Bigby Finally Signs

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_/id/14003/atari-bigby-finally-accepts-packers-offer

He will be making $1.704 million this season if he makes the team.  It is good that he won't be sitting out training camp, but I still hope Burnett wins the job.  I am not too keen on Bigby starting this year.

Maybe Bigby sees how Burnett did during camp and decided not to lose any more time.

I'm happy

I loved Bigby his 1st year with us, I believe he has what it takes but I don’t think he has been healthy since then. Glad they signed Burnett. Doesn’t seem like he’ll ever perform through the bumps and bruises

So how many contract issues are left?

Obviously Bulaga is the most pressing really. Are there any more pressing contract issues? C-Wood has been rumored to want a new deal. Maybe the Tramon Williams contract as well.

Overall, we are in great shape so far.

by PackApologist on Jul 27, 2010 10:18 PM CDT reply actions

I agree…we are sitting in GREAT shape. For all the crap TT gets, he’s got everyone accounted for right now!

by TrevorR on Jul 27, 2010 11:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Good shape?

I agree that we are looking good coming into this training camp BUT the biggest concern that i have is Al Harris…We saw how good the defense can and can not be without him…We need him back so that Tramon Williams can play the Nickle for us…All of that bullshit about Al going to the #3 even when he is healthy and that Tramon is going to take his spot is rediculous.

by SpaceGhost34 on Jul 28, 2010 1:48 AM CDT reply actions

Even if he comes back, I don’t think he’ll be back at CB2 level. Maybe…but I think Tramon is the #2 regardless. Why would it be RIDiculous? Al is what, 34? His level of play has been slipping the past few years (a little) and now he suffered a VERY serious injury. I think its ridiculous to assume he’s going to come back and just pick up where he was at in 2006 or something.

by TrevorR on Jul 28, 2010 7:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly. Too me, that’s what’s ridiculous. He already had looked like he was losing a step before his injury, so how are we supposed to think he can come back playing at the same level he was before his injury?

I know people like Harris a lot, and I do too but eventually we’re going to have to move on from him, and I think we have a pretty good replacement for him in Williams.

by packallday555 on Jul 28, 2010 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

LOL

I just noticed how you pointed out how i spelled that wrong

by SpaceGhost34 on Jul 28, 2010 3:22 PM CDT up reply actions

haha

sorry man…people spelling it “rediculous” really bugs me. I don’t even know why it bothers me so much but rather than going grammar nazi I thought I would just reuse the work spelled correctly! :-)

by TrevorR on Jul 29, 2010 1:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Really?

Al Harris with a step lost is still better than Tramon Williams

by SpaceGhost34 on Jul 28, 2010 3:14 PM CDT reply actions

Harris

Is not a CB that relies on speed and quickness anyway. Thats why I said awile back that his ACL would afffect him less than other CB’s. Harris relies on his physicality, long arms and strength to jam WR at the LOS, to disrupt their routes and timing w/ the QB. Even w/ that Harris is going to have some difficulty reclaiming his #2 CB role.

by Strohman on Jul 28, 2010 3:56 PM CDT up reply actions

True…but as a bump and run guy, he needs speed to catch up after guys do get by him. Physicality is still important but at some point he’s going to become too slow to make up for the speedy guys that get by him.

by TrevorR on Jul 29, 2010 1:25 PM CDT up reply actions

Actually that happened to him quite a bit last season, and was the reason I think he was getting beat deep more then we had been used to seeing.

by packallday555 on Jul 29, 2010 3:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe…we’ll see here pretty soon. We don’t know how many steps he has lost though. He’s not only another year older (I am JUST younger and I can feel my age starting to catch up to me) but he’s coming back from a major injury. We don’t know what kind of condition he’s going to be in or how well he’s going to play. AS far as I am concerned, he has to earn that #2 job. I am not giving it to him based on name recognition or past history.

by TrevorR on Jul 29, 2010 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

True

Thats what im saying also, he can play man at the line or be physical in a zone…Either way we need the guy this year

by SpaceGhost34 on Jul 28, 2010 4:51 PM CDT reply actions

OK

First you CAN’T be physical in zone coverage!!! Can only do that in the 5 yds beyond the LOS… You can and Harris IS physical at press man coverage!

