Open Thread: 2010 NFL Draft, Day 2, 2nd and 3rd Rounds
Barring a surprising trade up into the 2nd round, the Green Bay Packers once again have to wait a while until it's their turn in the NFL draft. And once again, we can discuss the other picks until then.

I think it's the Browns
possibly the Bills because nothing they do makes sense

Hey, Daily Norseman blogger here
Great pick with Bulaga. Really helps shore up your line. Thought Detroit had a very good night as well.
Damn it all to hell. ;)

Unfortunately
I think the Lions had a good first night too. It’s almost like they have someone competent running their organization now…

whats your take on the vikings 34th pick?
They want power. We want respect...
by SenorChuckles on Apr 23, 2010 4:57 PM CDT up reply actions
Honestly don't know
I think if Clausen was their guy, they would’ve pulled the trigger at 30 and not given the Lions a gift wrapped Jahvid Best. I think they’re wanting to see if there’s any trade offers out there that they can’t refuse.
Or the guy they want is on the board, and they’ll pick him.
That said, if Clausen is the best player available and the Rams don’t trade the pick, I think the Vikes will take him. They’re pretty consistent on taking the BPA and not reaching.

They don't need secondary help?
I know they just signed Lito Sheppard.

Yes and no
If Winfield and Griffin come back healthy, they’ll be okay. Winfield should be fine; Griffin might not be ready in time for the season opener. Benny Sapp and Lito Sheppard will be okay as temporary fill-ins.
If their injuries are more serious, they will need DB help.

So much for St. Louis trading the pick

Eh
What they were showing on NFL Network it looked like he didn’t have the best footwork for his size to be able to cover consistently at corner. They suggested he might switch to FS eventually.
There were other cornerbacks I was far more impressed with

Yeah, they said he had stiff hips. Seems like a bit of a reach.

They do need some secondary help though. Between adding Sheppard and now Cook, they should have some good depth.

Haha Kiper didn’t like the pick at all. I don’t think it’s a bad one. He was a projected 1st round DT by many.

You’d have to think so. I still think Clausen is gonna be better then Bradford and Tebow.

I forgot they have Cassel. I think they’ll pass on Qb. If they end up doing so, do the Browns take Clausen? Holmgren has made some comments about not liking him in the past but can he really pass him up at 36!?

looks like it will be safety vs tackle
I don’t see any cornerbacks or OLBs that GB likes that much at 56. Any thoughts?
no doubt,
thought he would be taken before Mays. Burnett can cover but he sometimes doesn’t wrap up on tackles; that can be fixed though.

I think Gerhart is gonna be a good Rb but he does all the same things AP and obviously not better. Would have thought they would go with more of a threat as a pass catcher.
Cincy has 2 2nd round intriguing picks in back to back years
from Mike Johnson last year to Carlos Dunlap this year. Kudos for them as they both have tremendous upside

hey guys, i love the pick! most of you know how i feel about Jolly, so enough said. i think we should have got Charles Brown though. Good pick overall

i just feel like we needed a rusher, a CB, or more OL help more.
"The outfield is deep and playing him straight-away, and the infield is the same, except first, second, third, and short are playing him to pull."
-Mike Shannon
i like both scouting reports
think about it guys, he will be a part of a rotation. he’s best for rushing the passer, not stopping the run. problem fixed with our rotation: Jenkins, Pickett, Raji. On passing downs, Jenkins, Raji, and Neal. ta-dah! LOL.
I like the pick.
"No player is greater than a team."
-Vince Lombardi
Jolly is nothing but average. I know he gets knock downs every once in a while but I’d much rather have a quick guy like Neal who could provide a better pass rush.

wow, we actually agreed on something again. LOL
i seriously think you and i or like Kiper and McShay. LOL! at times, ya know….

