So...umm...The Secondary
Ugh.
I know that Al Harris is rehabbing, and I hear he's making good progress, but will he ever be back to where he was before the injury? And will he be back in time for the start of the season?
Those are two questions that are still nagging me after the 2010 NFL Draft.
Against better quarterbacks after Harris' injury - Warner and Roethlisberger - the Packers' secondary got shredded. If you discount the meaningless end-of-the-season game, in the 2 remaining games against those two quarterbacks, the secondary yielded 58 completions for 882 yards and 8 touchdowns against 0 interceptions.
So, assuming that Harris isn't back to starting form (or is completely out of the equation) the Packers are where they ended last season.
Starting Cornerbacks: Woodson, Williams
Nickel Back: Blackmon
Dime Back: Lee or Bush
Others: Lee/Bush, Underwood, maybe Bell or Trevor Ford?
I'm fine with the way we're setting up at safety. Burnett or Bigby will be our starting strong safety alongside Collins. The other will provide depth. And Derrick Martin will provide a fall back.
But I think we're an injury away from being in big trouble at cornerback. Do we go out and sign a veteran free agent? Dre' Bly, Nick Harper, Anthony Henry, Ty Law, Ken Lucas, Hank Poteat, Deshea Townshend, and Frank Walker are still available.
Or do you all think we're fine? Thoughts?

Underwood>day 3 CBs
and yes more NFL vets will be signing now, but I doubt GB signs any.

Lee will probably be dime if Harris is back
Otherwise my bet is that he will be inline for the nickelback position. He’s supposedly all healed now, and was ready to go back in November. They also seem to think that Underwood will come along. From what I’ve read his major problem was an allergy to working and preparing. I guess it took till December to beat that out of him. Hopefully he shows up and decides that he needs to be a professional in the NFL, if so we could be in good shape.
I prefer to call it the Frank Walker experience

Besides
The picture above with Bell…… There were many factors that went into that play. Yeah, Bell could have had the experience and push the WR towards the middle rather than give up the sideline. BUT even if he had done that, BIGBY was like 15 yards out of the play anyway. I love Capers, but rushing 3 and leaving Bell on an island didn’t help either. I am not going to put all the blame on that kid.
I do want the Bush “experience” to be over though. I was a little taken back by not getting a CB. I think the AZ game and the Steeler’s game are fresh in the coaches minds still so something tell’s me GB might have something up their sleave.
+1
I mean, look at that picture again. That’s a hell of a nice catch, and Bell was right there despite making a lack-of-experience-type mistake. I think he’s a player.
Jarrett Bush… not so much. If you need somebody to look good running up to a pile after the play’s over, then Jarrett’s your man.

Bush never the answer
I think keeping Bush last year was MM’s way of addressing special teams. Bush is supposedly a special team monster, and so he was there to help tackle on kick offs and such. Unfortunately everyone in the secondary decided they really didn’t need knees anymore so he wound up in the lineup.
Right now I’m buying a bit of TT’s the CB’s aren’t really THAT bad. If Lee stays healthy and Underwood grows up a bit we should be in pretty good shape till Al comes back and promptly begins to mug every receiver in front of him.

Yeah, you guys are right. Bigby was completely out of position, and definitely didn’t leave himself in a position to be able to get back over to help Bell out.

Safeties are more valuable than Corners in a 3-4 Defense
and that is a fact. Also, I’d rather have Underwood (who I’m not a big fan of) start over another Day 3 rookie. Experience in the same system pays!
We have Nick Collins I and Nick Collins II. How can you complain about that safety tandem?

i'm not much of a fan
but of the FAs you mentioned, I probably like Bly the most.
With that said, I bet a healthy Lee, Blackmon and Underwood outperform him.
Jarrett Bush is the only Packer corner that I think is downright awful.
I don't like Bly
he’s really slow, he got burned alot in San Fran last year.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

The thing about Bush
Saying Jarrett Bush was a corner for us last year is kinda like saying Brett Swain was our third string QB. Well sure he could of been placed into the roll if there suddenly was a huge injury bug at that position, but it’s not like that was the plan going into the season.
At no point did I ever think MM thought in his head, well we’ve got to keep that Bush kid because we need him at CB. It was more, I really said to the press that special teams are important and this kid has produced there. I mean there’s no way we could have that many injuries to corner that we would really rely on him for more than one or two plays a game…right?

Very good point. I agree with ya. BUT I do think he has worn out the special teams " value" though. Even in an uncapped year 3 million is just too much for his performance. I would be a horrible coach or GM so my opinion does not matter much…….. JSOnline dedicated a whole article about him (Bush) last year.

The team leaders in special teams tackles last yr were #1 Bishop with 22 next …… #2 you guessed it, our local alcoholic Spencer Havner with 21 1/2 and then #3 Derrick Martin, with 21. According to
http://www.packers.com/news/stories/2010/03/30/1/
As a person he is a good young man ( Bush), but he makes average players look like Jerry Rice. Given the fact of how effective the spread offense can be against the 3-4 even our 3rd and 4th DB’s become important. Hopefully, this year a OLB or S or CB someone, ANYONE can hit home on the QB’s just a little quicker.
Bush is garbage on special teams as well. I think the guy lined up offsides when we were about to have the ball punted to us 2-3 times this year. I mean, how does that happen? Bush is just a bad player.

