Packers to extend Woodson?

Update: CB Charles Woodson told Jason Wilde at ESPN Milwaukee that he hasn't asked for a new deal.

Ran into this 'rumor' on Yahoo Sports this morning stating that the Packers are in negotiation with Charles Woodson to extend his contract. Woodson who is already 33, is the reigning Defensive Player of the Year for the NFL and is closing in on the final years of his 7 year $52 million deal he signed after leaving Oakland. The contract would expire in 2012 and pays him $7.5 million this season.

My guess is that there are some big numbers at the end of the deal so they are going to give him some big signing bonuses and make it so that his numbers are easier to swallow in the coming years. I hope he can keep this level of play up though...he is truely a standup guy and one of the best in the league...even at his 'old' age.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/Packers-extending-Charles-Woodson-?urn=nfl,246795

Not really sure how a place in Denver (Fox 31 Denver) is breaking this though, not sure how credible it is...

I’ve got no problem with the Pack paying Woodson if it is true. You don’t want him getting anywhere near free agency.

C-Wood is Reggie-esque in the way he can impact a game.

Yeah, I said it.

Charles Woodson should not be allowed to touch free agency.

He’s way too solid a corner to lose. Unless the Packers wind up drafting the next Ronde Barber, Woodson will be the starting CB for the next few years. And even if the Packers draft another Ronde Barber, they should still keep Woodson.

This is good news. Let’s hope it is more than just a rumor and hope that he retires as a Packer with a Super Bowl MVP too! Good guy if nothing else, to help the young guys on the team keep their acts clean.

Woodson

IMO, If I were the Packers I would give Woodson some kind of roster bonus for the year he just had. Its guarenteed money, thats all that really matters beyond this season. Give him a roster bonus or make some bonus money for later years into guareneed money now!

Its not too likely that Woodson plays much more than 3 years, is it? For now give him some roster bonus in addition to his current contract, or guarentee some money that he Might make in the next 3 years.

Seems to me Thompson did something like that w/ Al Harris a year or two ago… So the precedent may already be set!

by Strohman on Jun 9, 2010 9:39 PM CDT reply actions

guarentee some money that he Might make in the next 3 years

Um… that wouldn’t be a guarantee then.

And, btw, I read somewhere that Woodson’s got a few years left on his current contract. Are we sure this is his last year before free agency as the post suggests?

by Curly Lambeau on Jun 10, 2010 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

3 years

Woodson has 3 years left on his current contract…

What I was trying to say about guarenteing some money that he MIGHT make… THere are undoubtedly some bonus money or money that he MIGHT get in the next few years of his contract, which is NOT guareneed, that the Packers could change to be guarenteed. Workout bonus changed into Roster bonus as an example… He surely has workout bonus’ that he only gets if he’s attending the OTA’s AND working out w/ the team that he might not be eligible to recieve, but the Packers could find a way to get him the money anyway.

Kinda like now… He may not be eligible to be getting the workout bonus’ if he’s not on the field, but they can still pay him… There might be roster bonus money that he is scheduled to recieve in a year or two… Packers could pay him that money now, making it guarenteed that he recieves that money.

Putting future bonus money into this season is essentially guarenteeing it…

by Strohman on Jun 10, 2010 1:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I still think this is going to be a deal where they frontload the contract with signing bonuses and make his contract less of a encumbrance on the team in the coming years…The final years of the deal will probably be heavy too but he likely won’t see that money.

by TrevorR on Jun 10, 2010 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought he was looking for a restructuring

Because these last three years were goign to be pretty lean as no one expected him to play at this level this late in his career. A lot of players when they are getting to the end will make it easier for the coachign staff to keep them with lower pay later on. That way when they move to nickel or dime the coaches aren’t still paying them 5 million a year.

It's a lot easier to love the Vikings when they win...

by Grime on Jun 14, 2010 9:37 AM CDT up reply actions

We can only hope that is the case! That would be ideal…

by TrevorR on Jun 14, 2010 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions

bonus money or money that he MIGHT get in the next few years of his contract, which is NOT guareneed, that the Packers could change to be guarenteed

Ah. Okay, gotcha’.

for the record…the post said “final years of his contact” :-)

by TrevorR on Jun 10, 2010 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions

Okay, so he’s got three years left.

I’d say he’s still a bargain if we re-negotiate his contract so that he gets 10 mil per year for the three years he’s got left.

…or at least add some incentives so that he could make more if he keeps playing at or near his current level.

btw, I just realized training camp doesn’t start till August and it’s now June. Ugh.

