Packers sign 11 undrafted free agents
Four of them are LB's. Lets hope one of them turns out to be the next James Harrison. Not huge news but you never know.
Sam Shields CB 5-11 184 Miami Shields, 23, played in 48 career games for the Hurricanes in his four seasons. He spent the first three seasons at wide receiver before moving to cornerback in, where he started 10 of 12 games. In 36 career games, he finished with 79 catches for 1,008 yards (12.8 avg.) and six scores. He added three return touchdowns in his career - two on punt returns and one on a kickoff return.Quinn Porter RB 6-0 205 Stillman College Porter, 24, earned Division II honorable mention All-America honors as a senior in 2009. He led the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in both rushing yards (1,247) and all-purpose yards (1,726), and finished second in scoring with 11 touchdowns.
Frank Zombo LB 6-3 254 Central Michigan Zombo, 23, was a four-year letterwinner for the Chippewas and earned first-team All-Mid American Conference honors in his final two seasons. He appeared in 55 career games and finished his collegiate career ranked second in school history with 25.5 sacks.
Alex Joseph LB 6-2 238 Temple Joseph, 23, was a four-year letterman and team captain as a senior. An All-MAC third-team selection in 2009, he finished his career with 252 tackles (135 solo), 17.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and three interceptions.
Tim Knicky LB 6-4 251 Stephen F. Austin Knicky, 22, played in 45 career games, including 40 starts, during his collegiate career. Which jones james or brad. Because i can see one of those Wide Recivers taking james spot. But i dont think they will take brad’s he proved he can play last year he will most likely be a starter this year if i had to pick any of them i would say knicky or zombo will make the team. I say no to joseph because what everyone wants is a pass rusher and he has 1 sack so thats ont good.

James' spot
Do you mean James Jones? If that’s the case then the answer is none. If it’s someone else then it’s completely possible.

Not sure
Jones was alright last season but he has shown some flashes of being a good WR.

Yeah James Jones is not going anywhere!
I hope to see him step up this year like I hoped he would last year. I hope I’m not hoping the same thing next year.
Great post
A lot more detail on these guys then I gave to them earlier. I hadn’t been very impressed with these signings. Sam Shields is getting the most press, but he is the guy I expect to have the best chance at making the team. I’d like to see a real home run threat on kick returns. If he can actually provide some depth at corner, then it’s just a bonus.
FA
Gotta agree w/ you Brandon… Of the FA, Shields strikes me as the guy most likely to win a berth on the roster. He’s great on ST and if he can do returns, he would beat out Blackmon. Has Shields done alot of returns??? DOn’t know for sure… Either way, the fact he started as a SR at CB, right after changing positions tells me he must have some good CB skills and instincts! Anyone else is, IMO, practice squad material at best!!!
gunner
I know he was gunner… MY question is did he do returns as well. He could do both.
Anyone know if he did returns at all???
From everything I've heard no.
The only exception was in the Champs Bowl versus Wisconsin, and even that was not designed for him to catch and return, instead he was lined up as a gunner and ran back to take the ball on a reverse.

thanx
I found that out a little after I posted… From what I was reading in the same article, it said he did it alot and very well in HS, and is being given a long look at returns too. He seems to be good catching the ball on punts and kickoffs right now. He’ll have to prove himself to be very secure catching it and provide good retunrs to win the job, but it appears that he has a chance to do both returns and gunner.
Zombo and Knicky
Are the guys to keep an eye on, in my estimation. They’re the most likely to make a push for a roster spot and challenge Jones. Bedard was most impressed by Zombo yesterday at rookie camp, at least if his twitter updates are any indication.
Shields speed and dynamic-ability is intriguing, although like you said, Brandon, there’s probably a reason beyond his marijuana use that caused him to go undrafted. Nonetheless, if he can prove his value as a returner, he could very well make a run at Blackmon’s spot.
All in all, it doesn’t look like an exhilarating crop of UDFA’s, but what the heck do we know at this point?
"stay (green and) gold"
I guess Campbell has some potential
I was reading an evaluation of these guys over at JS Online
Some of the scouts they talked to stated the Campbell and McDonald are two guys who are just really raw and need time to develop. Good practice squad guys. I guess that’s what I’m looking at most of these guys as, practice squad candidates who could turn into something special in a year or two.
I mean what more can we ask for from these guys?
We could ask them to do the macarena during training camp for comedy relief. Boost morale in my estimation.