Second, apparently you didn’t read the last sentence… “Even w/ that Harris is going to have some difficulty reclaiming his #2 CB role.” Harris is going to have trouble playing at the level he was pre-injury… IMO, he is the nickel/#3 CB this season!

by Strohman on Jul 28, 2010 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

um...

So you cant jam at the line in Zone Coverage? thats not true…and my point is Al Harris is going to be more physical at the line and and make more tackles…more physical tackles as well

by SpaceGhost34 on Jul 28, 2010 9:13 PM CDT reply actions

typically you don't

jamming in a zone coverage would be a bad move. You rarely are ON a guy (to start with) and you rarely are on the line. You cover a zone. He probably won’t even be in that 5 yard cushion too often.

by TrevorR on Jul 29, 2010 1:27 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

But if you want to show a different look and then drop into it is what i was saying…Al is mean and thats what i like about the guy..

by SpaceGhost34 on Jul 29, 2010 1:40 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't say that...

Cover 2 uses CB who jam at the LOS then drop into zone… But when your in the zone you can’t be physical. Harris excels at press man coverage, but lacks the quickness and instincts needed to play zone coverage. Harris’ physicality has little to do w/ his tackling… It has everything to do w/ the way he presses the WR at the LOS and in man coverage as much as he can get away w/ it… BTW, Harris isn’t especially physical tackler, not is he a particularly good tackler. He gets the job done in that regard, but thats about it.

by Strohman on Jul 28, 2010 9:33 PM CDT reply actions

...

I cant believe what im hearing…People are really going to jump on the Tramon I cant hardly cover anything above average Williams ban wagon…We are talking about a proven, veteran, Pro Bowl corner who just becuase is getting older is doubted? I mean if you think that an ACL tear is going to hold him back from starting the season then fine, but to asume that Tramon Williams is some how better?? What have yall been watching? He hasnt broke out yet, so lets stop appointing him the next big thing that has yet to happen…Seriously

by SpaceGhost34 on Jul 29, 2010 2:41 AM CDT reply actions

Give it a rest!!!

I don’t think anyone is saying Williams is better than a pre-injury Harris, but face the damn facts… He is 35 and coming off a knee injury that required TWO (2) surgeries to fix!!! It’s impossible to know how well he returns from the injury!!! So fans are mostly on the Williams bandwagon, but that doesn’t mean they automatically think Williams is better than Harris was BEFORE his injury!!!

SERIOUSLY!!!

by Strohman on Jul 29, 2010 7:38 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

Ghost read my post over on the tight end thingy it will explain my feelings here also.

by the yooper on Jul 29, 2010 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions

The doubts on Al Harris....

come because of 2 reasons: His struggles when he did play last year and him coming off an ACL Tear. He was very average last year when he played and did committ a LOT of penalties. Williams wasn’t any better, but he wasn’t any worse either. That’s not saying we expect big things out of him, we just know what to expect out of him.

by Jabooty on Jul 29, 2010 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

sigh

Okay man…enough already.

First Tramon wasn’t even on Roy for most of his yards.

About 40 of the yards had Collins on him (Williams fumbled it at the end). I haven’t seen highlights of the rest but you need to give that a rest dude. I don’t think Williams is great, in fact I was slightly underwhelmed by him last year, but you need to get off him especially if THAT is you main dig.

by TrevorR on Jul 29, 2010 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Why don’t people recognize Williams talent?? Does everyone know that even when Harris went down, Williams had taken about 65% of the snaps on defense? Since Woodson played in the slot, Williams started on the outside and did just fine. And actually, a lot of games Williams covered opposing teams best Wr’s. (Ochocinco and Rice) As for the Dallas game, I don’t think Williams even covered him much. I’m almost positive that Williams one big gain came when Collins was covering him, and he ended up fumbling anyway.

