Packers Release Two: DE Michael Montgomery and S Matt Giordano
Nothing personal towards either of them, but it's about time the Green Bay Packers released DE Michael Montgomery and S Matt Giordano.
Montgomery was a good backup defensive end in the 4-3, but he was out of place in a 3-4 defense. He wasn't a good fit when he was resigned back in March, and he rarely played last season. It didn't make any sense to pay him $1.325 million for 2010.
Giordano was signed with a reputation as a special teams ace, but he was rarely left active to play on defense or special teams, and he did nothing when he was actually on the field.

Do You Think...
That these are in response to a free agent signing? Maybe we’re clearing room at safety or something for a new guy? Or is that just wishful thinking on my part?
They Needed to Go...
and I hope TT has his eye on a couple of those 2nd or even 3rd tier FA’s… Just to shore up some good depth… Either on Special Teams, Offense or Defense!!!! : ) Our drop off in the secondary (Granted we were seriously short of talent after 2 – 4 injuries…) O-Line depth was almost crippling… Special Teams were pretty bad too… So I’m sure TT is looking very hard to find a couple solid pieces to bring in whether before the draft or after! There are only 31 GM’s in this league… (And Al Davis… : ) He’s got the job for a reason… We can hope, pray, RANT, & RAVE… TT will always have us scratching our heads in wonder… Sometimes that’s half the fun… If we knew exactly what he was going to do every time… What fun would that be!?!? LOL…
GO PACK!!!!!
Don't read too much into it
The Packers are simply putting some players into the FA market that they know will not make the team next year. Montgomery is an average 4-3 DE and well below average in the 3-4. Giordano just didn’t have what the Packers needed as a back-up to Bigby, so he was never able to get a chance on special teams.
If my memory is correct, the Packers have often cut players during the FA period to allow them a chance to go to another team, rather than bringing them into training camp for no real reason.
planning ahead
does anybody else think it would be a good idea to give finley a contract extension now?
since it’s an uncapped year and we can probably sign him to a decent contract that won’t break the bank.aka rodgers.
i just think this would be wise before he gets any better and realizes that he can get huge “jack” elsewhere. something like a 4 year 15 million with 8 mill gauranteed. thoughts?
The only problem I see with a deal like that... is Aquan Boldin...
Remember when the Cards signed him to a 6 year deal… and he’s spent the last 3 years bit@hing about it… I’m all for getting our CORE people signed to long term deals… Just wouldn’t want it to come back and be a distraction later on!
HERMIT ~ It’s a great thought… I think if he plays lights out this year… and he thinks he’s already outplayed his rookie contract… We may have to restructure a deal sooner rather than later anyway! :) But, I really like the thinking ahead… : )
GO PACK!!!!!
Maybe this is a way
for some money to be freed up to be used to re-sign Nick Collins to a huge deal. That needs to get done VERY quickly…
