As if we didn't have enough reason to love the man already, Aaron lays into possibly the worst MNF commentator ever. Also the rest of the interview is pretty awesome.

As a non Packers fan who thinks Rodgers is close to becoming a top 5 QB

That interview made me like him even more.

Lifelong Arizona Cardinals/Chicago Bears fan [I have always lived in Arizona, dad is from Chicago].

I can't stand fair-weather/bandwagon fans, stick with your team, throughout the good and the bad. And don't switch to whichever team wins the Super Bowl each year.

I think

he’s already a top five qb.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Right now

Peyton Manning
Brady
Brees
Favre

Then there are a few guys you can switch in and out of the fifth spot like Rivers, Roethlisberger [I did have him lower until the last season though] and Rodgers. But Rodgers will be good for a long time, especially if the Offensive Line improves.

Favre at #4 for you huh? I guess I can see the argument, but I’d take Rodgers right now over him…oh and I guess we did! ha Ithink the argument for Favre over Rodgers is probably clutch play down the stretch right?

I’d definitely take Rodgers over Ben though…even not taking his off field activities into account.

by TrevorR on Jun 9, 2010 9:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah it has to be.

I think people are going a little over the top with Favre after he had that great season with the Vikings. No doubt he was great and stuff but he probably had the most favorable situation compared to all the other top Qb’s. None of those guys listed above had the type of running back that Favre did.

Too me, the numbers Manning puts up every year and the way he leads his team is second to none. They pretty consistently have ZERO running game, and he still absolutely torches people. The same could be said for Brady, Rivers, or Rodgers too. Though none of them lack a running game to the degree that Manning does. On the flip side, Favre faced 8 man boxes pretty much the whole year. And I don’t want it to seem like I’m saying Favre had it really easy or something either. It obviously still takes skill to torch an 8 man box but it definitely makes things a bit easier.

I would say that those guys in the AFC have

probably faced a bit stiffer competition over the last decade too.

All is vanity.

by levnclf on Jun 9, 2010 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Definitely. The AFC has been the tougher conference for a while now.

by packallday555 on Jun 10, 2010 12:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Though the tide may have turned now.
Seems to be a decade thing. 90s were easily the NFC, 00s were the AFC and now its trending back to the NFC

by TrevorR on Jun 10, 2010 3:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Farve also had a tremendous year due to first having AP at RB and more importanly he had one of the best O-lines in the NFL. If only Rodgers had that kind of line we may have seen even better stats than Rodgers had this year and a lot less number of sacks.

by ajgraham on Jun 10, 2010 4:10 PM CDT up reply actions

don't forget

that manning calls his own plays, so you can say he chooses to throw rather than run the ball. with his 9-9 playoff record maybe peyton should call more running plays and slow the game down, stop running the no-huddle offense so that he lets his undersized defense rest a little more, so their more fresh at the end of games and at the end of the season.

Favre history

Favre’s history over the past decade doesn’t exaclty speak to his “clutch” play… Last year he did to some degree, but he still choked when the SB was on the line… Just like he did for the Packers on multiple occasions!!!

My top 5:
Brady and Manning 1 and 1a in no particular order
Brees
Rivers, Rodgers and Roethlesberger in any combination. A point for Ben in that he won 2 SB. but he didn’t have to carry his team the way that Rivers and Rodgers do… So make it a top 6 and put Favre at 7.

Rivers and Rodgers are on equal footing, IMO, until one of them gets to and/or wins a SB.

by Strohman on Jun 10, 2010 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions

not bad

I think I am pretty close to you on that list. I prefer Manning at 1 because I think he does more for his team. I like Ben at #6 just because I think his success was more about the team than it was about him, He had a great running game and an amazing D, all he had to do was not screw it up!

by TrevorR on Jun 10, 2010 8:18 AM CDT up reply actions

Brady
Manning
Rothlisberger
Rivers
Brees
Rodgers

It’s all about winning. Ask yourself, all things being equal, which QB would you pick if your team needed a score with 2:00 left? Halfway through the 2nd quarter, Brees might terrify me most out of all of them, but… with the game on the line…? Nope. Brees will do his job. Nothing more. Ben, on the other hand, will do whatever it takes to win. Hit by 3 guys? Doesn’t matter. All his WRs covered? Doesn’t matter. He’ll find a way to get it done.

Rodgers is on his way, though, and he could move up the list. The kid’s a gamer.

by Curly Lambeau on Jun 10, 2010 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I get that perspective but Rothlisberger is much too inconsistent to me. He’s definitely clutch, and that’s huge but too many times his play is nothing more then average. For the most part all those guys you listed play consistently well, and are all capable of leading a good 2:00 drive.

by packallday555 on Jun 10, 2010 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I agree. But every QB is inconsistent to a degree. And, when Ben’s “hitting”… I mean, there’s just nothing that can be done to stop him. So, he may be slightly more hit-and-miss than some other guys on the list, but when the “hit” column includes two Superbowls, that counts for alot.

by Curly Lambeau on Jun 11, 2010 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Ben R.

While I generally agree that 2 SB count for alot, he mostly won them w/ a strong run and dominant D. The first SB especially… His 2nd SB, he did alot more to give his team a chance to win! So, Like I said a bit of a point up for Roethlesberger over Rodger and RIvers. However, until last year when Ben actually carried the team he always had a much better team around him than either Rodgers or Rivers, IMO… Putting Big Ben over both of Rodgers and Rivers is fair though…

I live in the DC area

and listen to his radio show alot. He’s good on the radio, especially when he’s not talking about sports. On Monday Night Football, he was painful, straight painful.

One thing Aaron Rodgers hits on the head

just the awesomeness of Mike Tirico as a play by play guy Probably the best play by play guy in football.