I don’t think anyone thinks Williams is better then Harris was before his injury but now the reality is, he probably has surpassed him.

by packallday555 on Jul 29, 2010 3:32 PM CDT up reply actions

yea

I’ve been looking a little deeper into it, i didnt realize that he had torn so many ligaments and etc…I was confused with Kampman and his ACL…Thats where i was confused…Hopfully the guy can recover not because im such a huge fan but we really need some depth at the position, Williams will have alot to shoulder but he should be alright…I just hope he can stop playing with his hands so much and use his speed to get into better position…

by SpaceGhost34 on Jul 29, 2010 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Did he really have that many penalties?

I really don’t remember him being penalized that much. Maybe I’m wrong, but he seemed to play w/in the rules for the most part. Anyone w/ info about how our DB’s were penalized in relation to others in the league and w/in our group of DB’s…

by Strohman on Jul 29, 2010 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

No i mean like...

How in basketball they say play with your feet not your hands….It looked like he was trying to gain position with his hands more than with his speed…

by SpaceGhost34 on Jul 29, 2010 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

If he wasn’t penalized then it wasn’t a problem…. Just using every aspect of the game he could to his advantage! His feet are an advantage in terms of speed and quickness but why try to limit his hand play if its w/in the rules? Using your hands is something you can only use in the 1st 5 yds anyway, after that its all about the feet… Don’t quite understand why your complaining or what your getting at…

by Strohman on Jul 29, 2010 5:39 PM CDT up reply actions

...

I dont see why you what you dont get…we are saying the same thing…After the first five yards its all about the feet…He uses gets his hands when the ball is in the air and he gets called for it?

by SpaceGhost34 on Jul 29, 2010 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I asked that...

Did he really get penalized that much??? I didn’t think he did…

So the question still stands. “Anyone w/ info about how our DB’s were penalized in relation to others in the league and w/in our group of DB’s.”

Seems your saying he was, but I don’t know and would like verification… Not just your opinion.

by Strohman on Jul 29, 2010 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

If i knew i would tell you, and since you dont seem to know maybe an opinion would be better than nothing…

by SpaceGhost34 on Jul 29, 2010 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I don’t have any exact info on it, but he did have some pass interference penalties right after he took over for Harris. Granted, they pretty much all came against the Ravens, and one or two of them were pretty questionable.

by packallday555 on Jul 29, 2010 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Harris?

Harris was penalized a TON in his career…its one of the things that kept him from being considered one of the best in the league in my book. I don’t know about last year, I am sure we could find stats on it somewhere but I just don’t have time to right now…

by TrevorR on Jul 30, 2010 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think we need Harris to come back decent to provide depth too, no doubt.

I just hope he can stop playing with his hands so much and use his speed to get into better position…

If you really go back and look at it though, Williams always was in pretty good position. I just don’t think he had the confidence in his abilities, and as a result we saw the arm bar come out.

by packallday555 on Jul 29, 2010 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions

...

I just stand behind the guy and i’ve been tryin too keep up with how his rehab is going. If he plays the #2 or #3 we need him this year if our secondary can hope to slow anybody down…Teams will have a hard time running on us again so the Secondary is going to be under attack and we need as much depth as we can get at the position…I’m not sold on Pat Lee due to his injuries and I’m hoping we can see something out of him

by SpaceGhost34 on Jul 29, 2010 1:09 PM CDT reply actions

stats

woodson——-committed 8 penalties, 51% qb completed on him, gave up 5 td’s

harris——-committed 6 penalties, 49% qb completed on him, gave up 2 td’s

williams——committed 5 penalties, 60% qb completed on him, gave up 4 td’s

oh nice find!!! I was just commenting on that and said I don’t have the stats but that I am sure they are out there!
