It's Official: Packers Sign Morgan Burnett
The official announcement that the Green Bay Packers have signed 3rd round S Morgan Burnett isn't a big news story since it was unofficially reported last week. Not that this was a major concern because I can't recall a rookie 3rd round pick ever staying away from training camp on account of a contract impasse.
That leaves only 1st round pick LT Bryan Bulaga and 2nd round pick DE Mike Neal unsigned. They're in good company: no 1st round pick has signed yet, and only two 2nd round picks so far.

What a difference a day makes
So sadly enough this was my thought throughout the entire weekend. Shortly after the draft everyone was pissing and moaning that we didn’t draft players that could make an impact this year, but we did think it was nice to see some bulk and depth for future years. The poster child of this reaction was Neal. He was drafted instead of some flashier OLB prospects and RB prospects. Instead we got a D-lineman that people didn’t think would get on the field much with Raji healthy and Jolly doing his thing.
Now that Jolly is pretty much gone, the Neal selection is critical and it looks like he is going to get plenty of chances to get on the field this year. What a difference a day makes.
What does this thought have to do with Burnett getting signed? Well, just as the Quarless signing got me excited to see Burnett get his deal done so he can get on the field quickly, the Burnett signing has got me excited about the Neal deal getting done quicker. After all, Neal just became a critical piece of the D after last weekend.
What a difference a day makes.
Good call. Similar to when he traded for Ryan Grant. At the time, we had a bunch of RBs, and then Grant came into his own right when we needed him, midseason. TT shows prophetic flashes now and then.
…and then, of course, he does something like keep three FBs and gets you wondering again, but still…

Something of note
I am REALLY hoping we sign Bulaga sooner than later. If we wait until after Dallas signs Dez Bryant (picked right after Bulaga) to an overloaded contract, it will cost us a pretty penny.
You know at this point I’m more concerned with the Neal signing then the Bulaga signing. Right now Neal is going to be needed much sooner than Bulaga. Neal is going to be needed right out of the gates now that Jolly is gone. The more time that he has to prepare then the better off Packer Nation will be. It is especially critical that the Packers find out that Neal can be a force or just a workout warrior.
Bulaga on the other than can probably miss a day or two of camp and be fine. I really don’t believe that Clifton will make it through the year this year. He is more machine than man at this point in his career. But, any injury that Clifton has will probably come more down the stretch then right away (or hopefully not at all), so Bulaga can sacrifice a day or two.

I don’t see Dez Bryant’s contract really affecting Bulaga negotiations. WR and OT are differnt and people knew going in that Bryant wanted big money. Bulaga will get less then expected becuase he fell, but not much less. Neal is going to be a big part in training camp. If he steps up big and challenges for a spot on the line to be a starter then we are going to have real depth. His inside pass rush presence will be needed during the season.
There is nothing wrong with me cheering for players that are former players for my teams. Unless they become a Viking.

I heard a 1st rd pick signed, but not who... Didn't expect he would be the first!
That should make Bulaga a relatively easy sign before training camp.
