Packer Restricted Free Agent Update
A few restricted free agent tender amounts became known today, apparently as the word leaks out to each player's agent.
The Press-Gazette reported CB Will Blackmon will receive a 4th round tender, CB Tramon Williams a 1st round tender, and RB DeShawn Wynn won't receive a contract offer. Neither Blackmon and Wynn are surprising due to their injury history. I thought Williams might receive a higher tender (a 1st and 3rd round pick if another team signs him) but it's a good draft for defensive backs, so another team might not be that eager to sign him away.
JS Online reported LG Daryn Colledge and C/G Jason Spitz will both receive a 2nd round tender. Spitz should be fully recovered from his back injury next season, so he's a good player to keep. I can't imagine Colledge turning his career at this point. Also, I don't understand why they needed to pay an extra $1 million combined to both players just to give Spitz a 2nd round tender vs. a low tender. A low tender would have given the Packers a 3rd round pick instead of a 2nd round pick if Spitz signed elsewhere. Would another team balk at surrendering a 2nd round pick, but be willing to essentially trade 3rd round pick for Spitz for the same contract price?

tenders
it was expected on the tender for williams (#1), but it looks like we are stuck with colledge. i expect the packers to tender collins a 1st and a 3rd round tender.
Extra Million
Spitz reached an escalator which raised his 2009 salary to $1.6 million. The tender amount guidelines say that players must be tendered at the greater of the amount specified or 110% of their previous year salary.
So, if Spitz was a 3rd round tender ($1.176 million) they would have to still pay him $1.76 million. The 2nd round tender value ($1.759 million) was essentially his salary anyway, so why not make it a 3. They had to dish out the same money either way.
Where Colledge comes in is that there is a rule that says basically if another player on the same team is tendered at the first player’s round (Colledge was a 2 for original draft position and that is where Spitz will be tendered), that you cannot tender that player at the same round for less money. So even though Colledge was a 2nd Round original draft pick and could have had a tender of $1.176 million for that compensation, since Spitz is there as well making $1.76 million they either need to pay Colledge the same amount or his tender drops 1 round (to a 3).
Hopefully that made sense…
Why the heck is GB sticking with Darryn Colledge?
He’s garbage! He’s what, 27 years old? He hasn’t gotten any better. Every year he’s too inconsistent, and he is by far our worst run blocking offensive lineman. Argh, I’m so pissed about this one. Nobody in their right mind would want to give up a 2nd Round pick for Colledge!

Haha good question. How McCarthy thinks Colledge still has “a chance to blossom” is beyond me. He’s 28, and has pretty consistently declined since 2007.

My thoughts exactly...
What it boils down to is whether or not their coaches think the can have a healthy O-line this season. If Colledge gets to stay at guard, not such a big deal. But if they have to move him around like last season…
My guess is that they’re thinking about Chad and Tausch. Slight possibility they might not return – or if they do, might not see the kind of minutes they’re accustomed to, and if that’s the case, they don’t wanna lose a younger player who’s got some familiarity with the play calling.
I guess I understand the decision making process a bit, but I still don’t like it.

Hey Brandon ~ Did you see Pat Kirwan's Mock Draft on NFL.com???
He’s got the PACK picking Iupati with the #23 pick and passing on… Campbell, Brown, Bryant, Weatherspoon, & Hughes just to mention a few… even after we tendered Colledge with a 2nd round tender… Please tell me you can’t see us picking a guard in the 1st round over two potential LT’s… a #1 WR… a good RB… and at least 2 OLB prospects!?!?! I don’t even know where to start… It boggles the mind that TT would pass on Hughes & Bryant for a guard who had a TERRIBLE SENIOR BOWL!?!?!
GO PACK!!!!!
I actually had Iupati going to GB in my mock, but that was 2 weeks ago before this tender. I only said that because he was the best player on the board from what I had left. With that said though, I don’t believe Dez Bryant will be a true #1 WR. I do believe he will stretch the field, but I don’t see him as a Go to Guy. Mark my words, our future Go to Guy to replace DD will be in next years draft. You heard it here first!

Seems plausible. I think we could get a good WR in the mid rounds of this years draft though if the situation is right. I think Williams out of Syracuse could be a great guy, as well as Benn out of Illinois, and Gilyard out of Cincinatti.

To replace who though?
The only WR we can realistically consider replacing is DD, and that won’t be for at least a couple years before he’s done. While I don’t see Nelson or Jones replacing DD as a Go to Guy, they are solid slot WR’s that each add their own element to our very dynamic offense.
I’m just not a fan of drafting any WR’s in this draft. I just don’t think any of them would make our team better overall. Sure, a guy like Dez Bryant would be better than Nelson and Jones, but then we are using a high pick on somebody we don’t truly need. Kind of reminds me of our 2008 draft in getting Jordy Nelson. Like…why? We had Koren Robinson at the time in an already dynamic passing attack.
We had a chance at getting CB Brandon Flowers. Anyone have any knowledge in how he has done in Kansas City? I’m honestly not sure.

