Ex-Packer Michael Montgomery Signs With The Vikings
I'm glad to see former Green Bay Packers DE Michael Montgomery is returning to a 4-3 defense, but it's too bad he'll be playing for the Vikings. According to the Press-Gazette, he's probably signed for the veteran minimum of $630,000.
Just as DE Aaron Kampman wasn't a fit as a 3-4 linebacker, Montgomery wasn't a 3-4 defensive end. They tried to bulk him up to play defensive tackle in 2008, but he ended up playing a lot at defensive end after DE Cullen Jenkins got hurt and DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila was released. The coaches liked that he could play either end position in the 4-3, but I never saw the point since he was OK against the run and rarely provided a pass rush.
I don't know how badly the Vikings need depth for their defensive line, but now they've got it. He's a step up from the practice squad, but you'll know the wheels will have fallen off the Vikings defensive line if he becomes a starter.

picks
if we get a 3rd for kampy next year, we’ll probably get a 4th for montgomery…lol.
Compensation
The odds they’ll receive something continue to grow so long as they don’t sign anyone from another team.
Haha sweet. Montgomery really never did anything in his time here. It would be great to get a 5th or 6th round pick for him.

haha
I think a 3rd will be what we get for kamp…though it comes down to how he rebounds from the injury. While i hope Kampman blows up and looks great, I don’t hope Montgomery does TOO well. I’d rather get a low pick for him since he’s on one of our bitter rivals.
Not sure
There’s something about him being over 30 that pushes the compensation down. Plus it’s hard to speculate since the NFL doesn’t exactly tell us how the compensation picks are determined.
wow
we go from a killer defense to what we saw last year a hit or miss d and now we got folks calling guys like him a bench warmer. I bleed green and gold but ted needs to go.
We had a killer D before last year? When was that, in 1996?
Please elaborate.

1995 and 1997 weren't to shabby
plus can’t forget the defenses in the late 1950’s and the decade of the 60’s
Montgomery was a bench warmer…? He played in 2008 because of Jenkins injury, and did pretty much nothing. In fact, he was a large reason our pass rush and run defense was so weak. They guy was nothing more then really a 3rd string DE for us, plus he doesn’t fit our new system. I don’t get your complaint?