I don’t think it’d be Blackmon at nickel. It’d be either Underwood or Lee, which would be ok and an improvement over Bush. Then whoever isn’t nickel plays the dime for us. I really think we’re ok with what we have at Cb. I think the bigger deal is that we now have a S who is supposed to be really good in coverage. Having 2 good S’s in the 3-4 can do a lot to cover up a secondaries struggles. Just look at the Ravens or Steelers. With Ed Reed and Landry back there teams really struggled to pass on them. Despite their starting Cb’s being guys like Fabian Washington and Dominique Foxworth. The Steelers secondary was more then ok with Polamalu and Carter, and then screwed when Polamalu went out.
I don’t think Collins is Reed or Polamalu by any means but he is arguably the best S in the league behind those two, and having a guy in Burnett who is supposed to be able to cover well could really, really help our secondary.
Exactly and was the point I was trying to make earlier
Looking at the Ravens and Steelers over the past 5-7 years, what premier safeties can you name? I’m not talking decent or good, I’m talking premier as in All Pro. All I can think of is Chris McCallister of Baltimore. Largely because the CB’s role is to cover the sideline and be able to make open field tackles. That’s their role. 70% of the time they are playing in zone. The Safeties have perhaps the most difficult task in covering the majority of the field.
Now, when we did get burned, it was usually when the opponent spread the field. Our hit of injuries at the CB position hurt severely. When the opponent spreads the field against the 3-4, that actually makes our D more vulnerable as opposed to the 4-3. So, while out of the base, we may have perhaps the best D in the division. When we are spread out, we really need to rely on our CB’s. Looking at our schedule, here are some teams that spread the field often and may give us trouble: MN, PHI, DAL, NE. That’s 4 teams. The rest of the teams on our schedule run primarily out of the base formation more than half the time. That’s another reason for picking a Safety over a Cornerback.
Looking ahead to next years draft, it is clear that we need a CB and OLB (pass rusher). Our Dime Formation is used when we face the Spread Offense. It features 2 big guys from the defensive line that can collapse the pocket (Cullen Jenkins and BJ Raji) along with 2 pass rushers on the outside (Clay Matthews and Brad Jones). Last season, Jones wasn’t able to do this role effectively. It hurt missing out on a good pass rusher in the draft, but the board simply didn’t go our way. If he does prove me wrong and becomes a beast as a pass rusher, we are sitting pretty good this year. As for the CB position goes, we should be healthy again. We got our Safety, now we have to hope our CB’s stay healthy this year. For those that watch College Football, keep an eye on Prince Amukamara of Nebraska. He’s 6’1 200 lbs. He’s the size TT likes for CB’s and he’s clearly on the rise. He’ll be entering the draft early next year and he’s one I’d like to get.
I hate to say it, but a lot rests on Brad Jones’ shoulders this year. When our D is spread out, Jones drastically needs to up his game by being a force as a pass rusher. I hope he does this, I really do.

I was pretty unhappy we didn’t dradt a corner or outside linebacker in the draft, and instead draft four linemen, but obviously TT is more worried about our aging tackles than our corners, and though I don’t agree with it in situations like this I can only say onething
“In Ted Tompson I trust”
I think a few times now, Jabooty commented on the increased importance of the safety in our 3-4 defense so while he didn’t address corner, he did address our Dbacks. He also didn’t address our OLB but he did address our DE which was an effort to fix the same problem. Maybe the issue is we all thought it was corner and OLB that were the issue when in actuality it was DE and Safety…I guess we’ll find out next year. Hopefully our corners stay healthy this next year though and we’ll see what we really have.
Maybe the issue is we all thought it was corner and OLB that were the issue when in actuality it was DE and Safety…
This is something to seriously consider. Watching the Cardinals game was pretty telling in what our problems were. Firstly, a lot of people complained that Jones couldn’t get any pressure from his LOLB spot but that really wasn’t the case. Many times he and Matthews were able to force pressure from the outside. The problem was, all Warner had to do was simply step up in the pocket because Pickett and Jolly generated almost no push.
As far as the secondary goes, just ask yourself, where did we always seem to get torched? Too me, it almost always seemed like the middle of the field. We played a lot of zone coverage this past season under Capers, and the guys primarily responsible for the middle of the field were Bigby, Barnett, and Hawk. All 3 struggled at times in coverage but Bigby seemed to the most consistently.

thanks for coming in with some beef behind my thinking. Seems like TT still wants to upgrade at OLB but the players just weren’t there. They were in the first round but you can’t turn down Bulaga. In the second all the 2nd round type OLBs were gone and there was a talented 3-4 DE just sitting there. I do think those two will really help to make the job of the OLB easier. We’ll see though.
No problem! Yeah, I’d agree that TT wants to find another OLB but I also think he is more then content with Jones this year. (And he should be) I really don’t think the secondary is going to be an issue as long as guys can stay healthy this year.
