"A jury trial for Green Bay Packers defensive end Johnny Jolly, scheduled to begin today in Houston, has been postponed to Tuesday, according to the Harris County District Court hearing the case."

For the Packers' sake, let's see this issue resolved one way or the other ASAP.

Just until next week

My first thought was “not again” but this doesn’t appear to be a big delay. Only until next week Tuesday.

They'd probably stop dragging their feet...

… if Goodell just announced that he’s gonna suspend Jolly regardless of outcome. It’s pretty clear the Packers think they’re going to be without him for a few games, and that they have 0 intention of trying to bring him back after 2010.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Yup…I think its time to move on from him and start a succession plan!

suspension

If Jolly were so sure to be suspended, I don’t think the Packers would have given him a 1st rd tender!!! That makes little to no sense… And I have to believe the Packers know everything there is to know about the case, which is a helluva lot more than any of us know!!! My guess is they think Jolly is getting acquitted and doesn’t get suspended. Either that or they plan to trade Jolly either this summer or next season!

But acquittal doesn't guarantee no suspension.

And the 1st Round tender was before jolly got caught at clubs holding drinks while out on absolute sobriety. AND the judge has now ordered Jolly to submit urine and follicle samples to see if he’s violated his bond. I think the odds of suspension regardless of the outcome of the other case have gone up somewhat over the last few weeks.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

If he’s acquitted then all the other issues fall by the wayside, IMO. The flyer becomes immaterial to the NFL. A positive test MIGHT carry some significance, but on its own doesn’t warrent an NFL suspension if he isn’t already in the substance abuse program. He has no other off field issues as far as the NFL is concerned, at least not that I know of… I still think he has to be found guilty to get an NFL suspension. Remember it wasn’t a DUI, just a possession, due to it being in HIS vehicle.

But it was felony possession of a narcotic drug...

… not a bag of weed. My guess is that if the follicle test comes back positive the prosecutor will shove the resulting bail jumping charge right down Jolly’s throat and not care so much what happens with the purple drank charges, which I’ll agree seem pretty difficult to prove. If he takes a bail jumping conviction, he’ll get suspended in my opinion. Not on the substance abuse track, but on the conduct detrimental to the league track. A positive test ordered by the Court due to bond conditions is a lot different that a positive test that results from the league’s substance abuse program.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Whats the big deal about a first round tender…its cheap money for a starting DE.

by TrevorR on May 27, 2010 4:25 PM CDT up reply actions

true

But, if you know he is guilty, than you could tender him alot lower and nobody would bother w/ him… Tendering him at 1st rd money indicates to me that they think he will beat the rap.

Just my opinion..

by Strohman on May 27, 2010 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah, maybe

Maybe they just didn’t want to lose him though even if he wasn’t going to beat the rap. We didn’t have depth at that position at all so losing him would have been catastrophic THIS year.