Or old Bills?

re-tread

Yeah that re-tread QB you got won you a couple extra regular season games, but your still no closer to the grail… Favre has been letting down his teams in the playoffs for YEARS!!! Its called CHOKING!!! You would have been better off trying to draft a Franchise QB, than going w/ the re-tread!!! LOL

by Strohman on Jun 10, 2010 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

So you would rather face the Vikes with Favre than with TJ?

Didn’t think so… so yeah, we’re definitely closer to the grail. No objective analyst or fan would rule us out with Favre at QB… most would without him. If you watch that NFCCG as a purely objective NFL fan, then I think you agree that Favre was nothing less than heroic. He took a pounding and still did everything within his ability to make plays and help his team win. Otherwise, then I guess you think that Aaron Rodgers choked and let you down last year too. Of course Peyton Manning choked in the SB… Sanchez, Warner, Rivers, Romo, MacNabb… everyone except Brees choked and let their teams/fans down.

It’s easy to hate… not saying that I never do, but for me it’s more rewarding and enlightening to appreciate.

by Jshore on Jun 10, 2010 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Favre had an outstanding year. I don’t think many, even on the Vikings bandwagon, felt he would do what he did last year. Maybe R4F but most others I think were shocked at the level he played at (speaking specifically about his lack of INTs) and how he kept it up all season without really wearing down too much at the end. It went against everything we’d seen in the previous seasons. Its like someone replaced his batteries or something.

by TrevorR on Jun 10, 2010 2:31 PM CDT up reply actions

I wasn't surprised

He’s a once in a generation football player. And a prima donna. Those are the facts.

by ktenreb on Jun 11, 2010 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

objective

An objective fan looks at his history, which he REPEATED, last year and see a QB who has CHOKED every year his team got near a SB… I didn’t say that I would rather face Favre than TJ, but that still doesn’t change the FACT that each time he has gotten close to a SB HE CHOKED!!!

Enjoy your continued regular season success and continued playoff choke jobs!!! LOL

Its Favres history to self-destruct!!! Hell at this point you could easily say he is hard wired for it!!! LOL Its in his genetics it seems… Did all the other QB’s throw INT’s when the game was on the line and he could EASILY run for 10 yds??? No… Favre had the game in his hands, like he has on many past occasions and did the same thing he did each time for the past 12 yrs!

Guess you don’t mind being the bridesmaid!!! LOL

by Strohman on Jun 10, 2010 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

last laugh

We’ll see who has the last laugh… Unless #4 wins you a SB it was a complete waste of time! My guess is you wasted your time!!! LOL Especially if you actually think Favre will lead you to a SB, when all he has done for the past decade was to CHOKE every opportunity away!!!

I was MORE than happy to move on from #4, well before most everyone else was… Not hurting in the least. For my part, I was happy when he retired. At that point I was already past Favre and his drama.

by Strohman on Jun 11, 2010 12:29 AM CDT up reply actions

I get it... you hate Favre

Apparently because you hold him personally responsible for “choking” and failing to hoist that trophy more than once after leading you all the way to the threshold. I can understand why you may no longer care to watch Brett Favre play football, but for me and most Viking fans last year was anything but a waste of time.

I’m curious, what is your opinion of Peyton Manning? He has won only one Superbowl, despite taking his team into the postseason every year. He surely has thrown his share of interceptions in critical situations, not the least of which was that last pick-6 in Miami. Is he a choke-artist too?

by Jshore on Jun 11, 2010 6:18 AM CDT up reply actions

One thing on Favre. Your team brought him in for the purpose of getting you over the hump and finally getting a title to put up in the dome…right? You were a playoff team before he was there, I guess you can connect the dots, right?

Regarding Peyton…he’s been known as a choker since his college days. His rap coming into the NFL is that he can’t win the big games…pretty well known fact actually. AND sans one season its remained true despite dominating all regular season. ’

Do a google search on “Peyton Manning choke” you’ll find 48,000 articles…many of them will tell you his story and reputation. I personally still call him the best of all time because he plays the position like no one ever has before him.

by TrevorR on Jun 11, 2010 7:36 AM CDT up reply actions

Maybe it's a half-full/half-empty kind of thing...

I just generally think of a “choke” as the last guy you want leading your team, and I would personally take Favre or Manning without hesitation. As for your “connect the dots” comment I think that you’re missing the obvious… The Vikes are a better team with Favre than without him, whether we raise a banner or not.

