On Don Coryell

With the passing of former San Diego Chargers head coach Don Coryell, it made me remember back when I became a football fan in 1980. At first I was a huge fan of the Green Bay Packers (obviously), but then I spent hours pouring over an NFL stat book and grew to admire the Chargers under head coach Don Coryell. They were the offensive powerhouse of the early 1980s. In 1980, from Pro Football Reference, they were led by Pro Bowl QB Dan Fouts and featured THREE 1st-team All-Pro receivers.

And if you ever get a chance to watch The Epic in Miami re-played on NFL Network, watch it. That game lives up to it's name.

ahh yes

the days of fouts, winslow, jefferson, chandler and their unheralded rb chuck muncie. i would venture to guess that most that blog on this site would be to young to remember those dynamic charger teams———-to bad they had a defense like the packers in the 80’s.

Air Coryell

When I was in the Marines in the mid 80’s, I had Charger Season Tickets and had to privileged of watching that offensive machine roll. They had a porous defense back then, too so it made for some very exciting football. The funnest games were against the Raiders and a 55-45 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1985 that was clinched clinched on an interception return of all flukes. There were also some great games against Miami, one of which, in 1984 was the phins first loss after going 11-0 to start the season.

I was a die hard Packer fan then and remain so today.

That playoff game vs. Miami in '82 was a classic

I remember it better than a lot of Packer games. Great game.

Just curious… IF the Packer were in the NFC and the Dolphins in the AFC, how did they manage to meat in the playoffs… Or was there a SB I am not aware of?

I believe the reference was to a Chargers – Dolphins playoff game.

Meat in the playoffs?

I guess in a literal sense, there is always meat in the playoffs. Doesn’t matter what jerseys the players wear, it’s the same stuff underneath.

And when did Don Coryell coach the Packers?