Don’t get me wrong with what i said i do like james jones. Its just if driver retires i dont really know if james would be a good Number 2 reciever he is a good 3-4 whatever he is right now but i dont know if he could be a number 2 like we need.

I think that's Nelson's spot
I don’t know if he’s going to be able to do the same playmaking that DD does, but he’s a good possession guy with straight line speed. Should be able to find the hole for a season if the worst happens to DD (or if DD retires someday) and give us sometime to draft a good compliment receiver.

Well thats what i mean say james jones does step up and take over as the number 2. Jordy isnt a number 3 i hardly think he is a number 4 he makes some big plays but i dont think he is a number 3 reciever. Finlay could be changed to WR he is quick enough and big. I think thats why we drafted quarless maybe there gonna move finlay to reciever.

+1
We can get Julio Jones perhaps or somebody like him next year in the draft and we’ll have no worries. We need a big target and someone to rely on. A Go to Guy in other words. Not the guy for big plays like Greg Jennings, but somebody you look at to come down with the ball in crucial situations.

Give Nelson some time..He was a really good #4 for us last year, and did a good job of being the #3 when he had his chances. He and Jones just don’t get all that many looks because we have Jennings, Driver, and Finley.
Finley is going to stay at TE. He and Quarless could be a nightmare together in double TE sets.

I hope they still use the spread more often though
I’d rather have Quarless sit and develop in his rookie season much like how Finley did.

James Jones has shown some flashes of greatness again this year, but not at all consistent
I was hoping for more from him but he didnt have that many opportunities either.
Nelson doesnt have that flash of greatness but he has been very solid and is a excellent slot reciever.

No. 2 reciever
Look w/ the way things have turned out, Finley and Jennings are recievers 1 and 1a…. Doesn’t mean Finley is going to be a WR, just one of the top recievers!!! Jones and Nelson will fight it out after DD is gone to see who is the #3 and #4 recieving option… Heck, Quarless MIGHT even make them 4 and 5 in a year or 2…
well the only reason i say finlay as a WR is we have way to many Tight end’s If not who is the odd man out havner or lee. I think it will be lee but he is our only tight end who is a pretty good blocker allthough last season we did hold 3 full-backs so we could always keep 4 tight ends but yes quarless and finlay will be a nightmare for other teams. The reason i said finlay as a wr is we did line him up every once in a while in the slot.
by Adam Tarasievich on May 2, 2010 5:18 PM CDT reply actions
Odd man out
IMO, Havner is the odd man out!!! Lee has alot more experience, is a much better blocker and has played ST too… And Lee hasn’t gotten into offseason trouble either! LOL
ya i honestly can’t ever see nelson being higher then the 4 wide out. Everyone is waiting or james jones to bust out and prove he can be our number 2 but that hasnt happened. Which is why i said if any of these recivers can maybe push them jones and nelson to be better or take there spot outright. I would also like maybe one of them to make the team so we can start running our 5 wide out again. Because they few times we did it this year with swan as the 5th it wasnt that good. Though we could line finlay up as the 5th but still we need a good young reciever.
by Adam Tarasievich on May 2, 2010 8:58 PM CDT reply actions
We had tons of success in the Big 5 set this year. Lee or Finely lined up in the slot as the 5th WR more then Swain too.
How were Jones or Nelson supposed to “bust out”? They both played pretty limited roles with us, and while we did use a lot of 3-5 WR sets this past season, neither Jones or Nelson were the primary targets let alone maybe even the 3rd target most of the time. Both did a good job playing the slot, and for the most part were consistent doing so (especially Nelson.). I’m sure picked both with the thought in mind that they’d be able to develop behind Driver and Jennings. When Driver is gone, or his play starts to drop, we’ll then be able to see whether or not they can both step up their play.

Jennings isnt going anywhere so by playing beter than DD in practice and when they have the oppertunity in games. The better player will play. Its not easy to take someones job but it can be done and has. DD had a great season last year expecially the first half dont get me wrong but thats what its going to take.