Every team works to continually improve and put their best on the field, and yes, the purpose of all those efforts is to win a championship. But if standing on the precipice of ultimate victory only to be heartbroken is truly such a horrible testament to the value of those athletes involved, then I guess Lions fans just don’t realize how good they have it.

by Jshore on Jun 11, 2010 8:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Hate... No

I don’t hate Favre… I’m simply tired of his drama! It old and he over plays it and makes himself look petty and indecisive!!!

Manning is much like #4… One SB, but far too many choke jobs when it matters MOST. Like when you have a chance to get to the SB! Favre himself has now blown a mininum of 4 more SB opportunties. Most recently w/ the viqueens!

vikes were a playoff team Pre-Favre and they remain a playoff team W/ Favre!!! WHat has REALLY changed?! Won a few more REGULAR season game… Big Deal… Advanced a little farther in the playoffs.. Been there, done that… Get to the NFC Championship Game. Only to CHOKE, yet again!!! LOL

A choke artist is the guy who when the PRESSURE is on to win and advance, crumbles under the pressure and remove his teams chance to advance… Sound Familiar?! #4 and the viqueens have both made a habit of it!!! Your perfect together!!! LMFAO

by Strohman on Jun 11, 2010 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions

Are you even capable of a cordial discourse?

I feel like I’m conversing with a 14 year-old. How about this… He kicked your Peckers Asses 2 times last year ROFLMAO!!! And he’s gonna do it again this year!!! ROFLMAO!!!! And as far I as care that’s ALL THAT MATTERS!!! Have fun with your new choke artist when he keeps HANDING THE BALL TO THE OTHER TEAM with the game on the line!!! LOL!!!

Sheesh

by TrevorR on Jun 11, 2010 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions

matters

See thats the difference between the Packers and the vikes… We play to WIN SB… You play to beat the Packers!!! Just like Lovie and the bears!!! LOL

Who had fewer turnovers last year? I know the INT’s were very similar, how about fumbles? One game Rodgers had that included 1 INT and 1 fumble doesn’t compare to the Favre history!!! LOL

by Strohman on Jun 11, 2010 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

That's great if you like to reflect on Regular Season success

I guess that’s the difference between the Packers and Vikings. What’s funny is if the Lions win a Superbowl before the Vikings, they will immediately have a better history than the Vikings! haha. Actually, did I say ‘if?’ LOL. It’s clearly….‘WHEN!’

The only game that matters is the one at the end, the Superbowl. That’s the game we want to get to. The Reg Season paves the way, but is essentially pointless at the end of the season. It means nothing. All you can say is, “It was a good season.” True, you had a good season. So, congrats.

After five years in the league . . .

. . . Favre had a Super Bowl win. Can any other QBs on the Vikings or the Packers say the same?

by ktenreb on Jun 11, 2010 2:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I think your definition of choke is a little off…here is what google’s dictionary has as one of its definitions:

fail to perform adequately due to tension or agitation; “The team should have won hands down but choked, disappointing the coach and the audience”

No one…well I am not saying your team isn’t better without Favre. In fact, I am not even venturing down the road of if he choked or not because its an argument no one will win. I was merely responding to your comment about Manning. He’s always been known for not being able to break through and win the big games…choking if you will. Favre has had the same reputation actually…its a fact. That said, a QB is never fully to blame but with the glory comes the spoils. They are going to get more than their fair share of glory when they win so they get more than their fair share of the blame when they lose.

by TrevorR on Jun 11, 2010 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think I meant it as a definition but you're right... I was off.

Even if a player does have a tendency to choke in the NFCCG I would still start them on my team if they gave me the best chance to get to that game in the first place. Once there it would at least be possible to dominate thoroughly so that there never was that intense pressure.

by Jshore on Jun 11, 2010 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Clearly Favre gives you your best chance…you are right there. I think the argument that some are making is that while he gives you your best chance, he still really doesn’t give you a chance :-)

Maybe he’ll prove us wrong though…but we were in the same shoes throughout the 00s.

by TrevorR on Jun 12, 2010 10:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Favre 2007 vs 2009
  • Early season heroics stirs up MVP talk? Check.
  • Lost late season prime time road game (@Dallas in ’07)? Check.
  • Embarrassing late season loss to Bears costs a chance at #1 seed? Check.
  • Blow-out victory in divisional round? Check.
  • Late interception and overtime loss in Championship game? Check.
  • NFC Champ goes on to win SB in an upset? Check.

