck. If paired with Collins he could be good and maybe that would be the case with this guy??

by TrevorR on Mar 2, 2010 7:10 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe

Maybe it would, though I don’t think so… And you would then have to put Collins in a position where he had to play strict coverage. THat would tremendously limit what Collins is best at, being a playmaker!!! Packers need a Safety opposite Collins that can be counted on to make the plays and provide the coverage necessary, so Collins can be the playmaker!

According to the same sources Joe Haden had a mediocre 40 time, I have some hope that he could fall far enough for the pack to trade up to get him though that could never happen.

This is why Graham won't be drafted by the Packers.

Injury concerns? Puh-leeze. We don’t want another Jamal Reynoulds.

Hughes

Anyone see how Jerry Hughes tested?!! He was very high in the 40… 4.69… He was 4th in the 3 cone drill at 6.99 and he had the best time in the 20 yrd shuttle…

THe shuttle runs are especially important cuz they give a measure of how well and athlete can change directions and how agile he is… Bench can be improved by wt room work, but you can’t really make a better athlete, he either is or he isn’t!!!

And Hughes is definitely the excellent athlete needed to play LOLB opposite Matthews! Not only that but he played Left side his college career, so he wouldn’t have to learn to rush all over again, from a different side!

You make an interesting case for him, and with it looking more and more like the top 4-5 OTs will all be gone by the 15th pick of the draft what else would we go after? Cb’s after Haden are 2nd round talent and I would guess Spiller will be gone.

If we do take a OLB I hope it’s hughes or Sapp. I like Graham but the elite 3-4 OLB’s all have great athleticism and I’m not sure he does.

Hey Stroh ~ You like Hughes??? Never would've guessed it! LOL

You’ve beat that drum almost as much as I beat the LT drum… :) lol I just hope we get the BEST AVAILABLE PLAYER and it is also one our biggest needs when #23 comes up!!!! : ) Wouldn’t that be nice… Would love to have our pick at #23 be a LT, or OLB, or CB… Someone who was suppose to be in the top 20 and fell to us… So when TT picks it’s obvious to everyone who our pick will be… Example… Bulaga, Hughes, Wilson ~ Someone we’ve all been clamoring for falls into our lap and everyone is CLOSE TO HAPPY… I know we won’t please everyone with our 1st pick… but… at least if it’s one of our big needs… Most people will at least understand!

GO PACK!!!!!

LT

Hey, dont get me wrong… I am all for a LT!!! I just don’t think one of the top guys fall to us. I wouldn’t take Brown at 23, but would trade down. Bulaga, Williams, Davis, all would be worth the #23 pick, I just don’t see them being there. And I would take them over Hughes… I wouldn’t touch Campbell, till the 2nd… Let some other team blow a 1st on him… To me he’s a BUST waiting to happen! IF I have to pick between Brown, Cambell and Hughes at 23, I take Hughes…

I think a Top playmaker or LT will have to fall to 23, otherwise I see Thompson trading down!