Haha yeah we can be! We don’t get as heated though, and I don’t have slicked back hair…do you?
by packallday555 on Apr 23, 2010 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions
Jolly can’t shed his blocks or ever get a push.
Harrell is far too oversized now. After college he was a great fit, at this point though he needs to lose weight and get closer to 300 as opposed to 325.
Wynn is far too undersized and is strictly a backup with a very limited role. Very little upside.
"No player is greater than a team."
-Vince Lombardi
Yeah, Jolly has provided no push pass rushing for us. This is definitely a good pick. Could help Jones out quite a bit.
by packallday555 on Apr 23, 2010 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions
that's a good point
maybe Jones struggled to get to the QB because the DE in front of him wasn’t doing the job.
+2
Clay Matthews was a beast largely because Cullen Jenkins is. it all starts up front.
"No player is greater than a team."
-Vince Lombardi
Yeah, we also got ran on over Jolly and Jones, and a lot of that was cause of Jolly. He doesn’t ever generate much push. Just kind of a big body, that can take up space. This move could really, really help Jones. Hopefully Neal works out.
by packallday555 on Apr 23, 2010 7:16 PM CDT up reply actions
did i watch a different team?
I remember jolly having an excellent season, making lots of plays for a 3-4 DE.
Drafting a DL when that is probably the best part of our team is disgusting. This kid better be a player and do something in our rotation this year. OT’s still on the board, MUCH bigger needs at corner/safety/olb…yuk.
He made a few nice INTs and had some bat downs like I said but looking at his play on the OL it wasn’t anything special. He doesn’t ever generate push, which can be ok in the 3-4 but obviously it’s ideal to have a guy who can clog things up and rush the passer.
I think it may have been to early yet to take a Cb. It seems like the run on Cb’s is starting now, so we’ll see if we get one here later in the 3rd.

Burnett was is a talented guy though. He had 7 INTs as a sophomore and 4 last season as a junior. He is good in coverage and has good awareness. All things Bigby lacks. He could really help us out.

-Mike Shannon
He has an excellent see-to-do reaction and can get a good jump on the ball. He has good timing and anticipation, and generally comes down with the ball in a joust. Despite this, he’s not just a centerfielder. He’s equally dangerous inside the box. He’s an accomplished blitzer who can get to the QB. He’ll also shoot the gaps and make plays behind the line of scrimmage. Burnett is a hard hitter and isn’t afraid to get his clothes dirty to stop the running game.
via cdsdradt.com.
Scouts on NFL.com and Cbssports.com said virtually the same things.
I know right? The guy had 14 INTs in 3 seasons at GT, and by the sounds of it he is a capable tackler.
I’ve read a couple places that his weaknesses seem to be inconsistency and that he tries to go for big hits a bit too much and ends up missing a tackle. As long as it says nothing about weakness in coverage I’m happy.
by packallday555 on Apr 23, 2010 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions
Burnett is well-built instinctive safety who does a good job locating the ball in the secondary and then closing on it from a center field position. He exhibits good balance and footwork in his drop and consistently keeps his feet under him when asked to transition and get out of his breaks. Burnett gets up to speed quickly and showcases impressive range when asked to make plays sideline to sideline. He exhibits good click-and-close ability on passes in front of him and can consistently get his hands on the ball. He’s an impressive ball hawk in the secondary. Against the run, Burnett does a nice job reading the action in front of him and then taking good angles toward the ball. He isn’t a physical tackler and has a tendency to lower his head into contact, but he wraps up well and can fill running lanes on the inside.
From NationalFottballPost.com
Who knows. Schofield could be there for us and maybe Eric Norwood will be there in the 5th for us. It’d be great to get one of those guys and then a Joe McKnight later in the draft.

FS vs SS
I saw Burnett listed as a FS, which is Collins spot. I don’t really see a difference anymore as its a passing league and i’d rather have a coverage guy than a hitter but what does everyone else think?
Burnett is definitely a coverage guy. Another thing is the safteys in Caper’s 3-4 system are pretty much interchangeable.
by packallday555 on Apr 23, 2010 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions
Really? I saw SS somewhere too. I don’t think it matters a ton in this system and plus he’ll play where we tell him to play! I don’t think they would have taken him if they didn’t think he would be able to challenge Bigby.
says FS here but whatever
if it doesn’t matter in our system i’m happy with the pick
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1242890
According to that link Burnett is actually taller and almost as heavy as Bigby.
You guy's
got me sucked in…. just like facebook, I have spent 3-4 hrs watching draft online and blogging last 2 days—my GF thinks I have lost my mind LOL
Maybe we could package our 2 5th rounders to move up if there’s a Cb or OLB we really like? Haha and maybe we should hope for this considering the way TT has picked in the 5th round.

If O'Brien Schofield is there in the 5th, we take him
5th Round CB’s and later rarely pan out along with just about any other position that late. However, Schofield would be a steal as he has the red flag with the ACL tear. Worth the risk in my opinion with his upside.

Can no longer say that he doesn’t move up in drafts. He has now done it what, 3 times in the top 3 rounds of the last two drafts now. I think those are pretty good numbers. He’s showing he can change his style to fit the phase the team is in.
Yeah, and he finally took an OT early, which has been a major criticism.