All coincidences, to be sure. Except the “Favre throws a disastrous interception in the playoffs” one, which is just par for the course.

After five years in the league, how many playoff games has Aaron Rodgers won?

by ktenreb on Jun 14, 2010 2:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Well Rodgers, like some of the other guys who have been on the team for 5 years now has won 1 playoff game.

You should say after 2 years playing, how many playoff games has Rodgers won.

You really don’t like Rodgers huh? What do you suggest we do with him? Should we try and trade him? I’m sure the Vikings would give Favre back to us for him. Maybe just cut him?

by packallday555 on Jun 14, 2010 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

Nah, we should trade Rodgers for Matt Hasselbeck.

I think we’d get about the same return for Farve at this point…

BTW, what is Farve doing? Because I’m pretty sure he wasn’t at OTAs…

by OBrienSchofieldismyHero on Jun 14, 2010 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

That's not it at all

I like Aaron Rodgers. I think he is a terrific quarterback. I just do not like the Favre bashers. Favre, prima donna pain-in-the-ass though he is, was a remarkable quarterback. He has 3 MVP awards and a Super Bowl victory, and when he started as the Packers’ QB, there was nothing around him.

As for those who seem to say that Rodgers is “really” only a second-year QB, let me ask you: If he is so good, why didn’t he beat out the incumbent? Favre did.

by ktenreb on Jun 14, 2010 5:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Farve had a terrible incumbent to beat: himself.

That was about as legitimate a QB competition as Matt Hasselbeck and Matt Hasselbeck…

by OBrienSchofieldismyHero on Jun 14, 2010 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I think when he first started

His competition was the Majik Man, who was a sort of cult hero at the time.

by ktenreb on Jun 15, 2010 10:13 AM CDT up reply actions

He was also injured (Majik) and never came back to challenge Favre. Favre was basically handed the job…well he earned it I guess in 1992 but it was one of those rare situations where the starting QB lost their job (like the Bledsoe/Brady situation) due to an injury.

That said, after looking really promising, Majik never looked the same after his torn rotator cuff in 1990. He had a phenominal year in 1989 though…over 4000 yds 25 or so TDs…looked like the next big thing.

by TrevorR on Jun 15, 2010 12:44 PM CDT up reply actions

It's impossible to beat out Favre

When Favre demands full control of the team. That’s not bashing him by the way, I’m just saying it how it is. Besides, Rodgers was not ready to start in 2005 or 2006. In 2007…maybe, but we just don’t know. I don’t think we would have gone 13-3 with Rodgers in 2007. Maybe 10-6, but not 13-3 that year.

I’m sick of the Favre worshippers that act as if everything is Rodgers fault, compare Rodgers to Favre, and expect everyone to feel sorry for Favre. I do not support those that burn Favre jerseys. I will always remember him for his first 13 years here. His last 3 are, eh, well, lets not talk about it. I guess 2007 made up for it. idk.

Point is, people need to move on, regardless of which side you are on. You can’t change the past. What’s done, is done. Hopefully everyone will remember Favre for the good things he brought to us and forget about his last 5 in the league.

yep

and that had nothing to do with the new coaching staff that was brought in and the rex ryan’s 3-4 defensive style.
sanchez had 12 td’s and 20 int’s, so how much did he really do. the jets had the number 1 defense and the number 1 running attack in the league last year, so sanchez just had to complete the handoff and watch his defense embarrass their opponents.

lets not forget that the jets wouldn’t have made the playoffs if indy had any interest in winning that game in week 17 as well.

since sanchez is 2-1 in the playoffs as a qb, does that mean he’s better than rodgers?

6 INT’s vs St L
2 INT’s to Atl in 1st ever home playoff loss at Lambeau
Int to end the Philly playoff game (Green nearly 200 yds and 8 sacks by Pack D)
4 INT’s to Minn in 2nd home playoff loss at Lambeau
2 INT’ in home playoff loss to NYG
Late season melfdown for NYJ costing the Jets a playoff berth!

Here’s the problem… His last good playoff season was over a decade ago!!! Won the SB in ’97 and got there in ’98, that was 12 years ago!!! Lets try to look at current history! Cold weather is the usual excuse Favre lovers use… Its a Poor excuse!!!

Fact is in the playoffs teams go only as far as the QB can take them!!! And in the playoffs, QB’s who throw 2 INT’s LOSE the vast majority of games!!! One INT can be overcome, but 2 INT’s is a killer of post-seasons!!!

