Washington Post: When Will The First Round Picks Sign?

LT Bryan Bulaga hasn't yet signed his rookie contract with the Green Bay Packers, and he's tweeted that he won't be signing one this weekend. I'm expecting it will happen on the eve of training camp, or maybe a couple days thereafter, while all the details are worked out. I can't see how missing a couple days of training camp would hurt his development.

There will be some stragglers around the NFL, there are always a few players who sign late, but right now the unsigned first round draft choices are waiting for the No. 1 overall pick, QB Sam Bradford, to sign his rookie contract with the Rams. Me, at the Washington Post.com:

This year, it really depends on Rams quarterback Sam Bradford. Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, taken two picks after Bradford, has said that he's waiting for Bradford to sign first. The money paid to Bradford as a rookie will seem crazy, but it shouldn't be much more than what was guaranteed to last year's number one overall pick, Lions QB Matthew Stafford. And Bradford is represented by someone who should know what he's doing: veteran agent Tom Condon.

Will be

interesting…. rookie contracts were already on the rise and now this is an uncapped year I believe…….Looks like a field day for Agents.

NFL needs an Entry Level Contract system like the NHL does…a guy who hasnt played a down in the league yet shouldnt be guaranteed +$20 Million

Totally agreed. I love how the NHL handles contracts for rookies!

I'm glad the NFL isn't like the NBA...

when some draftees NEVER sign with their teams, ala Rucky Rubio and Victor Claver, and players wind up bouncing around with different teams in or slightly after their rookie season (Chris Douglas-Roberts, Ryan Anderson, Brandon Rush, and Courtney Lee).

The NBA has players bust more spectacularly than the NFL. Ever hear of Joe Alexander? He’s not exactly collecting paychecks from any NBA team right now…

by OBrienSchofieldismyHero on Jul 24, 2010 2:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, the NBA doesn’t handle the draft all that well.

Oh, and I couldn’t believe when Milwaukee took Alexander that early! Stupid!

by packallday555 on Jul 24, 2010 2:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Okay, I'm not going there.

But look at what it did to the Bucks. They NEVER got production out of Alexander, setting up a terrible 2008-2009 season when Redd went down, Bogut wasn’t a massive game-changer, and the team dragged its way to a losing season. After the Bucks dumped Alexander, they made the playoffs because they made a smart selection in Brandon Jennings, and he helped the team gel.

Yeah, Bogut looked better this past season too. It’s too bad he went down later on in the year. I think the Bucks could have made a nice little run in the playoffs.

I like the Sanders pick they made too. He could be something special.

They’re working on one… Both sides agree there needs to be one. Proposal was to take 200M from rookies and give 100 to vets and 100 to retired. Something like that.

by Strohman on Jul 24, 2010 10:06 AM CDT up reply actions

That’s something that would work. Im sure the vets would agree to it since its more money for them instead of giving it to a guy who hasn’t proved himself at all in the league and who is trying to take his job. And the retired players definitely need financial assistance in most cases, NFL wouldnt be what it is today without them so they need to be taken care of

financial assistance

Isn’t just TOTALLY pathetic that your statement “retired players definitely need financial assistance in most cases” is so true? These guys have made millions – more than I’ll probably make in a lifetime – but due to poor choices, enablers, and hangers on – read: posse – they blow it just as quickly. I feel badly for them….but only sorta.

I dont mean those types of player though. Im talking about the guys who were stars back before even 1975…their salaries in most cases dont compete w/ the 4th string players’ salary of today. The guys who need medical assistance is who Im talking about because theyve been out of work because of their physical conditions & unable to collect additional pay from another job after they retired. Al Davis has a program in place in Oakland where he has a fund or something designated to assist any and all ex Raider players who need help. Thats the kind of program that Im talking about and should be implemented league wide.

I feel the same sometimes, but for the most part, they aren’t talking about the modern guys. They are talking a bout the dudes that played for thousands back in the 70s and 60s. Its also about guys playing for the min that get a career ending injury and tons of bills to go with it. Hopefully one day it won’t be necessary to have funds like this…

The Packers should try giving Bulaga a deal like the one Dallas gave Dez Bryant.

In Bulaga’s case, though, I think the Packers would be better off waiting about three to four years before Bulaga renegotiates. That way he earns elite Tackle money when he’s playing at an elite Tackle level.

Not worried

I’m not concerned that Bulaga hasn’t signed yet. Wouldn’t be unreasonable to see him signed by the Hall of Fame Game (at least, I hope).

rookie salaries

Give ’em all $100k a year and really nice insurance in case they get hurt. It should not matter where they were drafted. Of course they should get more when and if they perform well. With all the money being saved, the fans should get major discounts on merchandise and see the games for free.

Yeah, right.

Very curious

Lets say you just graduated with an accounting degree from a major business college. You are the 20th best graduating accountant IN THE WORLD. You can only be an accountant for 3.5 years ( average life of an NFL player). Would you settle for a $100,000 per year salary. Especially when the a guy only 4 years older is making 5 Million doing the same job?

I believe strongly that a Rookie salary cap needs to be instituted. But I don’t believe numbers that are $300,000 below the present NFL minimum salary should be discussed.
Bulaga will get around 12 Million for 5 years with 9 Million guaranteed. That is a little more than Dez Bryant received at draft #24 ( Dallas Dez Bryant – WR 5 year $11.8 million contract, $8.5 million guaranteed) 2.5 Million per year for a stud LT is NFL cheap. The only players that ever will be effected by a rookie salary cap are the top 10-15 players that are paid extraordinary amounts of money.

If you are interested in my Rookie Salary cap proposal READ THIS.

Pretty sure starmark was speaking in jest.

That said, if I could make 100K and be an accountant or be an NFL star, I’d still be the NFL star. You have more potential to make money, get the ladies, have other income opps, celebrity status, and heck you aren’t an accountant!

by TrevorR on Jul 27, 2010 10:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Fresh out of school I made under 30K (about 10 years ago)…I knew people 4-5 years older that were making many multiples of what I was, but it didn’t stop me from pursuing my craft…