Well we only really have 4 good WRs on the roster now. We could have Williams, Benn, or Gilyard be a #5 guy this year, and they could actually contribute to a degree because we do use 5 WR sets every so often.
I thought the Nelson pick made sense. Before him, we only had Jennings, Driver, and Jones with Driver being on the older side. I thought actually picking Nelson was kind of questionable just because I had NO idea who he was haha but he’s turned out to be pretty good, and seems like he could be a 800-1,000 yard guy for us if the opportunities are there for him.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t draft a WR early next season but I think we’ll have much bigger needs in other areas.

Brett Swain is our #5 WR for Special Teams purposes
therefore, 1 of those WR’s would have to contribute more on Special Teams. Well, Nelson is already 1, so there would have to be another. Did Gilyard contribute at all? I see where you’re coming from though. I just remember this because I questioned why Ruvell Martin was released last year.

Go To Guy
Driver has already been replaced as the go to guy!!! Jennings is the #1 WR on this team. Driver is slowing down. His last 5 games last year, even as the #2 WR were far from stellar. In fact they were no better than ordinary!!! In another year, it is very likely that Jennings will be replaced as the #1 target. THat role will be passed on to Finley. So as Driver ends his career in GB, next year is his last under contract, all that Jones or Nelson have to do is step into the #3 target. Behind Finley and Jennings!
Flowers is OK, and has plays well. The problem w/ Flowers is his size… Packers have adhered to a rule of only drafting and acquiring CB that are 5’11 or better! It started w/ Moss’s arrival in Minn, and has remained. Sherman broke that rule by drafting Carroll, anyone wanna remind me how that has turned out. Pretty sure that KC plays mostly zone coverage, which doesn’t require size like Press Coverage does!
Woah man? What?
Look at the receptions. A Go to Guy is a WR you go to when you need a first down. A Go to Guy has the best hands on the team. On the other side, you have your weapon. The WR that can stretch the field and make big plays. That man is Greg Jennings. Jennings is definately not a Go go Guy, he is our big playmaker.

Go to
So to you a Go To guy is nothing more than a possession reciever?! Not to me… To me the Go TO guy is the guy you look to whenever you need a play, whether its a big play or just to get 5 yds for a 1st down!! A Go To guy is your #1 WR in ALL situations… IMO, you have a go to guy, who is also your #1 WR and who commands attention from the def. Coordinator in game planning!!! Driver was passed by Jennings as the Packers #1 WR and the guy that Rodgers goes to when he needs a play!! And who do coordinators have to game plan for?? Its certainly not Driver anymore. And lets not forget FInley!!! He could EASILY pass Jennings as the Go To guy in the next year!!!
I’m with you here Stroh. I think Jennings was definitely our go to guy this past year. Driver was great early on but he really declined as the year went on, and had a lot of big drops in big time situations. Though I don’t think either of them will be the go to guy next year. Finley is way to talented not to be the go to guy this next year.

Agree and disagree...
I get your post…but I don’t think your go to guy has to be your #1 receiver. I think its the guy that you rely on the most when you need a big play. For a while, Wayne had taken over as the #1 receiver but when Manning needed 7 yards, he looked to Harrison first. Its about comfort and trust…I think Driver has been that guy for a few years even though he may not have been the #1 guy persay. I think Witten was the go to guy for Romo while TO was the clear #1 receiver. I think Welker was Brady’s go to guy even though Moss was his #1 receiver. That is how I see it. Ideally I would LOVE to see the #1 and go to be the same guy but its not bad having two guys you can count too.
agree
When it’s 3rd and 5 and you need a quick play to get the 1st, is Rodgers looking at Jennings or Driver first? From what I saw, Driver. Just as Sidney Rice is the Go to Guy in MN. He’s not a big play maker, but you trust him to come down with the ball and move the chains. That’s the same with DD. Jennings makes big plays, but also drops plenty of catches. Maybe that’s why he had a down year, Rodgers just couldn’t rely on him consistently, I’m not sure. An argument can be made about Finley though, I did forget about him. Yeah, he might be Rodgers first target and before DD.

Finley was definitely Rodgers go to guy after he came back from his injury, and I’m sure he will be next season. The guy very well could end up being the best receiving TE in the league this next season. This huge for us because that opens up SO much for our WRs.

Yeah, it's definately Finley
Once you brought him up, I recall everything correctly. Perhaps Strohman and I have different views on what a Go to Guy is, because my terminology is you have your big playmaker, and you have your Go to Guy. Jennings was the Go to Guy in the first couple weeks, but when Rodgers was struggling, he went back to Driver, and later to Finley as you mentioned.

Disagree
I have to disagree… I think Rodgers trusts Jennings more than Driver, and though I don’t have stats to back it up I seem to remember Driver dropping just as many, in fewer opportunities than Jennings. Not to mention that Driver also had a couple of HUGE fumbles, that certainly contributed to a couple of losses, see AZ playoff game, where Jennings was a HUGE contributor and Driver was invisible, except for his fumble!
Gotcha on Flowers
I wasn’t sure how he panned out. I don’t get to watch too many KC games. I just recall the name because I really wanted GB to draft him that year.