All #4 had to do was run for 5 yds, and he had about 10-15 easy to give Longwell a FG to win the game!!! So I would say it still qualifies as a game ending INT… Especially considering it was the end of regulation!!!

Getting back on track to my original point...

Woodson is a special talent and it makes sense that GB would want to lock him into another long-term deal. OK I phrased it a bit differently before, and it seems I failed in my attempt at humor.

Woodson in Cowboys @ Packers last year

I was listening to the radio broadcast of last year’s Cowboys @ Packers game (on NFL fieldpass), and a number of things came to mind:

  • Woodson had just a monster, career game that day
  • I think he pretty much got half way to the DPOY award on that one performance
  • As well as saving the Packers’ season, and McCarthy’s job
  • Romo was constantly harassed in that game—I’ll bet that’s one of the games the Vikings looked at with keen interest when they knew they were going to face the Cowboys in the playoffs…

You beat Romo by bringing a ton of pressure from everywhere. That's what made the difference this time.

The defense played much, much better against an overrated Dallas team this year. Which is a great turnaround from that garbage game vs. Dallas in 08. What a nightmare…

Nitemare

I was at that Dallas nitemare in ’08… With a buddy who is a Cowboys fan!!! That SUCKED!!! Had to hear it for a year… Now I have the upper hand! And I let him know about it every chance I get!

Gotta give props to LeRoy Butler for the tix though!!!

You have my deepest sympathies for going to that 08 game vs. Dallas.

If we didn’t know the defense had issues before then, we certainly knew afterwards. That Dallas game was the season in a nutshell.

Then the Packers turn around and totally DESTROY Indianapolis. Did anyone see that game coming?

Haha God no! I was in shock that whole game. I was laughing my ass off, jumping up and down while Rouse was running one back for a pick 6 off Manning.

I think it’s games like those that really get me excited about the Packers. Every once in a while they flash a glimpse of dominance. Hopefully that glimpse begins too turn into something more consistent.

That was one of the best games I have ever been at in person! To see Rouse’s pick six was just perfect! Plus the UW marching band was there and their tuba line went around the stadium and spelled out on their tuba covers “Archie <3’s Eli More!” So much fun at that game!

Why’d you have to go and get me all jealous :(? Haha.

Did he have a TD catch towards the left corner on the endzone in that game? I think he got hit in the back right? Anyways, I don’t know what happened to Lee..

Woodson has been the hardest player to let go since I've been a fan of the Raider's in 1st grade, 91

A truly stand up guy since I’ve got to see him play every Sunday living in WI 80% of my life. Here’s hoping a rematch of Super Bowl ll in my lifetime!

ugh...

how did my Woodson article get hijacked into a Rodgers v. Favre fight.

Seriously people…LET IT DIE!!

So back on topic, what kind of contract would YOU want to see Woodson get?

by TrevorR on Jun 14, 2010 9:13 PM CDT reply actions

contract

Keep his current contract… And if he has bonus money tied into future years then move it forward to this year as a reward… If not, then add a roster bonus of a couple mil…

I doubt the Packers will actually do anything w/ him though…

by Strohman on Jun 14, 2010 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

This contract takes him to his 37 th birthday… Is he going to play more then 3 more years??? If he does I’m sure he would want to sign and stay in GB to finish his career. You wanna give him a contract till he’s 40?

by Strohman on Jun 15, 2010 4:27 PM CDT reply actions

yeah, it was a reply.

Do you want to let him play another 2 years to see how well he’s still doing or do you wanna committ to another 6 yrs now?!

by Strohman on Jun 15, 2010 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd like to see where he is two years from now.

So, yeah, I like his current deal. Woodson is NOT Mike McKenzie; he’s not going to pout after one season that he didn’t get all the cash he deserved (and he had some TERRIBLE years in Oakland IMO).

Ultimately, Woodson will go down as possibly the best free agent signing since Reggie White. The production the Packers have gotten out of him has more than made up for his salary.

by OBrienSchofieldismyHero on Jun 15, 2010 9:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree

I would say Woodson is this generations Reggie White… Both were tremendously impactful players both on and off the field!!! And your right… He ain’t gonna complain. He’ll play this year and might quietly ask for an increase next year, if he plays close to what he did last… Of course we need 2 other CB we can count on to allow Woodson to make plays like he did last year. That allows Wood to line up in the slot or at Safety, where ever Capers schemes for him. He’s easily the best playmaker on D for the Packers and likely the NFC and NFL too…
